Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of biomaterials in bone healing of critical bone defects created by piezoelectric surgery in rat calvaria. Method and materials: Histomorphologic analysis was performed to assess bone regeneration and tissue response. Fifty animals were randomized into five groups with one of the following treatments: Control group (n = 10), spontaneous blood clot formation with no bone fill; BO group (Bio-Oss, Geistlich Pharma; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine medullary bone substitute; BF group (Bonefill, Bionnovation; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine cortical bone substitute; hydroxyapatite group (n = 10), defects were filled with hydroxyapatite; calcium sulfate group (n = 10), defects were filled with calcium sulfate. Five animals from each group were euthanized at 30 and 45 days. The histomorphometry calculated the percentage of the new bone formation in the bone defect. Results: All data obtained were evaluated statistically considering P < .05 as statistically significant. The results demonstrated the potential of all biomaterials for enhancing bone regeneration. The findings showed no statistical differences between all the biomaterials at 30 and 45 days including the control group without bone grafting. Conclusion: In conclusion, the tested biomaterials presented an estimated capacity of osteoconduction, statistically nonsignificant between them. In addition, the selection of biomaterial should consider the specific clinical aspect, resorption rates, size of the particle, and desired bone healing responses. It is important to emphasize that in some cases, using no bone filler might provide comparable results with reduced cost and possible complications questioning the very frequent use of ridge presentation procedures. Objectives: The prevalence and the economic burden of periodontal disease are high. To save or replace diseased teeth, an objective prognosis assessment using the long-term predictability of the various treatment options should be performed. As dental implants have become a treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth, the number of implant failures and complications has also increased. The objective of this review was to compare the cost-effectiveness of saving and maintaining the teeth vs replacing them with dental implants in patients with severe periodontal disease (with hopeless or questionable teeth). Method and materials: A database search was conducted using Medline (OVID), Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL electronic sources until July 2023. Two reviewers reviewed the papers in accordance with the specific selection criteria after choosing the abstracts that met the initial selection criterion for full article retrieval. Results: Twelve articles were included, of which nine articles discussed the cost-effectiveness of preserving teeth in severe periodontal disease and three articles discussed the effectiveness of implants that replaced the periodontally compromised teeth. It was found that placing and maintaining implants was more costly than properly treating and maintaining periodontally compromised teeth. Supportive periodontal treatment contributed the most to the cost during the periodontal treatment. Conclusions: Implants are an effective choice to replace missing teeth; however, these are not permanent, present complications, and require strict maintenance. Thus, when deciding whether to maintain a periodontally compromised tooth or to replace it with a dental implant, in terms of cost-effectiveness, implant maintenance cost as well as the cost associated with treating implant complications should be considered. Abstract: Scientific research on the mechanisms to address global warming and its consequences continues to proliferate in the context of an accelerating climate emergency. The concept of climate action includes multiple meanings, and several types of actors employ its use to manage the crisis. The term has evolved to incorporate many of the suggested strategies to combat global warming offered by international bodies, states, nongovernmental organizations, the private sector, and social movements. The present work offers a classification scheme to build a shared understanding of climate action through a lens of environmental justice and just transitions developed by sociologists and others. The classification system includes major institutional and noninstitutional forms of climate action. By identifying the primary forms of climate action, analysts, scholars, policymakers, and activists can better determine levels of success and how different forms of climate action may or may not complement one another in the search for equitable solutions in turning back the rapid heating of the planet.

Interceptive orthodontics may be indicated in puppies exhibiting dental malocclusion with linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth to alleviate pain and prevent teeth interlock, which may affect growth and development of the mandibles. Historically extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth has been recommended as soon as a malocclusion is identified, often as early as 6-8 weeks of age and no later than 12 weeks of age. This early surgical intervention of deciduous teeth extractions risks potential damage to the developing permanent canine teeth resulting in enamel defects often referred to as a Turner's tooth or Turner's hypoplasia. A search of medical records from five veterinary specialty dentistry practices was conducted to identify dogs 8-12 weeks of age who (a) underwent deciduous mandibular canine extractions for management of class 1 or class 2 malocclusion with linguoverted mandibular canine teeth, and (b) were seen for at least one recheck exam to assess for enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth. Furthermore, data was collected to determine the number of dogs that required additional treatment after eruption of the permanent canine teeth due to linguoversion of the permanent canine teeth. All procedures were performed by a board-certified veterinary dentist™ or a supervised veterinary dentistry resident. Seventy-four dogs fit the inclusion criteria and had a total of 143 deciduous mandibular canine teeth extracted, out of which 13 dogs exhibited enamel defects affecting 21 permanent canine teeth. The 13 affected dogs represent a 17.5% cumulative incident rate 13/74 (95%CI 11-28%). Of all extracted teeth, 14.6% (21/143) had enamel defects affecting permanent canine teeth. Twenty-eight dogs required additional treatment to prevent the permanent mandibular canine teeth from causing trauma to the hard palate and gingiva which represented 37.8% (28/74) of all dogs in the study. Age and sex of the dog at the time of extraction were not found to be associated with the likelihood of incidence of enamel defects. This is the first reported rate of enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth following extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth and is important to consider when advising or performing extraction of deciduous teeth in dogs.

ABSTRACT Pinto beans, an underutilized legume, are abundant in protein content and contain a variety of beneficial phytonutrients. However, the commonly used protein extraction method, alkaline extraction, is associated with several drawbacks. These drawbacks include low extraction yield and purity as well as the production of large amounts of wastewater that can lead to environmental hazards. In this regard, membrane technology has gained considerable recognition as a superior method for extracting proteins. A combined processing scheme was developed, which included alkaline extraction at pH 10.5, ultrafiltration with a concentration factor of 5.5, diafiltration with a diavolume of 4, and isoelectric precipitation at pH 4.5 followed by freeze drying. The specific functional characteristics (nitrogen solubility index, water and oil holding capacity, and emulsifying and foaming properties) of the protein concentrates were assessed and compared with those of a commercially available soybean protein isolate. Based on pinto bean flour containing 23.9% protein, 85.5% of the protein was recovered in the products of this process: precipitated protein concentrate (PPC) with 86.4% protein, acid‐soluble protein concentrate (ASP‐C) with 56.3% protein, and meal residue with 6.1% protein. The mass yields were 17.3% in PPC, 3.9% in ASP‐C, and 54% in the meal residue. The precipitated protein showed higher emulsifying activity, and the acid‐soluble protein showed a high nitrogen solubility index (NSI) and oil‐holding capacity. Both proteins had comparable foaming properties to commercial soy protein isolate. The project demonstrated the feasibility of protein production from pinto beans and highlighted the proteins' useful food functionality and good potential for commercialization. The increasing demand for platinum group metals (PGMs) across various industries indicates the importance of recovering these noble metals from secondary resources. Typically, after pretreatment, PGMs are dissolved using hydrochloric acid solutions containing strong oxidant by virtue of the chemical stability of their anionic chloro-complexes. Several separation techniques, including cementation, precipitation, ion exchange, and solvent extraction, are employed to separate PGMs from leaching solutions. Each method has distinct advantages and limitations concerning efficiency and product purity. Cementation proves effective for concentrating PGMs in solutions containing base metal ions. However, ion exchange and solvent extraction are more commonly used for the separation of PGMs present in hydrochloric acid leaching solutions. Especially, solvent extraction processes employing commercial extractants, ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents have been extensively investigated. While deep eutectic solvents show promising as ‘green’ extractants, further research is required to overcome their limitations for industrial applications. A combined process integrating leaching, solvent extraction, and precipitation could offer an efficient solution for recovering high-purity PGMs from the solution containing diverse metal ions. AbstractGreen coffee beans, rejected for commercial use because of glyphosate contamination, were examined to monitor their glyphosate levels from harvest, through roasting, until various coffee extractions. The green beans, Arabica and Robusta, exhibited glyphosate levels above the EU-MRL (0.14–0.21 mg/kg), representing a worst-case scenario. The beans were roasted to different degrees and subsequently used for different coffee preparations. As a result of roasting (>200 °C), glyphosate contents were reduced, frequently by more than 73%. Remarkably, up to 9% of initial glyphosate was removed together with the silverskin, already at lower temperatures. Filtered and instant coffee beverages prepared from respective coffee samples resulted in virtually quantitative glyphosate transfer. Glyphosate transfer was significantly less for espresso, and ristretto, apparently due to the reduced amounts of water used for extraction. Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) was not detectable on any process level, confirming that AMPA is not a thermal glyphosate degradation product. In conclusion, compelling evidence is provided that glyphosate contamination becomes considerably reduced during roasting, whereas beverage preparation contributes at best to a minor further reduction. In consequence, even unusually high initial glyphosate loads in green beans are strongly reduced by the roasting process, resulting in a final cup content of <0.4 µg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans have utilized plants for various purposes, including sustenance and medical treatment for millennia. Researchers have extensively investigated medicinal plants' potential in drug development, spurred by their rich array of chemical compounds. Curcumin, a valuable bioactive compound, is extracted from Turmeric, known by the scientific name Curcuma Longa L. Notably, curcumin boasts potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a promising candidate for treating cancer and other microbial diseases. Therefore, the simulation study of the extraction of this important medicinal compound by water, which is a green solvent, was carried out. This study employed molecular dynamics simulation for the first time to explore the extraction of Curcuma Longa L. extract using subcritical water. The simulations were carried out at constant pressure and different temperatures, using the Compass force field in the Lammps simulation package. The findings revealed an increase in the amount of Curcuma longa extract with rising temperature, indicating a weakening of hydrogen bonds in water molecules. Water lost its polar state with increasing temperature and became a suitable non-polar solvent for extracting non-polar compounds. Introduction: Itraconazole is a widely used broad-spectrum antifungal drug on a global scale. However, its poor water solubility necessitates the development of advanced formulations for its effective use. Currently, itraconazole is available commercially in capsule form, with pellets containing the active drug. The extraction of itraconazole from these granules is often required when developing new formulations. Extracting active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from pellets is crucial in ensuring precise and consistent dosing when producing pharmaceutical dosage forms. Surprisingly, no existing methods for extracting itraconazole from pellets have been reported thus far. Objective: Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate an efficient method for extracting this API from pellets. Methods: Two extraction methods were assessed: conventional Soxhlet extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction. Results and Discussion: The results demonstrated that ultrasound-assisted extraction significantly outperformed the conventional method, yielding higher amounts of itraconazole with a high purity level of 96.8%. This review underscores the novelty of silk sericin, often regarded as a byproduct in silk production. Comprising approximately 30% of silk, sericin possesses valuable properties that have been largely overlooked in favor of silk fibroin. This work focuses on innovative extraction methods to convert sericin, typically considered waste, into a valuable resource. By examining these extraction techniques alongside diverse applications, the review aims to enhance the recognition and utilization of silk sericin in research and industry. Various extraction processes where the traditional methods, and some new techniques, are all discussed. In detail, the advantages, limitations, and strategy optimization associated with each extraction method are highlighted. For instance, silk sericin has shown promise as a wound treatment agent, a scaffold for tissue engineering, a carrier for drug delivery, and a biomaterial for regenerative medicine in the field of biomedical science due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. Additionally, it also finds application in the cosmetic industry, where it is used in skincare products due to its moisturizing, antioxidant, and antiaging properties. Eventually, the challenges, limitations, and prospects of silk sericin are intensively discussed. This comprehensive review is expected to serve the growing body of knowledge surrounding silk sericin and foster further research and development of silk sericin‐related fields. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the role of phytosterols in public health, it is crucial to establish simple, rapid, eco-conscious, efficient, and highly sensitive techniques for their extraction and determination across various matrices. This review presents a thorough overview of various techniques used for extracting and analyzing phytosterols in diverse plant-derived foods, encompassing a range of advanced technologies like solid-phase extraction, microextraction, supercritical fluid extraction, QuEChERS, alongside traditional approaches. The detection techniques include liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, supercritical fluid chromatography, and other methodologies. ABSTRACTCitrus peels are rich in bioactive phenolic compounds with various health effects including antioxidant, antiobesity, antiinflammatory, antihypertensive, antihypercholesterolemic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticarcinogenic activities. Both extractable and nonextractable phenolics are present in significant amounts in Citrus peel with diverse bioactivities. While extractable phenolics can be recovered from the fruit peels by conventional extraction methods, nonextractable phenolics remaining in the residues must be released from the cell matrix first by hydrolysis with acid, alkali, or enzymes. Novel processing technologies can help in improvement of extraction efficiency. Extreme process or medium conditions degrade phenolics and their bioactivity where encapsulation can be applied to improve their stability, solubility, and bioactivity. Citrus peel powder including ascorbic acid and dietary fiber besides phenolics or extracts therefrom can be used as functional food ingredients to extend shelf life and provide health benefits. In addition, phenolic extracts can be used as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents in active food packaging applications. Phenolic extracts have also a potential to be used as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. In this study, the upstream and downstream production processes of curdlan from Priestia megaterium were optimized to enhance its yield. Additionally, a novel extraction method was developed for curdlan recovery. Optimization studies were conducted using Central composite design (CCD). Curdlan yield improved from 0.15 g/L (unoptimized) to 0.46 g/L (3-fold increase) when fermentation was carried out in CCD-optimized media of (w/v) sucrose 20%, urea 0.1%, KH2PO4 0.02%, agitation speed 250 rpm. To further enhance curdlan yield during extraction, ultrasonication was incorporated as a novel step into the conventional method of acid/alkali-assisted curdlan recovery. A two-step optimization was chosen for extraction, namely, one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and CCD, wherein the optimized extraction parameters were determined to be 25 s sonication, 1 N NaOH, and 2 h solubilization time. The curdlan yield improved by 1.5-fold (0.70 g/L) post optimization, in comparison with unoptimized conventional extraction step. Finally, the biopolymer was validated through characterization by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which showed characteristic curdlan spectra in the13C and1H NMR studies. Cinnamon, an Indigenous species, is extensively used as a folk medicine in India, China, and other parts of the world due to its therapeutic potential inherited via the latent chemical composition. The vital component presented is cinnamaldehyde, along with cinnamic acid and cinnamate, which contributes to being an anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer agent together with the capability to control neurological syndromes like Alzheimer's and even Parkinson's diseases. Given the importance of the anticarcinogenic properties of cinnamon on various cell strains concerning the curable effect, this review focuses on evaluating different extraction methods like steam distillation, Soxhlet extraction, microwave‐assisted extraction, and more, in addition to a summary of new technologies like gas chromatography, HPLC, DART‐MS, and NMR, etc. which paved the way in characterizing the chemical composition of cinnamon. Cinnamaldehyde showed its apoptosis through various mechanistic pathways on an adequate number of cell lines and antineoplastic potential on specific multifaceted cancerous cells, which advocates for continued research and investment in this vital area of drug discovery and suggestions for future scope. The study evaluated the combined effects of drying methods (air drying [AD], hot AD [HAD], microwave drying [MD], and freeze‐drying [FD]) and ultrasonication parameters (sonication temperature [STemp]: 40, 50, and 60°C) and heating time (STime: 60 and 120 min) on natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) extraction of phytochemicals from Amaranthus hybridus stem. Increasing the STemp increased the extraction yield (ECY) of the phytochemicals for all drying methods but increase in the heating time reduced the ECY slightly. MD combined with 60°C ST showed the highest ECY (53%), whereas HAD combined with 40°C ST had the lowest ECY (18%). At 60 min heating time, increasing the ST from 40 to 50°C increased the total phenolic content (TPC) in the extract for most drying methods except MD, and a sonication time of 120 min showed a slightly higher TPC, especially for MD samples. At 60 min sonication, total flavonoid content (TFC, 800 mgQE/g) was highest for AD plus 50°C ST and lowest for AD combined with 60°C (100 mgQE/g), whereas for 120 min sonication, MD and AD with 50°C showed the highest TFC (690 mgQE/g). FD retained better some of the vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin) but MD retained better vitamin C. The antioxidant capacity was not so much different among the drying methods except for FD, which showed lower values. These results provide a theoretical basis for the synergistic applications of drying and ultrasonication during NADES extraction of phytochemicals from Amaranthus hybridus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various treatment modalities, such as anterior teeth intrusion and posterior teeth extrusion, are employed to correct deep bite. However, selecting the optimal approach requires careful consideration of patient-specific factors and treatment objectives. While anterior teeth intrusion is effective for mild to moderate cases, posterior teeth extrusion may be preferred in severe deep bite scenarios. There are various treatment modalities for deep bite correction such as intrusion arches and mini screw implants. Jayade's intrusion arch, detailed by A.V. Jayade in "Refined Begg for Modern Times" (2001), is an orthodontic appliance designed to correct vertical dental misalignments by intruding over-erupted anterior teeth. The modified three-piece intrusion arch is an advancement of the traditional intrusion arch technique. It incorporates three distinct segments: two lateral segments and a central segment. This design allows for greater precision and control over the intrusion forces applied to specific teeth or groups of teeth. The bioactive flavonoids pinostrobin (PN) and panduratin A (PA) from Boesenbergia rotunda are essential for research and therapeutic applications. This study introduces an innovative method utilizing ultrasound-assisted extraction with n-hexane pre-treatment, followed by one-step centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) purification. Extraction efficiency was evaluated using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), and the isolated compounds were characterized through 1H-NMR and liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS), adhering to AOAC validation guidelines. Optimal extraction conditions comprised a particle size of 125 μm, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/mL, and a 10 min extraction time, yielding a crude extract of 6.96 ± 0.07%. Using an n-hexane/MeOH/water (5/3.4/1.6, v/v) solvent system in ascending mode, PN (2.16 mg, 98.78% purity) and PA (0.4 mg, 99.69% purity) were isolated from 67 mg of crude extract within 30 min. The coupling of Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) technology with gas chromatography (GC) has a well-established and successful history. Traditionally, SPME fibers have been the most popular form thanks to their versatility and the ease with which they can be fully automated. However, alternative geometries for SPME have been developed over the years, beginning with Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) and later evolving into Thin-Film SPME (TF-SPME) devices. Each of these formats offers distinct advantages and disadvantages, which are explored in this study. The primary objective of this study was to comprehensively compare available forms of SPME devices, with a special focus on the advantages of TF-SPME, a novel microextraction method particularly suited for the analysis of odorants in food. The study involved analyzing a standard mixture of 11 key food odorants, representing a range of polarities, to evaluate the efficiency of TF-SPME devices in terms of the number of analytes extracted. Furthermore, four types of TF-SPME devices were compared against each other in both standard mixtures and actual food samples. The final stage of the study employed GCxGC-ToFMS analysis to showcase the potential of the most efficient HLB-TF-SPME device in the non-targeted analysis of complex samples, exemplified by unfiltered wheat beer. Background: First permanent molars (FPM) are highly susceptible to decay before the age of 15. When they are severely affected, the decision between conservation and extraction arises, particularly considering the potential for the second permanent molar (SPM) to replace the FPM. This cohort study aimed to evaluate clinical practices regarding FPM pulp necrosis treatment in children aged eight to twelve in two hospital departments in the Paris region. A second objective was to evaluate the one-year outcomes of the two therapies. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using computerized billing software to identify patients aged eight to twelve who underwent either extraction or root canal treatment (RCT). Data collected included sex, age, arch involved, number of decayed surfaces, presence of Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), presence of infection, and treatment type. Results: A total of 66 patients were included, representing 61 extracted teeth and 23 RCT. Three main decision criteria were identified: presence of MIH (p < 0.005), extent of decay (p < 0.05), and SPM Nolla's stage. A total of 48% of the patients were seen at one year. A total of 16 of the 32 extractions and five of the nine RCTs had favorable evolution (p = 1). Conclusions: The question of whether to perform RCT or extraction of necrotic FPM in children aged eight to twelve is difficult to assess. It appears that five criteria need to be considered before the decision: possibility of long-term sealed coronal reconstruction, SPM Nolla's stage, follow-up possibilities, arch concerned, and presence of third permanent molar. Offshore wind has rapidly developed over the past three decades, with over 6000 fixed-bottom substructures installed in Europe alone as of 2022. Despite this progress, there has been limited focus on the end-of-life stages, particularly decommissioning, which is currently the default option. Sustainable offshore wind development hinges on effective decommissioning strategies for fixed-steel pile foundations. This review critically examines state-of-the-art pile-foundation-decommissioning methods recently tested in industry and academia, including partial-removal techniques like internal cutting and external cutting and full-removal approaches such as excavation and novel extraction methods. Key factors influencing decommissioning decisions, such as seabed disturbance, environmental impact, reuse potential, and cost, are discussed. Analyses reveal that current partial-removal strategies could render vast swaths of marine areas inaccessible for future development. In contrast, full removal through extraction may enable complete recycling and minimise post-decommissioning monitoring. However, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding novel extraction methods' scalability, technical feasibility, and economics. Extensive research encompassing engineering, environmental, and economic dimensions is essential to develop holistic pile-foundation-decommissioning solutions that facilitate the sustainable long-term growth of offshore wind. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent pollutants previously used in agriculture, known for their ability to bioaccumulate and pose health risks. This study analyzed samples of roe, viscera, and muscle from Astyanax altiparanae fish collected from the Alagados reservoir in Paraná, Brazil. Samples were prepared through extraction and purification, then analyzed using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC/ECD), chosen for its sensitivity in detecting OCPs. The method was validated for precision, accuracy, and detection limits. Detected OCPs included Aldrin (17.1 to 50.6 ng/g in roe), α-endosulfan (3.4 to 23.5 ng/g), p, p'-DDE (4.2 to 134.7 ng/g), Dieldrin (84.7 to 183.1 ng/g), β-endosulfan (6.0 to 51.6 ng/g), and p, p'-DDT (56.6 to 286.8 ng/g). In viscera, concentrations ranged from Aldrin (19.8 to 93.3 ng/g) to p, p'-DDT (52.3 to 89.2 ng/g). Muscle samples showed similar trends. Principal component analysis indicated a link between higher OCP concentrations and increased abdominal width of the fish. A procedure is developed for determining acetone acylhydrazones based on the formation of a colored complex with copper(II) ions of the composition Cu : reagent = 1 : 2 in ammonia solutions, its subsequent extraction with chloroform, and measurements of the absorbance of the extracts at 553 nm (ε = 128 L/(mol cm)); the analytical range is 80.0–590.0 mg/L; the relative error is <2.80%. Using acetone heptanoylhydrazone as an example, it was shown that the reagent in the complex compound is quantitatively extracted in the pH range 7−10 with a single extraction for 3 min; for its complete extraction, a twofold excess of copper(II) is sufficient. The spectra of the homologue complexes of the studied series of acetone acylhydrazones are similar. The high hydrolytic stability of the reagents in a narrow pH range of 9‒10 is established by the spectrophotometric method. The procedure is tested on solutions obtained in the study of the adsorption of reagents on chalcopyrite. The precision of the analysis results is verified by the addition method. The selective separation of Am(III) over Eu(III) from high-level radioactive liquid waste using four bis-succinamide ligands (THE-BisSCA, L1; THDM-BisSCA, L2; THDPh-BisSCA, L3; THDi−P-BisSCA, L4) was explored with density functional theory. Ligands with phenyl groups near the nitrogen, particularly L3, showed the highest Eu(III) affinity. The π bonds orbitals of the benzene ring may conjugate with the long pair N-2p orbital, and this special p-π conjugation effect can lead to charge transfer from benzene ring to the donor N atoms on L3 ligand, resulting a lower energy and more stable structure of the complex formed with the L3 ligand compared to other complexes. Vanadium is an extremely valuable industrial metal typically obtained from processing metallurgical slags. This article provides a comprehensive review and critical evaluation of the technologies of vanadium extraction from slags aiming to identify the most prospective technology. The review covers traditional approaches for treating V‐bearing slags, such as salt roasting followed by acid leaching and ammonium precipitation, as well as promising alternative methods in this field, such as bioleaching, ultrasound‐assisted leaching, and vaporization. The current industrial practice remains energy‐intensive and is associated with chemical waste generation, thus leaving room for further improvements. Overall, this work provides valuable insights into the recycling of vanadium from steelmaking slags including extraction efficiencies of industrial and lab‐scale methods, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method setting the stage for future advancements in this field. An efficient acidic natural deep eutectic solvent (choline chloride-acetic acid, Chcl-AA) was screened out and subsequently combined with ultrasound treatment to recover seabuckthorn leaf phenolics (SLP), and the Plackett–Burman and Box-Behnken designs were used to optimize the process parameters. The optimal parameters were water content of NADES 30%, solvent to solid ratio 32 mL/g, extraction time 14 min, extraction temperature 40°C, ultrasonic power 400 W, and ultrasonic duty cycle 75%. The values of total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) under these conditions were 99.65 ± 2.49 milligram gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry weight (mg GAE/g DW) and 52.02 ± 1.21 milligram rutin equivalent per gram of dry weight (mg RE/g DW), respectively. Twenty-five phenolics were initially identified from SLP by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS), among which hydrolyzable tannins, isorhamnetin derivatives, and quercetin derivatives are the main constituents. The SLP extract was further evaluated as to its ability to inhibit metabolic enzymes, i.e., α-glucosidase, α-amylase, pancreatic lipase, cholesterol esterase, xanthine oxidase, and angiotensin-converting enzyme. SLP exhibited significant inhibition of α-glucosidase (IC50 = 3.31 μg/mL), pancreatic lipase (IC50 = 57.62 μg/mL), and angiotensin-converting enzyme (IC50 = 63.13 μg/mL). Additionally, the compounds extracted using Chcl-AA exhibited superior bioactivity when compared to those using conventional green solvents, i.e., ethanol and water. Summary: Plant polyphenols are the secondary metabolites of plants, with a wide variety of types and diverse structures. At present, many phenolic compounds and their derivatives have been isolated and identified from nature. Common plant polyphenolic compounds have a polyhydroxyl structure, most of which are found in the plants seen in daily life, and most of them have poor water solubility. Due to the existence of polyhydroxyl structure, most plant polyphenols have strong biological activities such as antioxidant, anti‐bacterial and anti‐inflammatory, anti‐cancer, regulation of blood glucose and blood lipid, and anti‐obesity, which are of great research value and broad application prospects. In addition, plant polyphenols have been widely used in food and have become a trendy research topic. Therefore, in this paper, the classifications of plant polyphenols, current status of their bioactivity research and their application in food were analysed, providing reference value for the research and utilisation of plant polyphenols. BACKGROUND: To extract anthocyanins with high efficiency, a hypothesis for high‐speed shear homogenization extraction (HSHE) method was established through a combination of solvent and ultrasonic‐assisted extractions. The efficacy of this hypothesis was demonstrated by performing qualitative and quantitative analyses of 16 anthocyanins extracted from five northern vegetables, and five berry fruits using ultra‐high‐performance Q‐Exactive Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry. Single‐factor experiments were conducted by varying ethanol concentration, temperature, pH and extraction cycles to determine the optimal conditions for this method. RESULTS: Optimal extraction conditions (ethanol 70–80%, 40–50 °C, pH 3–4, performed twice) were determined using an HSHE (5 min, 10 000 rpm, 25 °C) assisted shaker (60 min) and ultrasonication (40 kHz, 160 W cm−2, 30 min, 25 °C) procedure. Compared to the traditional non‐HSHE method, the total anthocyanin content obtained through HSHE extraction showed a significant increase, ranging from 1.0 to 3.9 times higher, with purple cabbage exhibiting the most pronounced enhancement in content. More types of anthocyanins were detected in blueberry (9), black bean (7) and raspberry (5), of which malvidin was the major anthocyanin (0.426 g kg−1) in blueberry, having an amount five times than previously obtained. CONCLUSION: The established HSHE method has been proven to be a superior technique for anthocyanin extraction, with higher extraction efficiency and concentrations. Nusantara Bioscience 16: 219-227. The toxicity of chrome ions is prevalent due to their commonly used in the industry. Some plants are useful for treating toxicity, and ginseng is one of the most known medicinal herbs worldwide and possesses numerous health benefits. The present study aims to use ginseng extract and nano ginseng particles to treat toxicity by potassium dichromate PDC in a rat's model. Therefore, the PDC-toxified rats were treated with ginseng extract and ginseng-NPs at different concentrations, and ginseng-NPs were prepared using green biosynthesis. ELISA technique was used for serum estimation of GSH, SOD, MDA, LH, FSH, and testosterone in the animals' groups. Ginseng extract and ginseng nanoparticles could alleviate the toxic effects of PDC, as indicated by lower MDA, higher levels of antioxidants (SOD and catalase), FSH, and LH-Ab compared to the PDC intoxication group. The results display the lower toxicity of MDA and Catalase parameters compared to groups 2 and 5, whereas the other parameters indicate an increase. By buffering the concentrations of the tested biomarkers in a concentration-dependent way, the nanoparticles added to the protective effects of ginseng. Calabash (Crescentia cujete) is a plant that grows in tropical climates and is scattered and easily found in Indonesia. Calabash is also known to contain several secondary metabolite compounds that have the potential as an antioxidant. This research is purposed to identify phytochemical compounds in calabash fruit seed extract, identify compounds based on the result of LC-MS, and know the antioxidant activity of calabash fruit seeds. The samples were extracted using the maceration method, and then phytochemical screening, LC-MS tests, and antioxidant tests were continued using the DPPH method. This research showed that the ethanol extract of calabash seed positive contains saponin, flavonoids, and triterpenoid compounds. Ethyl acetate extract of calabash seed contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The n-hexane extracts positively contain tannins, alkaloids, and steroids. The values of antioxidant activity of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts were IC50 = 29.7883, 7.219, and 848.712 ppm (µg/ml), respectively. Ethyl acetate extract as the best antioxidant activity was then tested with LC-MS, and results obtained from 26 compounds with the composition of the largest % area is convolvidine (11.277%), coumaroylquinic acid (8.290%) and taxchinin G (8,233%). They showed that calabash fruit seed extract has very strong antioxidant activity, with the best activity being the ethyl acetate extract of calabash fruit seed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trichothecenes (deoxynivalenol, 3- and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol) and zearalenone are toxic secondary metabolites produced by Fusarium species. Although managing these mycotoxins simultaneously is crucial, current analytical methods differ because of their distinct properties. In this study, food matrix extraction conditions were established and applied to cereal-based foods (n = 90). The optimal conditions were developed by utilizing fragment ions and precursors, following the guidelines established by the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists (AOAC). The developed method demonstrated high accuracy and reliability within 20 min, even for samples with low concentrations. Consequently, the recovery range of the fat-oil-processed products and cereal sirup improved from 27.0% to 98.3% and 27.6% to 97.8%, respectively. This improved extraction method offers a more convenient and rapid approach for the analysis of various matrices. Furthermore, these optimized methods can be extended to monitor the co-occurrence of mycotoxins in cereal-based foods, providing valuable assistance to the food industry and regulatory agencies for detecting and monitoring mycotoxins that may pose potential health risks. Resveratrol (RSV), a bioactive natural phenolic compound found in plants, fruits, and vegetables, has garnered significant attention in pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries due to its remarkable biological and pharmacological activities. Despite its potential in treating various diseases, its poor pharmacokinetic properties, such as low solubility, stability, bioavailability, and susceptibility to rapid oxidation, limit its biomedical applications. Recent advancements focus on incorporating resveratrol into innovative materials like nanoparticles, polymers, and bio‐ceramics to enhance its properties and bioavailability. In this review, an exhaustive literature search was conducted from PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to explore these advancements, to compares conventional and innovative extraction methods, and to highlights resveratrol's therapeutic potential, including its anti‐inflammatory, anti‐oxidative, anti‐cancerogenic, antidiabetic, neuroprotective, and cardio‐protective properties. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of hybrid materials combining resveratrol with nanoparticles, polymers, and bio‐ceramics for therapeutic applications. Background/Objectives: Sunflower receptacles are the main by-product of the processing of Helianthus annuus L. Methods: In this study, several extraction methods of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) from sunflower receptacles were evaluated, and then, the physicochemical structure and functional properties of these SDFs were examined. Finally, a mouse constipation model was established to explore its therapeutic potential for constipation. Results: The results showed that the SDF yield of citric acid extraction and enzyme extraction was better than that of hot-water extraction. Structural characterization showed that the three SDF functional groups were similar and amorphous, while the surface distribution of the SDF obtained by the citric acid extraction method (ASDF) had more fine pores. Physicochemical analysis showed that ASDF had the best water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity, and expansion force. Animal experiments showed that the first black stool defecation time of the model group changed significantly (p < 0.001), indicating that the model was successful. Compared with the model group, the middle- and high-dose groups reduced the first black stool defecation time (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) and increased the fecal water content (p < 0.05). The high-dose group significantly promoted the intestinal peristalsis of mice (p < 0.05). From hematoxylin–eosin (H&E) staining, it can be seen that the three dose groups of ASDF can improve the damage of mouse colon tissue induced by loperamide hydrochloride to a certain extent. A novel approach for reducing mercury content in fish meat during post‐packaging storage is developed to extend the margin of their safe consumption. It involves employing a single‐component aqueous medium containing cysteine, as the active agent responsible for displacing mercury from fish proteins and its stabilization in the medium without the need for pH adjustments. The mercury removal efficiency depends on the cysteine concentration and its ratio to fish muscle. Using 1.2 wt% cysteine enables a reduction of mercury in canned Albacore tuna by 25–35%, depending on the fish product type and the exposure time of up to 2 weeks. The potential for the successful application of the developed method in active food packaging solutions is studied for the simultaneous or subsequent purification of the extraction solution through adsorption. Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer in the world after cellulose and commonly found in crustaceans. It is also the most abundant natural nitrogen-containing polysaccharide. The challenge in separation of chitin directly from snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) shells is that the solvent used must be versatile in removing calcium carbonate and protein while also being efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. In this study, chitin was extracted from snow crab shells using a DES consisting of TEBAC and lactic acid. DES successfully removed minerals and proteins, with a deproteinization rate of 95.51% and a decalcification rate of 96.41%, while the purity of chitin was 91.15% and the yield was 21.31%. Furthermore, the extracted chitin has large pores on its surface, making it an ideal matrix for biomedical materials. The regularities of extraction of adsorbate from spent bleaching earth (SBE) of sunflower oil by the esteraldehyde fraction (EAF) have been established. The content of the substances adsorbed by SBE was 34.1%, including 19.2% free fatty acids (FFA) and 11.1% moisture. The influence of temperature (50 and 700 C), extraction duration (60 and 120 min), and the mass ratio of EAF to SBE ((2–4):1) on the extraction parameters has been determined. It was found that increasing these process parameters enhances the extraction degree of the adsorbate and FFA from the bleaching earth, reaching 41.9% and 34.4%, respectively, at a temperature of 700 C, extraction duration of 120 min, and a mass excess of EAF to SBC at a ratio of 4:1. Optimal conditions for the removal of FFA from SBE were identified. It was established that strong acidic sites are present on the surface of the bleaching earth, with the acidity of fresh, spent, and EAF-treated bleaching earth being 0.79, 0.77, and 0.74 mmol H+ per gram, respectively. The basicity of fresh bleaching earth was 0.073 mmol OH– per gram, indicating the ability of bleaching earth to catalyze the esterification of FFA with ethanol. This study aims to optimize chitin extraction conditions by reducing water and chemical consumption using a twolevel factorial design approach. Two variables were studied for the demineralization process: the volume of hydrochloric acid (400 to 500 mL) and the demineralization time (1 to 1.5 hours) at room temperature. For deproteinization, the variables examined were NaOH concentration (0.6 to 1 mol/L) and deproteinization time (1 to 1.5 hours) at 70-80 °C. The ash and protein contents were measured to evaluate the efficiency of the demineralization and deproteinization processes, respectively. Minitab 18 software was used for the experimental design. The results showed that the best conditions for extracting high-quality chitin are a demineralization time of 1 hour, an HCl volume of 500 mL, a NaOH concentration of 1 M, and a deproteinization time of 1 hour. These optimal conditions reduce the amount of water, time, and chemicals required for chitin extraction. Compared to previous studies, we significantly reduced the amount of water and chemicals as well as the extraction duration. These results are innovative as they offer a more efficient and sustainable solution for chitin extraction, thus filling a gap in current research by proposing an optimized method. By providing these new data and demonstrating their effectiveness, our research makes a significant contribution to improving chitin extraction techniques, addressing an unmet need in the industrial field. Extraction of tobacco extracts from tobacco leaf scraps can promote the maximum utilization of tobacco waste and offer tobacco industries a formula to improve cigarette qualities and flavors. Tobacco extracts can be used as a reconstituted tobacco coating solution for reconstituted tobacco sheet (RTS)-based paper. Aroma components in the tobacco extracts can determine the fragrance style of the RTS. However, traditional extraction methods usually have many problems. Herein, the ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis was first applied to improve the aroma of tobacco extracts from tobacco leaf scraps. After ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis, the total aroma components content in tobacco extracts was increased by 5.0 times compared with that in aqueous extracts, and the total extraction yield was increased by 51.57%. Moreover, other compositions in tobacco extracts, including total sugar, nicotine, lignin, total phenols, formic acid, and acetic acid were also increased. Objective: The objective of the study is to examine the work-life balance of married female nurses during the COVID period. Methodology: Psychotherapists believe that middle class women professionals are having more work-life imbalances and especially nursing profession is facing numerous challenges especially in this pandemic situation which are the key hurdles in the progress of nursing. As a result, the research was conducted with 200 respondents comprised of married women nurses from Western Districts of Tamil Nadu and both primary and secondary data are used. Questionnaire is the major data collection tool and a statistical model factor analysis has been used to find the significant variables in work life balance of the nurses. Findings: The results of the study revealed that flexible guidelines and procedures can be adopted by hospital management to ensure a smooth work life balance among the nurses. Novelty: Women nurses are striving to serve their best for the sake of the society people at large during COVID pandemic, relatedly their work life related problems have to be addressed and resolved to ensure their healthy life and continued service. Pectic enzymes are an eco-friendly alternative to improve extraction processes for the food industry. The objective of the research was to obtain pectinase from the pulp of soursop (Annona muricata L.) and cherimoya (Annona cherimola L.), as an alternative to reduce agro-industrial waste in Colombia; involving the study of the factors influencing the protein content of the enzymes extracted from different stages and types of fruits, the conditions for enzymatic activity, and the potential application in the food industry, particularly in extraction processes and juice clarification. A factorial design 23, spectrometric and potentiometric techniques evidenced that the protein content depends on factors such as fruit stage (suitable "s" and unsuitable "u" fruits for consumption) and fruit type (soursop and cherimoya). The higher protein content was obtained by the precipitation method in comparison to ion exchange chromatography. Cherimoya fruit presented a higher protein content of 326 ± 26 mg by precipitation, however, the soursop samples evidenced higher enzymatic activity, 2.2 ± 0.1 U/mL. The pectinase obtained was an acidic enzyme of type pectin methylesterase with an enzymatic activity of 27.0 ± 0.9 U/mL, under the optimal conditions of pH 4 and temperature of 40 °C. The application in blackberry juice evidenced a decrease in the absorbance and pH changes. From the current research, the pulp of soursop and cherimoya was proven as a cheap source to obtain pectinase with enzymatic activity for juice clarification, and this process is an alternative to reduce the negative impact on the environment and an economical source for the local producers. Nicotine is a chiral alkaloid; nitrogen-containing organic compound that occurs naturally. (S)-nicotine is extracted from Tobacco plants and used as the key addictive ingredient in many smoking products. Synthetic nicotine has gained the interest of many smoking product manufacturers over the last few decades due to the ease and low cost of manufacturing. Another claimed advantage of synthetic nicotine is the absence of genotoxic impurities that form during the extraction process of nicotine. These impurities are other plant alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and heavy metals. Additionally, the U. S. FDA has implemented new regulations on the quality control of synthetic nicotine. However, only a very few research articles have been published on assessing the complete impurity profile of synthetic nicotine. Therefore, the need to know the composition difference between tobacco-extracted nicotine vs. synthetic nicotine is highly necessary. In this research study, the impurity profile of thirteen different lots of synthetic nicotine was compared with fourteen lots of nicotine extracted from plants using in-house analytical methods. First, the samples were tested for other alkaloids and phenols by reversed-phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Second, the chiral purity was analyzed by normal phase HPLC. Third, lead and arsenic content were tested by atomic absorption and fluorescence spectrometry. Fourth, nicotine-specific nitrosamines were tested by LC-MS. The reversed phase HPLC data suggested similar quantities of total impurities in both synthetic and tobacco-extracted nicotine (0.1%). However, synthetic nicotine lacks some impurities such as cotinine, nornicotine, and nicotine-N-oxide. Vegetable oils are extracted from oilseeds, fruits and other parts of plants. The method used in oil extraction is of great importance, as it affects both the quality of the final product and the environment. It is desirable that the extraction method be minimally costly, fast, environmentally friendly, and produce oil of high quality and quantity. Common oil extraction methods are mechanical pressing and solvent extraction, and these methods have advantages and disadvantages over each other. Mechanical extraction and solvent extraction are controversial due to poor product quality and high environmental impacts. This review presents applications where conventional oil extraction processes are assisted by microwave or ultrasound. It is necessary to evaluate the impact of ultrasound and microwave-assisted extraction on the quality of the extracted oil and also to compare the results with those of conventional extraction methods. For this purpose, this review discusses the effects of microwave and ultrasound-assisted extraction on the physicochemical, oxidation indices, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant properties of oil extracted from oil seeds and fruits. Furthermore, this review provides readers with in-depth information on the mechanisms involved, their use, and the impact of operating conditions. The yield and quality of the oil obtained by these processes can vary depending on parameters such as microwave power, ultrasound power, processing time, and temperature. In the present study, the experimental intensification and modeling of the extraction process of antioxidants from rice husks using different organic solvents (ethanol, methanol, and acetone, and their mixtures with water) were analyzed and discussed. The best experimental extraction conditions to recover polyphenols from rice husks were identified, and the extraction kinetic data were modeled using the mechanistic and pseudo–second‐order models. The experimental results showed that the solvent‐based extraction of polyphenols from rice husks was endothermic where the ethanol and methanol offered the best separation performance. The polyphenol extraction process using ethanol and acetone was mainly influenced by the percentage of water contained in the solvent mixture used as separation medium, whereas the extraction temperature significantly affected the polyphenol extraction with methanol. The rice husk‐based extracts obtained with methanol and ethanol showed the highest total content of polyphenols (66.72 and 60.68 of gallic acid equivalent/g of biomass) and antioxidant capacity (71.93% and 72.02% 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl [DPPH] inhibition). The mechanistic model offered the best performance to describe the experimental polyphenol extraction, and its results were used to discuss and analyze the mass transfer parameters associated with the intraparticle diffusion of this extraction process. These results contribute to the valorization of rice husk residues as a potential feedstock to be incorporated in the biorefinery context for obtaining value‐added products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
