Neural wearables can enable life-saving drowsiness and health monitoring for pilots and drivers. While existing in-cabin sensors may provide alerts, wearables can enable monitoring across more environments. Current neural wearables are promising but most require wet-electrodes and bulky electronics. This work showcases in-ear, dry-electrode earpieces used to monitor drowsiness with compact hardware. The employed system integrates additive-manufacturing for dry, user-generic earpieces, existing wireless electronics, and offline classification algorithms. Thirty-five hours of electrophysiological data were recorded across nine subjects performing drowsiness-inducing tasks. Three classifier models were trained with user-specific, leave-one-trial-out, and leave-one-user-out splits. The support-vector-machine classifier achieved an accuracy of 93.2% while evaluating users it has seen before and 93.3% when evaluating a never-before-seen user. These results demonstrate wireless, dry, user-generic earpieces used to classify drowsiness with comparable accuracies to existing state-of-the-art, wet electrode in-ear and scalp systems. Further, this work illustrates the feasibility of population-trained classification in future electrophysiological applications.

Children who receive cochlear implants develop spoken language on a protracted timescale. The home environment facilitates speech-language development, yet it is relatively unknown how the environment differs between children with cochlear implants and typical hearing. We matched eighteen preschoolers with implants (31-65 months) to two groups of children with typical hearing: by chronological age and hearing age. Each child completed a long-form, naturalistic audio recording of their home environment (appx. 16 hours/child; >730 hours of observation) to measure adult speech input, child vocal productivity, and caregiver-child interaction. Results showed that children with cochlear implants and typical hearing were exposed to and engaged in similar amounts of spoken language with caregivers. However, the home environment did not reflect developmental stages as closely for children with implants, or predict their speech outcomes as strongly. Home-based speech-language interventions should focus on the unique input-outcome relationships for this group of children with hearing loss.

BackgroundMénière's disease (MD) is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodic bouts of severe dizziness, roaring tinnitus, and fluctuating hearing loss. To date, no targeted therapy exists. As such, we have undertaken a large whole genome sequencing study on carefully phenotyped unilateral MD patients with the goal of gene/pathway discovery and a move towards targeted intervention. This study was a retrospective review of patients with a history of Ménière's disease. Genomic DNA, acquired from saliva samples, was purified and subjected to whole genome sequencing.ResultsStringent variant calling, performed on 511 samples passing quality checks, followed by gene-based filtering by recurrence and proximity in molecular interaction networks, led to 481 high priority MD genes. These high priority genes, including MPHOSPH8, MYO18A, TRIOBP, OTOGL, TNC, and MYO6, were previously implicated in hearing loss, balance, and cochlear function, and were significantly enriched in common variant studies of hearing loss. Validation in an independent MD cohort confirmed 82 recurrent genes. Pathway analysis pointed to cell-cell adhesion, extracellular matrix, and cellular energy maintenance as key mediators of MD. Furthermore, the MD-prioritized genes were highly expressed in human inner ear hair cells and dark/vestibular cells, and were differentially expressed in a mouse model of hearing loss.ConclusionBy enabling the development of model systems that may lead to targeted therapies and MD screening panels, the genes and variants identified in this study will inform diagnosis and treatment of MD.

Attention plays an important role in not only the awareness and perception of tinnitus but also its interactions with external sounds. Recent evidence suggests that attention is heightened in the tinnitus brain, likely as a result of relatively local cortical changes specific to deafferentation sites or global changes that help maintain normal cognitive capabilities in individuals with hearing loss. However, most electrophysiological studies have used passive listening paradigms to probe the tinnitus brain and produced mixed results in terms of finding a distinctive biomarker for tinnitus. Here, we designed a selective attention task, in which human adults attended to one of two interleaved tonal (500 Hz and 5 kHz) sequences. In total, 16 tinnitus (5 females) and 13 age- and hearing-matched control (8 females) subjects participated in the study, with the tinnitus subjects matching the tinnitus pitch to 5.4 kHz (range = 1.9-10.8 kHz). Cortical responses were recorded in both passive and attentive listening conditions, producing no differences in P1, N1, and P2 between the tinnitus and control subjects under any conditions. However, a different pattern of results emerged when the difference was examined between the attended and unattended responses. This attention-modulated cortical response was significantly greater in the tinnitus than control subjects: 3.9-times greater for N1 at 5 kHz (95% CI: 2.9 to 5.0, p = 0.007, ηp2 = 0.24) and 3.0 for P2 at 500 Hz (95% CI: 1.9 to 4.5, p = 0.026, ηp2 = 0.17). We interpreted the greater N1 modulation as local neural changes specific to the tinnitus frequency and the greater P2 as global changes to hearing loss. These two cortical measures were used to differentiate between the tinnitus and control subjects, producing 83.3% sensitivity and 76.9% specificity (AUC = 0.81, p = 0.006). These results suggest that the tinnitus brain is more plastic than that of the matched non-tinnitus controls and that the attention-modulated cortical response can be developed as a clinically meaningful biomarker for tinnitus.

Our sense of hearing is mediated by cochlear hair cells, of which there are two types organized in one row of inner hair cells and three rows of outer hair cells. Each cochlea contains 5-15 thousand terminally differentiated hair cells, and their survival is essential for hearing as they do not regenerate after insult. It is often desirable in hearing research to quantify the number of hair cells within cochlear samples, in both pathological conditions, and in response to treatment. Machine learning can be used to automate the quantification process but requires a vast and diverse dataset for effective training. In this study, we present a large collection of annotated cochlear hair-cell datasets, labeled with commonly used hair-cell markers and imaged using various fluorescence microscopy techniques. The collection includes samples from mouse, rat, guinea pig, pig, primate, and human cochlear tissue, from normal conditions and following in-vivo and in-vitro ototoxic drug application. The dataset includes over 107,000 hair cells which have been identified and annotated as either inner or outer hair cells. This dataset is the result of a collaborative effort from multiple laboratories and has been carefully curated to represent a variety of imaging techniques. With suggested usage parameters and a well-described annotation procedure, this collection can facilitate the development of generalizable cochlear hair-cell detection models or serve as a starting point for fine-tuning models for other analysis tasks. By providing this dataset, we aim to give other hearing research groups the opportunity to develop their own tools with which to analyze cochlear imaging data more fully, accurately, and with greater ease.

The inner ear is the hub where hair cells (HCs) transduce sound, gravity, and head acceleration stimuli to the brain. Hearing and balance rely on mechanosensation, the fastest sensory signals transmitted to the brain. The mechanoelectrical transducer (MET) channel is the entryway for the sound-balance-brain interface, but the channel-complex composition is not entirely known. Here, we report that the mouse utilizes Piezo1 (Pz1) and Piezo2 (Pz2) isoforms as MET-complex components. The Pz channels, expressed in HC stereocilia, and cell lines are co-localized and co-assembled with MET complex partners. Mice expressing non-functional Pz1 and Pz2 at the ROSA26 locus have impaired auditory and vestibular traits that can only be explained if the Pzs are integral to the MET complex. We suggest that Pz subunits constitute part of the MET complex and that interactions with other MET complex components yield functional MET units to generate HC MET currents.

Tinnitus is a heritable, highly prevalent auditory disorder treated by multiple medical specialties. Previous GWAS indicated high genetic correlations between tinnitus and hearing loss, with little indication of differentiating signals. We present a GWAS meta-analysis, triple previous sample sizes, and expand to non-European ancestries. GWAS in 596,905 Million Veteran Program subjects identified 39 tinnitus loci, and identified genes related to neuronal synapses and cochlear structural support. Applying state-of-the-art analytic tools, we confirm a large number of shared variants, but also a distinct genetic architecture of tinnitus, with higher polygenicity and large proportion of variants not shared with hearing difficulty. Tissue-expression analysis for tinnitus infers broad enrichment across most brain tissues, in contrast to hearing difficulty. Finally, tinnitus is not only correlated with hearing loss, but also with a spectrum of psychiatric disorders, providing potential new avenues for treatment. This study establishes tinnitus as a distinct disorder separate from hearing difficulties.

The present study describes a technique for the virtual design of a three-piece stackable auricular mold for unilateral auricular defect rehabilitation using an open-source software program. An optical intraoral scanner is used to scan the patient's ears on both the affected and unaffected side. To maintain the relationship between the mold parts, a stackable attachment is designed and joined to the mold. The mold is 3D printed in resin. This technique provides the patient with a precise auricular prosthesis with perfect thickness, adaptation, and appearance. The workflow introduced in this technique could be considered as an alternative for the fabrication of auricular prostheses and decreased both the clinical and laboratory time compared to the conventional workflow. Background: As a facial feature, the auricle plays an important role in the integrity and aesthetics of the whole face. Auricular subunits are associated with patient satisfaction in auricular reconstruction, but there are few studies on auricular subunits. We want to evaluate the reproducibility of auricular subunits by measuring the coordinates of the marker points of auricular subunits, accordingly provide a reference for the improvement of auricular reconstruction and the aesthetics of auricular injection. Methods: Mimics 19.0 was used to carry out three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the computed tomography (CT) scan data of patients' brains; measure the three-dimensional coordinates of the 13 auricular subunit markers, the morphological auricle length and width, and the physiological auricle length and width; and analyze the reproducibility as well as the differences between group. Results: Reproducibility of auricle subunit markers: There are 1124 (58.82%) high reproducibility, 580 (30.35%) moderate reproducibility, and 207 (10.83%) low reproducibility. The superior tragus notch, tragus, and antitragus had the highest reproducibility. There was no significant difference between the groups in the marking points on the helix, and there were no statistically significant differences in the measurement values of the auricles on the two sides. The physiological ear length and width and the morphological ear length of males were larger than those of females. These showed significant differences between the age groups. Conclusion: Most auricular subunit markers have high reproducibility. The subunits with higher reproducibility are the structures that need to be optimized during auricle reconstruction surgery or auricle injection in the future. Introduction Auditory disabilities like tinnitus and hearing loss caused by exposure to blast overpressures are prevalent among military service members and veterans. The high-pressure fluctuations of blast waves induce hearing loss by injuring the tympanic membrane, ossicular chain, or sensory hair cells in the cochlea. The basilar membrane (BM) and organ of Corti (OC) behavior inside the cochlea during blast remain understudied. A computational finite element (FE) model of the full human ear was used by Bradshaw et al. (2023) to predict the motion of middle and inner ear tissues during blast exposure using a 3-chambered cochlea with Reissner's membrane and the BM. The inclusion of the OC in a blast transmission model would improve the model's anatomy and provide valuable insight into the inner ear response to blast exposure. Materials and Methods This study developed a microscale FE model of the OC, including the OC sensory hair cells, membranes, and structural cells, connected to a macroscale model of the ear to form a comprehensive multiscale model of the human peripheral auditory system. There are 5 rows of hair cells in the model, each row containing 3 outer hair cells (OHCs) and the corresponding Deiters' cells and stereociliary hair bundles. BM displacement 16.75 mm from the base induced by a 31 kPa blast overpressure waveform was derived from the macroscale human ear model reported by Bradshaw et al. (2023) and applied as input to the center of the BM in the OC. The simulation was run for 2 ms as a structural analysis in ANSYS Mechanical. Results The FE model results reported the displacement and principal strain of the OHCs, reticular lamina, and stereociliary hair bundles during blast transmission. The movement of the BM caused the rest of the OC to deform significantly. The reticular lamina displacement and strain amplitudes were highest where it connected to the OHCs, indicating that injury to this part of the OC may be likely due to blast exposure. Conclusions This microscale model is the first FE model of the OC to be connected to a macroscale model of the ear, forming a full multiscale ear model, and used to predict the OC's behavior under blast. Future work with this model will incorporate cochlear endolymphatic fluid, increase the number of OHC rows to 19 in total, and use the results of the model to reliably predict the sensorineural hearing loss resulting from blast exposure. The voltage gated (Kv) slow-inactivating delayed rectifier channel regulates the development of hollow organs of the zebrafish. The functional channel consists of the tetramer of electrically active Kcnb1 (Kv2.1) subunits and Kcng4b (Kv6.4) modulatory or electrically silent subunits. The two mutations in zebrafish kcng4b gene – kcng4b-C1 and kcng4b-C2 (Gasanov et al., 2021) – have been studied during ear development using electrophysiology, developmental biology and in silico structural modelling. kcng4b-C1 mutation causes a C-terminal truncation characterized by mild Kcng4b loss-of-function (LOF) manifested by failure of kinocilia to extend and formation of ectopic otoliths. In contrast, the kcng4b-C2 −/− mutation causes the C-terminal domain to elongate and the ectopic seventh transmembrane (TM) domain to form, converting the intracellular C-terminus to an extracellular one. Kcng4b-C2 acts as a Kcng4b gain-of-function (GOF) allele. Otoliths fail to develop and kinocilia are reduced in kcng4b-C2 −/− . These results show that different mutations of the silent subunit Kcng4 can affect the activity of the Kv channel and cause a wide range of developmental defects. Devolution in the United Kingdom heralded a significant change in democratic arrangements including associated accountability mechanisms in the form of public accounts committees (PACs) in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This paper investigates whether devolved arrangements have resulted in enhanced accountability. Based on documentary sources, survey data, and interviews with key stakeholders, this study finds that all three jurisdictions have a high level of public accountability, with Wales being the most effective PAC. While there are significant differences in the information and discussion phases of the committees' work, all three regions have comparable outcomes as a result of their deliberations. Few in vivo studies evaluate how ear cleaning affects treatment outcome.To determine the effect of ear cleaning on canine OE by comparing treatment outcome in cleaned versus noncleaned ears.Twenty‐three client‐owned dogs with ceruminous or purulent OE.Forty ears were randomised to one of two groups: 20 ears were wiped with dry or saline‐moistened gauze (grp1), and 20 external ear canals received manual cleaning (grp2) with a commercial product. One millilitre of a commercial otic suspension containing hydrocortisone aceponate, miconazole nitrate and gentamicin sulfate was applied to affected ears every 24 h for five days. Cytological scores, modified otitis index score (OTIS3), pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS), modified PVAS and client questionnaire were compared on Day (D)0 and D7.There were no statistical differences between cytological scores, modified OTIS3, PVAS, modified PVAS or client assessments between groups at D7. Both groups had significant reduction in all treatment parameters from D0 to D7 with the exception of cytological rod scores that were only significantly decreased in cleaned ears. There was a significant difference in OTIS3 before and after cleaning on D0.Both groups achieved successful outcome regardless of cleaning. The active/passive distinction, once a hallmark of classical metaphysics, has largely been discarded from contemporary thought. The revival of powers theory has not seen an equally vigorous rehabilitation of the real distinction between active and passive powers. I begin an analysis and vindication with a critique of E.J. Lowe's discussion. I then argue that the active/passive problem is a metaphysical one, not a logical or logico‐linguistic one, and so logic is impotent to solve it. Following this is a discussion of the rights and wrongs of Aristotle's and Aquinas's (identical) defence of the distinction. We will see that one main part of their analysis is a bright red herring while the other part contains the solution to the problem. I then state and clarify the key Scholastic principle concerning action and passion, which I call the Fundamental Thesis – one that will appear scandalous to contemporary ears, yet from which we can derive the tools needed to understand action and passion in the right way. I end with a definition of what I call the Minimal Metaphysical Agent, where the formulation is to be understood as an epistemic criterion for identifying agent and patient in a given causal interaction. Background: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common disease in ear, nose, and throat clinics characterized by aural fullness and hearing loss and mainly caused by eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Tympanostomy tube insertion (TTI) is a conventional surgical treatment option that can alleviate symptoms but does not provide a definitive cure, and it is prone to recurrence. Balloon dilation eustachian tuboplasty (BDET) has become a novel procedure for the treatment of ETD, demonstrating significant potential in addressing the aforementioned limitations. However, it is not widely available in the clinic and few high-quality randomized clinical trials was conducted to investigate its long-term efficacy and security in OME. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify the efficacy of BDET combined with TTI for patients with OME and its prospects for providing a definitive cure. Methods and analysis: This is a prospective, parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled prospective trial. Totally 124 patients with OME will be randomized into either group A or B. Group A will receive conventional therapy (TTI) while group B will use BDET therapy in addition to TTI. Outcome assessments will take place at baseline and at the 3rd, 6th, 12th, and 24th months after surgery. The primary outcome is eustachian tube function, which will be measured by the eustachian tube dysfunction questionnaire (ETDQ-7) and eustachian tube score (ETS). The secondary outcomes include middle ear function, hearing situation, and quality of life, which will be measured by acoustic impedance measurement, pure-tone audiometry, and Chinese-version Chronic Ear Survey (CCES). The main analysis of change in the outcomes will use mixed-model with repeated measures (MMRM) analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Discussion: This is the first prospective trial in Chinese populations that aims to validate the long-term efficacy and safety of BDET-combined TTI therapy in patients with OME. This parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled trial may provide an opportunity to decrease the recurrence rate of OME and explore a definitive cure for patients with OME. This trial's rigorous design enhances the reliability of the findings, ensuring a robust answer to the research question. Sound stimulation can influence electrophysiological vestibular reflexes. However, the effects of sound stimulation on space perception remain unknown.To know the effects of monaural sound stimulation on subjective visual vertical (SVV).We measured SVV with and without monaural sound stimulation (105 dB, 500 Hz short tone burst presented at 4.7 Hz) in 50 healthy volunteers (aged 20–77 [mean = 42.7] years).The mean SVV was deviated 0.139° to the left by right monaural sound stimulation and 0.123° to the right by left monaural sound stimulation. SVV changes due to right and left ear stimulations were significantly different (p = 0.019). Sound stimulation resulted in a significant change in SVV on the left side (p = 0.014) in participants aged 50 or younger (mean = 35.6 years) (n = 37).This study is the first to show the possibility that the monaural sound input deviates the SVV toward the opposite side and is more pronounced for left-ear input. The vestibular-evoked myogenic potential responses may be involved in the mechanism of the contralateral SVV deviation due to sound input. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Auditory space has been conceptualized as a matrix of systematically arranged combinations of binaural disparity cues that arise in the superior olivary complex (SOC). The computational code for interaural time and intensity differences utilizes excitatory and inhibitory projections that converge in the inferior colliculus (IC). The challenge is to determine the neural circuits underlying this convergence and to model how the binaural cues encode location. It has been shown that midbrain neurons are largely excited by sound from the contralateral ear and inhibited by sound leading at the ipsilateral ear. In this context, ascending projections from the lateral superior olive (LSO) to the IC have been reported to be ipsilaterally glycinergic and contralaterally glutamatergic. This study used CBA/CaH mice (3-6 months old) and applied unilateral retrograde tracing techniques into the IC in conjunction with immunocytochemical methods with glycine and glutamate transporters (GlyT2 and vGLUT2, respectively) to analyze the projection patterns from the LSO to the IC. Glycinergic and glutamatergic neurons were spatially intermixed within the LSO, and both types projected to the IC. For GlyT2 and vGLUT2 neurons, the average percentage of ipsilaterally and contralaterally projecting cells was similar (ANOVA, p = 0.48). A roughly equal number of GlyT2 and vGLUT2 neurons did not project to the IC. The somatic size and shape of these neurons match the descriptions of LSO principal cells. A minor but distinct population of small (< 40 mm2) neurons that labeled for GlyT2 did not project to the IC; these cells emerge as candidates for inhibitory local circuit neurons. Our findings indicate a symmetric and bilateral projection of glycine and glutamate neurons from the LSO to the IC. The differences between our results and those from previous studies suggest that species and habitat differences have a significant role in mechanisms of binaural processing and highlight the importance of research methods and comparative neuroscience. The traditional speaker-centric synthesis methods prioritize language accuracy but overlook emotional connection and feedback mechanisms with the audience. This paper is dedicated to an in-depth exploration of responsive speaker-listener generation, aiming to enhance communication by providing real-time non-verbal feedback such as head movements and facial expressions. Driven by video, we extract 3DMM coefficients to model facial features and head poses. Combining this with a Transformer speech encoder extracting 45-dimensional acoustic features, we achieve speaker generation at the sentence level. For responsive listener generation, we introduce two attention mechanisms in the Transformer decoder: cross-modal multi-head attention aligning audio-motion modalities and biased causal self-attention suitable for longer audio sequences. Finally, by aligning audio with a behavioral model and optimizing an enhanced neural renderer for facial images, we successfully achieve precise control over facial movements. Due to scarcity of anomaly situations in the early manufacturing stage, an unsupervised anomaly detection (UAD) approach is widely adopted which only uses normal samples for training. This approach is based on the assumption that the trained UAD model will accurately reconstruct normal patterns but struggles with unseen anomalies. To enhance the UAD performance, reconstruction-by-inpainting based methods have recently been investigated, especially on the masking strategy of suspected defective regions. However, there are still issues to overcome: (1) time-consuming inference due to multiple masking, (2) output inconsistency by random masking, and (3) inaccurate reconstruction of normal patterns for large masked areas. Motivated by this, this study proposes a novel reconstruction-by-inpainting method, dubbed Excision And Recovery (EAR), that features single deterministic masking based on the ImageNet pre-trained DINO-ViT and visual obfuscation for hint-providing. Experimental results on the MVTec AD dataset show that deterministic masking by pre-trained attention effectively cuts out suspected defective regions and resolves the aforementioned issues 1 and 2. Also, hint-providing by mosaicing proves to enhance the performance than emptying those regions by binary masking, thereby overcomes issue 3. The proposed approach achieves a high performance without any change of the model structure. Promising results are shown through laboratory tests with public industrial datasets. To suggest EAR be possibly adopted in various industries as a practically deployable solution, future steps include evaluating its applicability in relevant manufacturing environments. The Pinna nobilis, a Mediterranean mollusc, has suffered population declines due to a massive mortality event associated with various factors including the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae. Some populations show resilience, possibly due to local environmental conditions. In this study, a molecular multiplex PCR method was developed using species‐specific primers targeting Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions of P. nobilis and P. rudis, allowing accurate species identification and hybrid detection. Samples from Mediterranean areas were analysed, including putative hybrids and individuals from five other bivalve species. DNA was isolated, ITS regions were amplified and sequenced, and phylogenetic analyses confirmed species differentiation and primer specificity. The multiplex‐PCR successfully identified P. nobilis, P. rudis, and their hybrids based on distinct amplicon patterns. This study highlights the value of molecular tools in species conservation, especially for monitoring and managing hybridization, supporting effective biodiversity conservation strategies. Auricular chondritis of unknown cause was suspected in a 10‐year‐old male Bolognese dog with a five‐month history of painful bilateral nodular and ulcerative pyogranulomatous dermatitis of the pinnae with putative auricular cartilage destruction. Sinus tympani is one of the hidden space in the retrotympanic area of middle ear which is commonly invaded by cholesteatoma and known for recidivism. Conventional surgical approaches sometimes fail to access deep sinuses and eradicate the disease. The aim of our study was to measure endoscopic depth of Sinus tympani in Indian Population. Total of 30 patients underwent mastoid exploration and intraoperatively depth of Sinus Tympani was measured using a 0.5 mm calibrated probe with 30 degree rigid Hopkins endoscope. Endoscopic depth in the present study ranges between 2.5 and 5.5 mm. It was higher in right ear in case of females however no significant difference were seen in males and females on left side. It is difficult to clear disease from Sinus Tympani because of its inaccessible location. Sinus Tympani can also show variations in terms of its depth further making difficult to clear disease. Simple Summary: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are the most common cancers worldwide and surgical excision is the first-line treatment. Brachytherapy, which delivers a high dose of radiation to tumor tissue while sparing healthy tissue, represents a curative and conservative alternative in certain situations, particularly in elderly patients. Since the withdrawal of iridium wires from the market, brachytherapy has mainly been performed with high-dose-rate iridium-192 (HDR). Few studies and recommendations exist on HDR brachytherapy. Our study aims to evaluate the efficacy of HDR brachytherapy in terms of local control, survival, toxicity, and quality of life in patients with facial periorificial cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma treated in our center between 2015 and 2021. While treatment of localized cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is based on surgery, brachytherapy, which delivers a high dose of radiation to tumor tissue while sparing healthy tissue, is an alternative. Since the withdrawal of iridium wires from the market, brachytherapy has mainly been performed with high-dose-rate iridium-192 (HDR). This study evaluated the efficacy of HDR brachytherapy in terms of local control, survival, toxicity, and quality of life in patients with facial periorificial cutaneous SCC or BCC treated in our center between 2015 and 2021. Sixty-seven patients were treated for SCC (n = 49) or BCC (n = 18), on the nose (n = 29), lip (n = 28), eyelid (n = 7), or ear (n = 3). The majority had Tis or T1 tumors (73.1%). After a median follow-up of 28 months, 8 patients had a local recurrence. The local control rate at 3 years was 87.05% (95% CI 74.6–93.7). All patients developed grade 1–2 acute radio-mucositis or radiodermatitis and one experienced reversible grade 3 acute radio-mucositis. Of the 27 patients who completed the quality-of-life questionnaire, 77.8% recommended the treatment. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the sound quality of vehicle interior noise, a novel sound quality prediction model was proposed based on the physiological response predicted metrics, i.e., loudness, sharpness, and roughness. First, a human-ear sound transmission model was constructed by combining the outer and middle ear finite element model with the cochlear transmission line model. This model converted external input noise into cochlear basilar membrane response. Second, the physiological perception models of loudness, sharpness, and roughness were constructed by transforming the basilar membrane response into sound perception related to neuronal firing. Finally, taking the calculated loudness, sharpness, and roughness of the physiological model and the subjective evaluation values of vehicle interior noise as the parameters, a sound quality prediction model was constructed by TabNet model. The results demonstrate that the loudness, sharpness, and roughness computed by the human-ear physiological model exhibit a stronger correlation with the subjective evaluation of sound quality annoyance compared to traditional psychoacoustic parameters. Furthermore, the average error percentage of sound quality prediction based on the physiological model is only 3.81%, which is lower than that based on traditional psychoacoustic parameters. The vestigial pinna-orienting system in humans is capable of increasing the activity of several auricular muscles in response to lateralized transient auditory stimuli. For example, transient increases in electromyographic activity in the posterior auricular muscle (PAM) to an attention-capturing stimulus have been documented. For the current study, surface electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from the PAMs and superior auricular muscles (SAMs) of 10 normal-hearing participants. During the experiments, lateralized transient auditory stimuli, such as a crying baby, a shattering vase, or the participant's first names, were presented. These transient stimuli were either presented in silence or when participants actively listened to a podcast. Although ipsilateral PAM activity increased in response to transient stimuli, the SAM displayed the opposite behavior, i.e., a brief, ipsilateral suppression of activity. This suppression of ipsilateral SAM activity was more frequent on the right (75%) than left side (35%), whereas an ipsilateral PAM increase was roughly equal in prevalence on the two sides (left: 90%, right: 95%). During the active listening task, SAM suppression on the right ear was significantly larger in response to ipsilateral stimuli, compared with contralateral ones (P = 0.002), whereas PAM activity increased significantly (P = 0.002). Overall, this study provides evidence of a systematic transient suppression of the SAM during exogenous attention. This could suggest a more complex system than previously assumed, as the presence of synchronized excitatory and inhibitory components in different auricular muscles points toward a coordinated attempt at reflexively orienting the pinna toward a sound. Although domestic dogs vary considerably in both body size and skull morphology, behavioural audiograms have previously been found to be similar in breeds as distinct as a Chihuahua and a St Bernard. In this study, we created micro‐CT reconstructions of the middle ears and bony labyrinths from the skulls of 17 dog breeds, including both Chihuahua and St Bernard, plus a mongrel and a wolf. From these reconstructions, we measured middle ear cavity and ossicular volumes, eardrum and stapes footplate areas and bony labyrinth volumes. All of these ear structures scaled with skull size with negative allometry and generally correlated better with condylobasal length than with maximum or interaural skull widths. Larger dogs have larger ear structures in absolute terms: the volume of the St Bernard's middle ear cavity was 14 times that of the Chihuahua. The middle and inner ears are otherwise very similar in morphology, the ossicular structure being particularly well‐conserved across breeds. The expectation that larger ear structures in larger dogs would translate into hearing ranges shifted towards lower frequencies is not consistent with the existing audiogram data. Assuming that the audiograms accurately reflect the hearing of the breeds in question, oversimplifications in existing models of middle ear function or limitations imposed by other parts of the auditory system may be responsible for this paradox. Cartilage is a strong and flexible connective tissue that has many forms and functions in our body. While cartilage exhibits some forms of limited repair, for the most part, it is not particularly regenerative. Thus, in situations where patients require cartilage reconstruction, surgeons may use autografts to replace missing or damaged tissue. Cartilage tissues from different regions of the body exhibit histological differences and are in limited supply. Thus, it is important to characterize these differences to determine the most appropriate autograft source. In the case of microtia, a congenital deformity where the pinna is underdeveloped, reconstruction commonly utilizes cartilage sourced from a patient's own costal cartilage. This presents a potential morbidity risk. In this study, we evaluate the histological characteristics of microtia cartilage compared with normal auricular and costal cartilage obtained from human patients undergoing surgical resection. Histochemistry was used to evaluate cellularity, lipid content, and ECM content. Using a Bayesian statistical approach, we determined that while costal cartilage is the standard tissue donor, the microanatomy of microtia cartilage more closely reflects normal auricular cartilage than costal cartilage. The aim of this study was to evaluate existing staging recommendations for peri-implantitis and its applicability for auricular bone anchoring. In this cross-sectional study, 44 patients treated with 47 ear epitheses and 128 implants were analyzed over 191.6 months (mean). Peri-implant sulcus depth, sulcus fluid flow rate, and peri-implant skin reaction, as well as cleaning habits and patients' quality of life, were analyzed. Mixed effect linear and mixed effect ordered logistic regression models were used. Two of the 128 implants were lost (1.6 %). A total of 14.5 % of all patients presented light erythemas, 19.4 % showed stage 2, 4.8 % stage 3, and 12.9 % an acute infection according to Holgers. A correlation between skin reaction and sulcus fluid flow rate was observed, when grouping patients with acute signs of inflammation. Concerning patient satisfaction, 58.1 % of the patients were highly satisfied with their epitheses, 39.5 % very satisfied, and one patient was just satisfied. Younger age correlated with lower satisfaction rates. Implant-retained auricular epitheses are a safe, highly sufficient and satisfying way of extending ear reconstruction. Sulcus depth and skin reaction are quick and valuable assessment tools in auricular implants, but skin reaction alone was clinically insufficient to predict peri-implant pocket inflammation. Complex auditory scenes pose a challenge to attentive listening, rendering listeners slower and more uncertain in their perceptual decisions. How can we explain such behaviors from the dynamics of cortical networks that pertain to the control of listening behavior? We here follow up on the hypothesis that human adaptive perception in challenging listening situations is supported by modular reconfiguration of auditory-control networks in a sample of N = 40 participants (13 males) who underwent resting-state and task functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Individual titration of a spatial selective auditory attention task maintained an average accuracy of ~70% but yielded considerable interindividual differences in listeners' response speed and reported confidence in their own perceptual decisions. Whole-brain network modularity increased from rest to task by reconfiguring auditory, cinguloopercular, and dorsal attention networks. Specifically, interconnectivity between the auditory network and cinguloopercular network decreased during the task relative to the resting state. Additionally, interconnectivity between the dorsal attention network and cinguloopercular network increased. These interconnectivity dynamics were predictive of individual differences in response confidence, the degree of which was more pronounced after incorrect judgments. Our findings uncover the behavioral relevance of functional cross talk between auditory and attentional-control networks during metacognitive assessment of one's own perception in challenging listening situations and suggest two functionally dissociable cortical networked systems that shape the considerable metacognitive differences between individuals in adaptive listening behavior. When individuals are exposed to two pure tones with close frequencies presented separately in each ear, they perceive a third sound known as binaural beats (BB), characterized by a frequency equal to the difference between the two tones. Previous research has suggested that BB may influence brain activity, potentially benefiting attention and relaxation. In this study, we hypothesized that the impact of BB on cognition and EEG is linked to the spatial characteristics of the sound. Participants listened to various types of spatially moving sounds (BB, panning and alternate beeps) at 6Hz and 40Hz frequencies. EEG measurements were conducted throughout the auditory stimulation, and participants completed questionnaires on relaxation, affect, and a sustained attention task. The results indicated that binaural, panning sounds and alternate beeps had a more pronounced effect on electrical brain activity than the control condition. Additionally, an improvement in relaxation was observed with these sounds at both 6Hz and 40Hz. The quality of romantic relationships can predict health consequences related to aging. DNA methylation-based biomarkers of aging accurately estimate chronological age. We developed several highly accurate epigenetic aging clocks, based on highly conserved mammalian CpGs, for the socially monogamous prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In addition, our dual-species human-vole clock accurately measured relative age and illustrates high species conservation of epigenetic aging effects. Next, we assessed how pair bonding impacts epigenetic aging. We did not find evidence that pair-bonded voles exhibit accelerated or decelerated epigenetic aging effects in blood, ear, liver, or brain tissue. Our epigenome wide association study identified CpGs in five genes strongly associated with pair bonding: Foxp4, Phf2, Mms22l, Foxb1, and Eif1ad. Overall, we present accurate DNA methylation-based estimators of age for a species of great interest to researchers studying monogamy in animals. Background: Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) are gaining importance in research and as a clinical tool to measure pre- and post-surgical patient satisfaction. The EAR-Q, an example of a clinically used PROM, focuses on patient satisfaction regarding their ears. However, the absence of EAR-Q scores in adults without external ear conditions causes challenging interpretation of the results in patients with ear conditions. Therefore, this study aims to find normative data for scales of the EAR-Q in healthy adults. Methods: This cross-sectional, single centre study included 515 healthy adults without conditions of the external ears. The participants filled in an online questionnaire with questions from the EAR-Q scales. A Rasch score between 0 and 100 was calculated, in which higher scores correlate with more satisfaction of that particular scale. Results: Mean scores for the EAR-Q ± standard deviation were: appearance 74 ± 20, adverse effects 94 ± 9, appearance distress 78 ± 14, psychological 64 ± 15 and social 66 ± 13. There was no difference in appearance scale between males and females; however, females scored lower on the appearance distress scale and psychological scale. Participants aged 30 and older scored higher on the appearance scale and appearance distress scale. Conclusions: This is the first study to generate normative data for the EAR-Q in an adult population without ear conditions. The presented findings and normal scores support future research and clinical implementation of the EAR-Q. Clinicians can guide decision-making with these normative data as a reference point. Background: Cochlear implantation (CI) surgery has become a prevalent method of hearing rehabilitation, since it has been acknowledged that it impacts effectively on the vestibular system. However, there is still no consensus among clinicians on the most appropriate age and area (lateral/bilateral) of CI surgery in terms of postural control. The present study aimed to assess the postural control in late lateral CI adolescents with different visual (eyes opened(EO)/eyes closed(EC)) and auditory (CI activated/deactivated) conditions and to build a theoretical model of postural control based on sensual compensatory mechanisms that are predominant in late CI individuals. It was hypothesized that kinesthetic sensation and exteroceptors of the superficial sensation are critical for neuromuscular control after late CI. Methods: A quasi-experimental study protocol was used in this study to assess the postural stability performance in the studied adolescents with different visual and auditory perceptions. 27 adolescent students with hearing loss participated in the study. A force plate (Accu Gait AMTI) with computer software (NetForce) was used in the study to assess the postural stability with four different conditions(EO)/EC), CI activated/deactivated). Results: vCOP was found to have a significant growing tendency within the conditions of CI activated/deactivated.No statistically significant relationships were noted between the range of the displacement of feet pressure (Area) and both the visual and auditory conditions. Hearing loss etiology was statistically significantly related to the values of vCOP, within the conditions of EO, CI activated/deactivated (p < 0.01), what did not occure with the condition of EC (p > 0.05). Neuromuscular control with the condition of EC x CI deactivated was found to be based on the kinesthetic-tactual compensatory model. Conclusions: Kinesthetic sensation and exteroceptors of the superficial sensation seem to be the predominant source of information to maintain postural control in late CI adolescents, regardless of the visual and auditory conditions. The etiology of hearing loss (congenital/acquired) can be a predictor of the values of the vCOP. In order to improve neuromuscular control in this population, it is recommended that the patients perform physical activity tasks, especially to develop core muscles, based on direct stimulation and rotational stability. Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a systemic immune mediated disease characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation in various cartilage-rich areas. RP may cause extensive tissue destruction and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this multicenter study, we considered the remission status and long-term outcomes of RP in patients who were followed-up in six referral rheumatology centers in Iran. Outcomes of disease was assessed by remission status and RP induced damage. A total of 29 patients with RP were examined for enrollment in the study, and 26 patients with a minimum follow-up period of 6 months were included in the RP outcome analysis. Median time to control of symptoms and sustained remission were 5 and 23 weeks, respectively. Prednisolone was discontinued in 8 (30.8%) patients and medication-free remission was achieved in 7 (23.1%) patients. Regarding the disease course, 34.6% of patients had a relapsing–remitting course, 42.3% had a monophasic course, and 23.1% had an always-active course. Despite extensive treatment with immunosuppressive medications, RP induced damage was developed in 21 (80.8%) patients. Ear deformity and osteoporosis were the most common RP induced damage. BACKGROUND: As a dominant breed pig in southwest China, the southern Yunnan small-ear pig has been widely used as an experimental animal in the basic research of other disciplines, but there are still no reports on its application in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. OBJECTIVE: To establish a large animal model of the southern Yunnan small-ear pig with anterior cruciate ligament with autologous Achilles tendon was established. METHODS: Twenty adult female Yunnan small-ear pigs were equally randomized into two groups. In the autologous Achilles tendon group, the right knee anterior cruciate ligament was reconstructed with autologous Achilles tendon as a graft, while in the sham-operated group, a similar operation was performed on the right knee without any treatment of the anterior cruciate ligament. General conditions of each pig were observed and recorded before and 12 months after surgery. Ligaments and grafts were taken for gross observation and MAS scoring. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was performed to observe morphological characteristics of ligaments. The staining and arrangement of type I and type III collagen were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe the type, size, diameter, ratio, and distribution of collagen fibers in ligaments. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: All animals had normal diet and activity, good wound healing, no obvious inflammatory reaction, no local purulent infection, and no significant changes in mental and urinary conditions compared with those before surgery. The reconstructed cruciate ligament of the knee was intact, with no stiffness and normal range of motion. Both the anterior drawer and Lachman tests were negative. Gross observation of the graft: 12 months after surgery, the grafts was in good position, with good integrity, obvious tension, ligament color close to the original anterior cruciate ligament, and complete surface synovial coverage. Most of the intraarticular ligaments in the autologous Achilles tendon group were defined as MAS I type and a few were defined as MAS II type. In the sham-operated group, the intraarticular ligament was defined as MAS I type. Hematoxylin-eosin staining indicated that, 12 months after surgery, collagen fibers in the autologous Achilles tendon group began to appear bundled, isotropic, and uniformly arranged, with more obvious isotropic corrugations, and the nuclei were mainly linear or spindle-shaped, which were similar to those in normal anterior cruciate ligament tissue of the sham-operated group. Immunohistochemistry results indicated that, 12 months after surgery, there was a higher expression of type I collagen and significantly less expression of type III collagen in the reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament in the autologous Achilles tendon group. The degree of type I and type III staining was similar in the two groups. Under the transmission electron microscope, the diameter, arrangement and density of collagen fibers in the reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament of the autologous Achilles tendon group were similar to those of the original anterior cruciate ligament at 12 months after surgery, indicating that the ligament remodeling process had been basically completed in the autologous Achilles tendon group at 12 months after surgery. Through a comprehensive evaluation of animal general conditions, ligament general view, MAS score, hematoxylin-eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy observation, we successfully established a large animal model of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using autogenous Achilles tendon in southern Yunnan small-ear pigs, with good morphological, histological and ultrastructural results. The study of animal movement provides insights into underlying ecological processes and informs analyses of behaviour and resource use, which have implications for species management and conservation. The tools used to study animal movement have evolved over the past decades, allowing for data collection from a variety of species, including those living in remote environments. Satellite-linked radio and GPS collars have been used to study polar bear (Ursus maritimus) ecology and movements throughout the circumpolar Arctic for over 50 years. However, due to morphology and growth constraints, only adult female polar bears can be reliably collared. Collars have proven to be safe, but there has been opposition to their use, resulting in a deficiency in data across much of the species' range. To bolster knowledge of movement characteristics and behaviours for polar bears other than adult females, while also providing an alternative to collars, we tested the use of fur- and ear-mounted telemetry tags that can be affixed to polar bears of any sex and age. We tested three fur tag designs (SeaTrkr, tribrush and pentagon tags), which we affixed to 15 adult and 1 subadult male polar bears along the coast of Hudson Bay during August–September 2021–2022. Fur tags were compared with ear tags deployed on 42 subadult and adult male polar bears captured on the coast or the sea ice between 2016 and 2022. We used data from the tags to quantify the amount of time subadult and adult males spent resting versus traveling while on land. Our results show the three fur tag designs remained functional for shorter mean durations (SeaTrkr = 58 days; tribrush = 47 days; pentagon = 22 days) than ear tags (121 days), but positional error estimates were comparable among the Argos-equipped tags. The GPS/Iridium-equipped SeaTrkr fur tags provided higher resolution and more frequent location data. Combined, the tags provided sufficient data to model different behavioural states. Furthermore, as hypothesized, subadult and adult male polar bears spent the majority of their time resting while on land, increasing time spent traveling as temperatures cooled. Background: Red Ear Syndrome is a burning sensation and erythema of the ear, associated with a various number of disorders including migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, autoimmune disorders etc. Theories for RES pathophysiology have developed from current understandings of comorbid conditions. Characterizing the underlying mechanism of RES is crucial for defining effective treatments. Case presentation: Three caucasian patients, ages 15, 47, and 67 years, with migraine, one with erythromelalgia are reported in this manuscript. RES pathophysiology is not fully understood due to its variable clinical presentation and numerous comorbid conditions, making it difficult to identify effective treatments. Conclusion: RES seems to be largely treatment-resistant, and most options involve treating the associated disorders and minimizing pain. Congenital single-sided deafness (SSD) leads to an aural preference syndrome that is characterized by overrepresentation of the hearing ear in the auditory system. Cochlear implantation (CI) of the deaf ear is an effective treatment for SSD. However, the newly introduced auditory input in congenital SSD often does not reach expectations in late-implanted CI recipients with respect to binaural hearing and speech perception. In a previous study, a reduction of the interaural time difference (ITD) sensitivity has been shown in unilaterally congenitally deaf cats (uCDCs). In the present study, we focused on the interaural level difference (ILD) processing in the primary auditory cortex. The uCDC group was compared with hearing cats (HCs) and bilaterally congenitally deaf cats (CDCs). The ILD representation was reorganized, replacing the preference for the contralateral ear with a preference for the hearing ear, regardless of the cortical hemisphere. In accordance with the previous study, uCDCs were less sensitive to interaural time differences than HCs, resulting in unmodulated ITD responses, thus lacking directional information. Such incongruent ITDs and ILDs cannot be integrated for binaural sound source localization. In normal hearing, the predominant effect of each ear is excitation of the auditory cortex in the contralateral cortical hemisphere and inhibition in the ipsilateral hemisphere. In SSD, however, auditory pathways reorganized such that the hearing ear produced greater excitation in both cortical hemispheres and the deaf ear produced weaker excitation and preserved inhibition in both cortical hemispheres. 3D‐printed cell‐laden hydrogels as tissue constructs show great promise in generating living tissues for medicine. Currently, the maturation of 3D‐printed constructs into living tissues remains challenge, since commonly used hydrogels struggle to provide an ideal microenvironment for the seeded cells. In this study, a cell‐adaptable nanocolloidal hydrogel is created for 3D printing of maturable tissue constructs. The nanocolloidal hydrogel is composed of interconnected nanoparticles, which is prepared by the self‐assembly and subsequent photocrosslinking of the gelatin methacryloyl solutions. Cells can get enough space to grow and migrate within the hydrogel through squeezing the flexible nanocolloidal networks. Meanwhile, the nanostructure can promote the seeded cells to proliferate and produce matrix proteins through mechanotransduction. Using digital light process‐based 3D printing technology, it can rapidly customize cartilage tissue constructs. After implantation, these tissue constructs efficiently matured into cartilage tissues for the articular cartilage defect repair and ear cartilage reconstruction in vivo. Introduction: Hearing decline stands as the most prevalent single sensory deficit associated with the aging process. Giving compelling evidence suggesting a protective effect associated with the efferent auditory system, the goal of our study was to characterize the age-related changes in the number of efferent medial olivocochlear (MOC) synapses regulating outer hair cell (OHC) activity compared with the number of afferent inner hair cell ribbon synapses in CBA/J mice over their lifespan. Methods: Organs of Corti of 3-month-old CBA/J mice were compared with mice aged between 10 and 20 months, grouped at 2-month intervals. For each animal, one ear was used to characterize the synapses between the efferent MOC fibers and the outer hair cells (OHCs), while the contralateral ear was used to analyze the ribbon synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and type I afferent nerve fibers of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Each cochlea was separated in apical, middle, and basal turns, respectively. Results: The first significant age-related decline in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses was observed in the basal cochlear turn at 14 months, the middle turn at 16 months, and the apical turn at 18 months of age. In contrast, efferent MOCOHC synapses in CBA/J mice exhibited a less pronounced loss due to aging which only became significant in the basal and middle turns of the cochlea by 20 months of age. Discussion: This study illustrates an age-related reduction on efferent MOC innervation of OHCs in CBA/J mice starting at 20 months of age. Our findings indicate that the morphological decline of efferent MOC-OHC synapses due to aging occurs notably later than the decline observed in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses. In nearly half of the cases, otolaryngologists cannot identify the pathogens involved.In the present work, we described two cases of pyogenic perichondritis, with negative on conventional culture. However, using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), we detected fungal infections in the patients and after the patients were given anti-fungal treatment, the patients achieved a good prognosis.These cases highlighted the possibility that fungi might be the involved pathogens in patients who have had multiple negative bacterial cultures, and mNGS should be applied in these cases. mNGS could be used as a supplement to traditional culture methods.Case presentation: Suppurative perichondritis of the auricle is a common disease that can easily cause malformations if it develops into an uncontrolled infection. Background: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses reported varying degrees of cognitive failure. To prioritize patient safety in clinical settings, it is important and necessary to address and mitigate the symptoms of cognitive failure among nurses. Aim: This study was conducted in Iran to evaluate the impact of ear acupressure on occupational cognitive failure in nurses. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted with 54 nurses who experienced cognitive failure in 2022. Sampling was performed by convenience. Fifty-six nurses who scored 40 or higher on the occupational cognitive failure questionnaire were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (28 subjects) or the sham group (28 subjects). In the intervention group, pressure was applied to the shen-men point, zero point, hippocampus, master cerebral, brain, and memory 1 and 2 of the earlobes for six weeks using Vaccaria seeds. In the sham group, a sticker without seeds was applied at the same points as in the intervention group, and no pressure was applied. Cognitive failure was assessed at the beginning of the study (T0), at the end of the intervention (sixth week of study, T1), and four weeks after the end of the intervention (tenth week of study, T2). The data were collected using contextual data questionnaires and the Occupational Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (OCFQ). The data obtained from 54 nurses (28 in the sham group and 26 in the intervention group) were analyzed by SPSS v16 using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: The two groups had no significant differences regarding background variables. The between-group analysis revealed a significant interaction effect of time and intervention on cognitive failure (F = 60.320, p < 0.001, effect size = 0.537). The cognitive failure score in the intervention group was significantly lower at the end of the intervention and one month later than that in the sham group (p < 0.001). Within-group analysis revealed a significant difference in the cognitive failure scores of the intervention group at T0, T1, and T2 (61.231 ± 14.230, 34.000 ± 14.659, and 29.808 ± 14.266, respectively; F = 52.331, p < 0.001, effect size = 0.677). However, in the sham group, the cognitive failure score exhibited a brief but significant increase at T0, T1, and T2 (54.786 ± 11.239, 56.250 ± 10.950, and 56.000 ± 11.337, respectively; F = 6.369, p = 0.006, effect size = 0.191). Conclusion: Auriculotherapy has shown promise in improving occupational cognitive failure in nurses. It is recommended that nurses consider incorporating auriculotherapy as a complementary treatment modality, particularly through self-treatment programs, when experiencing symptoms of cognitive impairment. Background: Pharmacologic immunosuppression regimes are commonly employed in stem cell clinical trials to mitigate host immune rejection and promote survival and viability of transplanted cells. Immunosuppression and cell survival has been extensively studied in retinal and spinal tissues. The applicability of stem cell therapy is rapidly expanding to other sensory organs such as the ear and hearing. As regenerative therapy is directed to new areas, a greater understanding of immunosuppression strategies and their efficacy is required to facilitate translation to organ-specific biologic microenvironments. Objective: This systematic review appraises the current literature regarding immunosuppression strategies employed in stem cell trials of retinal and neural cells. Methods: This systematic review was performed in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Inclusion criteria included studies presenting data on neural or retinal cells as part of an in-human clinical trial that detailed the immunosuppression regime used. Exclusion criteria included non-English language studies, animal studies, review articles, case reports, editorials, and letters. The databases Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to February 2024. Risk of bias was evaluated using the ROBINS-I tool. Results: Eighteen articles fit the inclusion criteria. Nine articles concerned retinal cells, 5 concerned spinal cord injury, and 4 concerned amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A multi-drug and short-term immunosuppression regime were commonly employed in the identified studies. Detected immune responses in treated patients were rare. Common immunosuppression paradigms included tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and tapering doses of steroids. Local immunosuppression with steroids was employed in some studies concerning retinal diseases. Discussion: A short-term course of systemic immunosuppression seemed efficacious for most included studies, with some showing grafted cells viable months to years after immunosuppression had stopped. Background: Ménière's disease is a chronic condition of the inner ear that causes vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. Its diagnosis relies on clinical criteria that are subjective and pure-tone audiometry results that are not specific. Its pathological substrate is endolymphatic hydrops. Its imaging was recently made possible by the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. This technique was primarily tested on 3 T. Our objective was to prove its feasibility using a 1.5 T magnet. Methods: We conducted a prospective study including 30 patients who fulfilled the Bárány society criteria for Ménière's disease. We performed the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence on all patients. We used it to look for and grade endolymphatic hydrops in the utricle, the saccule and the cochlear canal using the Kahn method. Results: We found endolymphatic hydrops in all of the 30 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Ménière's disease. We had no false positives and only one false negative with a patient presenting with bilateral disease clinically but having endolymphatic hydrops only on one side. Thus, our correspondence rate between clinical and imaging findings was 97%. Conclusions: It is possible to diagnose endolymphatic hydrops with the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence using a 1.5 T MRI machine. Since Ménière's disease diagnosis is sometimes tricky, imaging endolymphatic hydrops can aid in the diagnosis when the clinical picture is incomplete. It also helps guide invasive treatment plans. Feasibility at 1.5 T ensures broader access to the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. Beyond the scope of Ménière's disease, this sequence offers the possibility to better understand pressure-related inner ear diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
