In every 100 normal women regularly exposed to conception throughout the year and not protected by any contraceptive measure the pregnancy rate is reported to be 80-90%. Reported rates for those who used the diaphragm and jelly ranged between 12-18%. In Puerto Rico women using this method had a pregnancy rate of 33%. In a Baltimore study 333 women who used only suppositories containing phenylmercuric acetate were observed for 6-28 months. Their total period of exposure to pregnancy was 350.8 woman-years. Pregnancy occurred in 57 cases or 16.2/100 woman-years of exposure. In 18 of these 57 cases the women admitted failure to use the suppository on 1 or more occasions. There were then 39 conceptions despite the regular use of suppositories or 11.1/100 woman-years of exposure. In a South Carolina study several types of contraceptives were used and the patients observed over intervals of 12-37 months. Total periods of exposure to pregnancy were 1757.3 patient-years. There were 79 pregnancies with 4.5 conceptions per 100 woman-years. In the authors clinic a group of women who used the phyenylmercuric acetate suppositories for over 5 years were compared with a group who had employed the diaphragm and jelly method. Pregnancy rates were similar being 9.9 for the diaphragm and jelly group and 10.4 for the suppository group. The acceptability of the suppository was found to be greater than that of the diaphragm. Phenylmercuric acetate has been shown to be an efficient spermicide. No systemic effect from the mercurial has been observed in over 2000 patients over a 5-year period. A 3 gm suppository containing .05% of the drug and 10% of glyceryl laurate in a water dispersable synthetic wax was used. Melting time was 10 minutes. This method is recommended as the best available. In an accompanying discussion E.F. Pena still preferred the diaphragm and jelly method.
