Journal of materials science 53(14), 10411-10422 (2018). doi:10.1007/s10853-018-2310-8, (100) Oriented niobium (Nb) crystals annealed in the vacuum conditions close to that used in mass production of 1.3 GHz superconducting radio frequency cavities for linear accelerators and treated in nitrogen at a partial pressure of 0.04 mbar at temperatures of 800 and 900 °C have been studied. The surfaces of the nitrogen-treated samples were investigated by means of various surface-sensitive techniques, including grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in planar view and on cross-sections prepared by a focused ion beam. The appearance of a dense layer of epitaxial rectangular precipitates has been observed for the Niobium nitrided at 900 °C. Increased nitrogen concentration in the near-surface region was detected by glow-discharge optical-emission spectroscopy, focused ion-beam cross-sectional images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Crystalline phases of NbO and β-Nb2N were identified by X-ray diffraction. This information was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron measurements, which in addition revealed the presence of Nb2O5, NbON, NbN, and NbN x O y components on the surface. These results establish the near-surface Nb phase composition after high-temperature nitrogen treatment, which is important for obtaining a better understanding of the improved RF cavity performance., Published by Springer Science + Business Media B.V, Dordrecht [u.a.]

3. Simulation study of ion effect in the ILC electron damping ring

Ion effect has been recognized as one of the very high priorities of the R&D for the damping rings of the International Linear Collider (ILC) due to multi-bunch operation of extremely low emittance and very high intensity beam. In this paper, we study the ion density near the beam analytically considering the mini-train fill pattern case. The result shows that the gap between the bunch trains can reduce the ion density significantly. Meanwhile, a simulation code is employed to study the fast ion instability in the ILC electron damping ring. Various fill patterns and gas pressures in the ring are investigated. Feedback system is also applied in the simulation.

Deep-inelastic e^\pm p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q^2 up to 30000 GeV^2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the HERA centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements d sigma / d Q^2, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb^-1 of e^- p data and 100.8 pb^-1 of e^+ p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales Lambda ranging between 1.6 - 5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M / lambda > 0.3 - 1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of M_S > 0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of R_q < 1.0 x 10^-18 m., 15 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables

We start with an introduction to plasma wakefield acceleration and the motivation for using proton drivers. We then describe the self-modulation instability – a key to an early realization of the concept. This is then followed by the historical development of the experimental design, where the critical issues that arose and their solutions are described. We conclude with the design of the experiment as it is being realized at CERN and some words on the future outlook. The first run of the LHC propelled particle physics into the Terascale, the TeV energy domain and was rewarded with the triumph of the discovery of a Higgs boson. Precision measurements of elementary cross sections and couplings so far beautifully confirm the Standard Model, which is however known to be incomplete. Significantly increased statistics and higher energy reach may provide the sensitivity to shake its foundations, while other experiments and facilities may be needed to complete the physics interpretation.

Modern, general purpose high energy physics experiments are designed to record the events of physics processes which greatly differ in rate. Both rare signatures with trigger rates of order 1 Hz and minimum bias interactions with rates sometimes approaching 1 MHz have to be triggered at the same time. The typical means of accommodating these requirements within a limited bandwidth is to downscale individual trigger channels appropriately. This paper describes a novel procedure for finding an optimized set of downscale factors that automatically adapts to the beam conditions. A first application at the H1 experiment at HERA showed that the number of events recorded for specific channels could be significantly increased.

We present a new measurement of the total photoproduction cross section performed with the H1 detector at HERA. For an average centre of mass energy of 200 GeV a value of σtotλp=165±2±11µb has been obtained. A detailed analysis of the data in adequate kinematic regions enabled a decomposition of the total cross section in its elastic, single diffractive dissociation and remaining non-diffractive parts, based on safe assumptions on the double diffractive dissociation contribution.

A search for direct production of new leptons in the mass range from 10 GeV up to 225 GeV is presented by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data were obtained during 1993 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 528 nb −1 . The search includes heavy lepton decays to final states e ( ν ) γ and e ( ν ) W , e ( ν ) Z with the subsequent decay of the W and Z bosons into jets or lepton pairs. No evidence was found for the production of new massive electrons or neutrinos in any of the decay channels. Rejection limits for excited electrons and neutrinos are derived.

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 for four-momentum transfers Q > 2 larger than 8.7 GeV 2 . The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q 2 . Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G ( x , Q 0 2 ) at Q 2 2 = 20 GeV 2 .

A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Measurements of the scattered electron energy spectrum and the differential cross sections dσ/d log(x) and dσ/dQ2 for inclusive neutral current deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are presented. The data were obtained with the H1 detector at HERA during its first running period in which 26.7 GeV electrons collided with 820 GeV protons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.3 nb−1 and allow the first studies of the structure of the proton at values of x down to 10−4 for Q2 > 5 GeV2.

A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e^+p and e^-p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117 pb^{-1}. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum. Constraints on leptoquark models are established. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength, leptoquarks with masses up to 275-325 GeV are ruled out. These limits improve and supercede earlier H1 limits based on subsamples of the data used here., 15 pages, 1 table, 5 figures

A few open questions in the experimental QCD programme at the ep collider HERA are discussed warranting the extended studies planned at the upgraded accelerator. The fate of remaining low statistics experimental puzzles from the existing data samples will be resolved. The status of the upgrade of the collider is presented.

Since the end of the 1995 HERA running period the second level (L2) trigger system of the H1 experiment has been in operation. The L2 decision is presently derived from a combination of two independent hardware systems; one is based on the output of neural networks while the other decides on the grounds of topological event signatures in the detector. In contrast to the first level trigger (L1), which is fully pipelined and operates at the HERA bunch crossing rate of 10.4 MHz, the decision of the L2 systems is delivered within 20 /spl mu/s of the preceding L1 keep signal, allowing sufficient time for transmission of trigger information and computation of the L2 trigger response. This scheme significantly reduces the trigger rate, with minimal impact on detector deadtime for L1 rates below 1 kHz. The L2 trigger has proven to be flexible and highly effective in isolating physics processes from background.

The H1 and ZEUS collaborations have reported on the observation of an excess of events at very large Q 2 in deep-inelastic ep collisions at HERA. New data from the 97 data-taking up to the summer are included in this paper. In addition, events with a high p t lepton, hadronic activity and large missing transverse momentum are observed. Their rate is compared to the expectations for W± production and background processes.

A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic $e^\pm p \rightarrow e^\pm \, hadrons$ scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of $0.909 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ and $2.947 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections $d\sigma / dQ^2$ are measured in the $Q^2$ range bet\-ween $160 \ \GeV^2$ and $20,000 \ \GeV^2$. The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron--quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 2 figures appended as uuencoded file

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of \ee data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in \ep interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in \ee annihilation. The measured area, peak position and widthof the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the \ee squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. Events with no hadronic energy flow in a large interval of pseudo-rapidity in the proton direction are observed in photon-proton interactions at an average centre of mass energy 〈√sγp〉 of 200 GeV These events are interpreted as photon diffractive dissociation. Evidence for hard scattering in photon diffractive dissociation is demonstrated using inclusive single particle spectra, thrust as a function of transverse energy, and the observation of jet production. The data can be described by a Monte Carlo calculation including hard photon-pomeron scattering.

A measurement of the proton structure function $F_{\!2}(x,Q^2)$ is reported for momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ between 4.5 $GeV^2$ and 1600 $GeV^2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $1.8\cdot10^{-4}$ and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that $F_{\!2}$ increases significantly with decreasing $x$, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The $Q^2$ dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the "diffractive" contribution to $F_{\!2}$., 32 pages, ps, appended as compressed, uuencoded file

Photon-proton ($\gamma p$) interactions with~$Q^25$~GeV$^2$ are studied at the high energy electron-proton collider HERA. The transverse energy flow and relative rates of large rapidity gap events are compared in the two event samples. The observed similarity between $\gamma p$ and $\gamma^* p$ interactions can be understood in a picture where the photon develops as a hadronic object. The transverse energy density measured in the central region of the collision, at $\eta^*=0$ in the $\gamma^* p$ centre of mass frame, is compared with data from hadron-hadron interactions as function of the CMS energy of the collision., Comment: 15 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

A search in the H1 experiment at HERA for scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons and squarks coupling to first generation fermions is presented in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 425 nb−1. For masses ranging up to ∼275 GeV, no significant evidence for the direct production of such particles is found in various possible decay channels. At high masses and beyond the centre of mass energy of 296 GeV a contact interaction analysis is used to further constrain the couplings and masses of new vector leptoquarks and to set lower limits on compositeness scales.

Results on diffractive photoproduction of psi(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb(-1). The energy dependence of the diffractive psi(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/psi mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative psi(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as e(bt), yields b(el)(psi(2S)) = (4.31 +/- 0.57 +/- 0.46) GeV-2, compatible with that of the J/psi. For the proton dissociative channel the result b(pd)(psi(2S)) = (0.59 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.12) GeV-2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/psi. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Multi-jet production is observed in deep-inelastic electron proton scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. Jet rates for momentum transfers squared up to 500 GeV2 are determined using the JADE jet clustering algorithm. They are found to be in agreement with predictions from QCD based models.
