Environmental risk perception has a long-time travel in the public participation in environmental fields. This perception involves individually socially constructed physical and mental experiences that involve many factors just for knowledge, attitudes, and the culture that develops in society. An individual's understanding of environmental risk provides an overview of an individual's preparedness for appropriate environmental risk strategies and measures. This cross-sectional survey study aims to collect data on the environmental risk perception of Indonesian students. The survey data instrument used in this study is the environmental risk perception scale (ERPS) questionnaire, transformed into Google Forms in the Indonesian language. The target respondents were 1,267 students from 1,300 undergraduate population size of educational study programs in the field of biology who came from various institutions in Indonesia. Sexual category, grade point average (GPA), and university status to explore the perception of the active student environment of prospective biology teachers with various parameters. The results showed several interesting findings: the female sex is more sensitive to environmental risks, academic abilities play a more logical role in environmental risk analysis, and respondents who have taken environmental courses have a higher sensitivity to environmental risk.

Understanding the variables that promote pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) can be useful for sustainable development. Research has shown that several factors, including emotions, can influence PEBs. Eco-empathy and helplessness beliefs toward the environment (HBTE) can facilitate or discourage PEBs. To understand the role of these factors, it may be interesting to study their connection with different emotion regulation strategies suggested by Self-Determination Theory. The current study sought to test a model that could explain the associations of dysregulation, suppressive regulation, and integrative regulation with eco-empathy, HBTE, and PEBs. In a sample of 305 emerging adults, we found an association between integrative regulation and eco-empathy, dysregulation, and HBTE. The analyses revealed an indirect pathway from integrative regulation to PEBs through eco-empathy, suggesting the need to implement educational and informational programmes that consider the impact of emotional constraints on PEB implementation in the younger generation.

The objective of this study is to introduce eco-literacy in early childhood and to look into the role of digital media in increasing children's awareness of eco-literacy in the era of society 5.0 on daily environmental issues. This study applied a literature review of various sources related to eco-literacy through digital media, especially YouTube as well as interviewing class teachers. The results showed that introducing eco-literacy to elementary school students can be accomplished by telling stories, watching videos, or organizing field trips. There are four important points in developing an eco-literacy attitude: developing empathy, joining the community, making observable things visible, and asking children not to cause environmental damage. In addition to digital activities, efforts to improve ecological literacy should be extended through programs and exchanges regarding the need of environmental protection the 5R (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot) approach. Further studies in the same topic on teaching eco-literacy to elementary school students can be carried out in a more intensive way through relevant games to instill a love of the environment based on 5R strategies.

The purpose of the current study is to reveal the reflections of the Köycegiz Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) field trip planned within the context of the unit "Domestic Waste and Recycling" and the activities carried out concerning this trip on middle school students in Turkey. This research was conducted based on the semi-mixed method using a single-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The quantified data were collected using open-ended questions about domestic waste and recycling, while the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Twenty-seven middle school students (17 females, 10 males) participated in the study selected by convenience sampling method. According to the study's quantitative findings, the field trip to the wastewater treatment plant made the students realize the wastes produced at home, recyclable materials, the importance of recycling, and the contributions of wastewater treatment plants to the country's economy and nature. On the other hand, the quantitative findings indicate that this trip helped the students develop more eco-centric behaviors (Protection of biodiversity, Protection of nature, and Protection of resources, etc.). Moreover, the contributions made by the field trip structured within environmental education to the students could be gathered under the following headings: sustainability, personal, and cognitive.

Effective integration of technology is critical for online, blended, hybrid, and face-to-face learning. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the SETI (Socio-Ecological Technology Integration) framework and explain what it adds to the scholarly research regarding effective technology integration. The SETI framework goes beyond previous frameworks and applies a holistic systems approach to understanding effective technology integration. This takes into account all aspects of technology integration including new findings uncovered during the COVID-19 lockdown. TPACK and SAMR were analyzed identifying their benefits and limitations and then the SETI framework was explained providing insight into the value of a whole systems approach to technology integration.

Pedagogy plays an essential role in the learning process. Ecopedagogy and digital pedagogy are two of its derivatives. This study focuses on the combination of the two pedagogical models, namely Eco-Digital Pedagogy (EDY). It proposes to reveal the effectiveness of the implementation of the EDY model on the readiness of prospective 21st century teachers. This study's population was Geography students at Semarang State University (UNNES) in Indonesia. The data obtained were tested by paired t-test and strengthened by the N-Gain test. The results show that the implementation of the EDY model has proven effective in increasing the ability of prospective teachers, namely in: 1) showing the leadership skills, 2) creating an environment that respects the diversity of students, 3) understanding every content they deliver, 4) facilitating learning to their students, and 5) reflecting on their teaching practices. This positive result indicates that the EDY model can be used to further develop the abilities of prospective teachers to generate better outputs in the learning process.

This paper examines the Confucian concept of learning, or xue ([character omitted]), from the perspective of ecological humanism. Through a comparative interpretation, this paper attempts to disclose the significance of Confucian xue conceived as a practice of aesthetic appreciation and creativity, emphasizing in particular its function within an eco-centric worldview. The author reviews the relevant concepts of ecological humanism as expressed in the ideas of John Dewey and Thomas Alexander, then applies these as a theoretical framework for interpreting xue and its related concepts and practices as they appear in the Confucian text the Lunyu ([characters omitted] ). It is argued that xue is a process of developing and expressing virtuosity and artistry in the "arts of life," and that its practice was understood as a direct participation in the creative development of nature. The significance of such a concept of learning for contemporary educational philosophy is discussed in conclusion.

Augmented Reality (AR) can positively impact learning and provide authentic experiences in the form of simulations by increasing enthusiasm for learning and activities in the classroom. This research aims to develop the design and effectiveness of the Augmented Reality Greenhouse Effect (ARGE) Integration Model Physics Independent Learning (MPIL) and explore the results of the product and their application in physics learning. The ARGE application will be implemented in universities located in the central part of Indonesia ARGE presents a simulation of learning tools to train lecturers and students with the implementation of AR technology, which aims to transfer real learning experiences to understand the concept of the Greenhouse Effect. The research method chosen in the ADDIE method was carried out on 127 students and integrated with MPIL. The number of these students participated in research, where they were divided into three student groups: (i) Semester 3 (N= 42), (ii) Semester 5 (N= 42), and (iii) Semester 7 (N= 43). After 12 weeks of lectures, most students stated a significant positive confirmation of ARGE implantation. These results revealed that the application of ARGE MPIL based on testing the effects of the product by students had excellent practicality in teaching in relevance with a percentage of 92.38%. Then the self-confidence aspect obtained a percentage of 94.29%, and the satisfaction aspect received a percentage of 97.14%. The ARGE design is integrated with MPIL developed to properly simulate the Greenhouse Effect concept. ARGE is effectively categorized as an excellent medium for learning the Greenhouse Effect concept.

Environmental or ecological knowledge means understanding the relationship between living organisms and their environment. The study aimed to analyze the knowledge, attitude, and behavioral components of environmental literacy of prospective teachers for quality education in District Lahore. The objective of this study was to assess the ecological literacy of future teachers in terms of the information, attitudes, and behaviors they possess. The methodology employed in this investigation was a quantitative one. A convenient selection sample of 325 graduate aspiring educators at Lahore's 13 public universities enrolled in teacher education programs was chosen. This investigation made use of two data collection tools. The survey was broken up into two sections. Section A contains fundamental demographic information, while Section B is subdivided into three categories; Environmental Attitudes (EA), Environmental Behaviors (EB), and Environmental Knowledge (EK). This study found that prospective educators have a moderate level of ecological literacy. Male prospective teachers were more literate than their female counterparts, but there was no discernible gender gap in environmental literacy. Future educators do have favorable perspectives and actions toward the environment. No significant gender differences in prospective teachers' attitudes or actions were discovered. It is suggested that colleges and universities that prepare future educators must include environmental studies.

The proliferation of digital software is an increasingly accepted part of everyday life in higher education in the United States. While this software affords some opportunities, it can create confusing experiences for students as well. In this paper, I ask how might increasingly complex digital ecosystems in higher education shape the contours of instructor-student communication. To answer this question, I conducted an exploratory case study in the form of an online survey (n=83) and subsequent interviews (n=18) with user experience (UX) design students at a large public university in the southeastern United States. The research showed that students felt confusion regarding digital software protocols in their classes, how protocols varied from class to class, an inability to remember when and how to communicate with instructors outside of class, unsureness about where to locate information, and a preference for messaging applications over email. Research results suggest that instructor-student communication in higher education can be productively viewed through the lens of information architecture. In doing so, I argue for the need for instructors to implement strong information architecture strategies that help make sense of information in increasingly complex academic ecosystems.

As a "wicked problem," climate change requires interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration in order to prepare future leaders to develop solutions. To this end, as an ecologist and an anthropologist at a mid-sized university in the southeastern U.S., we designed a pair of interdisciplinary, research-intensive courses for first-year Honors students with the goal of improving understanding and communicating the urgency of climate change. We employed High Impact Practices (HIPs) and Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) to accomplish learning outcomes during both years of the course. Gains in scientific knowledge and climate change-specific knowledge were assessed with quantitative and qualitative analysis of pre and post-tests. Analysis suggests that the course improved climate change knowledge and sophistication of interdisciplinary thinking and increased student confidence in understanding of the process of science. This course structure offers an approach to providing a practice space for developing multifaceted solutions to wicked problems.

Global environmental challenges brought on by over-consumption, limited resources, and climate change will task teacher education programs to prepare teacher candidates with new paradigms in problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. Skills such as collaborating across cultures and borders, thinking critically and creatively, reflecting on deeply embedded assumptions, and negotiating uncertainty will all be needed to surmount these challenges. EcoJustice education addresses these needs. When combined with critical place-based pedagogies, skills, and attitudes associated with global citizenship may also develop. Four preservice teachers participated in a research trip to Lesvos, Greece, to learn about and aid in the refugee crisis there. Participants documented their experiences via critical reflections and dialogues and analyzed these data. Findings suggest that through engagement in a critical place-based learning experience, preservice teachers challenged conceptions of their role as Americans and shifted towards a more global, EcoJustice consciousness.

Pre-service science teachers need to be aware of eco-literacy and biotechnology as they will teach science subjects to students from the perspectives of 21st-century skills. This study aimed to develop a web-based module on biotechnology and examine preservice science teachers' eco-literacy skills after using the developed module. The study used a research and development design adopting Molenda's product development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation/ADDIE). There were 60 students majoring in science education as the research participants. The data were collected using a needs analysis questionnaire, a curriculum analysis form, a validation sheet, tests, and a response questionnaire. The obtained quantitative data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 25 with descriptive statistical tests with Swanson's quantifications. Results showed that the web-based module on biotechnology could be developed through ADDIE stages with experts' high validity results (M = 4.59, valid with revision). The module significantly improved the teachers' eco-literacy skills on biotechnology topics (F = 14.053, p = 0.000, N = 60). This result implies that the web-based module on biotechnology can assist preservice science teachers in improving their eco-literacy skills.

Global perspectives instruction often focuses on current news events, neglecting deeper human connections between local and global issues. This paper proposes "ecopedagogy" as a solution. Ecopedagogy is a critical approach that emphasizes the interconnectedness of people and the environment. By integrating ecopedagogy into interdisciplinary units, teachers can engage students in meaningful activities that develop critical thinking, cultural competence, and a sense of responsibility for the planet. Examples of ecopedagogical strategies include collaborative projects addressing local environmental challenges, journal prompts reflecting on personal connections to nature, and outdoor learning experiences. By fostering social-environmental awareness, ecopedagogy empowers students to become stewards of the earth and active agents of change who contribute to a more sustainable future. Exploring environmental issues through a global lens exposes students to diverse cultural perspectives and worldviews. This exposure fosters respect for environmental and social values, laying the foundation for meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration.

In this article, we aim to contribute to the theoretical conceptualisation and praxis of development education and global learning by engaging with recent discussions in the areas of ecocriticism, ecological literacy and posthumanism. Employing a pedagogical approach that is learner-centred and participatory, and that prepares learners to question dominant, globally relevant social norms, development education and global learning empower learners to be active global citizens. In congruence with this approach, we discuss the transformative pedagogical strategies employed in an innovative transdisciplinary course on the climate crisis jointly offered online by two institutions of higher learning in the US and Germany. We explore the philosophical and pedagogical stakes of this process-oriented, inquiry-based and immersive teaching intervention, and its logistical and organisational parameters, educational goals, course content and methodology, as well as some course specifics and impact. Adopting a critical pedagogical approach to climate change as a central global issue, our conceptualisation blends a focus on critical media skills (ecocriticism) with a posthumanist critique of dominant anthropocentric views of the more-than-human world. Centrally linking ontological, cultural and linguistic diversity in both curriculum design and pedagogy, this approach encourages learners to develop the transcultural skills needed to effect positive change on a local and global scale.

The loss of relational networks and life-sustaining capacities of the Earth resulting from the Anthropocene/Capitalocene provoke ambiguous pedagogical experimenting with the limits of the known. The Akokisa River of Texas is more than its extractive use-value based on humanist rationality. Water connector Ángel Faz approaches the River as more than a passive and endless resource to be extracted and manoeuvred for profit, but as an ecology of relations entangled with humans -- the River is us; we are the River. As a boundary agitator, Faz speculates into unresolvable and reciprocal voids located in the excluded middles between humans and more-than-humans ripe with potential percepts and affects across River multiplicities. Such gesturing generates transcorporeal, multi-linguistic, uncanny, trickster, and shimmering pedagogies bewildering the capacity to participate in the dynamic indeterminacy and interconnectedness of the River's ongoing becoming.

Animal behaviour and welfare research are part of a wider endeavour to optimize the health and wellbeing of humans, animals and ecosystems. As such, it is part of the One Health research agenda. This article applies ethical principles described by the One Health High Level Expert Panel to animal behaviour and welfare research. These principles entail that animal behaviour and welfare research should be valued equitably alongside other research in transdisciplinary and multisectoral collaboration. It should include and promote a multiplicity of marginalized voices, including those of animals, and it should apply and describe a harmonious balance between human--animal-environment interactions. Lastly, it should describe how humans need to change behaviour, adopt sustainable solutions and recognize the importance of animal welfare and the integrity of the whole ecosystem.

Within psychology education, there is a growing focus on undergraduate students' psychological literacy; enabling students earlier in their psychological training to directly apply their learning to their lives and in addressing contemporary societal challenges. This growing focus was a key driver for the creation of the course "Connecting and Working with Nature". This course is a fully online, first-year psychology course that explores the human-nature relationship and sought to grow students' knowledge and skills relating to nature connectedness and well-being while simultaneously supporting the development of their psychological literacy. To evaluate the course in relation to fostering students' psychological literacy across personal, professional and community domains, we utilised a range of data sources including surveys, work samples, and focus groups. The findings generated through our mixed methods analyses support that our students did indeed foster their psychological literacy and draw connections between the content and their own lives, across all three domains. Courses that explore the human-nature relationship are well suited to the early development of psychological literacy. This course provided learning experiences that were tangible for all students, while also being a "safer" domain within which to ask students to begin applying their newfound psychological knowledge and skills.

In this study, the role of social emotional learning and microsystem supports on the well-being of adolescents studying at the high school level was examined. It has been assumed that microsystem supports and social emotional learning created within the framework of the ecological approach have an important variance in explaining well-being in adolescents. A total of 1110 high school students, 560 male (50.5%) and 550 female (49.5%) participated in the study (Age[subscript ort] = 15.52, sd = 0.85). A predictive relationship was found between peer relationships, parent engagement, self-regulation, social emotional learning and well-being. In addition to all these results, all these factors significantly explained the variance of well-being. Another important result is that SEL mediates between well being and ecological factors. This is proof that primarily supports social emotional learning is shaped by ecological factors. These findings are discussed in terms of the advantages of social emotional learning and microsystem support in order to increase the well-being of adolescents.

Over the past few years, we have worked together in a citizen science project called "Diamonds on the Soles of our Feet" (see also Goldin et al. 2021, Goldin et al., 2023). In this project we engaged with 420 young learners in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. We came to see participating schools as collaborative ecosystems where young citizens become entangled with water through experiential encounters that make science alive and relevant. Through our engagement with citizen science, we experienced the transformative power of affect and the relevance of emotions in education as a social and political project. In our pedagogy we depart from the idea that human beings are separate from the biosphere, thus recognising the interdependency of all life forms on earth. We believe that keeping science education in laboratories and libraries affirms what Bozalek and Zemblyas (2023) call "privileged irresponsibility". We propose that citizen science and its transformative potential can be one way to redress such irresponsibility. Through impactful encounters with human - nonhuman entanglement and the emotions which are evoked in this process, citizen science can create opportunities for response-ability (Bozalek & Zemblyas, 2023), through teaching and learning with the heart. Such entanglement also resonates with relationality as the currency of care theorists. In the context of our citizen science work, caring for unfamiliar others is a form of non-human-centred care with unfamiliar water bodies in which the binary of inside-outside learning becomes porous as the geographies of water penetrate the classroom walls. In "Diamonds on the Soles of our Feet," we noted how watery spaces and images move back and forth caring-with and through human bodies - waterbodies to school, school to waterbodies. The entanglement with the nonhuman resonates with Massumi's (2015) notion of becoming where there is an unrolling of an event that is a becoming of two together.

Outcomes of meta-analyses are increasingly used to inform evidence-based decision making in various research fields. However, a number of recent studies have reported rapid temporal changes in magnitude and significance of the reported effects which could make policy-relevant recommendations from meta-analyses to quickly go out of date. We assessed the extent and patterns of temporal trends in magnitude and statistical significance of the cumulative effects in meta-analyses in applied ecology and conservation published between 2004 and 2018. Of the 121 meta-analyses analysed, 93% showed a temporal trend in cumulative effect magnitude or significance with 27% of the datasets exhibiting temporal trends in both. The most common trend was the early study effect when at least one of the first 5 years effect size estimates exhibited more than 50% magnitude difference to the subsequent estimate. The observed temporal trends persisted in majority of datasets once moderators were accounted for. Only 5 datasets showed significant changes in sample size over time which could potentially explain the observed temporal change in the cumulative effects. Year of publication of meta-analysis had no significant effect on presence of temporal trends in cumulative effects. Our results show that temporal changes in magnitude and statistical significance in applied ecology are widespread and represent a serious potential threat to use of meta-analyses for decision-making in conservation and environmental management. We recommend use of cumulative meta-analyses and call for more studies exploring the causes of the temporal effects.

Addressing human-made environmental problems such as deforestation is an ongoing educational challenge. Promising educational approaches include cooperative decision-making and attempt via a high level of motivation to promote pro-environmental behaviors. Knowledge about the forest ecosystem, including its threats, is supposed to strengthen responsibilities and individual behavioral preferences. The "Save the Forests!" module engages students in hands-on learning activities under the frame of an educational Escape Game (Edu Breakout). Based on nine workstations, it includes various cooperative activities focusing on the forest ecosystem, its ecosystem services, and common tree species. Students realize advantages of recycling, gain insight into paper production and associated resource consumption, compare eco-labels for sustainable paper products, and reflect on consumer decisions. Additionally, the students learn about habitat situations after clear-cutting, forest fires, or storm damages (succession), including strategies for dealing with deadwood based on scientific data. Besides experiments and challenging tasks, students learn about the ecological footprint and greenwashing by clarifying often-used terms in sustainability contexts. In an accompanied quantitative study approach, students participating in the learning module significantly increased their knowledge scores in a pre-post comparison (n = 135, p < 0.001, d = 0.58).

Central to the institutionalization of learning analytics is the need to understand and improve student learning. Frameworks guiding the implementation of learning analytics flow from and perpetuate specific understandings of learning. Crucially, they also provide insights into how learning analytics acknowledges and positions itself as entangled in institutional data ecosystems, and (increasingly) as part of a data ecology driven by a variety of data interests. The success of learning analytics should therefore be understood in terms of data flows and data interests informing the emerging and mutually constitutive interrelationships and interdependencies between different stakeholders, interests and power relations. This article analyses several selected frameworks to determine the extent to which learning analytics understands itself as a "data ecosystem" with dynamic interdependencies and interrelationships (human and non-human). Secondly, as learning analytics increasingly becomes part of broader "data ecologies," we examine the extent to which learning analytics takes cognizance of the reality, the potential and the risks of being part of a broader data ecology. Finally, this article examines the "different data interests" vested in learning analytics and critically considers implications for student data sovereignty. The research found that most of the analyzed frameworks understand learning analytics as a data ecosystem, with very little evidence of a broader data ecological understanding. The vast majority of analyzed frameworks consider student data as valuable resource without considering student data ownership and their data rights for self-determination.

Educational travel, and in particular study abroad programs, are generally beneficial to students, but less is known about impacts on the communities in which they are located. This study explores such impacts for a small rural community in Costa Rica that has hosted dozens of ecotourism and study abroad programs. Sixteen interviews were conducted in the community to explore the social and cultural rewards and costs of these programs, including cultural changes such as increases in community members speaking English, availability of drugs and alcohol, appreciation of nature, and adoption of sustainable living practices. We analyze these impacts by examining common programmatic assumptions about study abroad and borrowing biological constructs of symbiosis to diagram the potential trade-offs and costs for the local community -- as the basis for developing more mutualistic, decolonized programs in the future.

Scientific research is supposed to acquire or generate knowledge, but such a purpose would be severely undermined by instances of research misconduct (RM) and questionable research practices (QRP). RM and QRP are often framed in terms of moral transgressions by individuals (bad apples) whose aberrant acts could be made conducive by shortcomings in regulatory measures of organizations or institutions (bad barrels). This notion presupposes, to an extent, that the erring parties know exactly what they are doing is wrong and morally culpable, but had nonetheless proceeded to commit wrongful acts. However, a confession of intent to deceived is often not readily admitted by perpetrators of RM. I posit that beyond the simplistic notion of conscious moral transgression, deficits in epistemic virtues and/or the prevalence of epistemic vices have important roles to play in initiating and driving RM/QRP. For the individual perpetrator, deficits in epistemic virtues could lead to or amplify errors in one's desperate attempt to be accomplished or to excel, and pushes one across the ethical line or down the slippery slope of misconduct. Likewise, a lack of epistemic virtue within perpetrators' institution or organization could make it conducive for deceitful acts and suppress indications and warning signs for the former. Furthermore, epistemic vices exhibited by reviewers, editors and journals could also promote RM/QRP. In this view, epistemic failings, rather than widespread moral deficiencies of individuals within the research ecosystem, may underlie the prevalence of RM/QRP.

This paper illustrates how years 1 and 2 students were guided to engage in data modelling and statistical reasoning through interdisciplinary mathematics and science investigations drawn from an Australian 3-year longitudinal study: "Interdisciplinary Mathematics and Science Learning" (https://imslearning.org/). The project developed learning sequences for 12 inquiry-based investigations involving 35 teachers and cohorts of between 25 and 70 students across years 1 through 6. The research used a design-based methodology to develop, implement, and refine a 4-stage pedagogical cycle based on students' problem posing, data generation, organisation, interpretation, and reasoning about data. Across the stages of the IMS cycle, students generated increasingly sophisticated representations of data and made decisions about whether these supported their explanations, claims about, and solutions to scientific problems. The teacher's role in supporting students' statistical reasoning was analysed across two learning sequences: "Ecology" in year 1 and "Paper Helicopters" in year 2 involving the same cohort of students. An explicit focus on data modelling and meta-representational practices enabled the year 1 students to form statistical ideas, such as distribution, sampling, and aggregation, and to construct a range of data representations. In year 2, students engaged in tasks that focused on ordering and aggregating data, measures of central tendency, inferential reasoning, and, in some cases, informal ideas of variability. The study explores how a representation-focused interdisciplinary pedagogy can support the development of data modelling and statistical thinking from an early age.

Background: Over the past several decades, understandings of civic knowledge and engagement have been enlarged in productive ways; the field has been transformed by contributions rooted in and showcasing critical, cultural, transnational, activist, and participatory approaches to the civic. Civic action research fits neatly amid these new articulations of the civic; multiple studies attest to its potential for creating civic learning experiences that build on young people's strengths and provide space for critical analysis and informed action. In this social design project, civic action research investigations conducted by youth in communities impacted by structural inequality catalyzed densely interwoven, affectively infused networks of cross-district interaction and action: critical ecologies of civic learning. Focus of Study: This article retheorizes civic learning in light of findings from a research initiative rooted in the question: "How might civic inquiry be used to create school district practices that nurture and integrate the civic voice of youth?" Research Design: In this 18-month-long social design collaboration between a university-based research team and two public school districts in the northeastern United States, youth in five participating schools--two high schools and three middle schools--carried out civic inquiry projects under the guidance of experienced social studies teachers. In these projects, young people examined their communities, selected issues to investigate, designed and carried out research, analyzed data, communicated findings, and took action. Data collected by the adult researchers included observations of club sessions, focus groups with students, interviews with adult stakeholders, and observations of "civic voice events" involving both youth and adults. Interdisciplinary, iterative reading and thematic coding led to the development of the conceptual framework that is the focus of this article. Conclusions or Recommendations: This article illustrates and theorizes "critical ecosystems of civic learning." In this project, civic learning was collectively produced rather than vertically transmitted--a joint activity of youth and adults. A historically and structurally situated phenomenon, civic learning was not separable from the resources, assets, and experiences that young people brought with them as civic actors. Civic learning was not bound by the container of the classroom--it moved and flowed across settings, accruing through the interactions of people inhabiting varied perspectives. Finally, civic learning was affective and relational, engaging emotion and fostering connection. Building upon and extending critical and participatory reframings, a critical ecosystems theorization of civic learning can help us to envision deeper, more expansive forms of civic education that support, activate, and empower young people from across a broad spectrum of communities, propelling us toward a more just and inclusive civic future.

This paper addresses the question of why young Australians with intellectual disability (ID) remain underrepresented in open employment despite significant investment by various stakeholders. It uses the analogy of Whack-a-Mole (an arcade game) to draw attention to the complexity young people face during transition, and to illustrate how addressing one barrier in isolation is unlikely to result in successful transitions. In response to repeated calls for more holistic understandings of the transition process for young adults with ID, the paper draws upon the work of Urie Bronfenbrenner to present an adaptation of his model to map the ecologies of young people with ID's as they seek to transition from school to open employment. The model illustrates the complexity of transition, a proliferation of stakeholders, and traces how transition is contingent on much more than young adults with ID's capabilities. It invites further consideration of, and utility for, an ecological model as a basis for imagining possibilities to increase the number of people with ID in open employment and concludes by raising some questions that stakeholders might ask.

The current study aims to understand the expectations of pre-service preschool teachers regarding what kind of environment we will live in in the future and the reasons behind these expectations in terms of sustainable development (SD). To this end, the current study was conducted based on a phenomenological model with the participation of 77 pre-service preschool teachers. The participating pre-service teachers were first asked to draw the future environment they expect to see. Subsequently, they were interviewed and asked to explain their drawings and why they hope to see that environment in the future. According to the study, most pre-service teachers have negative expectations about the future environment. On the other hand, there are a few positive and technology-oriented expectations. Furthermore, a significant portion of the participants explained the environmental dimension of SD. On the other hand, a small number of participants preferred to explain different pillars together by creating cause-and-effect relationships. Given the obtained findings, it is suggested that environmental education should be more widespread at every level of schooling. The political, economic, and social pillars of SD should be more extensively incorporated into the existing curriculums.

The decline of biodiversity and natural habitats, and the lack of progress in society's behaviour towards conservation, has prompted research into effective educational programs. Studies have shown that positive emotions towards nature, particularly in relation to the innate human predisposition towards the natural environment, can encourage environmentally friendly actions. As people's attitudes towards species are linked to familiarity and experiences, insects, and other invertebrates, despite their vital role in ecosystems, are often underappreciated and face inequalities in research and conservation. Negative attitudes towards insects are shaped by cultural and educational factors. Hence, education, particularly environmental education, can play a significant role in changing preconceptions and attitudes towards insects and fostering positive behaviour towards biodiversity conservation. This study presents a scoping review of environmental education programs focused on enhancing students' awareness of insects and their significance in the ecosystem (from 2000 to 2022). The aim was to analyse the effects of intervention programs and key characteristics that contributed to their efficiency. The review highlights the importance of program duration, outdoor experiences, and the use of inquiry-based and experiential learning methods in promoting positive attitudes and knowledge about insects. The findings have implications for the design and implementation of effective environmental education programs targeting insect awareness.

Art is a common approach for communicating and educating about science, yet it remains unclear the extent to which science art can benefit varied audiences in varied contexts. To examine this gap, we developed an art exhibit based on the findings of two publications in disease ecology. In study 1, we asked visitors with varying formal science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education backgrounds to complete a survey about their interest in science research before and after viewing the exhibit. In study 2, we recruited upper-level ecology undergraduate students to receive one of three treatments: engage with the art exhibit, read the abstracts of the papers, or do neither. Students completed a comprehension quiz immediately after their learning treatment and again 2 weeks later to evaluate retention. Following the exhibit, visitors who did not report a career or major in STEM showed a greater increase in research interest than visitors who did report a career or major in STEM. For the ecology undergraduate students, comprehension quiz scores were higher for students in the abstract group than the art exhibit group, while both groups scored higher than the control group. Retention of information did not significantly differ between the three groups. Overall, these findings suggest that science art exhibits are an effective method for increasing the accessibility of science to broader audiences and that audience identifiers (e.g., level of formal education in STEM) play an important role in audience experience of science communication and science education initiatives.

Continuous professional development is critical for Extension staff, and many agriculture-focused Extension employees are tasked with outreach related to a wide variety of natural resource topics. The purpose of this study is to help prioritize trainings needed by Kansas Extension agents and specialists based on their current level of knowledge and interest in staying up to date on 18 different natural resource topics. Responses to a statewide survey were analyzed using the Borich model. Results indicate priority professional development needs related to soil health; effects of climate; invasive species, harmful algal blooms; and groundwater, surface water, and air quality.

Ecological literacy (Eco literacy) along with creative thinking skills can be utilised to overcome environmental problems to achieve environmental sustainability. This research analyses the correlation between ecological literacy and students' creative thinking skills of environmental problems. The research method is quantitative with a correlational study. The research respondents include 281 pupils of Grade 11 MIPA (Science) from three areas in Indonesia: Jakarta, Sumatera, and Gorontalo. Data collection consists of a write test and an opinion-seeking questionnaire. Ecological literacy analysis consists of caring, practical competence, and knowledge dimensions. Creative thinking skills are analysed through fluency, originality, flexibility, and elaboration dimensions. The results indicate that ecological literacy and creative thinking skills levels in grade 11 MIPA in a medium category. Female students have a higher average score in ecological literacy and creative thinking skills than in male students. The research finds a positive relationship between ecological literacy and creative thinking skills.

Most countries in the world have experienced environmental disasters. To ameliorate environmental disasters everyone must take part, including those in schools and universities. The aim of the study was to instil and develop ecofeminism awareness by means of ecofeminist pedagogy in the literature class. The study involved students and lecturers of the three universities in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, Indonesia. The study was conducted in two semesters (February -- May and September -- November 2018). The findings show that the ecofeminist pedagogical model of learning was able to cultivate and elevate students' ecofeminism awareness as indicated by their willingness to be involved in taking care of and preserving the environment in their daily life activities, individually or in groups. This attitude was evident in the lecturers' and students' knowledge and skills in reading, selecting, and interpreting literary works that raise ecofeminism issues as source texts revealed in the essays that were written and compiled in book form. Publication of this book was one of the efforts to disseminate the ideas and knowledge of ecofeminism. Finally, after attending the ecofeminist pedagogical classes, students were also expected to take part in and be responsible for the preservation of the environment and Earth and appreciate gender equality. These findings can be used as a model for learning other subjects, especially at universities that have a green campus vision.

Initial teacher education should mould well-rounded teachers proficient in scientific investigations, and advocate sustainability amid global ecosystems' degradation. The research sought to explore pre-service science teachers' views concerning scientific investigations and sustainable development goals, and synergy between skills and different aspects of scientific inquiry within the context of the mangroves ecosystem studied. A four-part questionnaire was administered to 82 students registered for a Bachelor of Education degree. It included items on teachers' confidence in planning and conducting scientific investigations, types of scientific investigations, sustainable development goals, science process skills and the different aspects of scientific inquiry. Statistical analysis of the data showed the importance of a constructivist approach, learner engagement and discerning and controlling variables when investigating scientific phenomena. However, only a fair number of teachers could correctly provide the scientific investigation they conducted during the mangroves study, the sustainable development goals embedded in it, and the synergy between science process skills and the aspects of scientific inquiry. The findings have implications for teacher education in terms of potential challenges in teachers' understanding of scientific investigations, the synergy between them and sustainability, and science process skills that meld with the aspects of scientific inquiry.

Providing safe access to functional field experiences during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic was a distinct challenge. However, these experiences are critical to train students in ecological methods and provide an opportunity for open-ended, authentic research. Here, we report on a multiweek lab designed for an introductory ecology course, which was adapted for hybrid instruction during the pandemic. In the lab sequence, students independently surveyed basic phenological, population, and community dynamics of easily identifiable, cosmopolitan plant species in the genus "Plantago." Students used this crowd-sourced dataset to develop, analyze, and report on unique research questions regarding interactions between "Plantago" and the local environment. The new lab sequence effectively met course learning objectives in experimental design, field methods, statistics, and science communication, while being accessible to both in-person and online learners. We conclude by discussing the evolution of this design for other audiences.

The aim of this study is to determine the environmental behaviour and the approaches to environmental ethics of teacher candidates whether or not they differ in terms of gender, department and place of residence. Moreover, the relationship between the approaches to environmental ethics of teacher candidates and their environmental behaviours was established and interpreted in the study. The research group of the study, in which screening model is used, consists of 881 third year and final year student teachers from the departments of science teaching, primary school teaching and social sciences teaching in five state universities. Out of the teacher candidates, 650 are female and 231 are male students. The data were obtained with Environmental Behaviour Scale and the Approaches to Environmental Ethics Scale. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney-U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and Spearman Rank-Difference Coefficient of Correlation methods were used for the analysis of the data which determined that there was a low level of relationship between the environmental behaviours and the approaches to environmental ethics of the teacher candidates and that the approaches to environmental ethics and the environmental behaviours differed for some of the variables including gender, department and place of residence.

In the face of the present ecological crisis, improving environmental attitudes is crucial to encourage a cultural transformation that can rebalance the equilibrium between human activities and the planet. The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale was used to measure the environmental attitudes of students at the University of Madeira, Portugal, and to unveil the challenges that need to be addressed at the local and global level through an environmental education effort. This article presents two dimensions of the NEP scale: the high levels of the ecocentric world view and the rejection of anthropocentrism. It also points out some inconsistencies in the NEP scale. For example, the belief in human ingenuity to properly manage natural resources and keep the planet habitable should be seen as supporting our ability to move towards sustainability, and not the opposite. However, the lack of concern about human population growth requires this to be brought to the centre of the environmental education effort.

Biology education is crucial for living in a volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, disruptive, and diverse environment. Moreover, most literature suggested developing learning activities for students based on the knowledge, attitudes, and skills competency gaps. Thus, this study assessed the academic performance in terms of their examination scores among the 150 randomly selected Grade Eight Biology students in different public schools in a rural municipality in Cebu, Philippines. It employed a descriptive research methodology. The test questionnaire was anchored on the Department of Education Learning Guide in determining the student's academic performance in Biology. The respondents' data were gathered from their Biology teachers and were expressed in frequencies and percentages. Data were computed using SPSS Statistics 27. The majority of the student's academic performance in Biology for Digestive System (n=65, 43.33%), Biodiversity (n=68, 45.33%), and Ecosystem (n=56, 37.34%) competencies indicate that the majority of the respondents' scores did not meet expectations. Our findings strongly recommend that teachers carefully plan and provide necessary learning activities based on the needs and knowledge gaps of the students in their instructional practices to give their students a thorough grasp of the topics covered in the Biology class.

Environmental problems are a concern of society. Solving environmental problems requires knowledge of ecological concepts, environmental awareness, and students' ecological behavior. The research aims to determine the relationship between ecological concept knowledge and environmental concern with students' ecological behavior. The research method uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional survey technique on 180 participants at SMA Negeri 1 Sungailiat, Bangka Regency. Statistical data analysis using regression analysis and multiple correlation. Based on the prerequisite test, it was obtained that the data were normally distributed, the data was homogeneous, there were no symptoms of multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, or autocorrelation. The results showed a multiple correlation coefficient of r = 0.776 in the strong category. The conclusion of the study is that there is a positive relationship between knowledge of ecological concepts and environmental awareness together with ecological behavior. Achievement of high student ecological behavior requires knowledge of ecological concepts and concern for the good environment of students.

After the implementation of "double reduction" policy, parental education anxiety becomes a hit subject in the society. Aimed to figure out formation logic and countermeasures of it, this paper adopts literature survey method, through numerous researches, discovers that on the one hand, the policy has comprehensively standardized cram schooling market, optimized the homework design and relieved students' burden, which renders the overall educational ecology sustainable. But on the other hand, affected by multiple factors, such as the weakening function of family education, the imbalance between the supply and demand of educational resources, single selection criterion and unpredictable educational deviation, parents' educational anxiety keeps swelling, bearing several features like the heterogeneity of anxiety, classification of anxious crowds, different stages of anxiety and intergenerational mobility. Therefore, only by synchronous implementation of multiple measures, reconstructing education ecological system, standardizing the policy and continuing to strengthen faculty force, can we relieve parental education anxiety and give a push to the genuine implementation of "double reduction" policy.

Climate change and global warming have huge impacts on the most fragile ecosystems on Earth. With temperatures rising, most of the tropical glaciers on Earth, found near the Equator, will be gone before the end of the century. These far-removed natural areas are obscure and difficult for students to visit or learn from directly. Educating students in non-traditional, more experience-based settings is crucial for them to better understand current issues the world is facing, like glacial shrinkage, loss of sea ice, and accelerated sea level rise. This study found that virtual reality 360-degree video technology (VR-360), by providing close to real-life experiences and engaging storytelling, has the ability to engage students and provide them with meaningful information and experiences about climate change. In Phase 1 of this study, 65 students reported that VR can be beneficial for educational purposes to learn about global climate change. In Phase 2, with 227 students from around the globe, path analysis supported the need for VR-360 video producers to consider the importance of spatial presence, in the form of possible action and self-location, as critical elements of their videos to encourage people to use VR technology to learn about extreme environments and climate change.

The objectives of this study were to 1) investigate the efficiency of Application on Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' for creating awareness of Undergraduate Students, 2) compare students' achievements before and after learning through the Application on Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' for Creates Awareness of Undergraduate Students, and 3) examine student satisfaction towards the Application on Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' for Creates Awareness of Undergraduate Students. The sample comprised 30 Secondary 4 second semester at Faculty of Technical Education, Rajamangala University Thayaburi Education Service Area Office Pathum Thani, derived through purposive sampling technique. Data was collected through an application called Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' to create awareness among undergraduate students. The research used a pretest, a post-test, and a student satisfaction form. The data was analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test for dependent samples. The findings showed that the Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' application was adequate, with an E1/E2 score of 81.58/80.03. The study also revealed that students achieved better results after using the application to learn about creating awareness among undergraduate students. The mean and standard deviation before learning were 8.27 and 2.22, while the mean and standard deviation after education were 4.66 and 0.61. The t-test score used before and after schooling was 31.16 at a statistically significant level of 0.05. Moreover, the student satisfaction towards the Application of Nymphaea 'Thai Lotus Species' for Creates Awareness of Undergraduate Students was high.

Considering both the ecological niches of fungi and the different benefits they provide to humans, it is expected that students have a high level of scientific knowledge about living things in this kingdom. In the study, it was aimed to examine the learning of secondary school students about living things in the fungi kingdom. The research, which was carried out as a case study, was carried out with 52 secondary school students studying in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye in the 2022-2023 academic years. In the research, it was determined that the students had misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the classification of living things in the fungi kingdom, their diet, ecological functions and their effects on human life. The students stated that fungi take place in the world of plants, feed by photosynthesis and are used in making yogurt. According to these results, it is recommended to conduct studies on textbooks, teaching methods and teachers that cause students' misconceptions about living things in the fungi kingdom.

Exploring students' systems thinking (ST) is essential in enhancing science learning, but existing studies have failed to understand students' ST fully as it relates to ecological issues. This study aimed to fill the aforementioned literature gap by exploring lower-secondary school students' ST regarding ecological issues. The Systems Thinking Test regarding Ecological Issues, which measures four ST skills (system organisation, behaviour, application, and evaluation), was administered to 1,092 lower-secondary school students. The results reveal low ST performance in ecological issues, with students finding it particularly difficult to identify interactions among components and understand system characteristics. Furthermore, most lacked reflective consciousness and consideration of the diverse dimensions of ecological issues, resulting in monocausal reasoning in system decision-making and evaluation. Comparatively, urban school students performed better than their rural counterparts; additionally, an item-level analysis revealed that climate warming was challenging for the students to understand. This study suggests that greater efforts should be made to address students' drawbacks and that multi-perspectival teaching is necessary in the context of ecological issues. The addition of system decision-making and evaluation in assessments can enable a broader understanding of ST.

The incorporation of interdisciplinary education, a topic of significant global interest, is increasingly being recognized as a key aspect of educational innovation in Vietnam. This recognition extends to several fields, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. This research aims to design and implement a STEM situation associated with the context of water protection in Vietnam for 10th-grade students in which students mobilize the knowledge of Physics (specific gravity, Archimedes' principle) and Mathematics (volume) to design a salinometer. This device measures the salinity of the water. The research methodology is based on the observed increase in saline levels in the coastal regions of Vietnam in recent years, which has had a substantial impact on agriculture and the livelihoods of millions of people. This methodology aims to provide realistic scenarios for students to address and resolve these problems. A total of forty students in the 10th grade were involved in a teaching situation that consisted of five distinct phases. Forty 10th-grade students participated in a teaching situation conducted in five phases. The results showed that the situation helped students strengthen and connect their physics and mathematics knowledge, create a vibrant learning atmosphere, enhance communication, and develop problem-solving competency. Furthermore, the teaching situation also needs to be revised regarding the measurement practices of Vietnamese students. The situation contributes to educating students' awareness of current events, protecting Vietnamese water resources, and the importance of sustainable development. In addition, we can use the same teaching process as in this research to develop other STEM teaching situations.

"Troso" woven fabric is a kind of weaving fabric produced in a village in Indonesia called "Troso." The aim of this study was to identify the detailed process of manufacture of "Troso" woven fabric and reconstruct it related to several scientific concepts. Research method started by observe several local cultures in this city, and found that students can better understand the science concept and increase their environmental awareness when it is exemplified by circumstances in their surrounding environment. The results of Troso woven fabric reconstruction can be used as a contextual alternative learning resource and increase students' awareness in protecting their environment. This study uses a qualitative research approach through ethnoscience and ethnoecology. The two aspects of the study were carried out through the process of reconstructing indigenous science into scientific science. The research stages include pre-research preparation, primary data collection through observation, in-depth interviews, discussion, and direct observations. The next step was collecting data from the study of cultural documents on the manufacturing of Troso woven fabric as well as verifying, reconstructing, formulating, and conceptualising into science. Various scientific studies relate to the measurement process, compounds and mixtures, heat, and energy transfer associated with ethnoscience. Ethnoecologically, the community does not know yet about the environmental impact that has occurred, resulting in environmental damage even though the community has not directly observed it. By associating science material with the local culture, it is hoped that the understanding of science will become more meaningful and contextual.
