1. TOI-1408: Discovery and Photodynamical Modeling of a Small Inner Companion to a Hot Jupiter Revealed by Transit Timing Variations

Abstract: We report the discovery and characterization of a small planet, TOI-1408 c, on a 2.2 day orbit located interior to a previously known hot Jupiter, TOI-1408 b ( P = 4.42 days, M = 1.86 ± 0.02 M _Jup , R = 2.4 ± 0.5 R _Jup ) that exhibits grazing transits. The two planets are near 2:1 period commensurability, resulting in significant transit timing variations (TTVs) for both planets and transit duration variations for the inner planet. The TTV amplitude for TOI-1408 c is 15% of the planet’s orbital period, marking the largest TTV amplitude relative to the orbital period measured to date. Photodynamical modeling of ground-based radial velocity (RV) observations and transit light curves obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and ground-based facilities leads to an inner planet radius of 2.22 ± 0.06 R _⊕ and mass of 7.6 ± 0.2 M _⊕ that locates the planet into the sub-Neptune regime. The proximity to the 2:1 period commensurability leads to the libration of the resonant argument of the inner planet. The RV measurements support the existence of a third body with an orbital period of several thousand days. This discovery places the system among the rare systems featuring a hot Jupiter accompanied by an inner low-mass planet.

Abstract: With high equilibrium temperatures and tidally locked rotation, ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) are unique laboratories within which to probe extreme atmospheric physics and chemistry. In this paper, we present high-resolution dayside spectroscopy of the UHJ WASP-189 b obtained with the new Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) at the Gemini South Observatory. The observations, which cover 3 hr of post-eclipse orbital phases, were obtained during the instrument’s System Verification run. We detect the planet’s atmosphere via the Doppler cross-correlation technique, and recover a detection of neutral iron in the planet’s dayside atmosphere at a significance of 7.5 σ in the red arm of the data, verifying the presence of a thermal inversion. We also investigate the presence of other species in the atmosphere and discuss the implications of model injection/recovery tests. These results represent the first atmospheric characterization of an exoplanet with GHOST’s high-resolution mode, and demonstrate the potential of this new instrument in detecting and studying ultra-hot exoplanet atmospheres.

Abstract: We report on the discovery and validation of a transiting long-period mini-Neptune orbiting a bright ( V = 9.0 mag) G dwarf (TOI 4633; R = 1.05 R _⊙ , M = 1.10 M _⊙ ). The planet was identified in data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite by citizen scientists taking part in the Planet Hunters TESS project. Modelling of the transit events yields an orbital period of 271.9445 ± 0.0040 days and radius of 3.2 ± 0.20 R _⊕ . The Earth-like orbital period and an incident flux of ${1.56}_{-0.16}^{+0.20}$ F _⊕ places it in the optimistic habitable zone around the star. Doppler spectroscopy of the system allowed us to place an upper mass limit on the transiting planet and revealed a non-transiting planet candidate in the system with a period of 34.15 ± 0.15 days. Furthermore, the combination of archival data dating back to 1905 with new high angular resolution imaging revealed a stellar companion orbiting the primary star with an orbital period of around 230 yr and an eccentricity of about 0.9. The long period of the transiting planet, combined with the high eccentricity and close approach of the companion star makes this a valuable system for testing the formation and stability of planets in binary systems.

Abstract: Determination of fundamental parameters of stars impacts all fields of astrophysics, from galaxy evolution to constraining the internal structure of exoplanets. This paper presents a detailed spectroscopic analysis of Barnard’s star (otherwise known as Gl 699) that compares an exceptionally high-quality (an average signal-to-noise ratio of ∼1000 in the entire domain), high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectrum taken with Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/SPIRou to PHOENIX-ACES stellar atmosphere models. The observed spectrum shows thousands of lines not identified in the models with a similarly large number of lines present in the model but not in the observed data. We also identify several other caveats, such as continuum mismatch, unresolved contamination, and spectral lines significantly shifted from their expected wavelengths; all of these can be a source of bias for the determination of abundance. Out of >10 ^4 observed lines in the NIR that could be used for chemical spectroscopy, we identify a short list of a few hundred lines that are reliable. We present a novel method for determining the effective temperature ( T _eff ) and overall metallicity of slowly rotating M dwarfs that uses several groups of lines as opposed to bulk spectral fitting methods. With this method, we infer T _eff = 3231 ± 21 K for Barnard's star, consistent with the value of 3238 ± 11 K inferred from the interferometric method. We also provide measurements of the abundance of 15 different elements for Barnard's star, including the abundances of four elements (K, O, Y, Th) never reported before for this star. This work emphasizes the need to improve current atmosphere models to fully exploit the NIR domain for chemical spectroscopy analysis.

5. Exocomets size distribution in the $$\beta$$ β Pictoris planetary system

Abstract: Abstract The star $$\beta$$ β Pictoris harbors a young planetary system of about 20 million years old, which is characterized by the presence of a gaseous and dusty debris disk, at least two massive planets and many minor bodies. For more than thirty years, exocomets transiting the star have been detected using spectroscopy, probing the gaseous part of the cometary comas and tails. The detection of the dusty component of the tails can be performed through photometric observations of the transits. Since 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite has observed $$\beta$$ β Pic for a total of 156 days. Here we report an analysis of the TESS photometric data set with the identification of a total of 30 transits of exocomets. Our statistical analysis shows that the number of transiting exocomet events (N) as a function of the absorption depth (AD) in the light curve follows a power law in the form $$dN(AD) \propto AD^{-\alpha }$$ d N ( A D ) ∝ A D - α , where $$\alpha =2.3\pm 0.4$$ α = 2.3 ± 0.4 . This distribution of absorption depth leads to a differential comet size distribution proportional to $$R^{-\gamma }$$ R - γ , where $$\gamma =3.6 \pm 0.8$$ γ = 3.6 ± 0.8 , showing a striking similarity to the size distribution of comets in the Solar system and the distribution of a collisionally relaxed population ( $$\gamma _{{\text{D}}}= 3.5$$ γ D = 3.5 ).

Abstract: We report on a chemo-dynamical analysis of SPLUS J142445.34−254247.1 (SPLUS J1424−2542), an extremely metal-poor halo star enhanced in elements formed by the rapid neutron-capture process ( r -process). This star was first selected as a metal-poor candidate from its narrowband S-PLUS photometry and followed up spectroscopically in medium resolution with Gemini-South/GMOS, which confirmed its low-metallicity status. High-resolution spectroscopy was gathered with GHOST at Gemini-South, allowing for the determination of the chemical abundances for 36 elements, from carbon to thorium. At [Fe/H] = −3.39, SPLUS J1424−2542 is one of the lowest-metallicity stars with measured Th and has the highest $\mathrm{log}\epsilon (\mathrm{Th}/\mathrm{Eu})$ observed to date, making it part of the “actinide-boost” category of r -process–enhanced stars. The analysis presented here suggests that the gas cloud from which SPLUS J1424−2542 formed must have been enriched by at least two progenitor populations. The light-element ( Z ≤ 30) abundance pattern is consistent with the yields from a supernova explosion of metal-free stars with 11.3–13.4 M _⊙ , and the heavy-element ( Z ≥ 38) abundance pattern can be reproduced by the yields from a neutron star merger (1.66 M _⊙ and 1.27 M _⊙ ) event. A kinematical analysis also reveals that SPLUS J1424−2542 is a low-mass, old halo star with a likely in situ origin, not associated with any known early merger events in the Milky Way.

Abstract: Large-scale exoplanet surveys like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission are powerful tools for discovering large numbers of exoplanet candidates. Single-transit events are commonplace within the resulting candidate list due to the unavoidable limitation of the observing baseline. These single-transit planets often remain unverified due to their unknown orbital periods and consequent difficulty in scheduling follow-up observations. In some cases, radial velocity (RV) follow up can constrain the period enough to enable a future targeted transit detection. We present the confirmation of one such planet: TOI-2010 b. Nearly three years of RV coverage determined the period to a level where a broad window search could be undertaken with the Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite, detecting an additional transit. An additional detection in a much later TESS sector solidified our final parameter estimation. We find TOI-2010 b to be a Jovian planet ( M _P = 1.29 M _Jup , R _P = 1.05 R _Jup ) on a mildly eccentric orbit ( e = 0.21) with a period of P = 141.83403 days. Assuming a simple model with no albedo and perfect heat redistribution, the equilibrium temperature ranges from about 360 to 450 K from apastron to periastron. Its wide orbit and bright host star ( V = 9.85) make TOI-2010 b a valuable test bed for future low-insolation atmospheric analysis.

Abstract: AU Mic is a young (22 Myr), nearby exoplanetary system that exhibits excess transit timing variations (TTVs) that cannot be accounted for by the two known transiting planets nor stellar activity. We present the statistical “validation” of the tentative planet AU Mic d (even though there are examples of “confirmed” planets with ambiguous orbital periods). We add 18 new transits and nine midpoint times in an updated TTV analysis to prior work. We perform the joint modeling of transit light curves using EXOFASTv2 and extract the transit midpoint times. Next, we construct an O − C diagram and use Exo-Striker to model the TTVs. We generate TTV log-likelihood periodograms to explore possible solutions for d’s period, then follow those up with detailed TTV and radial velocity Markov Chain Monte Carlo modeling and stability tests. We find several candidate periods for AU Mic d, all of which are near resonances with AU Mic b and c of varying order. Based on our model comparisons, the most-favored orbital period of AU Mic d is 12.73596 ± 0.00793 days ( T _C _,d = 2458340.55781 ± 0.11641 BJD), which puts the three planets near 4:6:9 mean-motion resonance. The mass for d is 1.053 ± 0.511 M _⊕ , making this planet Earth-like in mass. If confirmed, AU Mic d would be the first known Earth-mass planet orbiting a young star and would provide a valuable opportunity in probing a young terrestrial planet’s atmosphere. Additional TTV observations of the AU Mic system are needed to further constrain the planetary masses, search for possible transits of AU Mic d, and detect possible additional planets beyond AU Mic c.

Abstract: We explore the transit timing variations (TTVs) of the young (22 Myr) nearby AU Mic planetary system. For AU Mic b, we introduce three Spitzer (4.5 μm) transits, five TESS transits, 11 LCO transits, one PEST transit, one Brierfield transit, and two transit timing measurements from Rossiter–McLaughlin observations; for AU Mic c, we introduce three TESS transits. We present two independent TTV analyses. First, we use EXOFASTv2 to jointly model the Spitzer and ground-based transits and obtain the midpoint transit times. We then construct an O − C diagram and model the TTVs with Exo-Striker. Second, we reproduce our results with an independent photodynamical analysis. We recover a TTV mass for AU Mic c of -10.8+2.22.3 M⊕. We compare the TTV-derived constraints to a recent radial velocity (RV) mass determination. We also observe excess TTVs that do not appear to be consistent with the dynamical interactions of b and c alone or due to spots or flares. Thus, we present a hypothetical nontransiting “middle-d” candidate exoplanet that is consistent with the observed TTVs and candidate RV signal and would establish the AU Mic system as a compact resonant multiplanet chain in a 4:6:9 period commensurability. These results demonstrate that the AU Mic planetary system is dynamically interacting, producing detectable TTVs, and the implied orbital dynamics may inform the formation mechanisms for this young system. We recommend future RV and TTV observations of AU Mic b and c to further constrain the masses and confirm the existence of possible additional planet(s).

Abstract: Precise measurements of chemical abundances in planetary atmospheres are necessary to constrain the formation histories of exoplanets. A recent study of WASP-127b, a close-in puffy sub-Saturn orbiting its solar-type host star in 4.2 d, using HST and Spitzer revealed a feature-rich transmission spectrum with strong excess absorption at 4.5 um. However, the limited spectral resolution and coverage of these instruments could not distinguish between CO and/or CO2 absorption causing this signal, with both low and high C/O ratio scenarios being possible. Here we present near-infrared (0.9--2.5 um) transit observations of WASP-127 b using the high-resolution SPIRou spectrograph, with the goal to disentangle CO from CO2 through the 2.3 um CO band. With SPIRou, we detect H2O at a t-test significance of 5.3 sigma and observe a tentative (3 sigma) signal consistent with OH absorption. From a joint SPIRou + HST + Spitzer retrieval analysis, we rule out a CO-rich scenario by placing an upper limit on the CO abundance of log10[CO], 23 pages, 13 figures, Submitted for publication in the Monthly Notice of the Royal Astronomical Society

12. Diversity of terrestrial planets: a link to the chemical makeup of their host stars

Abstract: With the swift advance in exoplanet sciences it is now possible to characterize not only the fundamental parameters (mass and radius) of planets but also their interior structure and bulk composition. The former is known to influence on the habitability conditions of terrestrial planets, and the latter in itself is a key aspect to understand planet formation processes and the origin of their diversity. In order to accurately assess planetary internal composition, the derivation of the chemical abundances of the host stars is of extreme importance. In particualr, stellar abundances of Fe, Si, Mg are proposed as principal constraints to reduce degeneracy in exoplanet interior structure models under assumption of identical composition of these elements in the rocky planets and their host stars. This regularly used assumption is based on our knowledge that stars and planets form from the same primordial gas and dust cloud. It is also supported by our Solar System observations for which we know that the composition of major rock forming elements (such as Mg, Si, and Fe) in the meteorites and telluric planets (with the exception of Mercury) is similar to that of the Sun. However, direct observational evidence for the aforementioned assumption for exoplanets is absent. By using the largest possible sample of precisely characterized low-mass planets and their host stars, we show that the composition of the planet building blocks indeed correlates with the properties of the rocky planets (see Fig. 1). We also find that on average the iron-mass fraction of planets is higher than that of the primordial values, owing to the disk-chemistry and planet formation processes. Additionally, we show that super-Earths and super-Mercuries appear to be distinct populations with differing compositions, implying differences in their formation processes. We suggest that giant impact alone is not responsible for the high-densities of super-Mercuries. I propose an oral contribution to speak about these very recent results published in Scinece. Abstract: We explore the transit timing variations (TTVs) of the young (22 Myr) nearby AU Mic planetary system. For AU Mic b, we introduce three Spitzer (4.5 $\mu$m) transits, five TESS transits, 11 LCO transits, one PEST transit, one Brierfield transit, and two transit timing measurements from Rossiter-McLaughlin observations; for AU Mic c, we introduce three TESS transits. We present two independent TTV analyses. First, we use EXOFASTv2 to jointly model the Spitzer and ground-based transits and to obtain the midpoint transit times. We then construct an O--C diagram and model the TTVs with Exo-Striker. Second, we reproduce our results with an independent photodynamical analysis. We recover a TTV mass for AU Mic c of 10.8$^{+2.3}_{-2.2}$ M$_{E}$. We compare the TTV-derived constraints to a recent radial-velocity (RV) mass determination. We also observe excess TTVs that do not appear to be consistent with the dynamical interactions of b and c alone, and do not appear to be due to spots or flares. Thus, we present a hypothetical non-transiting "middle-d" candidate exoplanet that is consistent with the observed TTVs, the candidate RV signal, and would establish the AU Mic system as a compact resonant multi-planet chain in a 4:6:9 period commensurability. These results demonstrate that the AU Mic planetary system is dynamically interacting producing detectable TTVs, and the implied orbital dynamics may inform the formation mechanisms for this young system. We recommend future RV and TTV observations of AU Mic b and c to further constrain the masses and to confirm the existence of possible additional planet(s)., Comment: Corrected typos; revised Section 3, 4, and 5 to reflect reanalysis, results unchanged. 14. Exocomets size distribution in the [Formula: see text] Pictoris planetary system

Abstract: The star [Formula: see text] Pictoris harbors a young planetary system of about 20 million years old, which is characterized by the presence of a gaseous and dusty debris disk, at least two massive planets and many minor bodies. For more than thirty years, exocomets transiting the star have been detected using spectroscopy, probing the gaseous part of the cometary comas and tails. The detection of the dusty component of the tails can be performed through photometric observations of the transits. Since 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite has observed [Formula: see text] Pic for a total of 156 days. Here we report an analysis of the TESS photometric data set with the identification of a total of 30 transits of exocomets. Our statistical analysis shows that the number of transiting exocomet events (N) as a function of the absorption depth (AD) in the light curve follows a power law in the form [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. This distribution of absorption depth leads to a differential comet size distribution proportional to [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text], showing a striking similarity to the size distribution of comets in the Solar system and the distribution of a collisionally relaxed population ([Formula: see text]).

Abstract: Exploring the properties of exoplanets near or inside the radius valley provides insights on the transition from the rocky super-Earths to the larger, hydrogen-rich atmosphere mini-Neptunes. Here, we report the discovery of TOI-1452 b, a transiting super-Earth ($R_{\rm p} = 1.67 \pm 0.07$ R$_{\oplus}$) in an 11.1--day temperate orbit ($T_{\rm eq} = 326 \pm 7$ K) around the primary member ($H = 10.0$, $T_{\rm eff} = 3185 \pm 50$ K) of a nearby visual binary M dwarf. The transits were first detected by TESS, then successfully isolated between the two $3.2^{\prime\prime}$ companions with ground-based photometry from OMM and MuSCAT3. The planetary nature of TOI-1452 b was established through high-precision velocimetry with the near-infrared SPIRou spectropolarimeter as part of the ongoing SPIRou Legacy Survey. The measured planetary mass ($4.8 \pm 1.3$ M$_{\oplus}$) and inferred bulk density ($5.6^{+1.8}_{-1.6}$ g/cm$^3$) is suggestive of a rocky core surrounded by a volatile-rich envelope. More quantitatively, the mass and radius of TOI-1452 b, combined with the stellar abundance of refractory elements (Fe, Mg and Si) measured by SPIRou, is consistent with a core mass fraction of $18\pm6$ % and a water mass fraction of $22^{+21}_{-13}$%. The water world candidate TOI-1452 b is a prime target for future atmospheric characterization with JWST, featuring a Transmission Spectroscopy Metric similar to other well-known temperate small planets such as LHS 1140 b and K2-18 b. The system is located near Webb's northern Continuous Viewing Zone, implying that is can be followed at almost any moment of the year., Published in The Astronomical Journal

Abstract: We present a new algorithm for precision radial velocity (pRV) measurements, a line-by-line (LBL) approach designed to handle outlying spectral information in a simple but efficient manner. The effectiveness of the LBL method is demonstrated on two datasets, one obtained with SPIRou on Barnard's star, and the other with HARPS on Proxima Centauri. In the near-infrared, the LBL provides a framework for m/s-level accuracy in pRV measurements despite the challenges associated with telluric absorption and sky emission lines. We confirm with SPIRou measurements spanning 2.7 years that the candidate super-Earth on a 233-day orbit around Barnard's star is an artifact due to a combination of time-sampling and activity. The LBL analysis of the Proxima Centauri HARPS post-upgrade data alone easily recovers the Proxima b signal and also provides a 2-sigma detection of the recently confirmed 5-day Proxima d planet, but argues against the presence of the candidate Proxima c with a period of 1900 days. We provide evidence that the Proxima c signal is associated with small, unaccounted systematic effects affecting the HARPS-TERRA template matching RV extraction method for long-period signals. Finally, the LBL framework provides a very effective activity indicator, akin to the full width at half maximum derived from the cross-correlation function, from which we infer a rotation period of $92.1^{+4.2}_{-3.5}$ days for Proxima., Accepted for publication in AJ

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of SPIRou, the new-generation near-infrared spectropolarimeter / precision velocimeter recently installed on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Starting from the two main science goals, namely the quest for planetary systems around nearby M dwarfs and the study of magnetized star / planet formation, we outline the instrument concept that was designed to efficiently address these forefront topics, and detail the in-lab and on-sky instrument performances measured throughout the intensive testing phase that SPIRou was submitted to before passing the final acceptance review in early 2019 and initiating science observations. With a central position among the newly started programmes, the SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) Large Programme was allocated 300 CFHT nights until at least mid 2022. We also briefly describe a few of the first results obtained in the various science topics that SPIRou started investigating, focusing in particular on planetary systems of nearby M dwarfs, transiting exoplanets and their atmospheres, magnetic fields of young stars, but also on alternate science goals like the atmospheres of M dwarfs and the Earth's atmosphere. We finally conclude on the essential role that SPIRou and the CFHT can play in coordination with forthcoming major facilities like the JWST, the ELTs, PLATO and ARIEL over the decade., Comment: MNRAS, in press (20 pages, 18 figures, 1 table)

Abstract: We present the first exoplanet atmosphere detection made as part of the SPIRou Legacy Survey, a Large Observing Program of 300 nights exploiting the capabilities of SPIRou, the new near-infrared high-resolution (R ~ 70 000) spectro-polarimeter installed on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT; 3.6-m). We observed two transits of HD 189733, an extensively studied hot Jupiter that is known to show prominent water vapor absorption in its transmission spectrum. When combining the two transits, we successfully detect the planet's water vapor absorption at 5.9 sigma using a cross-correlation t-test, or with a Delta BIC >10 using a log-likelihood calculation. Using a Bayesian retrieval framework assuming a parametrized T-P profile atmosphere models, we constrain the planet atmosphere parameters, in the region probed by our transmission spectrum, to the following values: VMR[H2O] = -4.4^{+0.4}_{-0.4}, and P_cloud >~ 0.2 bar (grey clouds), both of which are consistent with previous studies of this planet. Our retrieved water volume mixing ratio is slightly sub-solar although, combining it with the previously retrieved super-solar CO abundances from other studies would imply super-solar C/O ratio. We furthermore measure a net blue shift of the planet signal of -4.62^{+0.46}_{-0.44} km s-1, which is somewhat larger than many previous measurements and unlikely to result solely from winds in the planet's atmosphere, although it could possibly be explained by a transit signal dominated by the trailing limb of the planet. Abstract: Stars and planets both form by accreting material from a surrounding disk. Because they grow from the same material, theory predicts that there should be a relationship between their compositions. In this study, we search for a compositional link between rocky exoplanets and their host stars. We estimate the iron-mass fraction of rocky exoplanets from their masses and radii and compare it with the compositions of their host stars, which we assume reflect the compositions of the protoplanetary disks. We find a correlation (but not a 1:1 relationship) between these two quantities, with a slope of >4, which we interpret as being attributable to planet formation processes. Super-Earths and super-Mercuries appear to be distinct populations with differing compositions, implying differences in their formation processes., Authors' version of the manuscript. Abstract: With the maturation of near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy, especially when used for precision radial velocity, data reduction has faced unprecedented challenges in terms of how one goes from raw data to calibrated, extracted, and corrected data with required precisions of thousandths of a pixel. Here we present APERO (A PipelinE to Reduce Observations), specifically focused on SPIRou, the near-infrared spectropolarimeter on the Canada--France--Hawaii Telescope (SPectropolarim\`etre InfraROUge, CFHT). In this paper, we give an overview of APERO and detail the reduction procedure for SPIRou. APERO delivers telluric-corrected 2D and 1D spectra as well as polarimetry products. Abstract: The present-day envelope of gaseous planets is a relic of how these giant planets originated and evolved. Measuring their elemental composition therefore presents a powerful opportunity to answer long-standing questions regarding planet formation. Obtaining precise observational constraints on the elemental inventory of giant exoplanets has, however, remained challenging due to the limited simultaneous wavelength coverage of current space-based instruments. Here, we present thermal emission observations of the non-transiting hot Jupiter $\tau$ Boo b using the new wide wavelength coverage (0.95$-$2.50$\,\mu$m) and high spectral resolution ($R=70\,000$) SPIRou spectrograph. By combining a total of 20 hours of SPIRou data obtained over five nights in a full atmospheric retrieval framework designed for high-resolution data, we constrain the abundances of all the major oxygen- and carbon-bearing molecules and recover a non-inverted temperature structure using a new free-shape, nonparametric TP profile retrieval approach. We find a volume mixing ratio of log(CO)$\,\,=-2.46_{-0.29}^{+0.25}$ and a highly depleted water abundance of less than $0.0072$ times the value expected for a solar composition envelope. Combined with upper limits on the abundances of CH$_4$, CO$_2$, HCN, TiO, and C$_2$H$_2$, this results in a gas-phase C/H ratio of 5.85$_{-2.82}^{+4.44}\times\,$solar, consistent with the value of Jupiter, and an envelope C/O ratio robustly greater than 0.60, even when taking into account the oxygen that may be sequestered out of the gas-phase. Combined, the inferred super-solar C/H, O/H, and C/O ratios on $\tau$ Boo b support a formation scenario beyond the water snowline in a disk enriched in CO due to pebble drift., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Abstract: Distinguishing classes within substellar objects and understanding their formation and evolution need larger samples of substellar companions such as exoplanets, brown dwarfs, and low-mass stars. In this paper, we look for substellar companions using radial velocity surveys of FGK stars with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. We assign here the radial velocity variations of 27 stars to their orbital motion induced by low-mass companions. We also constrained their plane-of-the-sky motion using HIPPARCOS and Gaia Data Release 1 measurements, which constrain the true masses of some of these companions. We report the detection and characterization of six cool Jupiters, three brown dwarf candidates, and 16 low-mass stellar companions. We additionally update the orbital parameters of the low-mass star HD 8291 B, and we conclude that the radial velocity variations of HD 204277 are likely due to stellar activity despite resembling the signal of a giant planet. One of the new giant planets, BD+631405 b, adds to the population of highly eccentric cool Jupiters, and it is presently the most massive member. Two of the cool Jupiter systems also exhibit signatures of an additional outer companion. The orbital periods of the new companions span 30 days to 11.5 years, their masses 0.72 Jupiter mass to 0.61 Solar mass, and their eccentricities 0.04 to 0.88. Abstract: Measuring the mean densities of close-in planets orbiting pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars is crucially needed by planet formation and evolution models. However, PMS stars exhibit intense magnetic activity inducing fluctuations in both photometric and RV curves that overshadow planet signatures. As a result, no close-in planet younger than 25 Myr has a well-constrained bulk density. In this study, we present a spectropolarimetric and velocimetric analysis of 27 near-infrared observations of the nearby active 22 Myr-old red dwarf AU Microscopii collected with SPIRou at the end of the year 2019. We jointly model the planet and stellar activity RV components, resulting in a 3.9σσ-detection of the recently-discovered close-in Neptune-sized planet AU Mic b, with an estimated mass of 17.1+4.7−4.5−4.5+4.7M⊕⊕, implying a Neptune-like density for the planet. A consistent detection of the planet is independently obtained by simultaneously reconstructing the surface distribution of bright and dark inhomogeneities and estimating the planet parameters using Doppler imaging (DI). Using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, we invert our time-series of intensity and circularly-polarized line profiles into distributions of brightness and large-scale magnetic field at the surface of the star and explore how these distributions are sheared by latitudinal differential rotation. Finally, we investigate the magnetic activity of AU Mic by computing various indicators and found that the disk-integrated magnetic flux density correlates best with the stellar activity RV signal, in line with recent solar observations.

Abstract: We present the discovery of two new transiting extrasolar planet candidates identified as TOI-1296.01 and TOI-1298.01 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planetary nature of these candidates has been secured with the SOPHIE high-precision spectrograph through the measurement of the companion’s mass with the radial velocity method. Both planets are similar to Saturn in mass and have similar orbital periods of a few days. They, however, show discrepant radii and therefore different densities. The radius discrepancy might be explained by the different levels of irradiation by the host stars. The subgiant star TOI-1296 hosts a low-density planet with 1.2 RJup while the less luminous, lower-size star TOI-1298 hosts a much denser planet with a 0.84 RJup radius, resulting in bulk densities of 0.198 and 0.743 g cm−3, respectively.In addition, both stars are strongly enriched in heavy elements, having metallicities of +0.44 and +0.49 dex, respectively. The planet masses and orbital periods are 0.298 ± 0.039 MJup and 3.9443715 ± 5.8 ± 10−6 days for TOI-1296b, and 0.356 ± 0.032 MJup and 4.537164 ± 1.2 ± 10−5 days for TOI-1298b. The mass measurements have a relative precision of better than 13%.

Abstract: We present the Optimization Method for the Electron Multiplying Charge-Coupled Devices (EMCCDs) of the Acquisition System of the SPARC4 (OMASS4). The OMASS4 uses as figures of merit the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the acquisition rate (AR) as a function of the operation mode of the CCDs. Three different modes of optimization are included in the OMASS4: (1) optimization of SNR only; (2) optimization of AR only; and (3) optimization of both SNR and AR simultaneously. The first two modes calculate an analytical maximization of the cost function whereas the third mode uses the bayesian optimization method to determine the optimum mode of operation. We apply the OMASS4 to find the optimum mode for observations obtained at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, Brazil, and compare the delivered modes of operation and its performance with the ones adopted by the observer. If the OMASS4 had been used as a tool to optimize the CCDs in all of these nights, it would be possible to improve their efficiency in 97.17 %, 65.08 %, and 77.66 % for the optimization modes 1, 2, and 3, respectively., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Measuring the mean densities of close-in planets orbiting pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars is crucially needed by planet formation and evolution models. This requires to measure both planet radii, from the depth of their transit light curves, and masses, from the radial velocity (RV) wobbles induced by the planet on its host star. However, PMS stars exhibit intense magnetic activity responsible for fluctuations in both photometric and RV curves that are much stronger than planet signatures. As a result, no close-in planet younger than 25 Myr has a well-constrained bulk density.AU Microscopii (AU Mic) is a nearby active 22-Myr old M1 star around which a close-in transiting planet was recently detected from TESS and Spitzer light-curves (Plavchan et al., 2020). Despite velocimetric follow-ups in the optical domain, the authors reported no more than an upper limit for the planet mass due to the large dispersion induced by stellar activity in their RV time-series. The high stellar brightness, and the expected decrease in the amplitude of stellar activity RV signals from the optical to the near-infrared domains, makes the nIR (YJHK bands) spectropolarimeter SPIRou (Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, atop Mauna Kea) the ideal instrument to measure the mass of AU Mic b. In this study, we present a spectropolarimetric and velocimetric analysis of 27 observations of AU Mic collected with SPIRou from September to November 2019. The dispersion of our RV time-series is about 45 m/s, ~2.5 times lower than that obtained in the optical domain. We jointly model the planet and stellar activity components of the RV data set, resulting in a 3.5σ detection a close-in transiting planet AU Mic b, with an estimated mass of 16.7 +/- 4.9 Earth mass, implying a Neptune-like bulk density of 1.3 +/- 0.4 g/cm³. A consistent detection of the planet is independently obtained by simultaneously reconstructing the surface brightness of the star and estimating the planet parameters using Zeeman-Doppler imaging (ZDI). Using ZDI, we invert our intensity and circularly-polarized spectra into surface brightness and large-scale magnetic field, resulting in a mainly poloidal and axisymmetric field of 475 G, dominated by a 450 G dipole tilted at 19° to the rotation axis towards phase 0.2. Moreover, we find that the large-scale magnetic field is sheared by solar-like differential rotation of 0.167 rad/d, twice as large as that shearing the spot/plage distribution. Finally, we compute various indicators of the stellar activity and study their rotational modulation and correlation with RVs. We find that the bisector inverse slope and small-scale magnetic field correlate best with the stellar activity RV signal. Surprisingly, chromospheric indices based on Helium I (HeI, 1083 nm) and Paschen Beta (PaB, 1282 nm) probe different regions of the stellar disc, HeI being mostly emitted around the magnetic equator while PaB emission is linked to the magnetic pole.AU Mic b already appears as a prime target for constraining planet formation and evolution models. Moreover, the interactions between the planet and the debris disk surrounding the system could give rise to promising synergies between photometric, spectroscopic and imaging techniques. Finally, AU Mic b is a primary candidate for an atmosphere characterization and, potentially, the detection of an extended H/He exosphere around AU Mic b with upcoming space- and ground-based missions.

Abstract: SPIRou is the newest spectropolarimeter and high-precision velocimeter that has recently been installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii. It operates in the near-infrared and simultaneously covers the 0.98–2.35 μm domain at high spectral resolution. SPIRou is optimized for exoplanet search and characterization with the radial-velocity technique, and for polarization measurements in stellar lines and subsequent magnetic field studies. The host of the transiting hot Jupiter HD 189733 b has been observed during early science runs. We present the first near-infrared spectropolarimetric observations of the planet-hosting star as well as the stellar radial velocities as measured by SPIRou throughout the planetary orbit and two transit sequences. The planetary orbit and Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly are both investigated and modeled. The orbital parameters and obliquity are all compatible with the values found in the optical. The obtained radial-velocity precision is compatible with about twice the photon-noise estimates for a K2 star under these conditions. The additional scatter around the orbit, of about 8 m s−1, agrees with previous results that showed that the activity-induced scatter is the dominant factor. We analyzed the polarimetric signal, Zeeman broadening, and chromospheric activity tracers such as the 1083nm HeI and the 1282nm Paβ lines to investigate stellar activity. First estimates of the average unsigned magnetic flux from the Zeeman broadening of the FeI lines give a magnetic flux of 290 ± 58 G, and the large-scale longitudinal field shows typical values of a few Gauss. These observations illustrate the potential of SPIRou for exoplanet characterization and magnetic and stellar activity studies.

Abstract: We present high resolution near-infrared spectropolarimetric observations using the SPIRou instrument at CFHT during a transit of the recently detected young planet AU Mic b, with supporting spectroscopic data from iSHELL at IRTF. We detect Zeeman signatures in the Stokes V profiles, and measure a mean longitudinal magnetic field of $\overline{B}_\ell=46.3\pm0.7$~G. Rotationally modulated magnetic spots likely cause long-term variations of the field with a slope of $d{B_\ell}/dt=-108.7\pm7.7$~G/d. We apply the cross-correlation technique to measure line profiles and obtain radial velocities through CCF template matching. We find an empirical linear relationship between radial velocity and $B_\ell$, which allows us to estimate the radial velocity variations which stellar activity induces through rotational modulation of spots for the five hours of continuous monitoring of AU Mic with SPIRou. We model the corrected radial velocities for the classical Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, using MCMC to sample the posterior distribution of the model parameters. This analysis shows that the orbit of AU Mic b is prograde and aligned with the stellar rotation axis with a sky-projected spin-orbit obliquity of $\lambda=0^{+18}_{-15}$ degrees. Abstract: This paper describes the software DRAGraces (Data Reduction and Analysis for GRACES), which is a pipeline reducing spectra from GRACES (Gemini Remote Access to the CFHT ESPaDOnS Spectrograph) at the Gemini North Telescope. The code is written in the IDL language. It is designed to find all the GRACES frames in a given directory, automatically determine the list of bias, flat, arc and science frames, and perform the whole reduction and extraction within a few minutes. We compare the output from DRAGraces with that of OPERA, a pipeline developed at CFHT that also can extract GRACES spectra. Both pipelines were developed completely independently, yet they give very similar extracted spectra. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, DRAGraces is more straightforward and easy to use and is less likely to be derailed by a parameter that needs to be tweaked, while OPERA offers a more careful extraction that can be significantly superior when the highest resolution is required and when the signal-to-noise ratio is low. One should compare both before deciding which one to use for their science. Yet, both pipelines deliver a fairly comparable resolution power (R~52.8k and 36.6k for DRAGraces and R~58k and 40k for OPERA in high and low-resolution spectral modes, respectively), wavelength solution and signal-to-noise ratio per resolution element., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for AJ publication

Abstract: AU Mic is a young, active star whose transiting planet was recently detected. We report our analysis of its TESS data, where we modeled the BY Draconis type quasi-periodic rotational modulation by starspots simultaneously to the flaring activity and planetary transits. We measured a flare occurrence rate of 6.35 flares per day for flares with amplitudes in the range of $0.06\% < f_{\rm max} < 1.5\%$ of the star flux. We employed a Bayesian MCMC analysis to model the five transits of AU Mic b, improving the constraints on the planetary parameters. The planet radius of $4.07\pm0.17$~R$_{\oplus}$ and a mean density of $1.4\pm0.4$~g~cm$^{-3}$ confirms that it is a Neptune-size moderately inflated planet. While a single feature possibly due to a second planet was previously reported in the former TESS data, we report the detection of two additional transit-like events in the new TESS observations of July 2020. This represents substantial evidence for a second planet (AU Mic c) in the system. We analyzed its three transits and obtained an orbital period of $18.859019\pm0.000016$~d and a planetary radius of $3.24\pm0.16$~R$_{\oplus}$, which defines it as a warm Neptune-size planet with an expected mass in the range of 2.2~M$_{\oplus}$~$< M_{\rm c} < $25.0~M$_{\oplus}$. The two planets in the system are in near 9:4 mean-motion resonance. We show that this configuration is dynamically stable and should produce transit-timing variations (TTV). Abstract: We present a velocimetric and spectropolarimetric analysis of 27 observations of the 22-Myr M1 star AU Microscopii (Au Mic) collected with the high-resolution $YJHK$ (0.98-2.35 $\mu$m) spectropolarimeter SPIRou from 2019 September 18 to November 14. Our radial velocity (RV) time-series exhibits activity-induced fluctuations of 45 m/s RMS, about three times smaller than those measured in the optical domain, that we filter using Gaussian Process Regression. We report a 3.9$\sigma$-detection of the recently-discovered 8.46-d transiting planet AU Mic b, with an estimated mass of $17.1^{+4.7}_{-4.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a bulk density of $1.3 \pm 0.4$ g/cm$^{-3}$, inducing a RV signature of semi-amplitude $K=8.5^{+2.3}_{-2.2}$ m/s in the spectrum of its host star. A consistent detection is independently obtained when we simultaneously image stellar surface inhomogeneities and estimate the planet parameters with Zeeman-Doppler Imaging (ZDI). Using ZDI, we invert the time series of unpolarized and circularly-polarized spectra into surface brightness and large-scale magnetic maps. We find a mainly poloidal and axisymmetric field of 475 G, featuring, in particular, a dipole of 450 G tilted at 19{\deg} to the rotation axis. Moreover, we detect a strong differential rotation of d$\Omega = 0.167 \pm 0.009$ rad/d shearing the large-scale field, about twice stronger than that shearing the brightness distribution, suggesting that both observables probe different layers of the convective zone. Even though we caution that more RV measurements are needed to accurately pin down the planet mass, AU Mic b already appears as a prime target for constraining planet formation models, studying the interactions with the surrounding debris disk, and characterizing its atmosphere with upcoming space- and ground-based missions., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures, MNRAS, in press

Abstract: Wide binary stars with similar components hosting planets provide a favorable opportunity for exploring the star-planet chemical connection. We perform a detailed characterization of the solar-type stars in the WASP-160 binary system. No planet has been reported yet around WASP-160A while WASP-160B is known to host a transiting Saturn-mass planet, WASP-160B b. For this planet, we also derive updated properties from both literature and new observations. Furthermore, using TESS photometry, we constrain the presence of transiting planets around WASP-160A and additional ones around WASP-160B. The stellar characterization includes, for the first time, the computation of high-precision differential atmospheric and chemical abundances of 25 elements based on high-quality Gemini-GRACES spectra. Our analysis reveals evidence of a correlation between the differential abundances and the condensation temperatures of the elements. In particular, we find both a small but significant deficit of volatiles and an enhancement of refractory elements in WASP-160B relative to WASP-160A. After WASP-94, this is the second stellar pair among the shortlist of planet-hosting binaries showing this kind of peculiar chemical pattern. Although we discuss several plausible planet formation and evolution scenarios for WASP-160A and B that could explain the observed chemical pattern, none of them can be conclusively accepted or rejected. Abstract: We present the discovery of an $18.5\pm0.5$M$_{\rm Jup}$ brown dwarf (BD) companion to the M0V star TOI-1278. The system was first identified through a percent-deep transit in TESS photometry; further analysis showed it to be a grazing transit of a Jupiter-sized object. Radial velocity (RV) follow-up with the SPIRou near-infrared high-resolution velocimeter and spectropolarimeter in the framework of the 300-night SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) carried out at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) led to the detection of a Keplerian RV signal with a semi-amplitude of $2306\pm10$ m/s in phase with the 14.5-day transit period, having a slight but non-zero eccentricity. The intermediate-mass ratio ($M_\star/M_{\rm{comp}} \sim31$) is unique for having such a short separation ($0.095\pm0.001$ AU) among known M-dwarf systems. Abstract: The photometric monitoring of planetary transits is an important method for the characterization of exoplanets. Transiting exoplanets allow measurements of the planetary radius and mass, providing information on the physical structure of the planet. Therefore, the parameters obtained with the transit method become fundamental for a comparative study of exoplanets in different planetary systems. In this work, we present the results obtained from observations of a transit event of the exoplanet HATS-24b using the new SPARC4 CCD mounted on the 1.6 m telescope of the Pico dos Dias Observatory (OPD). We have used Bayesian statistical inference to determine the physical parameters of this exoplanet, where we obtained a radius of 1.395+-0.057 RJup, mass of 2.26+-0.17 MJup, and density of 1.03+-0.15 g/cm^3. We have combined our measurements of the central time of transit and orbital period with values from the literature to obtain an improved ephemeris for the transits of HATS-24b, Tc=(2457948.709321+-0.000039) + E (1.3484978+-0.0000009). We have applied the differential analysis using a solar spectrum to recalculate the stellar surface parameters of HATS-24, where we obtained Teff=6125+-94 K, log(g)=4.370+-0.045 cm/s^2, and [Fe/H]=-0.229+-0.058 dex. This allowed us to estimate an equilibrium temperature for HATS-24b of Teq=2166+-53 K. The mass and radius of HATS-24b are consistent with the theoretical model of a pure helium-hydrogen planet at 1 Gy., Comment: A shorter version of this manuscript has been submitted to the Research Notes of the AAS (RNAAS)

Abstract: (abridged) Kepler-278 and Kepler-391 are two of the three evolved stars known to date on the RGB to host multiple short-period transiting planets. Moreover, these planets are among the smallest discovered around RGB stars. Here we present a detailed stellar and planetary characterization of these remarkable systems. Based on high-quality spectra from Gemini-GRACES for Kepler-278 and Kepler-391, we obtained refined stellar parameters and precise chemical abundances for 25 elements. Also, combining our new stellar parameters with a photodynamical analysis of the Kepler light curves, we determined accurate planetary properties of both systems. The precise spectroscopic parameters of Kepler-278 and Kepler-391, along with their high $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratios, show that both stars are just starting their ascent on the RGB. The planets Kepler-278b, Kepler-278c, and Kepler-391c are warm sub-Neptunes, whilst Kepler-391b is a hot sub-Neptune that falls in the hot super-Earth desert and, therefore, it might be undergoing photoevaporation of its outer envelope. The high-precision obtained in the transit times allowed us not only to confirm Kepler-278c's TTV signal, but also to find evidence of a previously undetected TTV signal for the inner planet Kepler-278b. From the presence of gravitational interaction between these bodies we constrain, for the first time, the mass of Kepler-278b ($M_{\mathrm{p}}$ = 56 $\substack{+37\\-13}$ $M_{\mathrm{\oplus}}$) and Kepler-278c ($M_{\mathrm{p}}$ = 35 $\substack{+9.9\\ -21} $ $M_{\mathrm{\oplus}}$). Finally, our photodynamical analysis also shows that the orbits of both planets around Kepler-278 are highly eccentric ($e \sim$ 0.7) and, surprisingly, coplanar. Abstract: Mass is one of the most important parameters for determining the true nature of an astronomical object. Yet, many published exoplanets lack a measurement of their true mass, in particular those detected as a result of radial-velocity (RV) variations of their host star. For those examples, only the minimum mass, or m sin i, is known, owing to the insensitivity of RVs to the inclination of the detected orbit compared to the plane of the sky. The mass that is given in databases is generally that of an assumed edge-on system (~90°), but many other inclinations are possible, even extreme values closer to 0° (face-on). In such a case, the mass of the published object could be strongly underestimated by up to two orders of magnitude. In the present study, we use GASTON, a recently developed tool taking advantage of the voluminous Gaia astrometric database to constrain the inclination and true mass of several hundreds of published exoplanet candidates. We find nine exoplanet candidates in the stellar or brown dwarf (BD) domain, among which six were never characterized. We show that 30 Ari B b, HD 141937 b, HD 148427 b, HD 6718 b, HIP 65891 b, and HD 16760 b have masses larger than 13.5 MJ at 3σ. We also confirm the planetary nature of 27 exoplanets, including HD 10180 c, d and g. Studying the orbital periods, eccentricities, and host-star metallicities in the BD domain, we found distributions with respect to true masses consistent with other publications. The distribution of orbital periods shows of a void of BD detections below ~100 d, while eccentricity and metallicity distributions agree with a transition between BDs similar to planets and BDs similar to stars in the range 40–50 MJ.

Abstract: We present the photometric characterization of the four iXon Ultra 888 CCD cameras of the SPARC4 instrument, which will be installed on the 1.6 m telescope of the Pico dos Dias Observatory in Brazil. We applied experimental methodologies for a systematic characterization of the read noise, electronic gain, dark current, and quantum efficiency of the CCDs. We have analyzed the statistical distribution of the read noise, and also its spatial gradient and temporal variability, where we obtained an average value of the read noise of 6.33 electrons. We applied the Janesick method to determine the electronic gain, where we obtained an average value of 3.35 e-/ADU. We have also obtained an average dark current of 0.00014 e-/pix/s for CCD internal temperature of -70 oC. We have inspected the dependency of the dark current with temperature and the spatial distribution of the dark current, where we found a variable profile in the CCD 9917. We developed an experiment using a bench mounted monochromator to obtain the spectral dependency of the quantum efficiency in the spectral range between 350 nm and 1100 nm, where we measured the quantum efficiency for each camera. The camera 9915 presents the highest quantum efficiency of 95.8 %. Our results are compared with those from the manufacturer. These experiments allow us to diagnose the performance of these CCD cameras, an important sub-system of the SPARC4 instrument. It also provides a systematic way for monitoring the aging of the CCDs.

Abstract: We present near infrared high-precision photometry for eight transiting hot Jupiters observed during their predicted secondary eclipses. Our observations were carried out using the staring mode of the WIRCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We present the observing strategies and data reduction methods which delivered time series photometry with statistical photometric precisionas low as 0.11%. We performed a Bayesian analysis to model the eclipse parameters and systematics simultaneously. The measured planet-to-star flux ratios allowed us to constrain the thermal emission from the day side of these hot Jupiters, as we derived the planet brightness temperatures. Our results combined with previously observed eclipses reveal an excess in the brightness temperatures relative to the blackbody prediction for the equilibrium temperatures of the planets for a wide range of heat redistribution factors. We find a trend that this excess appears to be larger for planets with lower equilibrium temperatures. Abstract: Based on optical high-resolution spectra obtained with CFHT/ESPaDOnS, we present new measurements of activity and magnetic field proxies of 442 low-mass K5-M7 dwarfs. The objects were analysed as potential targets to search for planetary-mass companions with the new spectropolarimeter and high-precision velocimeter, SPIRou. We have analysed their high-resolution spectra in an homogeneous way: circular polarisation, chromospheric features, and Zeeman broadening of the FeH infrared line. The complex relationship between these activity indicators is analysed: while no strong connection is found between the large-scale and small-scale magnetic fields, the latter relates with the non-thermal flux originating in the chromosphere. We then examine the relationship between various activity diagnostics and the optical radial-velocity jitter available in the literature, especially for planet host stars. We use this to derive for all stars an activity merit function (higher for quieter stars) with the goal of identifying the most favorable stars where the radial-velocity jitter is low enough for planet searches. We find that the main contributors to the RV jitter are the large-scale magnetic field and the chromospheric non-thermal emission. In addition, three stars (GJ 1289, GJ 793, and GJ 251) have been followed along their rotation using the spectropolarimetric mode, and we derive their magnetic topology. These very slow rotators are good representatives of future SPIRou targets. They are compared to other stars where the magnetic topology is also known. Abstract: Present and future high-precision radial-velocity spectrometers dedicated to the discovery of low-mass planets orbiting low-mass dwarfs need to focus on the best selected stars to make an efficient use of telescope time. In the framework of the preparation of the SPIRou Input Catalog, the CoolSnap program aims at screening M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood against binarity, rapid rotation, activity, ... To optimize the selection, the present paper describes the methods used to compute effective temperature, metallicity, projected rotation velocity of a large sample of 440 M dwarfs observed in the visible with the high-resolution spectro-polarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT. It also summarizes known and newly-discovered spectroscopic binaries, and stars known to belong to visual multiple systems. A calibration of the projected rotation velocity versus measured line widths for M dwarfs observed by the ESPaDOnS spectro-polarimeter is derived, and the resulting values are compared to equatorial rotation velocities deduced from rotation periods and radii. A comparison of the derived effective temperatures and metallicities with literature values is also conducted. Finally, the radial velocity uncertainty of each star in the sample is estimated, to narrow down the selection of stars to be included into the SPIRou Input Catalogue (SPIC)., 34 pages, 12 figures, 13 tables, MNRAS in press December 11, 2017

Abstract: SPIRou is a near-infrared (nIR) spectropolarimeter / velocimeter for the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), that will focus on two forefront science topics, (i) the quest for habitable Earth-like planets around nearby M stars, and (ii) the study of low-mass star/planet formation in the presence of magnetic fields. SPIRou will also efficiently tackle many key programmes beyond these two main goals, from weather patterns on brown dwarfs to Solar-System planet and exoplanet atmospheres. SPIRou will cover a wide spectral domain in a single exposure (0.98-2.44um at a resolving power of 70K, yielding unpolarized and polarized spectra of low-mass stars with a 15% average throughput at a radial velocity (RV) precision of 1 m/s. It consists of a Cassegrain unit mounted at the Cassegrain focus of CFHT and featuring an achromatic polarimeter, coupled to a cryogenic spectrograph cooled down at 80K through a fluoride fiber link. SPIRou is currently integrated at IRAP/OMP and will be mounted at CFHT in 2017 Q4 for a first light scheduled in late 2017. Abstract: Aims. To explore the possible chemical signature of planet formation in the binary system HAT-P-4, by studying abundance vs condensation temperature Tc trends. The star HAT-P-4 hosts a planet detected by transits while its stellar companion does not have any detected planet. We also study the Lithium content, which could shed light on the problem of Li depletion in exoplanet host stars. Conclusions. The exoplanet host star HAT-P-4 is found to be ~0.1 dex more metal rich than its companion, which is one of the highest differences in metallicity observed in similar systems. This could have important implications for chemical tagging studies, disentangling groups of stars with a common origin. We rule out a possible peculiar composition for each star as lambda Boo, delta Scuti or a Blue Straggler. The star HAT-P-4 is enhanced in refractory elements relative to volatile when compared to its stellar companion. Notably, the Lithium abundance in HAT-P-4 is greater than in its companion by ~0.3 dex, which is contrary to the model that explains the Lithium depletion by the presence of planets. We propose a scenario where, at the time of planet formation, the star HAT-P-4 locked the inner refractory material in planetesimals and rocky planets, and formed the outer gas giant planet at a greater distance. The refractories were then accreted onto the star, possibly due to the migration of the giant planet. This explains the higher metallicity, the higher Lithium content, and the negative Tc trend detected. A similar scenario was recently proposed for the solar twin star HIP 68468, which is in some aspects similar to HAT-P-4. We estimate a mass of at least Mrock ~ 10 Mearth locked in refractory material in order to reproduce the observed Tc trends and metallicity., 5 pages, 6 figures, A&A Letters accepted

44. How to look for planetary transits using small telescopes and commercial CCDs in developing countries

Abstract: The main goal of this work is to have a better understanding of the problems and characteristics of photometric surveys with small-sized affordable equipment, like the one available at the Astrophysics Division/INPE, in São José dos Campos, Brazil. The use of low-cost instruments is appealing in the context of the detection of Extrasolar Planets (ESP), in the sense that many observers are available for survey and follow-up programmes. It could also make possible the inclusion of many developing countries in the search for planetary transits. We describe the data collection and analysis procedure for differential photometry of the transit of HD 209458 b, using a small telescope and a commercial CCD camera. According to the HST observations of Brown et al. (2001), the transit produces a box-shaped light curve with 2% depth and 184-min duration. The orbital period is ∼ 3.5 days. The equipment consists of a f/10, 11” Schmidt-Cassegrain Celestron telescope equipped with a SBIG ST7E CCD camera. Since the seeing at the campus is quite poor, we used a focal reducer to produce an effective focal ratio of about f/5, still keeping a good sampling of the PSF but with a larger field of view. The larger field of view allows the simultaneous observation of a relatively bright nearby star, suitable for differential photometry. We discuss the IRAF reduction procedures for the large number of images collected and present the results obtained in the transit of September 8, 2004

45. GRACES: Gemini remote access to CFHT ESPaDOnS spectrograph through the longest astronomical fiber ever made: experimental phase completed

Abstract: The Gemini Remote Access to CFHT ESPaDONS Spectrograph has achieved first light of its experimental phase in May 2014. It successfully collected light from the Gemini North telescope and sent it through two 270 m optical fibers to the the ESPaDOnS spectrograph at CFHT to deliver high-resolution spectroscopy across the optical region. The fibers gave an average focal ratio degradation of 14% on sky, and a maximum transmittance of 85% at 800nm. GRACES achieved delivering spectra with a resolution power of R = 40,000 and R = 66,000 between 400 and 1,000 nm. It has a ∼8% throughput and is sensitive to target fainter than 21st mag in 1 hour. The average acquisition time of a target is around 10 min. This project is a great example of a productive collaboration between two observatories on Maunakea that was successful due to the reciprocal involvement of the Gemini, CFHT, and NRC Herzberg teams, and all the staff involved closely or indirectly., Advances in Optical and Mechanical Technologies for Telescopes and Instrumentation, June 23-27, 2014, Series: Proceedings of SPIE; no. 9151

Abstract: SPIRou is a near-IR echelle spectropolarimeter and high-precision velocimeter under construction as a next- generation instrument for the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope. It is designed to cover a very wide simultaneous near-IR spectral range (0.98-2.35 μm) at a resolving power of 73.5K, providing unpolarized and polarized spectra of low-mass stars at a radial velocity (RV) precision of 1m/s. The main science goals of SPIRou are the detection of habitable super-Earths around low-mass stars and the study of stellar magnetism of star at the early stages of their formation. Following a successful final design review in Spring 2014, SPIRou is now under construction and is scheduled to see first light in late 2017. 47. Measuring the continuum polarization with ESPaDOnS

Abstract: Our goal is to test the feasibility to obtain accurate measurements of the continuum polarization from high-resolution spectra using the spectropolarimetric mode of ESPaDOnS. We used the new pipeline OPERA to reduce recent and archived ESPaDOnS data. A couple of standard polarization stars and several science objects were tested for the linear mode. In addition, the circular mode was tested using several objects from the archive with expected null polarization. Synthetic broad-band polarization was computed from the ESPaDOnS continuum polarization spectra and compared with published values (when available) to quantify the accuracy of the instrument. The continuum linear polarization measured by ESPaDOnS is consistent with broad-band polarimetry measurements available in the literature. The accuracy in the degree of linear polarization is around 0.2-0.3% considering the full sample. The accuracy in polarization position angle using the most polarized objects is better than 5deg. Consistent with this, the instrumental polarization computed for the circular continuum polarization is also between 0.2-0.3%. 48. Kepler Observations of Very Low-Mass Stars

Abstract: Observations of very low-mass stars with Kepler represent an excellent opportunity to search for planetary transits and to characterize optical photometric variability at the cool end of the stellar mass distribution. In this paper, we present low-resolution red optical spectra that allow us to identify 18 very low-mass stars that have Kepler light curves available in the public archive. Spectral types of these targets are found to lie in the range dM4.5--dM8.5, implying spectrophotometric distances from 17 pc to 80 pc. Limits to the presence of transiting planets are placed from modelling of the Kepler light curves. We find that the size of the planets detectable by Kepler around these small stars typically lie in the range 1 to 5 Earth radii within the habitable regions (P$\le$10 days). We identify one candidate transit with a period of 1.26 days that resembles the signal produced by a planet slightly smaller than the Moon. However, our pixel by pixel analysis of the Kepler data shows that the signal most likely arises from a background contaminating eclipsing binary. For 11 of these objects reliable photometric periods shorter than 7 days are derived, and are interpreted as rotational modulation of magnetic cool spots. For 3 objects we find possible photometric periods longer than 50 days that require confirmation. H$_\alpha$ emission measurements and flare rates are used as a proxies for chromospheric activity and transversal velocities are used as an indicator of dynamical ages. These data allow us to discuss the relationship between magnetic activity and detectability of planetary transits around very low-mass stars. We show that Super-Earth planets with sizes around 2 Earth radii are detectable with Kepler around about two thirds of the stars in our sample, independently from their level of chromospheric activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

49. Open source pipeline for ESPaDOnS reduction and analysis

Abstract: OPERA is a Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) open source collaborative software project currently under development for an ESPaDOnS echelle spectro-polarimetric image reduction pipeline. OPERA is designed to be fully automated, performing calibrations and reduction, producing one-dimensional intensity and polarimetric spectra. The calibrations are performed on two-dimensional images. Spectra are extracted using an optimal extraction algorithm. While primarily designed for CFHT ESPaDOnS data, the pipeline is being written to be extensible to other echelle spectrographs. A primary design goal is to make use of fast, modern object-oriented technologies. Processing is controlled by a harness, which manages a set of processing modules, that make use of a collection of native OPERA software libraries and standard external software libraries. The harness and modules are completely parametrized by site configuration and instrument parameters. The software is open- ended, permitting users of OPERA to extend the pipeline capabilities. All these features have been designed to provide a portable infrastructure that facilitates collaborative development, code re-usability and extensibility. OPERA is free software with support for both GNU/Linux and MacOSX platforms. The pipeline is hosted on SourceForge under the name "opera-pipeline".

Abstract: The Gemini Remote Access CFHT ESPaDOnS Spectrograph (GRACES) is an innovative instrumentation experiment that will demonstrate if ESPaDOnS, a bench-mounted high-resolution optical spectrograph at CFHT, can be fed by a 270-m long fiber from the Gemini-North telescope with low enough losses to remain competitive with conventional spectrographs on other 8 to 10-m telescopes. Detailed simulations have shown that GRACES should be more sensitive than the HIRES spectrograph at Keck Observatory at wavelengths longer than about 600-700 nm. This result is possible by using FPB-type of optical fibers made by Polymicro Technologies and by keeping the critical focal ratio degradation (FRD) losses to less than 10%. Laboratory tests on these FPB optical fibers are underway and show that for 36-m lengths that the FRD losses are as low as 0.8% with a repeatability of 1%.
