Introduction: Inguinal hernia and varicocele are common conditions in male population. Laparoscopy brings the opportunity to treat them simultaneously, through the same incision. However, there are different opinions about the risks for testicular perfusion of multiple procedures in the inguinal region. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of simultaneous laparoscopic procedures by studying clinical and surgical outcomes of patients undergoing bilateral inguinal hernioplasty using the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) technique with and without concomitant bilateral laparoscopic varicocelectomy (VLB). Methods: a sample of 20 patients from the University Hospital of USP-SP with indirect inguinal hernia and varicocele with indication for surgical correction was selected. Patients were randomized into two groups, 10 undergoing TAPP (Group I) and 10 undergoing simultaneous TAPP and VLB (Group II). Data regarding total operative time, complications and postoperative pain was gathered and analyzed. Results: there was no statistical difference between groups regarding total operative time and postoperative pain. Only one complication (spermatic cord hematoma) was observed in Group I and no complications were observed in Group II. Conclusions: simultaneous TAPP and VLB in was shown to be effective and safe, which provides a basis for conducting studies on larger scales. RESUMO Introdução: hérnia inguinal e varicocele são doenças comuns na população masculina. O advento da laparoscopia traz a oportunidade de tratá-las simultaneamente, pelo mesmo acesso. Entretanto, existem divergências sobre os riscos para a perfusão testicular de múltiplos procedimentos na região inguinal. Neste estudo, avaliamos a viabilidade de procedimentos laparoscópicos simultâneos estudando resultados clínicos e cirúrgicos de pacientes submetidos à hernioplastia inguinal bilateral pela técnica transabdominal préperitoneal (TAPP) com e sem varicocelectomia laparoscópica bilateral (VLB) concomitante. Métodos: uma amostra de 20 pacientes do Hospital Universitário da USP-SP com hérnia inguinal indireta e varicocele com indicação de correção cirúrgica foi selecionada. Os pacientes foram randomizados em dois grupos, sendo 10 submetidos à TAPP (Grupo I) e 10 submetidos à TAPP e VLB simultâneas (Grupo II). O tempo operatório total, complicações e dor pós-operatória foram coletados e analisados. Resultados: não houve diferença estatística entre os grupos com relação ao tempo operatório total e à dor pós-operatória. Apenas uma complicação (hematoma do cordão espermático) foi observada no Grupo I e não foram observadas complicações no Grupo II. Conclusões: no mesmo procedimento, submeter pacientes à TAPP e à VLB no mesmo procedimento se mostrou eficaz e seguro, o que fornece embasamento para a realização de estudos em maiores escalas.

Aims: The aim of this work was to evaluate the optimal radiation dose to maintain the antioxidant capacity of conventional and organic acaí freeze-dried pulps. Study Design: All analyses were conducted in sextuplicate for each experiment. Place and Duration of Study: Were conducted at the LATAIA and the irradiation processes at the Laboratory of Nuclear Instrumentation, UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The study was carried out from July, 2018 to March, 2020. Methodology: Frozen acaí pulps from two commercial brands, one of them organic and other conventional were used and purchased in the city of Rio de Janeiro, packed in plastic bags containing 1 kg. For each brand, frozen pulps (5 kg) were thawed at 4ºC, opened and homogenized. Samples were subdivided into aliquots ranging from 20 to 300 g for the assays and frozen inside the plastic bags until analyses. A Cobalt 60, Gammacell irradiator was used and doses of 1.25. 2.5. 3.75 and 5 kGy were applied in the in natura pulps. Antioxidant capacity was performed by the ORAC and DPPH methods and, phenolic compounds by Folin Ciocalteau method and, total anthocyanins and majority anthocyanidins by HPLC. Results: Anthocyanins increases at irradiaton dose up to 3.75 kGy in organic açaí but it was not significant in conventional acaí irradiated at low doses (1.25 to 3.75 kGy). Our results suggested that irradiation doses up to 5 kGy do not decrease total phenolic or anthocyanin contents nor the pulp antioxidant activity compared with non-irradiated pulps. The results showed irradiation did not reduce these analytes, and even increased in the organic acaí. Conclusion: The study evidenced that gamma irradiation can be an alternative safe process for fruit pulps preservation. We conclude that irradiation doses up to 5 kGy can be used in acaí without harming its antioxidant properties.

Este trabalho discute os impactos in loco da atuação de egressos de Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) brasileiras localizadas fora de grandes centros urbanos, tendo como estudo de caso o curso de Ciência da Computação do Instituto Federal do Ceará (IFCE) Campus Aracati. Nele é delineado o perfil dos egressos a partir do cruzamento de diversos indicadores: tipo e local de atuação profissional, faixa salarial, pós-graduação e formação extracurricular durante a graduação. É mostrado que, apesar da maioria dos egressos atuar na área de tecnologia com bons salários, houve um êxodo considerável dos egressos oriundos do município de formação e região para a capital Fortaleza-CE, o que coloca em questão a necessidade de novas e urgentes estratégias para desenvolvimento socioeconômico das regiões interioranas que abrigam IES.

Little is known about the characteristics of individuals seeking treatment for food addiction (FA), and the clinical utility of FA has yet to be established. To address these gaps, we examined (i) the demographic, eating pathology, and psychiatric conditions associated with FA and (ii) whether FA is associated with psychosocial impairments when accounting for eating-related and other psychopathology. Forty-six patients seeking treatment for FA completed self-report questionnaires and semi-structured clinical interviews. The majority of the sample were women and self-identified as White, with a mean age of 43 years. Most participants (83.3%) presented with a comorbid psychiatric condition, most commonly anxiety and mood disorders, with a mean of 2.31 comorbid conditions. FA was associated with binge eating severity and anxiety symptoms, as well as psychological, physical, and social impairment. In regression analyses controlling for binge eating severity, food cravings, depression, and anxiety, FA remained a significant predictor only of social impairment. Taken together, the results suggest that individuals seeking treatment for FA are likely to present with significant comorbid conditions, in particular anxiety disorders. The results of the present research provide evidence for the clinical utility of FA, particularly in explaining social impairment.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Since the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance has been observed. Economic and technological factors have influenced the drug industries and decreased or ceased research focusing on new antibiotics. In such a way, the Antibiotic Crisis was established, culminating in a growing expenditure on hospital expenses and an increase in medication dosages. Microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus are among the most common causes of hospital infections that are difficult to treat. Therefore, research with natural products has been indicated as a promising strategy for obtaining new antibiotics. Secondary plant metabolites, especially the Myrtaceae family, have shown satisfactory results for this purpose. However, this work presents antimicrobial results from extracts obtained from leaves, stems and roots of Eugenia klotzschiana with different solvents of varying polarities. Desde a descoberta da penicilina por Alexander Fleming observa-se o fenômeno da resistência antibiótica. Fatores econômicos e tecnológicos influenciaram as indústrias de medicamentos e diminuírem ou cessarem pesquisas com foco em novos antibióticos. De tal maneira, instaura-se a Crise dos Antibióticos culminando em um crescente gasto com despesas hospitalares e aumento de dosagens medicamentosas. Microrganismos como Escherichia coli, Candida albicans e Staphylococcus aureus estão entre os causadores mais comuns de infecções hospitalares de difícil tratamento. Sendo assim, a pesquisa com produtos naturais tem sido indicada como promissora estratégia para a obtenção de novos antibióticos. Metabólitos secundários de plantas, com destaque para a família Myrtaceae, têm apresentado resultados satisfatórios para este fim. No entanto, este trabalho apresenta resultados antimicrobianos de extratos obtidos de folhas, caules e raízes de Eugenia klotzschiana com diferentes solventes de variadas polaridades. O presente artigo é resultado de um estudo sobre dinâmicas regionais de desenvolvimento, propiciando a formação de redes migratórias e, consequentemente, a própria configuração das trajetórias migratórias observadas num determinado espaço/tempo. O espaço central de análise é o município de Imperatriz, localizado no sudoeste do estado do Maranhão, que possui uma formação histórica que pode ser compreendida a partir de ciclos de desenvolvimento econômico, influenciando os fluxos migratórios responsáveis pelo povoamento do município a partir da década de 1960. A abordagem em torno dessa construção espacial fundamenta-se no método materialista histórico, com qual se enfatizaram a historicidade e as contradições presentes nas formas como a dinâmica de desenvolvimento do município de Imperatriz condicionou os fluxos migratórios que o povoaram a partir da década de 1960.

Excoriation disorder (ED) is characterized by recurring excoriation of the skin resulting in tissue damage, usually associated with emotional deregulation. Psychotherapy is a valuable treatment; however, no studies emphasize the patients' interactional aspect, nor the potential benefit of group treatment.We recruited a convenience sample of 38 individuals with ED according to DSM-5 criteria, in which 19 individuals proceeded to treatment, 10 with psychodrama group therapy (PGT), and 9 with support group therapy (SGT) in an open pilot study.The entire sample presented improvement of skin excoriation on both self-report and clinician rating and improvement of social adjustment; however, there was no difference between groups (ie, time × group interaction). Also, there was no relevant change for anxiety, depression, or emotional regulation throughout treatment. Emotional deregulation was associated with excoriation severity as well as depression, anxiety, and social maladjustment, both at the beginning and end of treatment.Although both groups showed improvement of skin picking, the results contradict our primary hypothesis that PGT would have a superior efficacy to SGT for patients with ED. The findings encourage future studies of group interventions for ED in larger samples with a focus on emotional regulation enhancement.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a resistance training (at least 6 months of practice) would be beneficial in improving trained subjects’ response to oxidative stress. The study evaluated 19 volunteers aged between 18 and 32 years, who were divided into two groups: sedentary and trained. In order to induce an oxidative stress condition, all individuals participated in a single intense-strength session. Volunteers’ blood was collected before and after the exercise practice, which was used later on for biochemical analyses (TBARS, uric acid and activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase). Furthermore, physical fitness of the participants was evaluated through high-yield tests (strength, agility and aerobic endurance). We found that all measured physical fitness variables were superior in the trained subjects. Additionally, sedentary individuals presented higher levels of plasma malondialdehyde after the intense exercise session (157 % higher; 1.9 ± 1.1–4.9 ± 3.1). No difference was found in uric acid concentration between groups. An increase of SOD activity (50 % greater; 0.4 ± 0.19–0.6 ± 0.12) was also demonstrated in the erythrocytes of sedentary subjects after the exercise practice. SOD activity did not change in the trained group. On the contrary, CAT activity increased only in the trained subjects (48.2 % greater; 2.7 ± 0.9–4.2 ± 1.2). Resistance training was effective in increasing participants’ physical fitness, and also in improving their response to the oxidative stress induced by an intense exercise practice. This mechanism may help trained subjects to improve their performance and health.

There has been polarizing debate on addictive-like eating in recent years. To move toward valid definition and measurement of this construct, qualitative research describing individuals' experiences is needed. The present study explored how Brazilian men and women define and experience addictive-like eating. Interviews were conducted with 7 men and 8 women (Mage = 46.6 years, MBMI = 35.43 kg/m2) seeking treatment for addictive-like eating. Thematic analysis of interviews identified three saturated, overarching themes describing participants’ conceptualizations of the (1) characteristics, (2) causal factors, and (3) consequences of addictive-like eating. Lack of control was a key characteristic of addictive-like eating described by all participants. A causal factor which most participants described was emotional eating. Consequences included emotional, interpersonal, occupational, and health-related impairments which appeared primarily related to weight gain, rather than to the pattern of addictive-like eating itself. These results are largely consistent with those of previous qualitative studies. Importantly, the symptoms described by our participants and in previous qualitative studies may be inadequately captured by existing self-report questionnaires designed to assess addictive-like eating. To address this potential limitation, we provide recommendations for assessing the full range of possible addictive-like eating symptoms.

This paper presents the main aspects regarding the production of biodegradable microspheres, the optimization of parameters in the drug encapsulation process, the techniques available for polymeric systems sterilization and the effects of γ-irradiation on microparticles.

Regional development in the Brazilian Middle-North sub-region is covered in this article following the paths guided by migratory flows, inducers of historical formation of this space. Discussions in this way show the relationships built into the structure of a production system that characterized the structure and superstructure of this guiding regional development. Thus, it seeks to achieve the goal of explaining how migration promoted regional development of this sub-region. Historical materialism method used in this study enables the understanding of development since the space occupied by the migrant until this century. Coupled with the aforementioned method, the census data complement the effort of understanding, through the obtained results and by typifying the forms and the development model achieved.JEL-Code | N96; O15; R23. El desarrollo regional en la subregión Medio Norte del Brasil está cubierto en este artículo siguiendo las rutas guiadas por los flujos migratorios, inductores de la formación histórica de este espacio. Las discusiones conducidas en esta trayectoria muestran las relaciones construidas para la estructuración de un sistema de producción que caracterizó la estructura y la superestructura orientadora del desarrollo de esa región. De este modo se busca explicar cómo la migración promovió el desarrollo regional de esta subregión. International audience; Background : Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency caused by inborn errors of the phagocyte nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase complex. From the first year of life onward, most affected patients display multiple, severe, and recurrent infections caused by bacteria and fungi. Mycobacterial infections have also been reported in some patients.Objective : Our objective was to assess the effect of mycobacterial disease in patients with CGD.Methods : We analyzed retrospectively the clinical features of mycobacterial disease in 71 patients with CGD. Tuberculosis and BCG disease were diagnosed on the basis of microbiological, pathological, and/or clinical criteria.Results : Thirty-one (44%) patients had tuberculosis, and 53 (75%) presented with adverse effects of BCG vaccination; 13 (18%) had both tuberculosis and BCG infections. None of these patients displayed clinical disease caused by environmental mycobacteria, Mycobacterium leprae, or Mycobacterium ulcerans. Most patients (76%) also had other pyogenic and fungal infections, but 24% presented solely with mycobacterial disease. Most patients presented a single localized episode of mycobacterial disease (37%), but recurrence (18%), disseminated disease (27%), and even death (18%) were also observed. One common feature in these patients was an early age at presentation for BCG disease. Mycobacterial disease was the first clinical manifestation of CGD in 60% of these patients.Conclusion : Mycobacterial disease is relatively common in patients with CGD living in countries in which tuberculosis is endemic, BCG vaccine is mandatory, or both. Adverse reactions to BCG and severe forms of tuberculosis should lead to a suspicion of CGD. BCG vaccine is contraindicated in patients with CGD.

Oblique magnetic resonance imaging of the temporal lobe (tilted orientation) requires a stable reference line with minimum variability. In the clinical setting, where several observers carry out examination of the patients, there is a need to assure minimum inter-observer variability, in order to obtain comparable tilted anatomical planes. This is particularly relevant when performing quantitative imaging (qMRI) of the hippocampus, amygdala and para-hippocampal cortices. In this study, eight experienced observers tested the stability of four sagittal reference lines by manually tracing the posterior commissure-obex (PC-OB) line, the line tangential to the anterior surface of the pons at its most convex point and the lines orthogonal to the main axis of both hippocampi, in ten exams of healthy subjects. The stability of the tracing was assessed by comparing the inter-observer variability expressed by the variances of the measurements. The observers' performance was assessed by comparing the precision of the tracing for each line. We tested the results statistically using Bartlett's test (analysis of the variances of the four lines) followed by Fischer-Snedecor (in order to compare the two lines that had the smallest variance). The PC-OB line and the line tangential to the anterior surface of the pons had smaller inter-observer variances than the orthogonal lines (p < 0.01). In addition, the variance of the PC-OB line was smaller than that of the line tangential to the pons (p < 0.01). There were no significant intra-observer differences in the precision of tracing of any of the lines. We show quantitatively that the PC-OB line is the scout reference that yields the smallest inter-observer variance. Thus, this line should be preferred to improve the reproducibility of temporal lobe imaging while performing tilted coronal and axial sequences, to make quantitative assessments of the hippocampus, amygdala and para-hippocampal cortices.

In this work, tomographic images of the same object have been taken with 25 keV X-rays and thermal neutrons (E=0.025 eV) aiming to demonstrate that thermal neutron tomography in some cases is a complementary technique to the X-ray tomography, such as in the examination of hydrogen-bearing compounds wrapped in a metallic matrix for instance. The capability of the neutron to pass through metallic materials such as lead, stainless steel and aluminium, allows to inspect encapsulated plastic explosives and visualize their inner structure like density variations, voids and alien materials, which are important features for the quality control of the final product. To obtain the images, a 3rd generation tomographic system with a Position Sensitive Detector has been developed. For X-rays this proportional detector was provided with an 8cm long carbon window, and filled with Ar - CH4 under a pressure of 2 atm. The X-ray beam was supplied by an ampoule with a tungsten anode manufactured by IPRJ/UERJ. For neutron detection the carbon window has been replaced by aluminium, and the filling-gas by ³He enriched helium, acting simultaneously as neutron converter and ionization gas. The Argonauta reactor at the Instituto de Engenharia Nuclear / CNEN was used as neutron source and furnishes a thermal neutron flux of 4.5x10(5) n · cm-2 · s-1 at its main channel outlet, where the tomographic system was installed.

Acid lime can be used as fresh fruit or as juice to increase the flavor of drinks. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze organic acid lime nutritional composition in order to evaluate if there are important differences among those conventionally produced. No significant differences in total titrable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, sucrose, calcium, and zinc were found between the acid lime juice from organic biodynamic crops and conventional crops. However, the organic biodynamic fruits presented higher peel percentage than the conventional ones leading to lower juice yield. On the other hand, fructose, glucose, total soluble solids contents, potassium, manganese, iron, and copper were higher in the conventional samples. These results indicated few nutritional differences between organic and conventional acid lime juices in some constituents. Nevertheless, fruit juice from biodynamic crops could be a good choice since it is free from pesticides and other agents that cause problems to human health maintaining the levels similar to those of important nutritional compounds. A lima ácida pode ser utilizada sob a forma in natura, como suco e para agregar sabor a bebidas. Portanto, é necessário avaliar diferenças na composição nutricional entre limas provenientes de cultivos orgânicos e convencionais. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas na acidez titulável total, pH, ácido ascórbico, sacarose, cálcio e zinco. Entretanto, os frutos orgânicos biodinâmicos apresentaram maior percentual de cascas e menor rendimento de suco do que os frutos convencionais. Por outro lado, os teores de frutose, glicose, sólidos solúveis totais, potássio, manganês, ferro e cobre foram mais elevados nos frutos orgânicos do que nos convencionais. Estes resultados indicam que existem poucas diferenças nutricionais entre limas ácidas convencionais e orgânicas biodinâmicas. Entretanto, os sucos provenientes de cultivo biodinâmico podem ser uma boa alternativa para escolha tendo em vista serem livres de pesticidas e outros agentes tóxicos, que podem causar danos à saúde humana, mantendo níveis próximos de importantes compostos nutricionais.
