1. Black holes with a nonconstant kinetic term in degenerate higher-order scalar tensor theories

Abstract

We investigate static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions in shift-symmetric quadratic-order degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We allow a nonconstant kinetic term $X=g^{\mu\nu} \partial_\mu\phi\partial_\nu \phi$ for the scalar field $\phi$ and assume that $\phi$ is, like the spacetime, a pure function of the radial coordinate $r$, namely $\phi=\phi(r)$. First, we find analytic static and spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the so-called {\it Class Ia} DHOST theories, which include the quartic Horndeski theories as a subclass. We consider several explicit models in this class and apply our scheme to find the exact vacuum BH solutions. BH solutions obtained in our analysis are neither Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild (anti-) de Sitter. We show that a part of the BH solutions obtained in our analysis are free of ghost and Laplacian instabilities and are also mode stable against the odd-parity perturbations. Finally, we argue the case that the scalar field has a linear time dependence $\phi=qt+\psi (r)$ and show several simple examples of nontrivial BH solutions with a nonconstant kinetic term obtained analytically and numerically., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, references added, published version

Abstract

We show that most classes of shift-symmetric degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories which satisfy certain degeneracy conditions are not compatible with the conditions for the existence of exact black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field whose canonical kinetic term takes a constant value. Combined with constraints from the propagation speed of gravitational waves, our results imply that cubic DHOST theories are strongly disfavoured and that pure quadratic theories are likely to be the most viable class of DHOST theories. We find exact static and spherically symmetric (Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter) black hole solutions in all shift-symmetric higher-derivative scalar-tensor theories which contain up to cubic order terms of the second-order derivatives of the scalar field, especially the full class of Horndeski and Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi theories. 3. Infinite Derivative Gravity: A finite number of predictions

Abstract

Ghost-free Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) is a modified gravity theory which can avoid the singularities predicted by General Relativity. This thesis examines the effect of IDG on four areas of importance for theoretical cosmologists and experimentalists. First, the gravitational potential produced by a point source is derived and compared to experimental evidence, around both Minkowski and (Anti) de Sitter backgrounds. Second, the conditions necessary for avoidance of singularities for perturbations around Minkowski and (Anti) de Sitter spacetimes are found, as well as for background Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Third, the modification to perturbations during primordial inflation is derived and shown to give a constraint on the mass scale of IDG, and to allow further tests of the theory. Finally, the effect of IDG on the production and propagation of gravitational waves is derived and it is shown that IDG gives almost precisely the same predictions as General Relativity for the power emitted by a binary system., Comment: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

It has been shown that the spectrum of quantum gravity contains at least two new modes in addition to the massless graviton: a massive spin-0 and a massive spin-2. We calculate their power spectrum during inflation and we argue that they could leave an imprint in the cosmic microwave background should their masses be below the inflationary scale.

5. Cosmological perturbations in generalised dark Lagrangians

Abstract

We describe a new method to parameterise dark energy theories including massive gravity, elastic dark energy and tensor-metric theories. We first examine a framework to describe any second order Lagrangian which depends on the variation of the metric and find new constraints on the parameters. We extend the method to Lorentz violating theories which depend on the variation of the time and spatial parts of the metric separately. We show how this can describe massive gravity and elastic dark energy, while ruling out the whole class of theories where the Lagrangian depends only on the variation of the time part of the metric. We further generalise our method to tensor-metric theories, both with and without splitting the metric into time and spatial parts. Our method extends existing physics by providing a mechanism to easily evaluate large classes of dark energy theories., Comment: 16 pages

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. 7. Gravitational radiation in Infinite Derivative Gravity and connections to Effective Quantum Gravity

Abstract

The Hulse-Taylor binary provides possibly the best test of GR to date. We find the modified quadrupole formula for Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG). We extend the backreaction formula for propagation of gravitational waves, found previously for Effective Quantum Gravity (EQG) for a flat background and extend this calculation to a de Sitter background for both EQG and IDG. We put tighter constraints on EQG using new LIGO data. We also find the power emitted by a binary system within the IDG framework for both circular and elliptical orbits and use the example of the Hulse-Taylor binary. IDG predicts a slightly lower power than GR, which is exactly the observed result. We also find a lower bound on our mass scale of $M>4.0$ keV, which is $10^6$ larger than the previous result., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review D

8. Conditions for defocusing around more general metrics in Infinite Derivative Gravity

Abstract

Infinite Derivative Gravity is able to resolve the Big Bang curvature singularity present in general relativity by using a simplifying ansatz. We show that it can also avoid the Hawking- Penrose singularity, by allowing defocusing of null rays through the Raychaudhuri equation. This occurs not only in the minimal case where we ignore the matter contribution, but also in the case where matter plays a key role. 9. Revealing Infinite Derivative Gravity's true potential: The weak-field limit around de Sitter backgrounds

Abstract

General Relativity is known to produce singularities in the potential generated by a point source. Our universe can be modelled as a de Sitter (dS) metric and we show that ghost-free Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) produces a non-singular potential around a dS background, while returning to the GR prediction at large distances. We also show that although there are an apparently infinite number of coefficients in the theory, only a finite number actually affect the predictions. By writing the linearised equations of motion in a simplified form, we find that at distances below the Hubble length scale, the difference between the IDG potential around a flat background and around a de Sitter background is negligible., Comment: 6 pages

Abstract

Recent study has shown that a non-singular oscillating potential, a feature of Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) theories, matches current experimental data better than the standard GR potential. In this work we show that this non-singular oscillating potential can be given by a wider class of theories which allows the defocusing of null rays, and therefore geodesic completeness. We consolidate the conditions whereby null geodesic congruences may be made past-complete, via the Raychaudhuri Equation, with the requirement of a non-singular Newtonian potential in an IDG theory. 12. UV completion of the Starobinsky model, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and constraints on non-locality

Abstract

In this paper, we build upon the successes of the ultraviolet (UV) completion of the Starobinsky model of inflation. This involves an extension of the Einstein-Hilbert term by an infinite covariant derivative theory of gravity, which is quadratic in curvature. It has been shown that such a theory can potentially resolve the cosmological singularity for a flat, homogeneous and isotropic geometry, and now it can also provide a successful cosmological inflation model, which in the infrared matches all the predictions of the Starobinsky model of inflation. The aim of this note is to show that the tensor-to-scalar ratio is modified by the scale of non-locality, and in general a wider range of tensor-to-scalar ratios can be obtained in this class of model, which can put a lower bound on the scale of non-locality for the first time as large as the O$(10^{14})$ GeV., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

In this paper we show that there is a universal prediction for the Newtonian potential for an infinite derivative, ghost-free, quadratic curvature gravity. We show that in order to make such a theory ghost-free at a perturbative level, the Newtonian potential always falls-off as 1/r in the infrared limit, while at short distances the potential becomes non-singular. 19. Infinite Derivative Gravity:a finite number of predictions

Abstract

Ghost-free Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) is a modifed gravity theory which can avoid the singularities predicted by General Relativity. This thesis examines the effect of IDG on four areas of importance for theoretical cosmologists and experimentalists. First, the gravitational potential produced by a point source is derived and compared to experimental evidence, around both Minkowski and (Anti) de Sitter backgrounds. Second, the conditions necessary for avoidance of singularities for perturbations around Minkowski and (Anti) de Sitter spacetimes are found, as well as for background Friedmann- Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Third, the modification to perturbations during primordial inflation is derived and shown to give a constraint on the mass scale of IDG, and to allow further tests of the theory. Finally, the effect of IDG on the production and propagation of gravitational waves is derived and it is shown that IDG gives almost precisely the same predictions as General Relativity for the power emitted by a binary system.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions.The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. 26. Revealing infinite derivative gravity's true potential:The weak-field limit around de Sitter backgrounds

Abstract

General Relativity is known to produce singularities in the potential generated by a point source. Our universe can be modelled as a de Sitter (dS) metric and we show that ghost-free Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) produces a non-singular potential around a dS background, while returning to the GR prediction at large distances. We also show that although there are an apparently infinite number of coefficients in the theory, only a finite number actually affect the predictions. By writing the linearised equations of motion in a simplified form, we find that at distances below the Hubble length scale, the difference between the IDG potential around a flat background and around a de Sitter background is negligible.

Abstract

In this paper we show that there is a universal prediction for the Newtonian potential for an infinite derivative, ghost-free, quadratic curvature gravity. We show that in order to make such a theory ghost-free at a perturbative level, the Newtonian potential always falls-off as 1/r in the infrared limit, while at short distances the potential becomes non-singular. We provide examples which can potentially test the scale of gravitational non-locality up to 0.01 eV.

31. Newtonian potential and geodesic completeness in infinite derivative gravity

Abstract

Recent study has shown that a nonsingular oscillating potential—a feature of infinite derivative gravity theories—matches current experimental data better than the standard General Relativity potential. In this work, we show that this nonsingular oscillating potential can be given by a wider class of theories which allows the defocusing of null rays and therefore geodesic completeness. We consolidate the conditions whereby null geodesic congruences may be made past complete, via the Raychaudhuri equation, with the requirement of a nonsingular Newtonian potential in an infinite derivative gravity theory. In doing so, we examine a class of Newtonian potentials characterized by an additional degree of freedom in the scalar propagator, which returns the familiar potential of General Relativity at large distances.

32. UV completion of the Starobinsky model, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and constraints on nonlocality

Abstract

In this paper, we build upon the successes of the ultraviolet (UV) completion of the Starobinsky model of inflation. This involves an extension of the Einstein-Hilbert term by an infinite covariant derivative theory of gravity which is quadratic in curvature. It has been shown that such a theory can potentially resolve the cosmological singularity for a flat, homogeneous and isotropic geometry, and now it can also provide a successful cosmological inflation model, which in the infrared regime matches all the predictions of the Starobinsky model of inflation. The aim of this paper is to show that the tensor-to-scalar ratio is modified by the scale of nonlocality, and in general a wider range of tensor-to-scalar ratios can be obtained in this class of model, which can put a lower bound on the scale of nonlocality for the first time as large as the O(10^14) GeV.

35. Black holes with a nonconstant kinetic term in degenerate higher-order scalar tensor theories.

Abstract

We investigate static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions in shift-symmetric quadratic-order degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We allow a nonconstant kinetic term X=gμν∂μϕ∂νϕ for the scalar field ϕ and assume that ϕ is, like the spacetime, a pure function of the radial coordinate r, namely ϕ=ϕ(r). First, we find analytic static and spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the so-called Class Ia DHOST theories, which include the quartic Horndeski theories as a subclass. We consider several explicit models in this class and apply our scheme to find the exact vacuum BH solutions. BH solutions obtained in our analysis are neither Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild (anti-) de Sitter. We show that a part of the BH solutions obtained in our analysis are free of ghost and Laplacian instabilities and are also mode stable against the odd-parity perturbations. Finally, we argue the case that the scalar field has a linear time dependence ϕ=qt+ψ(r) and show several simple examples of nontrivial BH solutions with a nonconstant kinetic term obtained analytically and numerically. Abstract

We show that most classes of shift-symmetric degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories which satisfy certain degeneracy conditions are not compatible with the conditions for the existence of exact black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field whose canonical kinetic term take a constant value. Combined with constraints from the propagation speed of gravitational waves, our results imply that cubic DHOST theories are strongly disfavored and that pure quadratic theories are likely to be the most viable class of DHOST theories. We find exact static and spherically symmetric (Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter) black hole solutions in all shift-symmetric higher-derivative scalar-tensor theories which contain up to cubic order terms of the second-order derivatives of the scalar field, especially the full class of Horndeski and Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi theories. After deriving the conditions for the coupling functions in the DHOST Lagrangian that allow the exact solutions, we clarify their compatibility with the degeneracy conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
