Search

Characterizing the physical conditions (density, temperature, ionization state, metallicity, etc) of the interstellar medium is critical to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies. Here we present a multi-line study of the interstellar medium in the host galaxy of a quasar at z~6.4, i.e., when the universe was 840 Myr old. This galaxy is one of the most active and massive objects emerging from the dark ages, and therefore represents a benchmark for models of the early formation of massive galaxies. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array to target an ensemble of tracers of ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, namely the fine-structure lines: [OIII] 88$\mu$m, [NII] 122$\mu$m, [CII] 158$\mu$m, and [CI] 370$\mu$m and the rotational transitions of CO(7-6), CO(15-14), CO(16-15), and CO(19-18); OH 163.1$\mu$m and 163.4$\mu$m; and H$_2$O 3(0,3)-2(1,2), 3(3,1)-4(0,4), 3(3,1)-3(2,2), 4(0,4)-3(1,3), 4(3,2)-4(2,3). All the targeted fine-structure lines are detected, as are half of the targeted molecular transitions. By combining the associated line luminosities, the constraints on the dust temperature from the underlying continuum emission, and predictions from photoionization models of the interstellar medium, we find that the ionized phase accounts for about one third of the total gaseous mass budget, and is responsible for half of the total [CII] emission. It is characterized by high density (n~180 cm$^{-3}$), typical of HII regions. The spectral energy distribution of the photoionizing radiation is comparable to that emitted by B-type stars. Star formation also appears to drive the excitation of the molecular medium. We find marginal evidence for outflow-related shocks in the dense molecular phase, but not in other gas phases. Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. We study the demographics of z ~ 6 broad-line quasars in the black hole (BH) mass-luminosity plane using a sample of more than 100 quasars at 5.7 < z < 6.5. These quasars have well quantified selection functions and nearly one third of them also have virial BH masses estimated from near-IR spectroscopy. We use forward modeling of parameterized intrinsic distributions of BH masses and Eddington ratios, and account for the sample flux limits and measurement uncertainties of the BH masses and luminosities. We find significant differences between the intrinsic and observed distributions of the quantities due to measurement uncertainties and sample flux limits. There is also marginal evidence that the virial BH masses are susceptible to a positive luminosity-dependent bias (BH mass is overestimated when luminosity is above the average), and that the mean Eddington ratio increases with BH mass. Our models provide reliable constraints on the z ~ 6 black hole mass function at M_BH > 10^8.5 M_Sun, with a median 1-sigma uncertainty of ~0.5 dex in abundance. The intrinsic Eddington ratio distribution of M_BH > 10^8.5 M_Sun quasars can be approximated by a mass-dependent Schechter model, with a broad peak around log(L_bol/L_Edd}) ~ -0.9. We also find that, at 4.5 < z < 6, the number densities of more massive BHs tend to decline more rapidly with increasing redshift, contrary to the trend at 2.5 < z < 4.5 reported previously., 21 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Koptelova & Hwang (K22) recently claimed a new quasar discovery at z = 7.46. After careful consideration of the publicly available data underlying K22's claim, we find that the observations were contaminated by a moving solar system object, likely a main-belt asteroid. In the absence of the contaminated photometry, there is no evidence for the nearby, persistent WISE source being a high-redshift object; in fact, a detection of the source in DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys z-band rules out a redshift z > 7.3. We present our findings as a cautionary tale of the dangers of passing asteroids for photometric selections.

The James Webb Space Telescope will have the power to characterize high-redshift quasars at z>6 with an unprecedented depth and spatial resolution. While the brightest quasars at such redshift (i.e., with bolometric luminosity L_bol> 10^46 erg/s) provide us with key information on the most extreme objects in the Universe, measuring the black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratios of fainter quasars with L_bol= 10^45-10^46 erg/s opens a path to understand the build-up of more normal BHs at z>6. In this paper, we show that the Illustris, TNG100, TNG300, Horizon-AGN, EAGLE, and SIMBA large-scale cosmological simulations do not agree on whether BHs at z>4 are overmassive or undermassive at fixed galaxy stellar mass with respect to the M_BH-M_star scaling relation at z=0 (BH mass offsets). Our conclusions are unchanged when using the local scaling relation produced by each simulation or empirical relations. We find that the BH mass offsets of the simulated faint quasar population at z>4, unlike those of bright quasars, represent the BH mass offsets of the entire BH population, for all the simulations. Thus, a population of faint quasars with L_bol= 10^45-10^46 erg/s observed by JWST can provide key constraints on the assembly of BHs at high redshift. Moreover, this will help constraining the high-redshift regime of cosmological simulations, including BH seeding, early growth, and co-evolution with the host galaxies. We investigate the molecular gas content of z~6 quasar host galaxies using the IRAM / Northern Extended Millimeter Array. We target the 3mm dust continuum, and the line emission from CO(6-5), CO(7-6), [CI]2-1 in 10 infra-red-luminous quasars that have been previously studied in their 1mm dust continuum and [CII] line emission. We detect CO(7-6) at various degrees of significance in all the targeted sources, thus doubling the number of such detections in z~6 quasars. The 3mm to 1mm flux density ratios are consistent with a modified black body spectrum with a dust temperature $T_{dust}$~47 K and an optical depth $\tau_{\nu}$=0.2 at the [CII] frequency. Our study provides us with four independent ways to estimate the molecular gas mass, $M_{H2}$, in the targeted quasars. This allows us to set constraints on various parameters used in the derivation of molecular gas mass estimates, such as the mass per luminosity ratios $\alpha_{CO}$ and $\alpha_{[CII]}$, the gas-to-dust ratio $\delta_{g/d}$, and the carbon abundance [C]/H2. Leveraging either on the dust, CO, [CI], or [CII] emission yields mass estimates of the entire sample in the range $M_{H2}$~$10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. We compare the observed luminosities of dust, [CII], [CI], and CO(7-6) with predictions from photo-dissociation and X-ray dominated regions. We find that the former provide better model fits to our data, assuming that the bulk of the emission arises from dense ($n_H>10^4$ cm$^{-3}$) clouds with a column density $N_{H}$~$10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, exposed to a radiation field with intensity $G_0$~$10^3$ (in Habing units). Our analysis reiterates the presence of massive reservoirs of molecular gas fueling star formation and nuclear accretion in $z$~6 quasar host galaxies. It also highlights the power of combined 3mm and 1mm observations for quantitative studies of the dense gas content in massive galaxies at cosmic dawn., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We present 0".035 resolution (~200 pc) imaging of the 158 um [CII] line and the underlying dust continuum of the z=6.9 quasar J234833.34-305410.0. The 18 h ALMA observations reveal extremely compact emission (diameter ~1 kpc) that is consistent with a simple, almost face-on, rotation-supported disk with a significant velocity dispersion of ~160 km/s. The gas mass in just the central 200 pc is ~4x10^9 M_sun, about a factor two higher than that of the central supermassive black hole. Consequently we do not resolve the black hole's sphere of influence, and find no kinematic signature of the central supermassive black hole. Kinematic modeling of the [CII] line shows that the dynamical mass at large radii is consistent with the gas mass, leaving little room for a significant mass contribution by stars and/or dark matter. The Toomre-Q parameter is less than unity throughout the disk, and thus is conducive to star formation, consistent with the high infrared luminosity of the system. The dust in the central region is optically thick, at a temperature >132 K. Using standard scaling relations of dust heating by star formation, this implies an unprecedented high star formation rate density of >10^4 M_sun / yr / kpc^2. Such a high number can still be explained with the Eddington limit for star formation under certain assumptions, but could also imply that the central supermassive black hole contributes to the heating of the dust in the central 110 pc., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near reionization using dark gaps in the Lyman-$\beta$ (Ly$\beta$) forest. With its lower optical depth, Ly$\beta$ offers a potentially more sensitive probe to any remaining neutral gas compared to commonly used Ly$\alpha$ line. We identify dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest using spectra of 42 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme. Approximately $40\%$ of these QSO spectra exhibit dark gaps longer than $10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ at $z\simeq5.8$. By comparing the results to predictions from simulations, we find that the data are broadly consistent both with models where fluctuations in the Ly$\alpha$ forest are caused solely by ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) fluctuations and with models that include large neutral hydrogen patches at $z, Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. In large-scale hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, the fate of massive galaxies is mainly dictated by the modeling of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). The amount of energy released by AGN feedback is proportional to the mass that has been accreted onto the BHs, but the exact sub-grid modeling of AGN feedback differs in all simulations. The $z=6.327$ quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 (hereafter J0100+2802) is believed to be powered by a black hole more massive than $10^{10}\ {\rm M}_\odot$, making it the most massive black hole known in the first billion years of the Universe. However, recent high-resolution ALMA imaging shows four structures at the location of this quasar, potentially implying that it is lensed with a magnification of $\mu\sim450$ and thus its black hole is significantly less massive. Furthermore, for the underlying distribution of magnifications of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars to produce such an extreme value, theoretical models predict that a larger number of quasars in this epoch should be lensed, implying further overestimates of early black hole masses. To provide an independent constraint on the possibility that J0100+2802 is lensed, we re-analyzed archival XMM-Newton observations of the quasar and compared the expected ratios of X-ray luminosity to rest-frame UV and IR luminosities. For both cases, J0100+2802's X-ray flux is consistent with the no-lensing scenario; while this could be explained by J0100+2802 being X-ray faint, we find it does not have the X-ray or optical spectral features expected for an X-ray faint quasar. Finally, we compare the overall distribution of X-ray fluxes for known, typical $z\gtrsim6$ quasars. We find a $3\sigma$ tension between the observed and predicted X-ray-to-UV flux ratios when adopting the magnification probability distribution required to produce a $\mu=450$ quasar., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

High-resolution imaging is crucial for exploring the origin and mechanism of radio emission in quasars, especially at high redshifts. We present 1.5 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the radio continuum emission from the radio-intermediate quasar (RIQ) J2242+0334 at z = 5.9. This object was previously detected at both 1.5 GHz and 3 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) as a point source. However, there is no clear detection in the VLBA images at both the full resolution of 10.7 mas × 4.5 mas (61.7 pc × 26.0 pc) and a tapered resolution of 26 mas × 21 mas (150 pc × 121 pc). This suggests that the radio emission from the quasar is diffuse on milliarcsecond scales with surface brightness fainter than the 3σ detection limit of 40.5 μJy beam−1 in the full-resolution image. The radio emission in the RIQ J2242+0334 is likely to be wind-like (i.e., diffuse) rather than in the form of collimated jets. This is different from the previous radio detections of the most luminous quasars at z ∼ 6 that are usually dominated by compact, high brightness temperature radio sources. Meanwhile, compared with RIQs at low redshifts, the case of J2242+0334 suggests that not all RIQs are beamed radio-quiet quasars. This optically faint RIQ provides an important and unique example to investigate the radio activity in the less powerful active galactic nuclei at the earliest cosmic epoch.

We present a multi-line survey of the interstellar medium (ISM) in two $z>6$ quasar (QSO) host galaxies, PJ231-20 ($z=6.59$) and PJ308-21 ($z=6.23$), and their two companion galaxies. Observations were carried out using the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We targeted eleven transitions including atomic fine structure lines (FSLs) and molecular lines: [NII]$_{\rm 205\mu m}$, [CI]$_{\rm 369\mu m}$, CO ($J_{\rm up} = 7, 10, 15, 16$), H$_2$O $3_{12}-2_{21}$, $3_{21}-3_{12}$, $3_{03}-2_{12}$, and the OH$_{\rm 163\mu m}$ doublet. The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum samples the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the respective dust emission. By combining this information with our earlier ALMA [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ observations, we explore the effects of star formation and black hole feedback on the galaxies' ISM using the CLOUDY radiative transfer models. We estimate dust masses, spectral indexes, IR luminosities, and star-formation rates from the FIR continuum. The analysis of the FSLs indicates that the [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ and [CI]$_{\rm 369\mu m}$ emission arises predominantly from the neutral medium in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We find that line deficits are in agreement with those of local luminous infrared galaxies. The CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), reveal significant high-$J$ CO excitation in both quasar hosts. Our CO SLED modeling of the quasar PJ231-20 shows that PDRs dominate the molecular mass and CO luminosities for $J_{\rm up}\le 7$, while the $J_{\rm up}\ge10$ CO emission is likely driven by X-ray dissociation regions produced by the active galactic nucleus (AGN) at the very center of the quasar host [abridged]., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We characterize the Ly$\alpha$ halo and absorption systems toward PSO J083+11, a unique $z=6.3401$ weak-line quasar, using Gemini/GNIRS, Magellan/FIRE, and VLT/MUSE data. Strong absorptions by hydrogen and several metal lines (e.g., CII, MgII, and OI) are discovered in the spectrum, which indicates the presence of: (i) a proximate sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ (sub-DLA) system at $z=6.314$ and (ii) a MgII absorber at $z=2.2305$. To describe the observed damping wing signal, we model the Ly$\alpha$ absorption with a combination of a sub-DLA with the neutral hydrogen column density of $\log N_\mathrm{HI} = 20.03 \pm 0.30$ cm$^{-2}$ and absorption from the intergalactic medium with a neutral fraction of around 10 percent. The sub-DLA toward PSO J083+11 has an abundance ratio of [C/O] $=-0.04 \pm 0.33$ and metallicity of [O/H] $=-2.19 \pm 0.44$, similar to those of low-redshift metal-poor DLAs. These measurements suggest that the sub-DLA might truncate PSO J083+11's proximity zone size and complicate the quasar lifetime measurement. However, this quasar shows no sign of a Ly$\alpha$ halo in the MUSE data cube, where the estimated $1\sigma$ limit of surface brightness is $2.76 \times 10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ at aperture size of 1 arcsecond, or equivalent to a Ly$\alpha$ luminosity of $\leq 43.46$ erg s$^{-1}$. This non-detection, while being only weak independent evidence on its own, is at least consistent with a young quasar scenario, as expected for a quasar with a short accretion timescale., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, and 1 table. We present a comparison of the interstellar medium traced by [CII] (ALMA), and ionised halo gas traced by Lya (MUSE), in and around QSO host galaxies at z~6. To date, 18 QSOs at this redshift have been studied with both MUSE and high-resolution ALMA imaging; of these, 8 objects display a Lya halo. Using datacubes matched in velocity resolution, we compare and contrast the spatial and kinematic information of the Lya halos and the host galaxies' [CII] (and dust-continuum) emission. We find that the Lya halos extend typically 3-30 times beyond the interstellar medium of the host galaxies. The majority of the Lya halos do not show ordered motion in their velocity fields, whereas most of the [CII] velocity fields do. In those cases where a velocity gradient can be measured in Lya, the kinematics do not align with those derived from the [CII] emission. This implies that the Lya emission is not tracing the outskirts of a large rotating disk that is a simple extension of the central galaxy seen in [CII] emission. It rather suggests that the kinematics of the halo gas are decoupled from those of the central galaxy. Given the scattering nature of Lya, these results need to be confirmed with JWST IFU observations that can constrain the halo kinematics further using the non-resonant Ha line., Published in ApJ

We quantify galaxy overdensities around three high-redshift quasars with known [CII] 158um companions: PJ231-20 (z=6.59), PJ308-21 (z=6.24) and J0305-3150 (z=6.61). Recent SCUBA2 imaging revealed the presence of 17 submillimeter galaxies (SMG) with sky separations $0.7'< \theta < 2.4'$ from these three quasars. We present ALMA Band 6 follow-up observations of these SCUBA2-selected SMGs to confirm their nature and redshift. We also search for continuum-undetected [CII] emitters in the ALMA pointings and make use of archival MUSE observations to search for Lyman-$\alpha$ Emitters (LAE) associated with the quasars. While most of the SCUBA2-selected sources are detected with ALMA in the continuum, no [CII] line emission could be detected, indicating that they are not at the quasar redshifts. Based on the serendipitous detection of CO 7-6 and [CI] emission lines, we find that four SMGs in the field of PJ231-20 are at z~2.4, which is coincident with the redshift of a Mg II absorber in the quasar rest-frame UV spectrum. We report the discovery of 2 LAEs within 6 quasars and suggest that only wide-field observations, such as MUSE, ALMA or JWST mosaics, can reveal a comprehensive picture of large-scale structure around quasars in the first billion years of the Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We explore the kinematics of 27 z~6 quasar host galaxies observed in [CII]-158 micron ([CII]) emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array at a resolution of ~0.25''. We find that nine of the galaxies show disturbed [CII] emission, either due to a close companion galaxy or recent merger. Ten galaxies have smooth velocity gradients consistent with the emission arising from a gaseous disk. The remaining eight quasar host galaxies show no velocity gradient, suggesting that the gas in these systems is dispersion-dominated. All galaxies show high velocity dispersions with a mean of 129+-10 km/s. To provide an estimate of the dynamical mass within twice the half-light radius of the quasar host galaxy, we model the kinematics of the [CII] emission line using our publicly available kinematic fitting code, qubefit. This results in a mean dynamical mass of 5.0+-0.8(+-3.5) x 10^10 Msun. Comparison between the dynamical mass and the mass of the supermassive black hole reveals that the sample falls above the locally derived bulge mass--black hole mass relation at 2.4sigma significance. This result is robust even if we account for the large systematic uncertainties. Using several different estimators for the molecular mass, we estimate a gas mass fraction of >10%, indicating gas makes up a large fraction of the baryonic mass of z~6 quasar host galaxies. Finally, we speculate that the large variety in [CII] kinematics is an indication that gas accretion onto z~6 super massive black holes is not caused by a single precipitating factor., 33 pages. X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using infrared and sub-millimeter observations. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray bolometric correction (the factor that converts from X-ray luminosity to bolometric luminosity) decreases with increasing $L_{\rm bol}$, and that the UV/optical-to-X-ray ratio, $\alpha_{\rm ox}$, strongly correlates with $L_{\rm 2500}$, and moderately correlates with $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ and blueshift of CIV emission lines. These correlations are consistent with those found in lower-$z$ quasars, indicating quasar accretion physics does not evolve with redshift. We also find that $L_{\rm IR}$ does not correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ in these luminous distant quasars, suggesting that the ratio of the SMBH growth rate and their host galaxy growth rate in these early luminous quasars are different from those of local galaxies. A joint spectral analysis of the X-ray detected $z>6.5$ quasars yields an average X-ray photon index of $ \Gamma=2.32^{+0.31}_{-0.30}$, steeper than that of low-$z$ quasars. By comparing it with the $\Gamma-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ relation, we conclude that the steepening of $\Gamma$ for quasars at $z>6.5$ is mainly driven by their higher Eddington ratios., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present deep (265 ks) Chandra X-ray observations of PSO J352.4034$-$15.3373, a quasar at z=5.831 that, with a radio-to-optical flux ratio of R>1000, is one of the radio-loudest quasars in the early universe and is the only quasar with observed extended radio jets of kpc-scale at $z \gtrsim 6$. Modeling the X-ray spectrum of the quasar with a power law, we find a best fit of $\Gamma = 1.99^{+0.29}_{-0.28}$, leading to an X-ray luminosity of $L_{2-10} = 1.26^{+0.45}_{-0.33} \times 10^{45}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ and an X-ray to UV brightness ratio of $\alpha_{\rm OX} = -1.36 \pm 0.11$. We identify a diffuse structure 50 kpc (${\sim}8^{\prime\prime}$) to the NW of the quasar along the jet axis that corresponds to a $3\sigma$ enhancement in the angular density of emission and can be ruled out as a background fluctuation with a probability of P=0.9985. While with few detected photons the spectral fit of the structure is uncertain, we find that it has a luminosity of $L_{2-10}\sim10^{44}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. These observations therefore potentially represent the most distant quasar jet yet seen in X-rays. We find no evidence for excess X-ray emission where the previously-reported radio jets are seen (which have an overall linear extent of $0.^{\prime\prime}28$), and a bright X-ray point source located along the jet axis to the SE is revealed by optical and NIR imaging to not be associated with the quasar., Comment: 16 pages, 7 Figures. We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington accretion since $z=30$. The Eddington ratio distribution peaks at $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim0.8$ and has a mean of 1.08, suggesting high accretion rates for these quasars. The CIV - MgII emission line velocity differences in our sample show an increase of CIV blueshift towards higher redshift, but the evolutionary trend observed from this sample is weaker than the previous results from smaller samples at similar redshift. The FeII/MgII flux ratios derived for these quasars up to $z=7.6$, compared with previous measurements at different redshifts, do not show any evidence of strong redshift evolution, suggesting metal-enriched environments in these quasars. Using this quasar sample, we create a quasar composite spectrum for $z>6.5$ quasars and find no significant redshift evolution of quasar broad emission lines and continuum slope, except for a blueshift of the CIV line. Our sample yields a strong broad absorption line quasar fraction of $\sim$24%, higher than the fractions in lower redshift quasar samples, although this could be affected by small sample statistics and selection effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 26 pages, 9 figures

The discovery of hundreds of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe powered by already grown SMBHs challenges our knowledge of SMBH formation. In particular, investigations of $z>6$ QSOs presenting notable properties can provide unique information on the physics of fast SMBH growth in the early universe. We present the results of follow-up observations of the $z=6.515$ radio-quiet QSO PSO167-13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy. The PSO167-13 system has been recently proposed to host the first heavily obscured X-ray source at high redshift. We observed PSO167-13 with Chandra/ACIS-S (177 ks), and obtained new spectroscopic observations (7.2 h) with Magellan/FIRE. No significant X-ray emission is detected from the PSO167-13 system, suggesting that the obscured X-ray source previously tentatively detected was either due to a strong background fluctuation or is highly variable. The upper limit (90% confidence level) on the X-ray emission of PSO167-13 ($L_{2-10\,\mathrm{keV}}6$ QSO. The ratio between the X-ray and UV luminosity of $\alpha_{ox}6$ times weaker than the expectation based on its UV luminosity. The new Magellan/FIRE spectrum of PSO167-13 is strongly affected by the unfavorable sky conditions, but the tentatively detected C IV and Mg II emission lines appear strongly blueshifted. The most plausible explanations for the X-ray weakness of PSO167-13 are intrinsic weakness or small-scale absorption by Compton-thick material. The possible strong blueshift of its emission lines hints at the presence of nuclear winds, which could be related to its X-ray weakness., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

The systematic targeting of extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around high-redshift quasars resulted in the discovery of rare and bright Enormous Ly$\alpha$ Nebulae (ELANe) associated with multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here initiate "a multiwavelength study of ELAN environments" (AMUSE$^2$) focusing on the ELAN around the $z\sim3$ quasar SDSS J1040+1020, a.k.a. the Fabulous ELAN. We report on VLT/HAWK-I, APEX/LABOCA, JCMT/SCUBA-2, SMA/850$\mu$m, ALMA/CO(5-4) and 2mm observations and compare them to previously published VLT/MUSE data. The continuum and line detections enable a first estimate of the star-formation rates, dust, stellar and molecular gas masses in four objects associated with the ELAN (three AGNs and one Ly$\alpha$ emitter), confirming that the quasar host is the most star-forming (${\rm SFR}\sim500$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) and massive galaxy ($M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) in the system, and thus can be assumed as central. All four embedded objects have similar molecular gas reservoirs ($M_{\rm H_2}\sim10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), resulting in short depletion time scales. This fact together with the estimated total dark-matter halo mass, $M_{\rm DM}=(0.8-2)\times10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, implies that this ELAN will evolve into a giant elliptical galaxy. Consistently, the constraint on the baryonic mass budget for the whole system indicates that the majority of baryons should reside in a massive warm-hot reservoir (up to $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$), needed to complete the baryons count. Additionally, we discuss signatures of gas infall on the compact objects as traced by Ly$\alpha$ radiative transfer effects and the evidence for the alignment between the satellites' spins and their directions to the central., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 4 appendix; submitted to ApJ

Radio sources at the highest redshifts can provide unique information on the first massive galaxies and black holes, the densest primordial environments, and the epoch of reionization. The number of astronomical objects identified at z>6 has increased dramatically over the last few years, but previously only three radio-loud (R2500>10) sources had been reported at z>6, with the most distant being a quasar at z=6.18. Here we present the discovery and characterization of P172+18, a radio-loud quasar at z=6.823. This source has an MgII-based black hole mass of ~3x10^8 Msun and is one of the fastest accreting quasars, consistent with super-Eddington accretion. The ionized region around the quasar is among the largest measured at these redshifts, implying an active phase longer than the average lifetime of the z>6 quasar population. From archival data, there is evidence that its 1.4 GHz emission has decreased by a factor of two over the last two decades. The quasar's radio spectrum between 1.4 and 3.0 GHz is steep (alpha=-1.31) and has a radio-loudness parameter R2500~90. A second steep radio source (alpha=-0.83) of comparable brightness to the quasar is only 23.1" away (~120 kpc at z=6.82; projection probability, submitted to ApJ on Nov 29, 2020; accepted on Jan 31, 2021. Broad line regions (BLRs) in high-redshift quasars provide crucial information of chemical enrichment in the early universe. Here we present a study of BLR metallicities in 33 quasars at redshift $5.7, Comment: ApJ, in press

The interactions between radio jets and the interstellar medium play a defining role for the co-evolution of central supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, but observational constraints on these feedback processes are still very limited at redshifts $z > 2$. We investigate the radio-loud quasar PSO J352.4034-15.3373 at $z \sim 6$ at the edge of the Epoch of Reionization. This quasar is among the most powerful radio emitters and the first one with direct evidence of extended radio jets ($\sim$1.6 kpc) at these high redshifts. We analyze NOEMA and ALMA millimeter data targeting the CO (6-5) and [CII] far-infrared emission lines, respectively, and the underlying continuum. The broad $440\pm 80$ km s$^{-1}$ and marginally resolved [CII] emission line yields a systemic redshift of $z\!=\!5.832 \pm 0.001$. Additionally, we report a strong 215 MHz radio continuum detection, $88\pm 7$ mJy, using the GMRT. This measurement significantly improves the constraints at the low-frequency end of the spectral energy distribution of this quasar. In contrast to what is typically observed in high-redshift radio-quiet quasars, we show that cold dust emission alone cannot reproduce the millimeter continuum measurements. This is evidence that the strong synchrotron emission from the quasar contributes substantially to the emission even at millimeter (far-infrared in the rest-frame) wavelengths. Due to an error in the analysis of the ALMA data, the [C II] line fluxes Fline in 6 out of the 13 analyzed quasars were underestimated, and thus also based the inferred star formation rate (SFR) on the [C II] emission. We corrected these values and show the updated measurements for the six affected quasars in the corrected Table 2. The dust continuum estimates and their derived quantities were not affected by the error. Additionally, the observed peak frequency of the [C II] emission line nobs and thus the inferred systemic redshifts of the quasars were mildly offset, causing a shift of Dnobs ? 0.02 GHz and - Dzsub mm ? 0.0005. The derived proximity zone sizes were hence affected byDRp ? 0.04 pMpc. All updated values are shown in the corrected Tables 2 and 4. These changes did not affect any of the conclusions of the paper, nor did the figures in the paper change in any noticeable way. Furthermore, since the publication of our paper the offset between the peak of the Mg II emission line and the systemic redshift derived from submillimeter emission lines estimated by Schindler et al. (2020) changed slightly in their published version compared to the preliminary value we had used. Thus we use the now published velocity offset of Dv(Mg II-[C II]) = - - 391+ km s- 455 256 1 to estimate the systemic redshifts of the three quasars in our sample, for which no submillimeter data are available and therefore the redshift estimate is based on the Mg II emission. This resulted in minor changes of Dz ? 0.001, which are updated in Table 4.

We present the discovery of PSO J083.8371+11.8482, a weak emission line quasar with extreme star formation rate at $z=6.3401$. This quasar was selected from Pan-STARRS1, UHS, and unWISE photometric data. Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy follow-up indicates a MgII-based black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH}=\left(2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\right)\times10^9~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $L_\mathrm{bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}=0.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, in line with actively accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at $z\gtrsim6$. HST imaging sets strong constraint on lens-boosting, showing no relevant effect on the apparent emission. The quasar is also observed as a pure point-source with no additional emission component. The broad line region (BLR) emission is intrinsically weak and not likely caused by an intervening absorber. We found rest-frame equivalent widths of EW(Ly$\alpha$+NV) $=5.7\pm0.7$ Angstrom, EW(CIV) $\leq5.8$ Angstrom (3-sigma upper limit), and EW(MgII) $=8.7\pm0.7$ Angstrom. A small proximity zone size ($R_\mathrm{p}=1.2\pm0.4$ pMpc) indicates a lifetime of only $t_\mathrm{Q}=10^{3.4\pm0.7}$ years from the last quasar phase ignition. ALMA shows extended [CII] emission with a mild velocity gradient. The inferred far-infrared luminosity ($L_\mathrm{FIR}=(1.2\pm0.1)\times10^{13}\,L_\odot$) is one of the highest among all known quasar hosts at $z\gtrsim6$. Dust and [CII] emissions put a constraint on the star formation rate of SFR $=900-4900~M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$, similar to that of hyper-luminous infrared galaxy. Considering the observed quasar lifetime and BLR formation timescale, the weak-line profile in the quasar spectrum is most likely caused by a BLR which is not yet fully formed rather than continuum boosting by gravitational lensing or a soft continuum due to super-Eddington accretion., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

In a multi-wavelength survey of $13$ quasars at $5.8\lesssim z\lesssim6.5$, that were pre-selected to be potentially young, we find five objects with extremely small proximity zone sizes that may imply UV-luminous quasar lifetimes of $\lesssim 100,000$ years. Proximity zones are regions of enhanced transmitted flux in the vicinity of the quasars that are sensitive to the quasars' lifetimes because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to their radiation. We combine sub-mm observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), as well as deep optical and near-infrared spectra from medium-resolution spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and on the Keck telescopes, in order to identify and characterize these new young quasars, which provide valuable clues about the accretion behavior of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early universe, and pose challenges on current black hole formation models to explain the rapid formation of billion solar mass black holes. We measure the quasars' systemic redshifts, black hole masses, Eddington ratios, emission line luminosities, and star formation rates of their host galaxies. Combined with previous results we estimate the fraction of young objects within the high-redshift quasar population at large to be $5\%\lesssim f_{\rm young}\lesssim 10\%$. One of the young objects, PSO J158-14, shows a very bright dust continuum flux ($F_{\rm cont}=3.46\pm 0.02\,\rm mJy$), indicating a highly star-bursting host galaxy with a star formation rate of approximately $1420\,M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near the end of reionization using “dark gaps” in the Lyα forest. Using spectra of 55 QSOs at z em > 5.5, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme, we identify gaps in the Lyα forest where the transmission averaged over 1 comoving h −1 Mpc bins falls below 5%. Nine ultralong (L > 80 h −1 Mpc) dark gaps are identified at z < 6. In addition, we quantify the fraction of QSO spectra exhibiting gaps longer than 30 h −1 Mpc, F 30, as a function of redshift. We measure F 30 ≃ 0.9, 0.6, and 0.15 at z = 6.0, 5.8, and 5.6, respectively, with the last of these long dark gaps persisting down to z ≃5.3. Comparing our results with predictions from hydrodynamical simulations, we find that the data are consistent with models wherein reionization extends significantly below redshift six. Models wherein the IGM is essentially fully reionized that retain large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing UV background at z ≲6 are also potentially consistent with the data. Overall, our results suggest that signatures of reionization in the form of islands of neutral hydrogen and/or large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing background remain present in the IGM until at least z ≃ 5.3.

We report the discovery of a luminous quasar, J1007+2115 at $z=7.515$ ("P\={o}niu\={a}'ena"), from our wide-field reionization-era quasar survey. J1007+2115 is the second quasar now known at $z>7.5$, deep into the reionization epoch. The quasar is powered by a $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH), based on its broad MgII emission-line profile from Gemini and Keck near-IR spectroscopy. The SMBH in J1007+2115 is twice as massive as that in quasar J1342+0928 at $z=7.54$, the current quasar redshift record holder. The existence of such a massive SMBH just 700 million years after the Big Bang significantly challenges models of the earliest SMBH growth. Model assumptions of Eddington-limited accretion and a radiative efficiency of 0.1 require a seed black hole of $\gtrsim 10^{4}$ $M_{\odot}$ at $z=30$. This requirement suggests either a massive black hole seed as a result of direct collapse or earlier periods of rapid black hole growth with hyper-Eddington accretion and/or a low radiative efficiency. We measure the damping wing signature imprinted by neutral hydrogen absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on J1007+2115's Ly$\alpha$ line profile, and find that it is weaker than that of J1342+0928 and two other $z\gtrsim7$ quasars. We estimate an IGM volume-averaged neutral fraction $\langle x\rm_{HI}\rangle=0.39^{+0.22}_{-0.13}$. This range of values suggests a patchy reionization history toward different IGM sightlines. We detect the 158 $\mu$m [C II] emission line in J1007+2115 with ALMA; this line centroid yields a systemic redshift of $z=7.5149\pm0.0004$ and indicates a star formation rate of $\sim210$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ in its host galaxy., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press
