With the global situation in which more and more children are displaced, direct intergenerational transmission is broken, suspended, or complicated and made incoherent, and “things of concern” may be radically different for policymakers, for teachers, students, or their parents. Even the concept of the child as one who needs to be educated before they start participating in adult life cannot be taken for granted in this context. What needs and what can be passed on — and what is worth passing in this context? How do we conceptualize education to encounter newcomers in their realities of being both native and strange, inmate and neighbour or alien, temporal and spatial — and how do we address them all as worth of address? These questions will shine through the authors'reflections on crisis, education, and migration in the complex context of war, climatic catastrophe, displacement, hospitality and institutionalised hostility. Die Ursachen und Begleitumstände dieser Veränderung, z. B. die Einführung der Bildungsstandards und weitreichende Testpraxis, werden analysiert und einer Kritik unterzogen.

This book, the first of two volumes, focuses on the conceptualization of Indigenous Knowledge and Curriculum, Ethiopian/African Philosophy and the possibilities of Indigenization/Africanization of African Education. Its main purpose is to overview the practices of traditional/indigenous education of Africa with emphasis on Ethiopia's experience connected with curriculum development, and make possible suggestions that could contribute to curriculum development endeavors of Africa. The cultural heritage of the majority African countries is either ignored or not adequately considered in the formulation of educational policies and curricula in their modern African educational systems. Hence, a new path and paradigm shift are needed. To this end, considering Africa's outstanding IK with useful experiences of other countries in education particularly in the curriculum is critical to bring the required change.

Die Rezeption beschränkt sich häufig auf spezifische Einsätze rund um die gemeinsam mit Chantal Mouffe in Hegemonie und radikale Demokratie entwickelte und an Antonio Gramsci ansetzende Hegemonietheorie. Dass Laclaus Perspektiven jedoch eine Vielzahl produktiver Anschlüsse und Irritationen für unterschiedliche pädagogische Frage- und Problemstellungen beinhalten, verdeutlichen die hier versammelten Beiträge rund um transdisziplinäre Spannungsverhältnisse von Politik, Bildung und Pädagogik, von Artikulation und Repräsentation, von Ontologie und Identität oder im Kontext aktueller Sichtweisen auf Inklusion, Solidarität, Migration, pädagogische Beziehungen und Professionalität.

As a follow up to Pedagogical Encounters in the Post-Anthropocene, Volume I, this book addresses three major areas in response to the post-Anthropocene: Technology, Neurology, Quantum. Each of these areas is broadly addressed in relation to the concerns that have arisen both theoretically and educationally. As in Volume I, the author terms these to be encounters as each area presents a particular problematic when addressing the phase change that the planet is undergoing where the anthropogenic labour of global humanity is contributing to climate change, endangering our very existence. Technology in education has been a significant development. There is a concerted effort to review this development placing stress on the rise of learning machines and algorithms. In the second encounter the vast literature on neurology is addressed, especially neurodiversity and the various symptoms that have emerged in the post-Anthropocene era. The last section reviews issues related to quantum theory as this is fundamental to tensions between physics and metaphysics. The volume concludes with the author's own pedagogical proposal for the future.

This book analyses educational theory in order to offer an alternative view of the history of education in modernity. This book provides an overview of the Theory of Practice Architectures (TPA), and the associated Theory of Ecology of Practices, in a manner accessible for a broader audience. The authors are part of the authorial team that developed the Theory of Practice Architectures from a strong empirical base, with its initial publication in'Changing Practices, Changing Education'(Kemmis et al., Springer, 2014). This book follows on from that publication with a singluar focus on the Theory of Practice Architectures, and shows how it can be used as a theoretical framework for a range of empirical research projects. It first outlines and describes both the Theory of Practice Architectures and the Theory of Ecology of Practices, illustrating them with a range of relevant practical examples. Then, it focuses explicitly on designing and undertaking empirical research, analyzing data and reporting findings using the Theory of Practice Architectures. In this way, this book shows specifically and overtly explicate ways that research can be designed, and how data can be collected and analyzed, drawing on the Theory of Practice Architectures as a foundational framework. It also showcases a range of specific examples to allow readers to see the ideas as they have been employed in practice.

Das Buch beschreibt das geisteswissenschaftliche Universitätsseminar als eine besondere Form der unterrichtlichen Ordnung, welche sich in ihren Wertgrundlagen, institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen und Interaktionspraktiken von anderen Unterrichtsordnungen unterscheidet. Es werden unterschiedliche Einschätzungen zum Status des Universitätsseminars als unterrichtliche Ordnung auf Basis bisheriger theoretischer und empirischer Arbeiten nachgezeichnet. Auf diesem Weg wird die Grundlage für eine Rekonstruktion fachlicher Lehr-Lern-Interaktionen im literaturwissenschaftlichen Universitätsseminar gelegt. Dazu wird eine theoretische Deutung des Universitätsseminars als Sozialisationsraum vorgenommen und mit bislang erfolgten empirischen Beschreibungen von Lehr-Lern-Interaktionen im Rahmen der Universität konfrontiert. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der methodischen Reflexion der jeweiligen Bestimmungen des Universitätsseminars und insbesondere auf der Frage nach dem Verhältnis von „Idee“ und „Empirie“.

The author reviews this development in the first section where there has been a particular emphasis placed on childhood education. In the second section he turns to the pedagogical theories that are attempting to overcome this same divide in environmental and science education. The last section attempts to bring into the conversation the vast literature on Indigeneity and their attempts to revise traditional education to meet these extraordinary times.

Was sind die Ziele moralischer Bildung? Angesichts aktueller moralischer Herausforderungen, so ein naheliegender Gedanke, müssen wir zukünftigen Generationen gezielt vermitteln, dass einige Rede- und Verhaltensweisen schlichtweg moralisch problematisch sind, und dass es spezifische moralische Prinzipien gibt, die es zu berücksichtigen gilt. Gleichzeitig provoziert eine solche Überlegung unmittelbar die Sorge, dass es sich bei der Vermittlung spezifischer moralischer Ansichten um eine Form illegitimer Bevormundung handeln würde – sollte es bei moralischer Bildung nicht vielmehr um die Befähigung zur eigenständigen Reflexion moralischer Problemzusammenhänge gehen? Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Spannung zwischen dem Wunsch, klar für konkrete Werte einzustehen und der Sorge, Heranwachsende in ihrem Recht auf eine individuelle Urteilsbildung einzuschränken, möchte ich die Idee diskutieren, dass es bei moralischer Bildung um die gezielte Vermittlung moralischen Wissens gehen sollte – also Wissen darüber, was moralisch richtig und was moralisch falsch ist. Obwohl es sich hierbei um eine durchaus kontroverse Idee handelt, verdient Sie vor dem Hintergrund aktueller moralischer Herausforderungen meiner Meinung nach dringend einer genaueren Betrachtung.

This book focuses on narrative forms of research and inquiry in music education. As narrative approaches gain momentum, questions of methodology become salient. This research anthology highlights a diverse array of narrative methodologies and offers strategies for new researchers. Dies betrifft zum einen die Innenperspektive der Fachdidaktik selbst. Neben den klassischen Arbeitsfeldern auf der theoretisch-konzeptionellen, der methodisch-praktischen und der empirisch-kritischen Ebene entstehen immer neue Teilbereiche der Philosophiedidaktik. Gleichzeitig wachsen von Seiten der Fachphilosophie sowohl Wertschätzung als auch Erwartungshaltung bezüglich der Fachdidaktik. This book provides a unique critical perspective on the importance of values to school culture. Drawing on research in Quaker schools in England, and the perspectives of students, it challenges the idea that school evaluation should be primarily based on measurable outcomes and argues that values matter more to learning than is often acknowledged. Furthermore, the book provides important insights on how to research schools that claim to hold similar values, from multi-academy chains to other so-called faith schools. Throughout the text, the author underscores the importance of values to students'dispositions, in order to engage with the learning opportunities their schools provide. As the globalized early learning agenda drives more children to attend ECCE institutions, these institutions increasingly employ the concept of home through their curriculum and daily operations by attempting to foster a homelike environment or by incorporating items from children's homes into play. Sie steht in der Tradition der Philosophie Immanuel Kants (1724-1804) und Jakob Friedrich Fries'(1773-1843). Der Nelsonkreis hält dem Vergleich mit dem Wiener Kreis stand. Die Anhänger des Nelsonkreises kamen u.a. aus der Mathematik, Physik, Philosophie, Psychologie, Theologie und den Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Über sie wirkte die kantisch-friessche Philosophie teilweise in andere Disziplinen hinein. Zu nennen sind beispielsweise der Psychiater und Psychologe Arthur Kronfeld (1846-1941), der Biochemiker und Nobelpreisträger Otto Meyerhof (1884-1951), der Mathematiker Gerhard Hessenberg (1874-1925), die Philosophin und Physikerin Grete Henry-Hermann (1901-1984), die Pädagogin MinnaSpecht (1879-1961), der Wirtschaftswissenschaftler Alexander Rüstow (1885-1963), der Theologe Rudolf Otto (1869-1937), der Soziologe Franz Oppenheimer (1864-1943) und der Sozialwissenschaftler Gerhard Weisser (1898-1989).Die Ausstrahlung des Nelsonkreises auf verschiedene Disziplinen sowie dessen Geschichte sind bislang noch nicht umfassend untersucht worden. Diese Forschungslücke soll mit dem vorliegenden Band geschlossen werden. Der systematische Forschungsband bietet zudem eine Einführung und einen Überblick zur Philosophie Leonard Nelsons.

The book begins with a detailed examination of the history of civics and citizenship education from a variety of perspectives and in different locations. It recognizes and documents how the place and importance of civics and citizenship education has changed over the last century and how this has been realized in various educational initiatives. This book interrogates the ways in which “end of the world” thinking has come to define and delimit pedagogical approaches in Anthropocene times. Chapters unfold through a series of speculative studies of educational futurity—sustainable futures, energy futures, working futures—each of which is positioned as an experimental site for probing the limits of pedagogical unthinkability so as to speculate, through concept creation, on unthought educational trajectories. Specifically, the book is oriented towards the creation of pedagogical concepts that work to problematize and resituate questions of educational futurity in relation to the planetary realities raised by today's pressing extinction events. It is from this experimentation that a weird pedagogy emerges, that is, an experimental pedagogical anti-model, a speculative program for the unprogrammable that seeks to counter-actualize potentials of and for unthinking pedagogy at the (so-called) end of the world.

This book examines the role of teaching within public education. It critiques its function in today's educational policies and theories and establishes an alternative way of understanding teaching. It explores teaching from within a Sophist tradition of educational practice and thought.The first part of the book discusses the vital link between public education and democracy, the shifts in schooling's role in fostering competition and comparisons at the cost of social responsibility and democratisation. It identifies the driving force of those shifts as forces of aggression and destruction, central to a neoliberal ideology. The second part of the book argues for a practice of Sophistical teaching rather than Socratic teaching. It explores in-depth what it could mean to be teaching in an up-to-date sophist tradition of educational thought and practice.The book also includes insights for teaching to counter aggressive forces of nationalism, racism, and late capitalism's violence and the escalating climate crisis. Readers will be able to understand teaching within educational thought and precisely how different teaching forms can contribute to education as democratisation.

This book analyzes the changing portrayal of GDR literature in German Gymnasium textbooks 1985-2015. Addressing the need for textbook research to broaden its focus from GDR history to GDR literature, the author presents case studies of well-known GDR authors (Bertolt Brecht, Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers, Wolf Biermann, and Christa Wolf), each examining a particular aspect of the societal discourse about GDR literature and the tension between (literary) text and (historical) context. Taken together, the case studies reveal the frequently underestimated power of ideology in literature textbooks. They also show how attempts to package these authors into simplified categories ultimately reveal the profound complexities of the GDR literary legacy. By examining the clear tension between literature and politics in textbooks and curricula, the author demonstrates how ideological messages are transmitted in all textbooks, as well as the importance of attending to overt and covert ideology.

This book represents the very first, so far unpublished, translation of Piotr Galperin's (1902-1988) dissertation, defended in 1938 during his employment in the All-Ukrainian Psycho-Neurological Academy (AUPA) in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In his candidate dissertation Galperin examined the differences in tool use between humans and animals and argued that there was a fundamental difference between tools developed and used by humans and the auxiliary means used by animals. Galperin showed that human use of tools totally differs from the way tools are utilised by animals as ‘an extension'of their limbs. He suggested that tools created and used by humans encapsulate cultural and historical experience developed in human practices which have to be mastered. Human engagement with these tools reorganise the existing and enhance the development of new psychological functions and that human consciousness originates and develops in the external tool-mediated activities. The development of new psychological functions stimulates the systemic and meaningful organisation of human consciousness. In addition, as opposed to animal mind, human consciousness undergoes developmental transformations initiated in tools- and speech-mediated activities.Galperin's research reveals the unity of the external tool-mediated and the internal psychological activity of humans. These findings are influential as they adopted the foundations of the theory of Vygotsky and extended them without changing the essence of Vygotsky's legacy. Galperin's dissertation can be considered as a missing jig-saw puzzle which connects the legacy of Vygotsky, the contribution of Leontiev and their followers who worked in the cultural-historical and activity traditions. This translation of the dissertation in English makes it available for the cultural-historical scholars in the West and provides insights into the invaluable contributions of Piotr Galperin.
