G4CMP simulates phonon and charge transport in cryogenic semiconductor crystals using the Geant4 toolkit. The transport code is capable of simulating the propagation of acoustic phonons as well as electron and hole charge carriers. Processes for anisotropic phonon propagation, oblique charge-carrier propagation, and phonon emission by accelerated charge carriers are included. The simulation reproduces theoretical predictions and experimental observations such as phonon caustics, heat-pulse propagation times, and mean charge-carrier drift velocities. In addition to presenting the physics and features supported by G4CMP, this report outlines example applications from the dark matter and quantum information science communities. These communities are applying G4CMP to model and design devices for which the energy transported by phonons and charge carriers is germane to the performance of superconducting instruments and circuits placed on silicon and germanium substrates. We report on the strong coupling between a metallic ferromagnetic Fe75Co25 thin film patterned element and a range of superconducting Nb half-wavelength co-planar waveguide (CPW) resonators. By varying the volume of the ferromagnet we demonstrate that the coupling rate scales linearly with the square root of the number of spins and achieve a coupling rate over 700 MHz, approaching the ultrastrong coupling regime. Experiments varying the center conductor width while maintaining constant magnetic volume verify that decreasing the center conductor width increases coupling and cooperativity. Our results show that the frequency dependence of the coupling rate is linear with the fundamental and higher order odd harmonics of the CPW, but with differing efficiencies. The results show promise for scaling planar superconducting resonator/magnetic hybrid systems to smaller dimensions., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Terahertz near fields of gold metamaterials resonant at a frequency of $0.88\,\rm THz$ allow us to enter an extreme limit of non-perturbative ultrafast THz electronics: Fields reaching a ponderomotive energy in the keV range are exploited to drive nondestructive, quasi-static interband tunneling and impact ionization in undoped bulk GaAs, injecting electron-hole plasmas with densities in excess of $10^{19}\,\rm cm^{-3}$. This process causes bright luminescence at energies up to $0.5\,\rm eV$ above the band gap and induces a complete switch-off of the metamaterial resonance accompanied by self-amplitude modulation of transmitted few-cycle THz transients. Our results pave the way towards highly nonlinear THz optics and optoelectronic nanocircuitry with sub-picosecond switching times., Comment: Published in Physical Review Letters

We describe operation of the CESR-TA vertical beam size monitor (xBSM) with $e^\pm$ beams with $E_{\rm b}$=4 GeV. The xBSM measures vertical beam size by imaging synchrotron radiation x-rays through an optical element onto a detector array of 32 InGaAs photodiodes with 50 $\mu$m pitch. The device has previously been successfully used to measure vertical beam sizes of 10-100 $\mu$m on a bunch-by-bunch, turn-by-turn basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim$2 GeV and source magnetic fields below 2.8 kG, for which the detector required calibration for incident x-rays of 1-5 keV. At $E_{\rm b}=4.0$ GeV and $B$=4.5 kG, however, the incident synchrotron radiation spectrum extends to $\sim$20 keV, requiring calibration of detector response in that regime. Such a calibration is described and then used to analyze data taken with several different thicknesses of filters in front of the detector. We obtain a relative precision of better than 4% on beam size measurement from 15-100 $\mu$m over several different ranges of x-ray energy, including both 1-12 keV and 6-17 keV. The response of an identical detector, but tilted vertically by 60$^\circ$ in order to increase magnfication without a longer beamline, is measured and shown to improve x-ray detection above 4 keV without compromising sensitivity to beam size. We describe the design and performance of optical elements for an x-ray beam size monitor (xBSM), a device measuring $e^+$ and $e^-$ beam sizes in the CESR-TA storage ring. The device can measure vertical beam sizes of $10-100~\mu$m on a turn-by-turn, bunch-by-bunch basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim2-5~$GeV. X-rays produced by a hard-bend magnet pass through a single- or multiple-slit (coded aperture) optical element onto a detector. The coded aperture slit pattern and thickness of masking material forming that pattern can both be tuned for optimal resolving power. We stabilize a chosen radiofrequency beat note between two optical fields derived from the same mode-locked laser pulse train, in order to coherently manipulate quantum information. This scheme does not require access or active stabilization of the laser repetition rate. We implement and characterize this external lock, in the context of two-photon stimulated Raman transitions between the hyperfine ground states of trapped 171-Yb+ quantum bits.

We describe the construction and operation of an x-ray beam size monitor (xBSM), a device measuring $e^+$ and $e^-$ beam sizes in the CESR-TA storage ring using synchrotron radiation. The device can measure vertical beam sizes of $10-100~\mu$m on a turn-by-turn, bunch-by-bunch basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim2~$GeV. At such beam energies the xBSM images x-rays of $\epsilon\approx$1-10$~$keV ($\lambda\approx 0.1-1$ nm) that emerge from a hard-bend magnet through a single- or multiple-slit (coded aperture) optical element onto an array of 32 InGaAs photodiodes with 50$~\mu$m pitch. Beamlines and detectors are entirely in-vacuum, enabling single-shot beam size measurement down to below 0.1$~$mA ($2.5\times10^9$ particles) per bunch and inter-bunch spacing of as little as 4$~$ns. At $E_{\rm b}=2.1 $GeV, systematic precision of $\sim 1~\mu$m is achieved for a beam size of $\sim12~\mu$m; this is expected to scale as $\propto 1/\sigma_{\rm b}$ and $\propto 1/E_{\rm b}$. Achieving this precision requires comprehensive alignment and calibration of the detector, optical elements, and x-ray beam. Frustration, or the competition between interacting components of a network, is often responsible for the complexity of many body systems, from social and neural networks to protein folding and magnetism. In quantum magnetic systems, frustration arises naturally from competing spin-spin interactions given by the geometry of the spin lattice or by the presence of long-range antiferromagnetic couplings. Frustrated magnetism is a hallmark of poorly understood systems such as quantum spin liquids, spin glasses and spin ices, whose ground states are massively degenerate and can carry high degrees of quantum entanglement. The controlled study of frustrated magnetism in materials is hampered by short dynamical time scales and the presence of impurities, while numerical modeling is generally intractable when dealing with dynamics beyond N~30 particles. Alternatively, a quantum simulator can be exploited to directly engineer prescribed frustrated interactions between controlled quantum systems, and several small-scale experiments have moved in this direction. In this article, we perform a quantum simulation of a long-range antiferromagnetic quantum Ising model with a transverse field, on a crystal of up to N = 16 trapped Yb+ atoms. We directly control the amount of frustration by continuously tuning the range of interaction and directly measure spin correlation functions and their dynamics through spatially-resolved spin detection. We find a pronounced dependence of the magnetic order on the amount of frustration, and extract signatures of quantum coherence in the resulting phases.

Applications in quantum information processing and photon detectors are stimulating a race to produce the highest possible quality factor on-chip superconducting microwave resonators. We have tested the surface-dominated loss hypothesis by systematically studying the role of geometrical parameters on the internal quality factors of compact resonators patterned in Nb on sapphire. Their single-photon internal quality factors were found to increase with the distance between capacitor fingers, the width of the capacitor fingers, and the impedance of the resonator. Quality factors were improved from 210,000 to 500,000 at T = 200 mK. All of these results are consistent with our starting hypothesis., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

A quantum simulator is a well controlled quantum system that can simulate the behavior of another quantum system which may require exponentially large classical computing resources to understand otherwise. In the 1980s, Feynman proposed the use of quantum logic gates on a standard controllable quantum system to efficiently simulate the behavior of a model Hamiltonian. Recent experiments using trapped ions and neutral atoms have realized quantum simulation of Ising model in presence of external magnetic fields, and showed almost arbitrary control in generating non-trivial Ising coupling patterns. Here we use laser-cooled trapped 171-Yb+ ions to simulate the emergence of magnetism in a system of interacting spins by implementing a fully-connected non-uniform ferromagnetic Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. To link this quantum simulation to condensed matter physics, we measure scalable correlation functions and order parameters appropriate for the description of larger systems, such as various moments of the magnetization. By increasing the Ising coupling strengths compared with the external field, the crossover from paramagnetism to ferromagnetic order sharpens as the system is scaled up from N = 2 to 9 trapped ion spins. This points toward the onset of a quantum phase transition that should become infinitely sharp as the system approaches the macroscopic scale. We compare the measured ground state order to theory, which may become intractable for non-uniform Ising couplings as the number of spins grows beyond 20- 30 and even NP complete for a fully-connected frustrated Ising model, making this experiment an important benchmark for large-scale quantum simulation., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We perform a quantum simulation of the Ising model with a transverse field using a collection of three trapped atomic ion spins. By adiabatically manipulating the Hamiltonian, we directly probe the ground state for a wide range of fields and form of the Ising couplings, leading to a phase diagram of magnetic order in this microscopic system. The technique is scalable to much larger numbers of trapped ion spins, where phase transitions approaching the thermodynamic limit can be studied in cases where theory becomes intractable., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We experimentally investigate the role of localization on the adiabaticity of loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into a one-dimensional optical potential comprised of a shallow primary lattice plus one or two perturbing lattice(s) of incommensurate period. We find that even a very weak perturbation causes dramatic changes in the momentum distribution and makes adiabatic loading of the combined lattice much more difficult than for a single period lattice.
