Search

A "pulsar timing array" (PTA), in which observations of a large sample of pulsars spread across the celestial sphere are combined, allows investigation of "global" phenomena such as a background of gravitational waves or instabilities in atomic timescales that produce correlated timing residuals in the pulsars of the array. The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) is an implementation of the PTA concept based on observations with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. A sample of 20 millisecond pulsars is being observed at three radio-frequency bands, 50cm (~700 MHz), 20cm (~1400 MHz) and 10cm (~3100 MHz), with observations at intervals of 2 - 3 weeks. Regular observations commenced in early 2005. This paper describes the systems used for the PPTA observations and data processing, including calibration and timing analysis. The strategy behind the choice of pulsars, observing parameters and analysis methods is discussed. Results are presented for PPTA data in the three bands taken between 2005 March and 2011 March. For ten of the 20 pulsars, rms timing residuals are less than 1 microsec for the best band after fitting for pulse frequency and its first time derivative. Significant "red" timing noise is detected in about half of the sample. We discuss the implications of these results on future projects including the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA) and a PTA based on the Square Kilometre Array. High-precision pulsar timing relies on a solar-system ephemeris in order to convert times of arrival (TOAs) of pulses measured at an observatory to the solar system barycenter. Any error in the conversion to the barycentric TOAs leads to a systematic variation in the observed timing residuals; specifically, an incorrect planetary mass leads to a predominantly sinusoidal variation having a period and phase associated with the planet's orbital motion about the Sun. By using an array of pulsars (PSRs J0437-4715, J1744-1134, J1857+0943, J1909-3744), the masses of the planetary systems from Mercury to Saturn have been determined. These masses are consistent with the best-known masses determined by spacecraft observations, with the mass of the Jovian system, 9.547921(2)E-4 Msun, being significantly more accurate than the mass determined from the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft, and consistent with but less accurate than the value from the Galileo spacecraft. While spacecraft are likely to produce the most accurate measurements for individual solar system bodies, the pulsar technique is sensitive to planetary system masses and has the potential to provide the most accurate values of these masses for some planets., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Since 2004 we have been carrying out a pulsar survey of the Cygnus region with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at a frequency of 328 MHz. The survey pioneered a novel interferometric observing mode, termed 8gr8 (eight-grate), whereby multiple simultaneous digital beams provide high sensitivity over a large field of view. Since the Cygnus region is known to contain OB associations, it is likely that pulsars are formed here. Simulations have shown that this survey could detect 70 pulsars, which would increase our understanding of the radio pulsar population in this region. We also aim to expand the known population of intermittent and rotating radio transient (RRAT)-like pulsars. In this paper we describe our methods of observation, processing and data analysis, and we present the first results. Our observing method exploits the way a regularly spaced, linear array of telescopes yields a corresponding regularly spaced series of so-called ``grating'' beams on the sky. By simultaneously forming a modest number (eight) of offset digital beams, we can utilize the entire field of view of each WSRT dish, but retain the coherently summed sensitivity of the entire array. For the processing we performed a large number of trial combinations of period and dispersion measure (DM) using a computer cluster. In the first processing cycle of the WSRT 8gr8 Cygnus Survey, we have discovered three radio pulsars, with spin periods of 1.657, 1.099 and 0.445 seconds. These pulsars have been observed on a regular basis since their discovery, both in a special follow-up programme as well as in the regular timing programme. A large sample of about two hundred pulsars have been observed to study their subpulse modulation at an observing wavelength of (when achievable) both 21 and 92 cm using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. For 57 pulsars drifting subpulses are discovered for the first time and are confirmed for many others. This leads to the conclusion that it could well be that the drifting subpulse mechanism is an intrinsic property of the emission mechanism itself, although for some pulsars it is difficult or impossible to detect. It appears that the youngest pulsars have the most disordered subpulses and the subpulses become more and more organized into drifting subpulses as the pulsar ages. Drifting subpulses are in general found at both frequencies and the measured values of P3 at the two frequencies are highly correlated, showing the broadband nature of this phenomenon. Also the modulation indices measured at the two frequencies are clearly correlated, although at 92 cm they are on average possibly higher. The correlations with the modulation indices are argued to be consistent with the picture in which the radio emission is composed out of a drifting subpulse signal plus a quasi-steady signal which becomes, on average, stronger at high observing frequencies. Analysis of ten years of high-precision timing data on the millisecond pulsar PSR J0437-4715 has resulted in a model-independent kinematic distance based on an apparent orbital period derivative, Pbdot, determined at the 1.5% level of precision (Dk = 157.0 +/- 2.4 pc), making it one of the most accurate stellar distance estimates published to date. The discrepancy between this measurement and a previously published parallax distance estimate is attributed to errors in the DE200 Solar System ephemerides. The precise measurement of Pbdot allows a limit on the variation of Newton's gravitational constant, |Gdot/G| < 23 x 10^{-12} 1/yr. We also constrain any anomalous acceleration along the line of sight to the pulsar to |a(Sun)/c| < 1.5 x 10^{-18} 1/s at 95% confidence, and derive a pulsar mass, m(psr) = 1.76 +/- 0.20 M, one of the highest estimates so far obtained., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

A large sample of pulsars has been observed to study their subpulse modulation at an observing wavelength (when achievable) of both 21 and 92 cm using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. In this paper we present the 92-cm data and a comparison is made with the already published 21-cm results. We analysed 191 pulsars at 92 cm using fluctuation spectra. The sample of pulsars is as unbiased as possible towards any particular pulsar characteristics. For 15 pulsars drifting subpulses are discovered for the first time and 26 of the new drifters found in the 21-cm data are confirmed. We discovered nulling for 8 sources and 8 pulsars are found to intermittently emit single pulses that have pulse energies similar to giant pulses. It is estimated that at least half of the total population of pulsars have drifting subpulses when observations with a high enough signal-to-noise ratio would be available. It could well be that the drifting subpulse mechanism is an intrinsic property of the emission mechanism itself, although for some pulsars it is difficult or impossible to detect. Drifting subpulses are in general found at both frequencies, although the chance of detecting drifting subpulses is possibly slightly higher at 92 cm. It appears that the youngest pulsars have the most disordered subpulses and the subpulses become more and more organized into drifting subpulses as the pulsar ages. The correlations with the modulation indices are argued to be consistent with the picture in which the radio emission can be divided in a drifting subpulse signal plus a quasi-steady signal which becomes, on average, stronger at high observing frequencies. We have increased the list of pulsars that show the drifting subpulse phenomenon by 42, indicating that more than 55% of the pulsars that show this phenomenon. The large number of new drifters we have found allows us, for the first time, to do meaningful statistics on the drifting phenomenon. We find that the drifting phenomenon is correlated with the pulsar age such that drifting is more likely to occur in older pulsars. Pulsars that drift more coherently seem to be older and have a lower modulation index. Using a statistically rigorous analysis method, we place limits on the existence of an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background using pulsar timing observations. We consider backgrounds whose characteristic strain spectra may be described as a power-law dependence with frequency. Such backgrounds include an astrophysical background produced by coalescing supermassive black-hole binary systems and cosmological backgrounds due to relic gravitational waves and cosmic strings. Using the best available data, we obtain an upper limit on the energy density per unit logarithmic frequency interval of \Omega^{\rm SMBH}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 1.9 x 10^{-8} for an astrophysical background which is five times more stringent than the earlier Kaspi et al. (1994) limit of 1.1 x 10^{-7}. We also provide limits on a background due to relic gravitational waves and cosmic strings of \Omega^{\rm relic}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 2.0 x 10^{-8} and \Omega^{\rm cs}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 1.9 x 10^{-8} respectively. All of the quoted upper limits correspond to a 0.1% false alarm rate together with a 95% detection rate. We discuss the physical implications of these results and highlight the future possibilities of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project. We find that our current results can 1) constrain the merger rate of supermassive binary black hole systems at high red shift, 2) rule out some relationships between the black hole mass and the galactic halo mass, 3) constrain the rate of expansion in the inflationary era and 4) provide an upper bound on the dimensionless tension of a cosmic string background., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Tempo2 is a new software package for the analysis of pulsar pulse times of arrival. In this paper we describe in detail the timing model used by tempo2, and discuss limitations on the attainable precision. In addition to the intrinsic slow-down behaviour of the pulsar, tempo2 accounts for the effects of a binary orbital motion, the secular motion of the pulsar or binary system, interstellar, Solar system and ionospheric dispersion, observatory motion (including Earth rotation, precession, nutation, polar motion and orbital motion), tropospheric propagation delay, and gravitational time dilation due to binary companions and Solar system bodies. We believe the timing model is accurate in its description of predictable systematic timing effects to better than one nanosecond, except in the case of relativistic binary systems where further theoretical development is needed. I review recent results concerning the shape of drifting subpulse patterns, and the relationship to model predictions. While a variety of theoretical models exist for drifting subpulses, observers typically think in terms of a spatio-temporal model of circulating beamlets. Assuming the model is correct, geometric parameters have been inferred and animated "maps" of the beam have been made. However, the model makes very specific predictions about the curvature of the drift bands that have remained largely untested. Work so far in this area indicates that drift bands tend not to follow the prediction, and in some cases discontinuities are seen that are suggestive of the superposition of out of phase drift patterns. Recent polarimetric observations also show that the drift patterns in the two orthogonal polarisation modes are offset in phase. In one case the pattern in one of the modes shows a discontinuity suggesting no less than three superposed, out-of-phase drift patterns! We have carried out a study of the orthogonal polarisation mode behaviour as a function of frequency of 18 pulsars, using average pulsar data from the European Pulsar Network (EPN). Assuming that the radiation consists of two 100% polarised completely orthogonal superposed modes we separated these modes, resulting in average pulse profiles of each mode at multiple frequencies for each pulsar. Furthermore, we studied the frequency dependence of the relative intensity of these modes. We found in many pulsars that the average pulse profiles of the two modes differ in their dependence on frequency. In particular, we found that pulse components that are dominated by one mode tend to increase in intensity with increasing frequency with respect to the rest of the profile., Comment: 31 pages, 24 figures, 1 table, accepted by A&A; added references in introduction

Using new observations and archival WSRT data we have expanded the list of pulsars which show the drifting subpulse phenomenon by 42, indicating that at least one in three pulsars exhibits this phenomenon. The real fraction of pulsars which show the drifting phenomenon is likely to be larger than some 55%. The majority of the analysed pulsars show subpulse modulation (170), of which the majority were not previously known to show subpulse modulation and 30 show clear systematic drifting. The large number of new drifters we have found allows us, for the first time, to do meaningful statistics on the drifting phenomenon. We find that the drifting phenomenon is correlated with the pulsar age such that drifting is more likely to occur in older pulsars. Pulsars which drift more coherently seem to be older and have a lower modulation index. There is no significant correlation found between P3 and other pulsar parameters (such as the pulsar age), as has been reported in the past. There is no significant preference of drift direction and the drift direction is not found to be correlated with pulsar parameters. None of the four complexity parameters predicted by different emission models (Jenet & Gil 2003) are shown to be inconsistent with the set of modulation indices of our sample of pulsars. Therefore none of the models can be ruled out based on our observations. Using new techniques based on the polarimetric fluctuation spectrum, the fluctuation behaviour of the polarization of individual pulses is examined in three pulsars that show drifting subpulses, allowing various aspects of the fluctuations to be quantified for the first time. Of the three pulsars studied, only PSR B0809+74 shows behaviour completely consistent with the superposition of orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs), and this only at 328 MHz and in superposition with an apparently randomly polarized component. The observed periodic pattern is decomposed into the sum of two orthogonally polarized, out-of-phase drift patterns, one of which shows a dramatic jump in subpulse phase near the leading edge of the pulse window. For PSR B0320+39 and PSR B0818$-$13, considerable periodic fluctuations away from OPM orientations are seen, a condition that also occurs in the trailing half of the pulse in PSR B0809+74 at 1380 MHz. In some cases the deviation is so strong that the periodic locus of the polarization vector in the Poincar\'{e} sphere is almost circular, in contrast to the strictly colinear states of superposed OPMs. Several possibilities are discussed for the physical origin of these patterns. The similarity between the subpulse patterns in one of the OPMs of PSR B0809+74 at 328 MHz to that of the total intensity signal at 1380 MHz supports a picture of superposed, out of phase drift patterns. To explain the full range of behaviour seen in the three pulsars, it must be possible to produce at least three arbitrarily polarized superposed patterns. While the data do not suggest a particular approach for the empirical decomposition of patterns into non-orthogonally polarized components, the specific, quantitative nature of the results should provide strong constraints for theoretically driven modelling., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures (1 colour), accepted for publication in A&A. We report on an analysis of the polarization of single pulses of PSR B0329+54 at 328 MHz. We find that the distribution of polarization orientations in the central component diverges strongly from the standard picture of orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs), making a remarkable partial annulus on the Poincare sphere. A second, tightly clustered region of density appears in the opposite hemisphere, at a point antipodal to the centre of the annulus. We argue that this can be understood in terms of birefringent alterations in the relative phase of two elliptically polarized propagation modes in the pulsar magnetosphere (i.e. generalised Faraday rotation). The ellipticity of the modes implies a significant charge density in the plasma, while the presence of both senses of circular polarization, and the fact that only one mode shows the effect, supports the view that refracted ordinary-mode rays are involved in the production of the annulus. At other pulse longitudes the polarization (including the circular component) is broadly consistent with an origin in elliptical OPMs, shown here quantitatively for the first time, however considerable non-orthogonal contributions serve to broaden the orientation distribution in an isotropic manner., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, to appear in A&A

The Petrova (2000) model to calculate pulse profiles is extended to a variable emission height model to make it physically self-consistent. In this context variable means that the emission height is no longer considered to be the same for different magnetic field lines. The pulse profiles calculated using this new model seem to be less realistic due to a focusing effect and cannot be used to fit (typical) multifrequency pulsar observations. Apart from the focusing effect the general morphology of pulse profiles is not greatly affected by introducing a variable emission height. Drifting subpulse patterns in pulsar signals are frequently interpreted in terms of a model in which a rotating ring of sparks on the polar cap gives rise to emission from regions of the magnetsophere connected to the sparks by dipolar magnetic field lines. The spacing of drift-bands in time depends on the circulation rate of the polar cap pattern, but to first order the longitudinal phase dependence of the subpulse modulation should obey a frequency-independent relation determined by the geometrical configuration in a similar manner to the polarization position angle. We present here observations at 272-1380 MHz of PSR B0320+39 and PSR B0809+74, both of which show nearly linear drift in two longitude regions, separated by a region of reduced modulation and accompanied by a large step in the phase of the subpulse pattern. We show that the observation of Bartel et al. (1981) that the subpulse spacing for PSR B0809+74 was 1.8 times greater at 102.5 MHz than at 1720 MHz is most likely an artifact of the phase step, which is only present at high frequencies. The phase steps can be understood as a consequence of observing overlapping offset images of the polar cap spark pattern. We also detected more complicated, frequency-dependent behaviour that would require that the images do not simply differ by rotation about their centers. Detailed modelling of non-axisymmetric refraction or distorted magnetic fields is suggested as a means of pursuing an explanation for this phenomenon., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted to A&A

We present a study of single pulses from nine bright northern pulsars to investigate the behaviour of circular polarisation, V. The observations were conducted with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at 1.41 GHz and 4.85 GHz and the Westerbork radio telescope at 352 MHz. For the first time, we present the average profile of the absolute circular polarisation |V| in the single pulses. We demonstrate that the average profile of |V| is the distinguishing feature between pulse components that exhibit low V in the single pulses and components that exhibit high V of either handedness, despite both cases resulting in a low mean. We also show that the |V| average profile remains virtually constant with frequency, which is not generally the case for V, leading us to the conclusion that |V| is a key quantity in the pulsar emission problem., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS letters

We report the detection of pulse-to-pulse periodic intensity modulations, in observations of recycled pulsars. Even though the detection of individual pulses was generally not possible due to their low flux density and short duration, through the accumulation of statistics over sequences of 10^5--10^6 pulses we were able to determine the presence and properties of the pulse-to-pulse intensity variations of six pulsars. In most cases we found that the modulation included a weak, broadly quasi-periodic component. For two pulsars the sensitivity was high enough to ascertain that the modulation phase apparently varies systematically across the profile, indicating that the modulation appears as drifting subpulses. We detected brighter than average individual pulses in several pulsars, with energies up to 2--7 times higher than the mean, similar to results from normal pulsars. We were sensitive to giant pulses of a rate of occurrence equal to (and in many instances much lower than) that of PSR B1937+21 at 1400 MHz (~30 times lower than at 430 MHz), but none were detected, indicating that the phenomenon is rare in recycled pulsars., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A&A

We report on an analysis of the drifting subpulses of PSR B0320+39 that indicates a sudden step of ~180 degrees in subpulse phase near the centre of the pulse profile. The phase step, in combination with the attenuation of the periodic subpulse modulation at pulse longitudes near the step, suggests that the patterns arise from the addition of two superposed components of nearly opposite drift phase and differing longitudinal dependence. We argue that since there cannot be physical overlap of spark patterns on the polar cap, the drift components must be associated with a kind of ``multiple imaging'' of a single polar cap ``carousel'' spark pattern. One possibility is that the two components correspond to refracted rays originating from opposite sides of the polar cap. The basic form of drifting sub-pulses is that of a periodicity whose phase depends (approximately linearly) on both pulse longitude and pulse number. As such, we argue that the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the longitude-time data (called the Two-Dimensional Fluctuation Spectrum; 2DFS) presents an ideal basis for studies of this phenomenon. We examine the 2DFS of a pulsar signal synthesized using the parameters of an empirical model for sub-pulse behaviour. We show that the transform concentrates the modulation power to a relatively small area of phase space in the region corresponding to the characteristic frequency of sub-pulses in longitude and pulse number. This property enables the detection of the presence and parameters of drifting sub-pulses with great sensitivity even in data where the noise level far exceeds the instantaneous flux density of individual pulses. The amplitude of drifting sub-pulses is modulated in time by scintillation and pulse nulling and in longitude by the rotating viewing geometry (with an envelope similar to that of the mean pulse profile). In addition, sub-pulse phase as a function of longitude and pulse number can differ from that of a sinusoid due to variations in the drift rate (often associated with nulling) and through the varying rate of traverse of magnetic azimuth afforded by the sight line. These deviations from uniform sub-pulse drift manifest in the 2DFS as broadening of the otherwise delta-function response of a uniform sinusoid. We have conducted a search of 19 southern Galactic globular clusters for sub-millisecond pulsars at 660 MHz with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. To minimize dispersion smearing we used the CPSR baseband recorder, which samples the 20 MHz observing band at the Nyquist rate. By possessing a complete description of the signal we could synthesize an optimal filterbank in software, and in the case of globular clusters of known dispersion measure, much of the dispersion could be removed using coherent techniques. This allowed for very high time resolution (25.6 us in most cases), making our searches in general sensitive to sub-millisecond pulsars with flux densities greater than about 3 mJy at 50 cm. No new pulsars were discovered, placing important constraints on the proportion of pulsars with very short spin periods in these clusters., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in ApJ

We have conducted a survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes using the 13-beam 21-cm multibeam receiver of the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. The survey covered the region enclosed by 5 deg < |b| < 15 deg and -100 deg < l < 50 deg with 4,702 processed pointings of 265 s each, for a total of 14.5 days of integration time. Thirteen 2x96-channel filterbanks provided 288 MHz of bandwidth at a centre frequency of 1374 MHz, one-bit sampled every 125 microsec and incurring ~DM/13.4 cm^-3 pc samples of dispersion smearing. The system was sensitive to slow and most millisecond pulsars in the region with flux densities greater than approximately 0.3--1.1 mJy. Offline analysis on the 64-node Swinburne workstation cluster resulted in the detection of 170 pulsars of which 69 were new discoveries. Eight of the new pulsars, by virtue of their small spin periods and period derivatives, may be recycled and have been reported elsewhere. The slow pulsars discovered are typical of those already known in the volume searched, being of intermediate to old age. Several pulsars experience pulse nulling and two display very regular drifting sub-pulses. We present the timing parameters of nine pulsars discovered in a survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes at 1400 MHz with the Parkes radio telescope. Eight of these pulsars possess small pulse periods and period derivatives thought to be indicative of ``recycling''. Six of the pulsars are in circular binary systems, including two with relatively massive white dwarf companions. We discuss the implications of these new systems for theories of binary formation and evolution. One long-period pulsar (J1410-7404) has a moderately weak magnetic field and an exceedingly narrow average pulse profile, similar to other recycled pulsars., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We have discovered two recycled pulsars in relativistic orbits as part of the first high-frequency survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes. PSR J1157-5112 is a 44 ms pulsar and the first recycled pulsar with an ultra-massive (M > 1.14 Mo) white dwarf companion. Millisecond pulsar J1757-5322 is a relativistic circular-orbit system which will coalesce due to the emission of gravitational radiation in less than 9.5 Gyr. Of the ~40 known circular orbit pulsars, J1757-5322 and J1157-5112 have the highest projected orbital velocities. There are now three local neutron-star/white-dwarf binaries that will coalesce in less than a Hubble time, implying a large coalescence rate for these objects in the local Universe. Systems such as J1141-6545 (Kaspi et al. 2000) are potential gamma-ray burst progenitors and dominate the coalescence rate, whilst lighter systems make excellent progenitors of millisecond pulsars with planetary or ultra-low mass companions., Comment: 4 pages, to appear in ApJ Letters. We have conducted a pulsar survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes (15deg < |b| < 5deg) at 20 cm. The survey has been highly successful, discovering 58 new pulsars, eight of which are recycled, in only ~14 days of integration time. One pulsar has a very narrow (2deg FWHM) average profile for the pulsar's period (278 ms). The six new recycled binary systems provide valuable information on the formation of white dwarf pulsar binaries. Two systems have massive white dwarf companions (> 0.57 Mo and > 1.2 Mo), while anotherhas a low mass (~0.2 Mo) companion in a 23.3-d orbit, residing the well-known orbital period ``gap''., Comment: 2 pages, proc IAU 177 "Pulsar Astronomy - 2000 and Beyond" corrected statements about IMBP evolution
