The World Wide Web impacted the educational model and became part of distance education in this early century. There were many changes taking place in higher education for political, economic and educational reasons. New goals and educational objectives are being set within educational institutions. There were particular emphases to produce a more effective delivery of learning methods for distance learning students. The use of Internet was seen as an important issue in the development of an understanding of the complex process of instilling knowledge to post graduates students. Well-established universities are re-examining their missions and looking for different ways of providing lifelong education. The Building Division of the MACE was particularly keen to increase the use of web-based learning in its courses, which will increase the amount of students enrolled into these programmes, help them learn in a flexible and workable manner. This paper describes the outline for the design and development of a distance-learning module. Some benefits and setbacks will be discussed and recommendation for future improvement explained.

The focused investigation of building design is necessary to understand and quantify the implication of different design parameters on their energy performance. The design of future buildings is a major challenge, as current designs may be inappropriate in a future with global warming due to climate change impacts. In addition this understanding is necessary to be able to predict timing and profile of future energy demand, which is crucial for the long-term planning of energy infrastructures – particularly electricity. In this paper, the Morris Elementary Effects method is used as a screening method, to identify the key parameters of the design and operation of office buildings that affect the estimation of space cooling peak load and annual energy demand. Internal heat gains, cooling set-point and ventilation rates are identified as the parameters with larger implications for both annual and peak space cooling demand. In future climate scenarios, the magnitude of change of annual space cooling demand is significantly (around five times) larger than the change in the peak demand. Asides from the potential increase of space cooling demand in future scenarios, the sensitivity of the space cooling demand relative to the change in design parameters is potentially much larger.

There is increasing demand on sustainability-led design to reduce negative impacts brought by construction development. The capability of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to achieve sustainability is widely acknowledged. Various sustainability analysis and calculation can be performed at early stages to help the designers in decision making. However, the level of implementation is still not popular in the construction industry. Many of the industry players are still rely on traditional 2D method for designing and analysis. Hence, this study aims to demonstrate a proof concept of using BIM for sustainability design. The first phase of this study conducted a critical review of existing assessment schemes: BREEAM, LEED, SBTool, CASBEE, BEAM Plus, Green Star, Green Mark and GBI, to develop a set of main criteria to be considered for sustainability design. The findings revealed that fourteen criteria are considered, which are management, sustainable site, transport, indoor environmental quality, energy, waste, water, material, pollution, innovation, economics, social, culture and quality of services. It was found that most of the existing schemes emphasized on environmental aspect as compared to economics, social and culture except SBTool. The next phase of this study will conduct a case study to demonstrate sustainability design through BIM by using the criteria developed from the first phase.
