Electron skew scattering by impurities is one of the major mechanisms behind the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic nanostructures. It is particularly strong at the surface of topological insulators where electron dynamics is governed by the spin-1/2 Dirac equation. Motivated by recently discovered mappings between hydrodynamics and the spin-1 Dirac equation, we consider the scattering of plasma waves -- propagating charge density oscillations -- excited in graphene off a non-uniform magnetic field created by an adjacent circular micromagnet. The calculated scattering amplitude not only exhibits a giant asymmetry, or skewness, but is resonantly enhanced if the frequency of the incoming wave matches the frequency of the chiral trapped mode circulating the micromagnet in only one direction. Furthermore, if the frequency of the incoming plasma wave is a few times larger than the Larmor frequency, the angular distribution of its forward scattering is almost indistinguishable from that of a Dirac electron at the surface of a topological insulator scattering off a magnetic impurity. We consider electron--hole Cooper pair condensation in a heterostructure formed by a topological insulator film and a quantum well. We argue that the helical nature of the Dirac electronic states at the topological insulator surface results in the presence of two competing degenerate pairing channels. The corresponding paired states have an unconventional symmetry in the order parameter describing the Cooper pair condensate, can be classified by the topological Chern invariant, and are topologically distinct. We discuss possible manifestations of the nontrivial topology, including the formation of chiral states at the domain walls separating two distinct states, quantized anomalous transport phenomena, and connections with chiral topological superconductivity., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. When mobile impurities are introduced and coupled to a Fermi sea, new quasiparticles known as Fermi polarons are formed. There are two interesting, yet drastically different regimes of the Fermi polaron problem: (I) the attractive polaron (AP) branch, connected to pairing phenomena spanning the crossover from BCS superfluidity to the Bose-Einstein condensation of molecules; and (II) the repulsive branch (RP), which underlies the physics responsible for Stoner's itinerant ferromagnetism. Here, we study Fermi polarons in two dimensional systems, where many questions and debates regarding their nature persist. The model system we investigate is a doped MoSe$_2$ monolayer. We find the observed AP-RP energy splitting and the quantum dynamics of attractive polarons agree with the predictions of polaron theory. As the doping density increases, the quantum dephasing of the attractive polarons remains constant, indicative of stable quasiparticles, while the repulsive polaron dephasing rate increases nearly quadratically. Quasiparticles with Weyl dispersion can display an abundance of novel topological, thermodynamic and transport phenomena, which is why novel Weyl materials and platforms for Weyl physics are being intensively looked for in electronic, magnetic, photonic and acoustic systems. We demonstrate that conducting materials in magnetic fields generically host Weyl excitations due to the hybridisation of phonons with helicons, collective neutral modes of electrons interacting with electromagnetic waves propagating in the material. Such Weyl excitations are, in general, created by the interactions of helicons with longitudinal acoustic phonons. An additional type of Weyl excitation in polar crystals comes from the interaction between helicons and longitudinal optical phonons. Such excitations can be detected in X-ray and Raman scattering experiments. The existence of the Weyl excitations involving optical phonons in the bulk of the materials also leads to the formation of topologically protected surface arc states that can be detected via surface plasmon resonance., Comment: 7+3 pages, and 2 figures. As the Earth rotates, the Coriolis force causes several oceanic and atmospheric waves to be trapped along the equator, including Kelvin, Yanai, Rossby, and Poincar\'e modes. It has been demonstrated that the mathematical origin of these waves is related to the nontrivial topology of the underlying hydrodynamic equations. Inspired by recent observations of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in bubble-shaped traps in microgravity ultracold quantum gas experiments, we show that equatorial modes are supported by a rapidly rotating condensate in a spherical geometry. Based on a zero-temperature coarse-grained hydrodynamic framework, we reformulate the coupled oscillations of the superfluid and the Abrikosov vortex lattice resulting from rotation by a Schr\"odinger-like eigenvalue problem. The obtained non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is topologically nontrivial. Furthermore, we solve the hydrodynamic equations for a spherical geometry and find that the rotating superfluid hosts Kelvin, Yanai, and Poincar\'e equatorial modes, but not the Rossby mode. Interactions between quasiparticles are of fundamental importance and ultimately determine the macroscopic properties of quantum matter. A famous example is the phenomenon of superconductivity, which arises from attractive electron-electron interactions that are mediated by phonons or even other more exotic fluctuations in the material. Here we introduce mobile exciton impurities into a two-dimensional electron gas and investigate the interactions between the resulting Fermi polaron quasiparticles. We employ multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy on monolayer WS$_2$, which provides an ideal platform for determining the nature of polaron-polaron interactions due to the underlying trion fine structure and the valley specific optical selection rules. At low electron doping densities, we find that the dominant interactions are between polaron states that are dressed by the same Fermi sea. In the absence of bound polaron pairs (bipolarons), we show using a minimal microscopic model that these interactions originate from a phase-space filling effect, where excitons compete for the same electrons. We furthermore reveal the existence of a bipolaron bound state with remarkably large binding energy, involving excitons in different valleys cooperatively bound to the same electron. Our work lays the foundation for probing and understanding strong electron correlation effects in two-dimensional layered structures such as moir\'e superlattices.

We theoretically investigate exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor heterostructure, where a static magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane. To explore the interplay between magnetic field and a strong light-matter coupling, we employ a fully microscopic theory that explicitly incorporates electrons, holes and photons in a semiconductor microcavity. Furthermore, we exploit a mapping between the 2D harmonic oscillator and the 2D hydrogen atom that allows us to efficiently solve the problem numerically for the entire Rydberg series as well as for the ground-state exciton. In contrast to previous approaches, we can readily obtain the real-space exciton wave functions and we show how they shrink in size with increasing magnetic field, which mirrors their increasing interaction energy and oscillator strength. We compare our theory with recent experiments on exciton-polaritons in GaAs heterostructures in an external magnetic field and we find excellent agreement with the measured polariton energies. Crucially, we are able to capture the observed light-induced changes to the exciton in the regime of very strong light-matter coupling where a perturbative coupled oscillator description breaks down. Due to its rotation, Earth traps a few equatorial ocean and atmospheric waves, including Kelvin, Yanai, Rossby, and Poincare modes. It has been recently demonstrated that the mathematical origin of equatorial waves is intricately related to the nontrivial topology of hydrodynamic equations describing oceans or the atmosphere. In the present work, we consider plasma oscillations supported by a two-dimensional electron gas confined at the surface of a sphere or a cylinder. We argue that in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, these systems host a set of equatorial magnetoplasma waves that are counterparts to the equatorial waves trapped by Earth. For a spherical geometry, the equatorial modes are well developed only if their penetration length is smaller than the radius of the sphere. For a cylindrical geometry, the spectrum of equatorial modes is weakly dependent on the cylinder radius and overcomes finite-size effects. We argue that this exceptional robustness can be explained by destructive interference effects. Transition metal dichalcogenides have a rich exciton landscape consisting of a variety of bright and dark excitonic states. We consider the lowest-energy dark states in $\hbox{MoS}_2$, which can be referred to as hybrid excitons, as they are formed by a Dirac electron and a Schr\"{o}dinger hole. The chiral nature of the Dirac electron introduces asymmetry to the excited exciton state spectrum and entangles the relative motion of the electron and hole with the center-of-mass motion. We demonstrate that the entanglement generates an additional contribution to the Berry curvature of hybrid excitons. The additional contribution is substrate-dependent and accounts for almost one quarter of the Berry curvature in suspended samples. The nontrivial geometry of hybrid excitons is manifested in the optical anomalous valley Hall effect, which can be observed via recently developed pump-probe photoemission spectroscopy. We argue that the Hall angle of hybrid excitons is approximately one half of that for bright excitons. Moreover, the anticipated long lifetime of hybrid excitons favors an extended propagation distance and allows the spatial separation of hybrid excitons with different valley indices., Comment: 8 pages, and 5 figures. The surface of a topological insulator hosts Dirac electronic states with the spin-momentum locking, which constrains spin orientation perpendicular to electron momentum. As a result, collective plasma excitations in the interacting Dirac liquid manifest themselves as coupled charge- and spin-waves. Here we demonstrate that the presence of the spin component enables effective coupling between plasma waves and spin waves at interfaces between the surface of a topological insulator and insulating magnet. Moreover, the helical nature of spin-momentum locking textures provides the phase winding in the coupling between the spin and plasma waves that makes the spectrum of hybridized spin-plasma modes to be topologically nontrivial. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the absorption of moderately doped two-dimensional semiconductors can be described in terms of exciton-polarons. In this scenario, attractive and repulsive polaron branches are formed due to interactions between a photo-excited exciton and a Fermi sea of excess charge carriers. These interactions have previously been treated in a phenomenological manner. Here, we present a microscopic derivation of the electron-exciton interactions which utilizes a mixture of variational and perturbative approaches. We find that the interactions feature classical charge-dipole behaviour in the long-range limit and that they are only weakly modified for moderate doping. We explain the strong interlayer drag resistance observed at low temperatures in bilayer electron-hole systems in terms of an interplay between local electron-hole-pair condensation and disorder-induced carrier density variations. Smooth disorder drives the condensate into a granulated phase where interlayer coherence is formed only in well separated and disconnected regions, or grains, and the densities of electrons and holes accidentally match. The drag resistance is then dominated by Andreev scattering of charge carries between layers at the grains that transfers momentum between layers. Fluctuating Cooper pairs formed by spatially separated electrons and holes are precursors of their equilibrium condensation. Their presence strongly impacts transport phenomena and interlayer tunneling in double-layer systems above the transition temperature. Here, we consider a hybrid graphene/quantum well double-layer system and focus on the dynamics of fluctuating Cooper pairs formed by conventional electrons and Dirac holes. We demonstrate that the chiral nature of Dirac holes is manifested in the presence of two (almost) degenerate competing pairing channels, which are intertwined by effective pseudospin-orbit interactions. We argue that the spectrum of the Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian describing the energetics of fluctuating Cooper pairs is geometrically nontrivial and can be characterized by the half-integer topological Chern number. We derive a kinetic equation for fluctuating Cooper pairs and demonstrate that their nontrivial geometries generate two anomalous velocities of distinct geometrical origins. These velocities are intricately connected with the Berry curvature and the quantum metric for the Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian, respectively. A strong low-temperature enhancement of the tunneling conductance between graphene bilayers has been reported recently, and interpreted as a signature of equilibrium electron-hole pairing, first predicted in bilayers more than forty years ago but previously unobserved. Here we provide a detailed theory of conductance enhanced by fluctuating electron-hole Cooper pairs, which are a precursor to equilibrium pairing, that accounts for specific details of the multi-band double graphene bilayer system which supports several different pairing channels. Above the equilibrium condensation temperature, pairs have finite temporal coherence and do not support dissipationless tunneling. Instead, they strongly boost the tunneling conductivity via a fluctuational internal Josephson effect. Our theory makes predictions for the dependence of the zero bias peak in the differential tunneling conductance on temperature and electron-hole density imbalance that capture important aspects of the experimental observations. In our interpretation of the observations, cleaner samples with longer disorder scattering times would condense at temperatures $T_c$ up to $\sim 50 {\rm K}$, compared to the record $T_c \sim 1.5 $K achieved to date in the experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. We derive exact sum-rules that relate the tunneling density of states (TDOS) of spinful electrons in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime to the spin-dependent many body ground state correlation energy. Because the tunneling process is spin-conserving, the 2D (two-dimensional) to 2D tunneling current $I$ at a given bias voltage $V$ in a spin-polarized system is a sum of majority and minority spin contributions. The sum rules can be used to define spin-dependent gaps that we associate with peaks in 2D to 2D tunneling $I-V$ curves. We discuss different scenarios of tunneling between layers at different fillings in relation to our sum rules. We comment on what recent tunneling experiments say about spin-dependent correlations in light of our sum rules, and propose additional measurements that could provide more specific experimental estimates of spin-dependent correlation energies., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

In the presence of a finite interlayer displacement field bilayer graphene has an energy gap that is dependent on stacking and largest for the stable AB and BA stacking arrangements. When the relative orientations between layers are twisted through a small angle to form a moir$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$ pattern, the local stacking arrangement changes slowly. We show that for non-zero displacement fields the low-energy physics of twisted bilayers is captured by a phenomenological helical network model that describes electrons localized on domain walls separating regions with approximate AB and BA stacking. The network band structure is gapless and has of a series of two-dimensional bands with Dirac band-touching points and a density-of-states that is periodic in energy with one zero and one divergence per period., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures

In minimally twisted bilayer graphene, a moir{\'e} pattern consisting of AB and BA stacking regions separated by domain walls forms. These domain walls are predicted to support counterpropogating topologically protected helical (TPH) edge states when the AB and BA regions are gapped. We fabricate designer moir{\'e} crystals with wavelengths longer than 50 nm and demonstrate the emergence of TPH states on the domain wall network by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We observe a double-line profile of the TPH states on the domain walls, only occurring when the AB and BA regions are gapped. We examine excitons formed in the bulk of a topological insulator as the system is tuned via a parameter between topological and trivial insulating phases, arguing that nontrivial topology has fingerprints in the spectrum of these excitons. The closely related hydrogen atom problem is well known to have a degeneracy due to a hidden symmetry, and the changes to the excitonic spectrum that we find can be understood as a result of breaking of this underlying symmetry due to the Berry phase. Furthermore, this phase is found to affect the spectrum in the topological parameter regime much more strongly than in the trivial regime. We first construct a semiclassical model of the system to develop qualitative intuition for the effects at play, then move to a more robust numerical simulation of the full quantum system, working with the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model of a 2D topological insulator., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

SmB6 is a mixed valence Kondo insulator that exhibits a sharp increase in resistance following an activated behavior that levels off and saturates below 4K. This behavior can be explained by the proposal of SmB6 representing a new state of matter, a Topological Kondo insulator, in which a Kondo gap is developed and topologically protected surface conduction dominates low-temperature transport. Exploiting its non-linear dynamics, a tunable SmB6 oscillator device was recently demonstrated, where a small DC current generates large oscillating voltages at frequencies from a few Hz to hundreds of MHz. This behavior was explained by a theoretical model describing the thermal and electronic dynamics of coupled surface and bulk states. However, a crucial aspect of this model, the predicted temperature oscillation in the surface state, hasn't been experimentally observed to date. This is largely due to the technical difficulty of detecting an oscillating temperature of the very thin surface state. Here we report direct measurements of the time-dependent surface state temperature in SmB6 with a RuO micro-thermometer. Our results agree quantitatively with the theoretically simulated temperature waveform, and hence support the validity of the oscillator model, which will provide accurate theoretical guidance for developing future SmB6oscillators at higher frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

In previous work we have argued that the optical properties of moderately doped two-dimensional semiconductors can be described in terms of excitons dressed by their interactions with a degenerate Fermi sea of additional charge carriers. These interactions split the bare exciton into attractive and repulsive exciton-polaron branches. The collective excitations of the coupled system are many-body generalizations of the bound trion and unbound states of a single electron interacting with an exciton. In this article we consider exciton-polarons in the presence of an external magnetic field that quantizes the kinetic energy of the electrons in the Fermi sea. Our theoretical approach is based on a transformation to new basis that respects the underlying symmetry of magnetic translations. We find that the attractive exciton-polaron branch is only weakly influenced by the magnetic field, whereas the repulsive branch exhibits magnetic oscillations and splits into discrete peaks that reflect combined exciton-cyclotron resonance., Comment: 13 pages and 4 figures

We study controllable friction in a system consisting of a dark soliton in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a non-interacting Fermi gas. The fermions act as impurity atoms, not part of the original condensate, that scatter off of the soliton. We study semi-classical dynamics of the dark soliton, a particle-like object with negative mass, and calculate its friction coefficient. Surprisingly, it depends periodically on the ratio of interspecies (impurity-condensate) to intraspecies (condensate-condensate) interaction strengths. By tuning this ratio, one can access a regime where the friction coefficient vanishes. We develop a general theory of stochastic dynamics for negative mass objects and find that their dynamics are drastically different from their positive mass counterparts - they do not undergo Brownian motion. From the exact phase space probability distribution function (i.e. in position and velocity), we find that both the trajectory and lifetime of the soliton are altered by friction, and the soliton can only undergo Brownian motion in the presence of friction and a confining potential. Recent optical studies of monolayer transition metal dechalcogenides have demonstrated that their excitonic absorption feature splits into two widely separated peaks at finite carrier densities. The additional peak is usually attributed to the presence of trions, bound states of two electrons and a hole or an electron and two holes. Here we argue that in the density range over which the trion peak is well resolved, it cannot be interpreted in terms of weakly coupled three-body systems, and that the appropriate picture is instead one in which excitons are dressed by interactions with a Fermi sea of excess carriers. This coupling splits the exciton spectrum into a lower energy attractive exciton-polaron branch, normally identified as a trion branch, and a higher energy repulsive exciton-polaron branch, normally identified as an exciton branch. We have calculated the frequency and doping dependence of the optical conductivity and found that: (i) the splitting varies linearly with the Fermi energy of the excess quasiparticles; (ii) the trion peak is dominant at high carrier densities; (iii) and the trion peak width is considerably smaller than that of the excitonic peak. The surface of a 3D topological insulator is described by a helical electron state with the electron's spin and momentum locked together. We show that in the presence of ferromagnetic fluctuations the surface of a topological insulator is unstable towards a superconducting state with unusual pairing, dubbed Amperean pairing. The key idea is that the dynamical fluctuations of a ferromagnetic layer deposited on the surface of a topological insulator couple to the electrons as gauge fields. The transverse components of the magnetic gauge fields are unscreened and can mediate an effective interaction between electrons. There is an attractive interaction between electrons with momenta in the same direction which makes the pairing to be of Amperean type. We consider the proximity effect between Dirac states at the surface of a topological insulator and a ferromagnet with easy plane anisotropy, which is described by the \emph{XY}-model and undergoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition. The surface states of the topological insulator interacting with classical magnetic fluctuations of the ferromagnet can be mapped onto the problem of Dirac fermions in a random magnetic field. However, this analogy is only partial in the presence of electron-hole asymmetry or warping of the Dirac dispersion, which results in screening of magnetic fluctuations. Scattering at magnetic fluctuations influences the behavior of the surface resistivity as a function of temperature. Near the BKT phase transition temperature we find that the resistivity of surface states scales linearly with temperature and has a clear maximum which becomes more pronounced as the Fermi energy decreases. Additionally at low temperatures we find linear resistivity, usually associated with non-Fermi liquid behavior, however here it appears entirely within the Fermi liquid picture., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We explore the quantum dynamics of a bright matter-wave soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional bosonic superfluid with attractive interactions. Specifically, we focus on the dissipative forces experienced by the soliton due to its interaction with Bogoliubov excitations. Using the collective coordinate approach and the Keldysh formalism, a Langevin equation of motion for the soliton is derived from the first principle. The equation contains a stochastic Langevin force (associated with quantum noise) and a non-local in time dissipative force, which appears due to inelastic scattering of Bogoliubov quasiparticles off of the moving soliton. It is shown that Ohmic friction (i.e., a term proportional to the soliton's velocity) is absent in the integrable setup. However, the Markovian approximation gives rise to the Abraham-Lorentz force (i.e., a term proportional to the derivative of the soliton's acceleration), which is known from classical electrodynamics of a charged particle interacting with its own radiation. These Abraham-Lorentz equations famously contain a fundamental causality paradox, where the soliton/particle interacts with excitations/radiation originating from future events. We show, however, that the causality paradox is an artifact of the Markovian approximation, and our exact non-Markovian dissipative equations give rise to physical trajectories. Several recent experiments have reported an anomalous temperature dependence of the Coulomb drag effect in electron-hole bilayers. Motivated by these puzzling data, we study theoretically a low-density electron-hole bilayer, where electrons and holes avoid quantum degeneracy by forming excitonic molecules. We describe the ionization-recombination crossover between the electron-hole plasma and exciton gas and calculate both the intralayer and drag resistivity as a function of temperature. The latter exhibits a minimum followed by a sharp upturn at low temperatures in a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations [see, e.g., J. A. Seamons et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 026804 (2009)]. We consider the interplay between magnetic skyrmions in an insulating thin film and the Dirac surface states of a 3D topological insulator (TI), coupled by proximity effect. The magnetic texture of skyrmions can lead to confinement of Dirac states at the skyrmion radius, where out of plane magnetization vanishes. This confinement can result in charging of the skyrmion texture. The presence of bound states is robust in an external magnetic field, which is needed to stabilize skyrmions. It is expected that for relevant experimental parameters skyrmions will have a few bound states that can be tuned using an external magnetic field. We argue that these charged skyrmions can be manipulated directly by an electric field, with skyrmion mobility proportional to the number of bound states at the skyrmion radius. Coupling skyrmionic thin films to a TI surface can provide a more direct and efficient way of controlling skyrmion motion in insulating materials. A fully analytical theory of a traveling soliton in a one-dimensional fermionic superfluid is developed within the framework of time-dependent self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which are solved exactly in the Andreev approximation. The soliton manifests itself in a kink-like profile of the superconducting order parameter and hosts a pair of Andreev bound states in its core. They adjust to soliton's motion and play an important role in its stabilization. A phase jump across the soliton and its energy decrease with soliton's velocity and vanish at the critical velocity, corresponding to the Landau criterion, where the soliton starts emitting quasiparticles and becomes unstable. The "inertial" and "gravitational" masses of the soliton are calculated and the former is shown to be orders of magnitude larger than the latter. This results in a slow motion of the soliton in a harmonic trap, reminiscent to the observed behavior of a soliton-like texture in related experiments in cold fermion gases [T. Yefsah et al., Nature 499, 426, (2013)]. Furthermore, we calculate the full non-linear dispersion relation of the soliton and solve the classical equations of motion in a trap. The strong non-linearity at high velocities gives rise to anharmonic oscillatory motion of the soliton. When Dirac electrons on the surface of a topological insulator are gapped, the resulting quantum anomalous Hall effect leads to universal magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr effects in the low frequency limit. However, at higher frequencies different excitations can leave their own fingerprints on the magneto-optics and can therefore be probed. In particular, we investigate the role of localized in-gap states---which inevitably appear in the presence of charged impurities---on these higher frequency magneto-optical effects. We have shown that these states resonantly contribute to the Hall conductivity and are magneto-optically active. These in-gap states lead to peculiar resonant signatures in the frequency dependence of the Faraday and Kerr angles, distinct in character to the contribution of in-gap excitonic states, and can be probed in ellipsometry measurements., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, updated following the peer review process

A topological Kondo insulator (TKI) is a strongly-correlated material, where hybridization between the conduction electrons and localized f-electrons gives rise to a crossover from a metallic behavior at high temperatures to a topologically non-trivial insulating state at low temperatures. The existing description of the TKIs is based on a slave-boson mean-field theory, which neglects dynamic fluctuation phenomena. Here, we go beyond the mean-field theory and investigate the role of Kondo fluctuations on the topological surface states. We derive an effective theory of the Dirac surface states coupled to fluctuations and show that the latter mediate strong repulsive interactions between surface excitations. We show that these effects renormalize the plasmon spectrum on the surface. Tunneling between opposite surfaces of topological insulator thin film populated by electrons and holes is considered. We predict considerable enhancement of tunneling conductivity by Cooper electron-hole pair fluctuations that are precursor of their Cooper pairing. Cooper pair fluctuations lead to the critical behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of critical temperature with critical index \nu=2. If the pairing is suppressed by disorder the behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of quantum phase transition is also critical with the index \mu=2. The effect can be interpreted as fluctuational internal Josephson effect and it is general phenomenon for electron-hole bilayers.
