The proliferation of Knowledge Graphs (KGs) that support a wide variety of applications, like entity search, question answering and recommender systems, has led to the need for identifying overlapping information among different KGs. Entity Alignment (EA) is the problem of detecting such overlapping information among KGs that refer to the same real-world entities. Recent works have shown a great potential in exploiting KG embeddings for the task of EA, with most works focusing on the structural representation of entities (i.e., entity neighborhoods) in a KG and some works also exploiting the available factual information of entities (e.g., their names and associated literal values). However, real-word KGs exhibit high levels of structural and semantic heterogeneity, making EA a challenging task in which most existing methods struggle to achieve good results. In this work, we propose HybEA, an open-source EA method that focuses on both structure and facts, using two separate attention-based models. Our experimental results show that HybEA outperforms state-of-the-art methods by at least 5% and as much as 20+% (with an average difference of 11+%) Hits@1, in 5 widely used benchmark datasets.

Modern agricultural applications rely more and more on deep learning solutions. However, training well-performing deep networks requires a large amount of annotated data that may not be available and in the case of 3D annotation may not even be feasible for human annotators. In this work, we develop a deep learning approach to segment mushrooms and estimate their pose on 3D data, in the form of point clouds acquired by depth sensors. To circumvent the annotation problem, we create a synthetic dataset of mushroom scenes, where we are fully aware of 3D information, such as the pose of each mushroom. The proposed network has a fully convolutional backbone, that parses sparse 3D data, and predicts pose information that implicitly defines both instance segmentation and pose estimation task. We have validated the effectiveness of the proposed implicit-based approach for a synthetic test set, as well as provided qualitative results for a small set of real acquired point clouds with depth sensors. Spin-glasses are Gibbs distributions that have been studied in CS for many decades. Recently, they have gained renewed attention as they emerge naturally in learning, inference, optimisation etc. We consider the Edwards-Anderson (EA) spin-glass distribution at inverse temperature $\beta$ when the underlying graph is an instance of $G(n,d/n)$. This is the random graph on $n$ vertices where each edge appears independently with probability $d/n$ and $d=\Theta(1)$. We study the problem of approximate sampling from this distribution using Glauber dynamics. For a range of $\beta$ that depends on $d$ and for typical instances of the EA model on $G(n,d/n)$, we show that the corresponding Glauber dynamics exhibits mixing time $O(n^{2+\frac{3}{\log^2 d}})$. The range of $\beta$ for which we obtain our rapid-mixing results correspond to the expected influence being $<1/d$; we conjecture that this is the best possible. Unlike the mean-field spin-glasses, where the problem has been studied before, the diluted case has not. We utilise the well-known path-coupling technique. In the standard Glauber dynamics on $G(n,d/n)$, one has to deal with the so-called effect of high degree vertices. Here, rather than considering degrees, it is more natural to use a different measure on the vertices called aggregate influence. We build on the block-construction approach proposed by [Dyer et al. 2006] to circumvent the problem of high-degree vertices. Specifically, we first establish rapid mixing for an appropriately defined block-dynamics. We design this dynamics such that vertices of large aggregate influence are placed deep inside their blocks. Then, we obtain rapid mixing for the Glauber dynamics utilising a comparison argument., Comment: 44 pages

We present novel results for fast mixing of Glauber dynamics using the newly introduced and powerful Spectral Independence method from [Anari, Liu, Oveis-Gharan: FOCS 2020]. We mainly focus on the Hard-core model and the Ising model. We obtain bounds for fast mixing with the parameters expressed in terms of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix, improving on the seminal work in [Hayes: FOCS 2006]. Furthermore, we go beyond the adjacency matrix and establish -- for the first time -- rapid mixing results for Glauber dynamics expressed in terms of the spectral radius of the Hashimoto non-backtracking matrix of the underlying graph $G$. Working with the non-backtracking spectrum is extremely challenging, but also more desirable. Its eigenvalues are less correlated with the high-degree vertices than those of the adjacency matrix and express more accurately invariants of the graph such as the growth rate. Our results require ``weak normality" from the Hashimoto matrix. This condition is mild and allows us to obtain very interesting bound. We study the pairwise influence matrix ${I}^{\Lambda,\tau}_{G}$ by exploiting the connection between the matrix and the trees of self-avoiding walks, however, we go beyond the standard treatment of the distributional recursions. The common framework that underlies our techniques we call the topological method. Our approach is novel and gives new insights into how to establish Spectral Independence for Gibbs distributions. More importantly, it allows us to derive new -- improved -- rapid mixing bounds for Glauber dynamics on distributions such as the Hard-core model and the Ising model for graphs that the spectral radius is smaller than the maximum degree., Comment: The manuscript also includes the results from arXiv:2211.03753 with shorter proofs

The frequency stability of a power system is of paramount importance, as a fast frequency swings in the system can lead to oscillatory instability, and thereby blackouts. A grid-connected microgrid, that can operate in the islanded mode can also possess such deteriorating effect due to the higher share of converter-based sources. In this paper, a coordinated frequency control within a distribution network is discussed, with a higher share of Photovoltaics (PV). The main objective of this paper is to test the grid-forming capabilities of PVs, without the requirement of an energy storage in the network. The tests were carried out with the help of the Typhoon Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform using a real Cypriot network feeder. The real-time results confirm the efficacy of the PV as a grid-forming inverter, provided it has sufficient input (irradiance) to provide for the loads within the system of interest. The variety and complexity of relations in multimedia data lead to Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs). Capturing the semantics from such networks requires approaches capable of utilizing the full richness of the HINs. Existing methods for modeling HINs employ techniques originally designed for graph neural networks, and HINs decomposition analysis, like using manually predefined metapaths. In this paper, we introduce a novel prototype-enhanced hypergraph learning approach for node classification in HINs. Using hypergraphs instead of graphs, our method captures higher-order relationships among nodes and extracts semantic information without relying on metapaths. Our method leverages the power of prototypes to improve the robustness of the hypergraph learning process and creates the potential to provide human-interpretable insights into the underlying network structure. Extensive experiments on three real-world HINs demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

The electrical power network is gradually migrating from a centralized generation approach to a decentralized generation with high shares of renewable energy sources (RES). However, power systems with low shares of synchronous generation and consequently low total system inertia, are vulnerable to power imbalances. Such systems can experience frequency stability problems, such as high frequency excursions and higher rates of change of frequency even under small disturbances. This phenomenon is intensified when the grid under investigation has low or no interconnections (islanded) and thus the challenge for stable operation becomes more significant for the operators. This work focuses on how the frequency stability is affected when a photovoltaic (PV) inverter is integrated into a real non-interconnected distribution grid in Cyprus. We present Qibolab, an open-source software library for quantum hardware control integrated with the Qibo quantum computing middleware framework. Qibolab provides the software layer required to automatically execute circuit-based algorithms on custom self-hosted quantum hardware platforms. We introduce a set of objects designed to provide programmatic access to quantum control through pulses-oriented drivers for instruments, transpilers and optimization algorithms. Qibolab enables experimentalists and developers to delegate all complex aspects of hardware implementation to the library so they can standardize the deployment of quantum computing algorithms in a extensible hardware-agnostic way, using superconducting qubits as the first officially supported quantum technology. We first describe the status of all components of the library, then we show examples of control setup for superconducting qubits platforms. We study the mixing time of the single-site update Markov chain, known as the Glauber dynamics, for generating a random independent set of a tree. Our focus is obtaining optimal convergence results for arbitrary trees. We consider the more general problem of sampling from the Gibbs distribution in the hard-core model where independent sets are weighted by a parameter $\lambda>0$; the special case $\lambda=1$ corresponds to the uniform distribution over all independent sets. Previous work of Martinelli, Sinclair and Weitz (2004) obtained optimal mixing time bounds for the complete $\Delta$-regular tree for all $\lambda$. However, Restrepo et al. (2014) showed that for sufficiently large $\lambda$ there are bounded-degree trees where optimal mixing does not hold. Recent work of Eppstein and Frishberg (2022) proved a polynomial mixing time bound for the Glauber dynamics for arbitrary trees, and more generally for graphs of bounded tree-width. We establish an optimal bound on the relaxation time (i.e., inverse spectral gap) of $O(n)$ for the Glauber dynamics for unweighted independent sets on arbitrary trees. We stress that our results hold for arbitrary trees and there is no dependence on the maximum degree $\Delta$. Interestingly, our results extend (far) beyond the uniqueness threshold which is on the order $\lambda=O(1/\Delta)$. Our proof approach is inspired by recent work on spectral independence. In fact, we prove that spectral independence holds with a constant independent of the maximum degree for any tree, but this does not imply mixing for general trees as the optimal mixing results of Chen, Liu, and Vigoda (2021) only apply for bounded degree graphs. In this proceedings we present Qibocal, an open-source software package for calibration and characterization of quantum processing units (QPUs) based on the Qibo framework. Qibocal is specifically designed for self-hosted QPUs and provides the groundwork to easily develop, deploy and distribute characterization and calibration routines for all levels of hardware abstraction. Qibocal is based on a modular QPU platform agnostic approach and it provides a general purpose toolkit for superconducting qubits with the possibility of extensions to other quantum technologies. After motivating the need for such a module, we explain the program's flow and show examples of actual use for QPU calibration. Motivated by the theory of spin-glasses in physics, we study the so-called reconstruction problem for the related distributions on the tree, and on the sparse random graph $G(n,d/n)$. Both cases, reduce naturally to studying broadcasting models on the tree, where each edge has its own broadcasting matrix, and this matrix is drawn independently from a predefined distribution. In this context, we study the effect of the configuration at the root to that of the vertices at distance $h$, as $h\to\infty$. We establish the reconstruction threshold for the cases where the broadcasting matrices give rise to symmetric, 2-spin Gibbs distributions. This threshold seems to be a natural extension of the well-known Kesten-Stigum bound which arises in the classic version of the reconstruction problem. Our results imply, as a special case, the reconstruction threshold for the well-known Edward-Anderson model of spin-glasses on the tree. Also, we extend our analysis to the setting of the Galton-Watson tree, and the random graph $G(n,d/n)$, where we establish the corresponding thresholds.Interestingly, for the Edward-Anderson model on the random graph, we show that the replica symmetry breaking phase transition, established in [Guerra and Toninelli:2004], coincides with the reconstruction threshold. Compared to the classical Gibbs distributions, the spin-glasses have a lot of unique features. In that respect, their study calls for new ideas, e.g., we introduce novel estimators for the reconstruction problem. Furthermore, note that the main technical challenge in the analysis is the presence of (too) many levels of randomness. We manage to circumvent this problem by utilising recently proposed tools coming from the analysis of Markov chains.

We study the single-site Glauber dynamics for the fugacity $\lambda$, Hard-core model on the random graph $G(n, d/n)$. We show that for the typical instances of the random graph $G(n,d/n)$ and for fugacity $\lambda < \frac{d^d}{(d-1)^{d+1}}$, the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is $n^{1 + O(1/\log \log n)}$. Our result improves on the recent elegant algorithm in [Bezakova, Galanis, Goldberg Stefankovic; ICALP'22]. The algorithm there is a MCMC based sampling algorithm, but it is not the Glauber dynamics. Our algorithm here is simpler, as we use the classic Glauber dynamics. Furthermore, the bounds on mixing time we prove are smaller than those in Bezakova et al. paper, hence our algorithm is also faster. The main challenge in our proof is handling vertices with unbounded degrees. We provide stronger results with regard the spectral independence via branching values and show that the our Gibbs distributions satisfy the approximate tensorisation of the entropy. We conjecture that the bounds we have here are optimal for $G(n,d/n)$. As corollary of our analysis for the Hard-core model, we also get bounds on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for the Monomer-dimer model on $G(n,d/n)$. The bounds we get for this model are slightly better than those we have for the Hard-core model

Symmetry protected optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) are charming wave-mechanical objects that provide new and exciting ways to enhance light-matter interactions in compact photonic devices. These ultrahigh quality factor states have quickly transcended from passive structures, and lasing devices in the weak-coupling regime, towards nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of BIC polaritons in the strong-coupling regime. Here, we show that the large interaction strength of exciton-polaritons in subwavelength quantum-well waveguide gratings in conjunction with their topologically protected BIC nature opens unexplored opportunities in low-threshold optically reprogrammable quantum fluids. The BIC causes polaritons to -- almost counterintuitively -- condense in the extremum of a negative mass dispersion which leads to strong interaction-induced trapping at their respective pump spot and gain region. We exploit this optical trapping mechanism to demonstrate macroscopic mode-hybridization, the hallmark of coherent quantum systems, enabling construction of never-seen-before artificial BIC molecules with unusual topological charge mutliplicity. We underpin the optical write-in aspect of our technique by constructing, on the same sample, artificial mono-atomic and dimerized BIC chains of polariton fluids displaying non-Hermitian quasicrystalline band formation and gap opening. Our findings open new perspectives on large-scale reprogrammable driven dissipative many-body systems in the strong-coupling regime.

Recent advances in NLU and NLP have resulted in renewed interest in natural language interfaces to data, which provide an easy mechanism for non-technical users to access and query the data. While early systems evolved from keyword search and focused on simple factual queries, the complexity of both the input sentences as well as the generated SQL queries has evolved over time. More recently, there has also been a lot of focus on using conversational interfaces for data analytics, empowering a line of non-technical users with quick insights into the data. There are three main challenges in natural language querying (NLQ): (1) identifying the entities involved in the user utterance, (2) connecting the different entities in a meaningful way over the underlying data source to interpret user intents, and (3) generating a structured query in the form of SQL or SPARQL. There are two main approaches for interpreting a user's NLQ. Rule-based systems make use of semantic indices, ontologies, and KGs to identify the entities in the query, understand the intended relationships between those entities, and utilize grammars to generate the target queries. With the advances in deep learning (DL)-based language models, there have been many text-to-SQL approaches that try to interpret the query holistically using DL models. Hybrid approaches that utilize both rule-based techniques as well as DL models are also emerging by combining the strengths of both approaches. Conversational interfaces are the next natural step to one-shot NLQ by exploiting query context between multiple turns of conversation for disambiguation. In this article, we review the background technologies that are used in natural language interfaces, and survey the different approaches to NLQ. We present novel results for fast mixing of Glauber dynamics using the newly introduced and powerful Spectral Independence method from [Anari, Liu, Oveis-Gharan: FOCS 2020]. In our results, the parameters of the Gibbs distribution are expressed in terms of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of $G$, or that of the Hashimoto non-backtracking matrix. The analysis relies on new techniques that we introduce to bound the maximum eigenvalue of the pairwise influence matrix $\mathcal{I}^{\Lambda,\tau}_{G}$ for the two spin Gibbs distribution $\mu$. There is a common framework that underlies these techniques which we call the topological method. The idea is to systematically exploit the well-known connections between $\mathcal{I}^{\Lambda,\tau}_{G}$ and the topological construction called tree of self-avoiding walks. Our approach is novel and gives new insights to the problem of establishing spectral independence for Gibbs distributions. More importantly, it allows us to derive new -- improved -- rapid mixing bounds for Glauber dynamics on distributions such as the Hard-core model and the Ising model for graphs that the spectral radius is smaller than the maximum degree.

In this proceedings we present quantum machine learning optimization experiments using stochastic gradient descent with the parameter shift rule algorithm. We first describe the gradient evaluation algorithm and its optimization procedure implemented using the Qibo framework. After numerically testing the implementation using quantum simulation on classical hardware, we perform successfully a full quantum hardware optimization exercise using a single superconducting qubit chip controlled by Qibo. In recent years, we have witnessed the proliferation of knowledge graphs (KG) in various domains, aiming to support applications like question answering, recommendations, etc. A frequent task when integrating knowledge from different KGs is to find which subgraphs refer to the same real-world entity. Recently, embedding methods have been used for entity alignment tasks, that learn a vector-space representation of entities which preserves their similarity in the original KGs. A wide variety of supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised methods have been proposed that exploit both factual (attribute based) and structural information (relation based) of entities in the KGs. Still, a quantitative assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in real-world KGs according to different performance metrics and KG characteristics is missing from the literature. In this work, we conduct the first meta-level analysis of popular embedding methods for entity alignment, based on a statistically sound methodology. Our analysis reveals statistically significant correlations of different embedding methods with various meta-features extracted by KGs and rank them in a statistically significant way according to their effectiveness across all real-world KGs of our testbed. Quantum technologies are moving towards the development of novel hardware devices based on quantum bits (qubits). In parallel to the development of quantum devices, efficient simulation tools are needed in order to design and benchmark quantum algorithms and applications before deployment on quantum hardware. In this context, we present a first attempt to perform circuit-based quantum simulation using the just-in-time (JIT) compilation technique on multiple hardware architectures and configurations based on single-node central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs). One of the major challenges in scientific code development is to balance the level of complexity between algorithms and programming techniques without losing performance or degrading code readability. In this context, we have developed qibojit: a new module for the Qibo quantum computing framework, which uses a just-in-time compilation approach through Python. We perform systematic performance benchmarks between our JIT approach and a subset of relevant publicly available libraries for quantum computing. In this proceedings we describe the current development status and recent technical achievements of Qibo, an open-source framework for quantum simulation. After a concise overview of the project goal, we introduce the modular layout for backend abstraction released in version 0.1.7. We discuss the advantages of each backend choice with particular emphasis on hardware accelerators for quantum state vector simulation.
