Abstract

The neutron physics group at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) has been involved in a program of scattering cross-section measurements for highly deformed nuclei such as 159Tb, 169Tm, 232Th, 235U, 238U, and 239Pu. Ko et al. have reported neutron inelastic scattering data from 169Tm for states above 100 keV via the (n,n′γ) reaction at incident energies in the 0.2 MeV to 1.0 MeV range. In the present research, in which the time-of-flight method was employed, direct (n,n′) measurements of neutrons scattered from 169Tm in the 0.2 to 1.0 MeV range were taken. It requires that our 5.5-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator be operated in the pulsed and bunched beam mode producing subnanosecond pulses at a 5-MHz repetition frequency. Neutrons are produced by the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction using a thin metallic elemental lithium target. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Measurement of Difference in Decay Rate for 7Be in Li and 7Be in Ta

Abstract

The difference in decay rate for 7Be in Ta and 7Be in Li was measured and found to be (6.43 ± 0.76) x 10-4wk-1, making the relative difference in decay rate ∆λ/λ= (0.71 ± 0.09)%. The probability of decay by electron capture is proportional to the density of electrons at the 7Be nucleus; therefore, 7Be nuclei in different chemical environments may decay at measurably different rates. Most previous measurements for different chemical combinations of 7Be have found ∆λ/λto be on the order of 10-4to 10-3. A quasi-differential counting method was used in the current experiment wherein two samples are alternately placed in front of a high-purity germanium detector (HPGe) and the number of counts recorded. A plot of the ratio of counting rates vs. time yielded a straight-line whose slope was proportional to ∆λ.The proportionality constant was determined from the intercept of this plot.

27. Neutron Inelastic Scattering Cross Sections From 159Tb(n, nʹϒ)

Abstract

Scattering cross sections for fast neutrons were investigated for low-lying levels of 159Tb by a Ge detector with a NaI(Tl) Compton suppression annulus in conjunction with the pulsed-beam time-of-flight technique. Thirty-eight transitions from 27 levels were observed and differential gamma-ray production cross sections for the 159Tb(n, n, nʹϒ) reaction were measured at 125° for incident neutron energies from 400 to 1000 keV. Level cross sections were also inferred. Neutron scattering cross sections for the states at 241, 348, 363.5, 535 and 580.7 keV are compared to the ENDF/B-VI, JEF-2, and JENDL-3 evaluations.

33. The Lombard Reflex: Historical Perspective

Abstract

There is little agreement concerning the method of introducing the noise in administering the Lombard Voice Reflex test. The clinical use of the test has been based on an incomplete description by Weiss. Lombard's original work published one year later, provides the complete description of test procedures as he derived them. Lombard described procedures for noting vocal intensity increase and especially provided specific procedures for presenting the noise to the patient. The adoption of Lombard's clinical procedures can eliminate the division of opinion which presently exists and provide a starting point for investigating work to standardize the Lombard Voice Reflex.

35. Use of the Lombard Response in Cases of Hysterical Aphonia

Abstract

• Lombard is best known for his work on the effect of noise on vocal intensity. In 1917, he applied this concept to the treatment of hysterical aphonia and described the procedure he used in a military publication. He suggested that a masking noise will interfere with the auditory monitoring system sufficiently that the patient will not be aware he has regained use of phonation. Removal of the noise from the patient's ears confirms the return of phonation, and the aphonia disappears. Credit is given to Lombard for this pioneering effort, and suggestions for present-day clinical use are made.(Arch Otolaryngol 101:557, 1975)
