2. Co-optimization of Operational Unit Commitment and Reserve Power Scheduling for Modern Grid

Abstract

Modern power grids combine conventional generators with distributed energy resource (DER) generators in response to concerns over climate change and long-term energy security. Due to the intermittent nature of DERs, different types of energy storage devices (ESDs) must be installed to minimize unit commitment problems and accommodate spinning reserve power. ESDs have operational and resource constraints, such as charge and discharge rates or maximum and minimum state of charge (SoC). This paper proposes a linear programming (LP) optimization framework to maximize the unit-committed power for a specific optimum spinning reserve power for a particular power grid. Using this optimization framework, we also determine the total dispatchable power, non-dispatchable power, spinning reserve power, and arbitrage power using DER and ESD resource constraints. To describe the ESD and DER constraints, this paper evaluates several factors: availability, dispatchability, non-dispatchability, spinning reserve, and arbitrage factor. These factors are used as constraints in this LP optimization to determine the total optimal reserve power from the existing DERs. The proposed optimization framework maximizes the ratio of dispatchable to non-dispatchable power to minimize unit commitment problems within a specific range of spinning reserve power set to each DER. This optimization framework is implemented in the modified IEEE 34-bus distribution system, adding ten DERs in ten different buses to verify its efficacy.

7. An Evaluation of SeeC: A Tool Designed to Assist Novice C Programmers with Program Understanding and Debugging

Abstract

Background and Context: Students learning the C programming language struggle to debug, and to understand the runtime behaviour of, their programs. Objective: We examine a tool that combines several novice-focused error detection, program visualization, and debugging techniques, to investigate which features students use in real study sessions, which features they consider effective, and whether or not the tool can effectively assist students with debugging tasks. Method: This study employed a mixed-methods approach. First, we record participants' interactions with the tool during their regular coursework by instrumenting the tool itself. Second, we collected interaction recordings and screen capture recordings of students using the tool to perform set debugging tasks. Finally we surveyed students who participated in the second part of the study, to investigate their perceptions of the tool. Findings: Students used the tool's runtime error detection and execution trace reviewing features to find and investigate bugs during their coursework. In set debugging tasks, even students with no previous experience of the tool were able to use it effectively with little to no assistance. Students were positive about the tool, but suggested a number of user interface improvements. Implications: Novice-focused program visualization and debugging tools for the C programming language can assist students with complicated debugging tasks encountered during their regular coursework. Simple, user-friendly interfaces are important in such tools, and may motivate their use (in preference to debugging tools designed for developers).

30. Knowledge exchange in crisis settings:A scoping review

Abstract

Background: Public health practice and efforts to improve the social determinants of health operate within a climate characterised by multiple and intersecting crises. This includes the Covid-19 pandemic as well as more protracted crises such as climate change and persistent social inequalities that impact health. We sought to understand and compare how knowledge exchange (KE) processes occur across different crises, and how knowledge on improving social determinants of health can be utilised at times of crisis to reduce health inequalities and strengthen public systems. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to understand how KE on improving social determinants of health can occur across different types of crises (e.g. environmental, pandemics, humanitarian). Relevant studies were identified through electronic searching of Medline, EMBASE, Global Health, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Results: We identified 86 studies for inclusion in the review. Most studies concerned pandemic or environmental crises. Fewer studies explored KE during technical (e.g. nuclear), terror-related or humanitarian crises. This may reflect a limitation of the searches. Few studies assessed KE as part of longer-term responses to social and economic impacts of crises, with studies more likely to focus on immediate response or early recovery stages. Exchange of research evidence or data with policy or practice contextual knowledge was common but there was variation in the extent that lay (public) knowledge was included as part of KE processes. Conclusion: As ongoing crises continue with significant public health implications, KE processes should appropriately reflect the complexity inherent in crises and foreground health inequalities. Doing so could include the utilisation of systems or complexity-informed methods to support planning and evaluation of KE, a greater focus on KE to support action to address social determinants of health, and the inclusion of a plurality of knowledge–incl
