1. Exhumation history of the southern Altiplano plateau (southern Bolivia) constrained by apatite fission track thermochronology

Abstract

[1] Although the structural geometry of the Cenozoic Altiplano-Puna plateau in the central Andes is well defined, the temporal evolution of this contractile deformation is poorly constrained. To address this shortcoming, we used apatite fission track thermochronology (AFT) to quantify the cooling and exhumation history along a transect at 21[degrees]S in southern Bolivia, through the deformed intermontane Altiplano basin, the doubly vergent thrust belt of the Eastern Cordillera and the inner foreland thrust belt east of the plateau (Interandean Zone). Thermal history modeling combined with published balanced cross sections and stratigraphic data constrain exhumation histories. Exhumation started during the late Eocene (40-36 Ma) in the central Eastern Cordillera, possibly due to bivergent thrusting and Cretaceous rift structure inversion. During the early Oligocene (33-27 Ma), exhumation spread across the study area as the current boundary thrusts of the Eastern Cordillera were activated. The inner west vergent thrust system became active in irregular order until circa 20 Ma, whereas the east vergent Interandean thrust belt formed by eastward propagating deformation since circa 30 Ma. Plateau exhumation continued at ~0.2 mm/yr until shortening terminated by 11-7 Ma. Shortening within the plateau since circa 30 Ma did not evolve by lateral accretion of thrust wedges; the propagating deformation style is spatially confined to the foreland thrust belt, which initiated coeval to plateau deformation (Interandean Zone) but propagated mainly after circa 10 Ma (Subandean Zone). Early Oligocene plateau-wide tectonically driven exhumation suggests that subduction-related processes had already thermally weakened the continental lithosphere prior to the 2725 Ma onset of volcanic activity. Abstract

Abstract Background Amber necklaces have been used frequently to reduce the complaints of babies during teething. In this study, the knowledge and experience of families regarding the use of amber necklaces investigated. Methods The structured questionnaire was applied face-to-face to parents with a 4–24 month old baby who applied to the paediatric outpatient clinic. Results One hundred one families participating in the study reported that they used the amber necklace most frequently for restlessness (n = 72, 71.3%). Eighty- three% of families reported that the amber necklace was beneficial. It determined that 2% of the babies had suffocation and 2% had problems dispersing the grains. Conclusion Although the parents think that the use of amber necklaces is effective during the teething period, they are not aware of the risks. It is important for healthcare professionals to inform their families about teething and especially the risks of using amber necklaces.

7. Cancer Incidence, Mortality and Survival in Türkiye as of 2020

Abstract

Cancer registration is better understood with the Globocan project. In our article, we compiled the cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data of Türkiye. We presented incidence and mortality related data from the Global Cancer Observatory, and survival related data from CONCORD-3. Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) were excluded from interpretations for all indicators. The number of new cancer cases in Türkiye with a population of more than 80 million was estimated as 227,310 people in total, 128,802 in men and 98,508 women. In the same year, 125,788 people was estimated that died due to cancer, of which 78,633 were men and 47,155 were women. The age-standardized incidence rate per 100,000 (ASIR, world standard population) of all cancers except for NMSC was estimated to be 225.6 (283.0 for men and 184.0 for women). The five most common cancers were breast cancer with the ASIR of 46.6, following prostate cancer (ASIR = 42.5), lung cancer (ASIR = 40.0), colorectal cancer (ASIR = 20.6), and thyroid cancer (ASIR = 14.3). The age-standardized mortality rate per 100,000 (ASMR, world standard population) of all cancers was estimated to be 119.9 (171.0 for men, 81.1 for women). The top 5 most common cancers for both sexes and all age groups were lung, breast, colorectal, prostate and thyroid cancers, respectively. On the other hand, the top 5 most common cancer-caused deaths for both sexes and all age groups were lung, colorectal, stomach, pancreas, breast cancers, respectively. The top 5 cancers with worst 5-year age-standardized net survival rate for the sites of cancers in Türkiye between 2010 and 2014 were as follows: pancreas 10.4%, lung 14.9%, liver 15.9%, esophagus 19.0% and stomach 24.9%. Not only existing and increasing potential behavioral and possible environmental risk factors by time are a public health threat for Türkiye, but also some unchangeable factors e.g. the aging population and the prolongation of life expectancy are contributing increasing cancer incidence. In addition to incidence data, mortality and survival data are also considered, preventive strategies with public health principle should be strengthened. In addition, population-based cancer registries and research on cancer epidemiology based on the data released from these registries should be supported.

This paper considers statistical inference procedures for a class of models for positively correlated count variables called $\alpha$-permanental random fields, and which can be viewed as a family of multivariate negative binomial distributions. Their appealing probabilistic properties have earlier been studied in the literature, while this is the first statistical paper on $\alpha$-permanental random fields. The focus is on maximum likelihood estimation, maximum quasi-likelihood estimation and on maximum composite likelihood estimation based on uni- and bivariate distributions. Furthermore, new results for $\alpha$-permanents and for a bivariate $\alpha$-permanental random field are presented. 9. Score, pseudo-score and residual diagnostics for goodness-of-fit of spatial point process models

Abstract

We develop new tools for formal inference and informal model validation in the analysis of spatial point pattern data. The score test is generalised to a ‘pseudo-score’ test derived from Besag’s pseudolikelihood, and to a class of diagnostics based on point process residuals. The results lend theoretical support to the established practice of using functional summary statistics such as Ripley’s K-function, when testing for complete spatial randomness; and they provide new tools such as the compensator of the K-function for testing other fitted models. The results also support localisation methods such as the scan statistic and smoothed residual plots. Software for computing the diagnostics is provided. Abstract

Objectives: The prevalence of obesity and overweight in children has been increasing rapidly worldwide and threatens society with various chronic diseases that these children are born with. High-protein ketogenic diets and intermittent nutrition are thought to be protective against obesity and metabolic syndrome MetS. However, the exact effects and results, insulin resistance, and the role of leptin in the functioning mechanism of these diets have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of insulin resistance and leptin hormone on the effects of body composition with a high-protein ketogenic diet and intermittent nutrition combination., Methods: Thirty-two young non-obese rats were randomly divided into four equal groups. Both the standard diet and the high-protein ketogenic diet were given ad libitum and intermittently to the rats for 6 wk. The body weight and fat mass of the rats were measured at the end of the experiment. The fasting glucose, leptin, insulin, high- and low-density lipoprotein, and triacylglycerols were measured with the blood samples., Results: The lowest body weight was observed in the intermittent and high-protein ketogenic diet group, followed by the free high-protein ketogenic diet and standard intermittent diet group, respectively. Also, the lowest body fat mass was observed in the intermittent and high-protein ketogenic diet group, followed by the standard intermittent diet group. Abstract

The medicinal plant of Styrax liquidus (ST) (sweet gum balsam) which extracted from Liquidambar orientalis Mill tree, was loaded into the 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA)/chitosan (CS) based 3D printed scaffolds to investigate its wound healing and closure effect, in this study. The morphological and chemical properties of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with different concentrations (1 %, 2 %, and 3 % wt) were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of the materials were investigated by Tensile test and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The antimicrobial activities of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds and their incubation media in the PBS (pH 7.4, at 37 °C for 24 h) were investigated on two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative standard pathogenic bacteria with the agar disc diffusion method. The colorimetric MTT assay was used to determine the cell viability of human fibroblast cells (CCD-1072Sk) incubated with free ST, ST loaded, and unloaded 3D printed scaffolds. The 1 % and 2 % (wt) ST loaded PLA/CS/ST 3D printed scaffolds showed an increase in the cell number. Annexin V/PI double stain assay was performed to test whether early or late apoptosis was induced in the PLA/CS/1 % ST and PLA/CS/2 % ST loaded groups and the results were consistent with the MTT assay. Furthermore, a wound healing assay was carried out to investigate the effect of ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds on wound healing in CCD-1072Sk cells. The highest wound closure compared to the control group was observed on cells treated with PLA/CS/1 % ST for 72 h. Abstract

Diabetic wounds have a slow healing process and easy to be infected. In addition to current drug treatments, supportive approaches are needed for diabetic wound treatment. In this study, we aimed to load Aloe Vera (AV) and Hypericum perforatum oil (HPO) with PCL/Ge (Poly (ɛ-caprolactone)/Gelatine) polymeric biodegradable by electrospinning method into nanofiber dressings on an experimental diabetic wound model to compare the diabetic wound healing effect. Changes in the amount and chemical structure of phospholipids, proteins, and lipids were investigated in the blood and serum samples of the animals using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. To evaluate biological events associated with the wound repair process in inflammatory phase we used oxidant and antioxidant status to determine the healing status of wounds such as Total antioxidant status (TAS), Total oxidant level (TOS) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels. TOS level increased in DM groups and decreased in the AV and HPO group. Oxidative stress index decreased and TNF-α level increased in the HPO group. FTIR spectra showed changes in the phospholipids, proteins, and carbon chain of lipids in the whole blood as well as serum of DM rats. FTIR spectra combined with Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, that treated DM rats by AV and HPO caused return chemical structure of blood and serum to this observed in control group. Higher similarity with control group for HPO rats was observed. HPO is better than AV in the alternative for healing on diabetic wound. Abstract

Absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) recovery after autologous stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma (MM) has been reported to be an independent prognostic factor for clinical outcome. The role of ALC on survival in newly diagnosed untreated MM patients is unknown. Between 1994 and 2002, we analysed retrospectively 537 MM patients of 1835 consecutive MM patients that were neither uniformly treated nor part of a clinical trail, but originally diagnosed and followed at the Mayo Clinic. The primary endpoint was to assess the role of ALC at the time of MM diagnosis on overall survival (OS). The median follow-up was 35.1 months (range: 1-152.5 months). ALC, as a continuous variable, was identified as prognostic factor for OS (Hazard ratio = 0.473, 95% confidence interval = 0.359-0.618, P < 0.0001). MM patients with an ALC >/=1.4 x 10(9)/l experienced superior OS compared with MM patients with an ALC <1.4 x 10(9)/l (65 vs. 26 months, P < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis identified ALC as an independent prognostic factor for OS. This study showed that, in newly diagnosed MM, ALC is an independent prognostic factor for OS, suggesting a significant role of host immune status in the survival of MM.

Abstract

This study was retrospectively designed to examine if the Wiktor stent, a balloon-expandable tantalum coil stent, provides a more favorable procedural and long-term clinical and angiographic outcome than does conventional coronary balloon angioplasty (POBA). From April 1995 to April 1996, we implanted 56 Wiktor stents in 46 lesions (LAD: 23, RCA: 16, CX: 7) in 42 patients (average age 53 +/- 10 years). Coronary lesions from the stent group were matched with similar lesions of another 42 POBA patients whose characteristics were identical to the Wiktor group. Revascularization indications in the Wiktor and POBA groups, respectively, were recent myocardial infarction (RMI) (45%, 40%), unstable (31%, 39%) and stable (24%, 21%) angina pectoris. 7% of the stents and 17% of the POBA balloons were less than 3 mm in diameter (p > 0.05). Procedural success was significantly greater in the Wiktor group than in the POBA group (100% vs. 92%, p < 0.05). Neither major cardiac event (death, CABG, acute myocardial infarction) nor (sub)acute occlusion was encountered in the Wiktor group during the hospitalization period and 1 month follow-up. There was 1 urgent CABG and 4 subacute occlusions in the POBA group. Control angiography at 8 months was performed in patients of both groups, of whom some were symptomatic at long-term follow-up or completely event free for 8 months. Angiographic restenosis (> 50% diameter stenosis) occurred in 25% of the Wiktor patients and in 43% of those in the POBA group (p < 0.05). For an 18 month clinical follow-up, 91% of the patients in the Wiktor group were asymptomatic and without ischemia in radionuclide imaging (RI), whereas 79% of the POBA patients were angina-free and 74% were without ischemia in the RI study. In conclusion, Wiktor stent implantation, with no major cardiac event or subacute occlusion, provides a more favorable procedural and long-term clinical and angiographic outcome than does conventional POBA.
