Abstract

Seascape ecology, the marine-centric counterpart to landscape ecology, is rapidly emerging as an interdisciplinary and spatially explicit ecological science with relevance to marine management, bio-diversity conservation, and restoration. While important progress in this field has been made in the past decade, there has been no coherent prioritisation of key research questions to help set the future research agenda for seascape ecology. We used a 2-stage modified Delphi method to solicit applied research questions from academic experts in seascape ecology and then asked respondents to identify priority questions across 9 interrelated research themes using 2 rounds of selection. We also invited senior management/conservation practitioners to prioritise the same research questions. Analyses highlighted congruence and discrepancies in perceived priorities for applied research. Themes related to both ecological concepts and management practice, and those identified as priorities include seascape change, seascape connectivity, spatial and temporal scale, ecosystem-based management, and emerging technologies and metrics. Highest-priority questions (upper tercile) received 50% agreement between respondent groups, and lowest priorities (lower tercile) received 58% agreement. Across all 3 priority tiers, 36 of the 55 questions were within a +/- 10% band of agreement. We present the most important applied research questions as determined by the proportion of votes received. For each theme, we provide a synthesis of the research challenges and the potential role of seascape ecology. These priority questions and themes serve as a roadmap for advancing applied seascape ecology during, and beyond, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

Abstract

Despite a large body of experimental work on asymmetry-induced transport in non-neutral plasmas, the correct theory remains elusive. Previous work using single particle computer simulations has shown that the particle dynamics in such systems can be quite complex. In this paper, the techniques of chaos theory are employed in an effort to better understand these dynamics. The dynamical equations are re-conceptualized as describing time-independent trajectories in a four-dimensional space consisting of the radius r, rotating frame angle , axial position z, and axial velocity v. Initial work includes identification of an integral of the motion, fixed-point analysis of the dynamical equations, the construction and interpretation of Poincaré sections to visualize the dynamics, and, for the case of chaotic motion, numerical calculation of the largest Lyapunov exponent using the technique of Benettin et. al. Abstract

Our initial experiments on asymmetry-induced transport in non-neutral plasmas found the radial particle flux at small radii to be proportional to Phi (sup 2)(sub a) where Phi (sub a) is the applied asymmetry amplitude. Other researchers, however, using the global expansion rate as a measure of the transport, have observed a Phi(sup 2)(sub a) scaling when the rigidity (the ratio of the axial bounce frequency to the azimuthal rotation frequency) is in the range one to ten. In an effort to resolve this discrepancy, we have extended our measurements to different radii and asymmetry frequencies. Although the results to date are generally in agreement with those previously reported Phi(sup 2)(sub a) scaling at low asymmetry amplitudes falling off to a weaker scaling at higher amplitudes), we have observed some cases where the low amplitude scaling is closer to Phi(sup 1)(sub a). Both the Phi(sup 2)(sub a) and Phi(sup 1)(sub a) cases, however, have rigidities less than ten. Instead, we find that the Phi(sup 1)(sub a) cases are characterized by an induced flux that is comparable in magnitude but opposite in sign to the background flux. Abstract

A flight control system for use in air-to-air combat simulation was designed. The input to the flight control system are commanded bank angle and angle of attack, the output are commands to the control surface actuators such that the commanded values will be achieved in near minimum time and sideslip is controlled to remain small. For the longitudinal direction, a conventional linear control system with gains scheduled as a function of dynamic pressure is employed. For the lateral direction, a novel control system, consisting of a linear portion for small bank angle errors and a bang-bang control system for large errors and error rates is employed.
