Two designs of square-celled metallic honeycomb structures fabricated by a modified extrusion technology based on a powder feedstock were investigated. The strength and ductility of these cellular materials are achieved by an austenitic CrNi (AISI 304) steel matrix particle reinforced by an MgO partially-stabilized zirconia building up their cell wall microstructure. Similar to the mechanical behaviour of the bulk materials, the strengthening mechanism and the martensitic phase transformations in the cell walls are affected by the deformation temperature and the nominal strain rate. The microstructure evolution during quasi-static and dynamic impact compression up to high strain rates of 103 1/s influences the buckling and failure behaviour of the honeycomb structures. In contrast to bending-dominated quasi-isotropic networks like open-celled metal foams, axial compressive loading to the honeycomb’s channels causes membrane stretching as well as crushing of the vertical cell node elements and cell walls. The presented honeycomb materials differ geometrically in their cell wall thickness-to-cell size-ratio. Therefore, the failure behaviour is predominantly controlled by global buckling and torsional-flexural buckling, respectively, accompanied by plastic matrix flow and strengthening of the cell wall microstructure.

The aim of the study is to clarify how far it is possible to describe the mechanical behavior of novel TRIP-Steel/Mg-PSZ composite open-cell foam structures using beam networks generated from random tessellations. Conventional compression tests were performed with various foam samples. Furthermore, the deformation of open-cell composite foams was observed as well by X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Up to a compressive strain of 20% different stages of deformation could be observed. Respective bulk samples were manufactured by powder metallurgy and tested in order to determine the mechanical properties of the bulk material. Numerical simulations were employed based on the suitable modeling of foams exposed to mechanical loading. The tumour immune microenvironment (TIME) in breast cancer is acknowledged with an increasing role in treatment response and prognosis. With a growing number of immune markers analysed, digital image analysis may facilitate broader TIME understanding, even in single-plex IHC data. To facilitate analyses of the latter an open-source image analysis pipeline, Tissue microarray MArker Quantification (TMArQ), was developed and applied to single-plex stainings for p53, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD68, FOXP3, and PD-L1 (SP142 antibody) in a 218-patient triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cohort with complementary pathology scorings, clinicopathological, whole genome sequencing, and RNA-sequencing data. TMArQ's cell counts for analysed immune markers were on par with results from alternative methods and consistent with both estimates from human pathology review, different quantifications and classifications derived from RNA-sequencing as well as known prognostic patterns of immune response in TNBC. The digital cell counts demonstrated how immune markers are coexpressed in the TIME when considering TNBC molecular subtypes and DNA repair deficiency, and how combination of immune status with DNA repair deficiency status can improve the prognostic stratification in chemotherapy treated patients. A growing body of research supports stromal tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density in breast cancer to be a robust prognostic and predicive biomarker. The gold standard for stromal TIL density quantitation in breast cancer is pathologist visual assessment using haematoxylin and eosin-stained slides. Artificial intelligence/machine-learning algorithms are in development to automate the stromal TIL scoring process, and must be validated against a reference standard such as pathologist visual assessment. Visual TIL assessment may suffer from significant interobserver variability. To improve interobserver agreement, regulatory science experts at the US Food and Drug Administration partnered with academic pathologists internationally to create a freely available online continuing medical education (CME) course to train pathologists in assessing breast cancer stromal TILs using an interactive format with expert commentary. Here we describe and provide a user guide to this CME course, whose content was designed to improve pathologist accuracy in scoring breast cancer TILs. Background: Differential diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is challenging. Sineoculis homeobox homolog 1 (SIX1) is an oncogene involved in skeletal muscle differentiation. We compared protein expression patterns of SIX1 in RMS and its most common differential diagnoses. Methods: SIX1 immunohistochemistry in 36 RMS and in 33 tumors from seven differential diagnostic subtypes were evaluated. The fraction of SIX1 positive tumor cells was scored by three independent observers. Results: A majority (75%) of the evaluated RMS expressed SIX1 in at least 50% of tumor cells and all except one RMS had more than 25% positive tumor cells. Neuroblastoma had less than 1% SIX1 positive tumor cells. Gonadoblastoma, malignant rhabdoid tumor, and Ewing sarcoma had 10% or less positive tumor cells. Pleuropulmonary blastoma exhibited 26-50% positive tumor cells and synovial sarcoma >50% positive cells. Conclusion: SIX1 immunohistochemistry is positive in most RMS, and occasionally in some tumors within the differential diagnoses of RMS.

Septic shock, a serious consequence of disseminated infection that has a high mortality, is due to a dysregulated, severe immune response triggered by the infection. Acute phase reactants play key roles in sepsis, for example, hepcidin regulating iron metabolism. Reticulocyte haemoglobin (Ret-He) depends on available iron in blood, indirectly regulated by hepcidin. This study aimed at exploring rapid changes in hepcidin and Ret-He in patients with septic shock receiving adequate antibiotic treatment. Fifteen patients, included within an hour of admission to the intensive care unit, were evaluated by microbiological tests and cultures, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score, and plasma levels of hepcidin, Ret-He, heparin-binding protein (HBP), leucocytes, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin (PCT), and lactate. Samples were taken every morning for 7 consecutive days. Maximal levels of hepcidin (median 61 nmol/L; reference 1-12 nmol/L) were seen at the time of inclusion, then declining steadily similar to PCT and lactate levels. Ret-He values decreased transiently in response to increased hepcidin, normalization occurred at 96 h upon decrease of hepcidin levels. Maximal levels of HBP were noted 24 h after inclusion. In conclusion, hepcidin promptly declined within the first 24 h in patients with septic shock receiving adequate antibiotic treatment in contrast to Ret-He and HBP., (© 2020 The Author(s) Published by S. The implementation of hollow S60HS glass microspheres and Fillite 106 cenospheres in a martensitically transformable AISI 304L stainless steel matrix was realized by means of metal injection molding of feedstock with varying fractions of the filler material. The so-called TRIP-steel syntactic foams were studied with respect to their behavior under quasi-static compression and dynamic impact loading. The interplay between matrix material behavior and foam structure was discussed in relation to the findings of micro-structural investigations, electron back scatter diffraction EBSD phase analyses and magnetic measurements. During processing, the cenospheres remained relatively stable retaining their shape while the glass microspheres underwent disintegration associated with the formation of pre-cracked irregular inclusions. Consequently, the AISI 304L/Fillite 106 syntactic foams exhibited a higher compression stress level and energy absorption capability as compared to the S60HS-containing variants. The α ′ -martensite kinetic of the steel matrix was significantly influenced by material composition, strain rate and arising deformation temperature. The highest ferromagnetic α ′ -martensite phase fraction was detected for the AISI 304L/S60HS batches and the lowest for the TRIP-steel bulk material. Quasi-adiabatic sample heating, a gradual decrease in strain rate and an enhanced degree of damage controlled the mechanical deformation response of the studied syntactic foams under dynamic impact loading.

Two groups of children were compared to determine the effects of early middle ear pathology on the development of auditory perceptual skills and academic achievement. The conductive loss (CL) group consisted of 15 children, aged seven to nine years, with histories of middle ear pathology. The normal control (NC) group was matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status and had negative histories of middle ear pathology. Both groups were from a suburban community of primarily mild socioeconomic status. A test battery consisting of 12 auditory perceptual tests as well as measures of academic achievement, non-verbal intelligence and visual perception was administered. Results showed that the overall performance of the CL group on the test battery was significantly lower than that of the NC group. Performance of the CL group was also significantly lower in specific auditory perceptual areas. No significant differences were found on test of non-verbal intelligence or visual perception. Although scores were not significantly different on academic achievement tests, school records indicate that the CL loss group had received more special support services than the controls. This investigation suggests that early middle ear pathology may produce secondary effects that can persist well beyond the episodes of temporary conductive hearing loss.
