Abstract

The techniques used previously to calculate the three-fold thermal conductivity reduction due to phonon dispersion in GaAs/AlAs superlattices (SLs) are applied to HgTe/CdTe SLs. 2. Phonon Dispersion Effects and the Thermal Conductivity Reduction in GaAs/AlAs Superlattices

Abstract

The experimentally observed order-of-magnitude reduction in the thermal conductivity along the growth axis of (GaAs)_n/(AlAs)_n (or n x n) superlattices is investigated theoretically for (2x2), (3x3) and (6x6) structures using an accurate model of the lattice dynamics. The modification of the phonon dispersion relation due to the superlattice geometry leads to flattening of the phonon branches and hence to lower phonon velocities. This effect is shown to account for a factor-of-three reduction in the thermal conductivity with respect to bulk GaAs along the growth direction; the remainder is attributable to a reduction in the phonon lifetime. The dispersion-related reduction is relatively insensitive to temperature (100 < T < 300K) and n. The phonon lifetime reduction is largest for the (2x2) structures and consistent with greater interface scattering. The thermal conductivity reduction is shown to be appreciably more sensitive to GaAs/AlAs force constant differences than to those associated with molecular masses., Comment: 5 figures

3. Thermoelectric Properties of Anisotropic Systems

Abstract

The effective transport coefficients and figure of merit ZT for anisotropic systems are derived from a macroscopic formalism. The full tensorial structure of the transport coefficients and the effect of the sample boundaries are included. Induced transverse fields develop which can be larger than the applied fields and which reduce the effective transport coefficients. A microscopic model relevant for multi-valleyed materials is introduced which utilizes the effective-mass and relaxation-time approximations. The thermopower and Lorentz number are independent of the tensorial structure of the transport coefficients in this case and are therefore isotropic. ZT is also isotropic for vanishing lattice thermal conductivity \kappa_\ell. For non-vanishing but sufficiently isotropic \kappa_\ell, ZT is maximal along the direction of highest electrical conductivity \sigma. Numerical calculations suggest that maximal ZT generally occurs along the principal direction with the largest \sigma/\kappa_\ell. An explicit bound on ZT is derived. Several results for specific systems are obtained: (1) Bulk n-type Bi_2Te_3 exhibits easily observable induced transverse fields and anisotropic ZTs. (2) Increased anisotropy in HgTe/ Hg_{1-x}Cd_xTe superlattices (SLs) is associated with larger induced fields. (3) The valley degeneracy is split and the bulk masses modified in isolated Bi_2Te_3 quantum wells, resulting in optimal ZTs for wells grown along the trigonal direction. 4. Coherent Exciton Lasing in ZnSe/ZnCdSe Quantum Wells?

Abstract

A new mechanism for exciton lasing in ZnSe/ZnCdSe quantum wells is proposed. Lasing, occurring below the lowest exciton line, may be associated with a BCS-like condensed (coherent) exciton state. This state is most stable at low temperatures for densities in the transition region separating the exciton Bose gas and the coherent exciton state. Calculations show the gain region to lie below the exciton line and to be separated from the absorption regime by a transparency region of width, for example, about 80 meV for a 90 Angstrom ZnSe/Zn_(0.75)Cd_(0.25)Se quantum well. Abstract

Background:Circulating autoantibodies (AB) against brain-antigens, often deemed pathological, receive increasing attention. We assessed predispositions and seroprevalence/characteristics of 49 AB in >7000 individuals.Methods:Exploratory cross-sectional cohort study, investigating deeply phenotyped neuropsychiatric patients and healthy individuals of GRAS Data Collection for presence/characteristics of 49 brain-directed serum-AB. Predispositions were evaluated through GWAS of NMDAR1-AB carriers, analyses of immune check-point genotypes, APOE4 status, neurotrauma. Chi-square, Fisher’s exact tests and logistic regression analyses were used.Results:Study of N=7025 subjects (55.8% male; 41±16 years) revealed N=1133 (16.13%) carriers of any AB against 49 defined brain-antigens. Overall, age dependence of seroprevalence (OR=1.018/year; 95% CI [1.015-1.022]) emerged, but no disease association, neither general nor with neuropsychiatric subgroups. Males had higher AB seroprevalence (OR=1.303; 95% CI [1.144-1.486]). Immunoglobulin class (N for IgM:462; IgA:487; IgG:477) and titers were similar. Abundant were NMDAR1-AB (7.7%). Low seroprevalence (1.25%-0.02%) was seen for most AB (e.g. amphiphysin, KCNA2, ARHGAP26, GFAP, CASPR2, MOG, Homer-3, KCNA1, GLRA1b, GAD65). Non-detectable were others. GWAS of NMDAR1-AB carriers revealed three genome-wide significant SNPs, two intergenic, one in TENM3, previously autoimmune disease-associated. Targeted analysis of immune check-point genotypes (CTLA4, PD1, PD-L1) uncovered effects on humoral anti-brain autoimmunity (OR=1.55; 95% CI [1.058-2.271]) and disease likelihood (OR=1.43; 95% CI [1.032-1.985]). APOE4 carriers (∼19%) had lower seropositivity (OR=0.766; 95% CI [0.625-0.933]). Neurotrauma predisposed to NMDAR1-AB seroprevalence (IgM: OR=1.599; 95% CI [1.022-2.468]).Conclusions:Humoral autoimmunity against brain-antigens, frequent across health and disease, is predicted by age, gender, genetic predisposition, and brain injury. Seroprevalence, immunoglobulin class, or titers do not predict disease.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Sex differences in incidence and/or presentation of schizophrenia (SCZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BIP) are pervasive. Previous evidence for shared genetic risk and sex differences in brain abnormalities across disorders suggest possible shared sex-dependent genetic risk. METHODS: We conducted the largest to date genome-wide genotype-by-sex (G×S) interaction of risk for these disorders using 85,735 cases (33,403 SCZ, 19,924 BIP, and 32,408 MDD) and 109,946 controls from the PGC (Psychiatric Genomics Consortium) and iPSYCH. RESULTS: Across disorders, genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphism-by-sex interaction was detected for a locus encompassing NKAIN2 (rs117780815, p = 3.2 × 10(-8)), which interacts with sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase (adenosine triphosphatase) enzymes, implicating neuronal excitability. Three additional loci showed evidence (p < 1 × 10(-6)) for cross-disorder G×S interaction (rs7302529, p = 1.6 × 10(-7); rs73033497, p = 8.8 × 10(-7); rs7914279, p = 6.4 × 10(-7)), implicating various functions. Gene-based analyses identified G×S interaction across disorders (p = 8.97 × 10(-7)) with transcriptional inhibitor SLTM. Most significant in SCZ was a MOCOS gene locus (rs11665282, p = 1.5 × 10(-7)), implicating vascular endothelial cells. Secondary analysis of the PGC-SCZ dataset detected an interaction (rs13265509, p = 1.1 × 10(-7)) in a locus containing IDO2, a kynurenine pathway enzyme with immunoregulatory functions implicated in SCZ, BIP, and MDD. Pathway enrichment analysis detected significant G×S interaction of genes regulating vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signaling in MDD (false discovery rate-corrected p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: In the largest genome-wide G×S analysis of mood and psychotic disorders to date, there was substantial genetic overlap between the sexes. Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2021. Published by Oxford University Press. Human polyomaviruses are widespread in humans and can cause severe disease in immunocompromised individuals. To identify human genetic determinants of the humoral immune response against polyomaviruses, we performed genome-wide association studies and meta-analyses of qualitative and quantitative immunoglobulin G responses against BK polyomavirus (BKPyV), JC polyomavirus (JCPyV), Merkel cellpolyomavirus (MCPyV), WU polyomavirus (WUPyV), and human polyomavirus 6 (HPyV6) in 15,660 individuals of European ancestry from three independent studies. We observed significant associations for all tested viruses: JCPyV, HPyV6, and MCPyV associated with human leukocyte antigen class II variation, BKPyV and JCPyV with variants in FUT2, responsible for secretor status, MCPyV with variants in STING1, involved in interferon induction, and WUPyV with a functional variant in MUC1, previously associated with risk for gastric cancer. These results provide insights into the genetic control of a family of very prevalent human viruses, highlighting genes and pathways that play a modulating role in human humoral immunity.

Abstract

The induced electric fields, the effective transport coefficients and the ZT of bulk Bi2Te3 and Hg(sub 1-x)CdxTe superlattices have been measured. Theoretically, the induced electric field in n-type Bi2Te3 is greater by as much as 76% of the external field and can lower the measured electrical conductivity by up to 60%. On the other hand, the anisotropy of Hg(sub 1-x)CdxTe superlattices can be increased by altering the composition and width of the barrier.

Abstract

Research was conducted to compute the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of Hg(sub 1-x)Cd(sub x)Te superlattices having currents along the growth axis using a realistic superlattice band structure and the multisubband Boltzmann equation. A heavy C1 and higher-lying light C2 subband combine to form a nonoptimal carrier-energy filter for a narrow well and wide barrier. For a narrow well and narrow-barrier system, ZT is 20% larger than that in the wide-barrier structure.

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are highly effective at identifying common risk variants for schizophrenia. Rare risk variants are also important contributors to schizophrenia etiology but, with the exception of large copy number variants, are difficult to detect with GWAS. Exome and genome sequencing, which have accelerated the study of rare variants, are expensive so alternative methods are needed to aid detection of rare variants. Here we re-analyze an Irish schizophrenia GWAS dataset (n = 3,473) by performing identity-by-descent (IBD) mapping followed by exome sequencing of individuals identified as sharing risk haplotypes to search for rare risk variants in coding regions. We identified 45 rare haplotypes (>1 cM) that were significantly more common in cases than controls. By exome sequencing 105 haplotype carriers, we investigated these haplotypes for functional coding variants that could be tested for association in independent GWAS samples. We identified one rare missense variant in PCNT but did not find statistical support for an association with schizophrenia in a replication analysis. However, IBD mapping can prioritize both individual samples and genomic regions for follow-up analysis but genome rather than exome sequencing may be more effective at detecting risk variants on rare haplotypes.
