Eimeriosis of farm animals is one of the most widespread parasitic diseases in the world. In the conditions of the steppe zone of Ukraine Eimeria perforans is more common in rabbits and E. arloingi in sheep and goats. Study of factors which influence the development of these protists on the soil surface is one of the major challenges for veterinarians working for large livestock companies and fighting against eimeriosis. Environmental temperature is able to change the speed of sporulation of oocysts Eimeria. Five values of temperature (15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) were used in a laboratory experiment in vitro. At 15 °C, the process of sporulation of E. arloingi and E. perforans in 100% of cases ended on the eighth day. With increase in temperature to 35 °C, the duration of sporulation decreased to three days. When the temperature was 30 °C the completion of sporulation was observed in more than 50% of the oocysts of E. arloingi on the second day, and for E. perforans on the third day. High-speed sporulation at elevated temperatures under conditions of global warming can result in the increasing spread of eimeriosis among wild and domestic animals.

[EN] The dynamic change in faecal Eimeria oocyst excretion was evaluated in 10 naturally infected female rabbits, starting from their weaning at 33 d of age until about 1 mo after their second parturition. Faecal samples collected from examined animals were quali-quantitatively analysed to evaluate presence and number of Eimeria oocysts. In addition, isolated Eimeria oocysts were identified at the species level following sporulation. Animals were found to be infected by Eimeria perforans, Eimeria exigua and Eimeria magna and shed Eimeria oocysts after weaning and after parturition. In particular, at 33 d of age all female rabbits examined were negative, while the discharge of Eimeria oocysts started at 39th day of age and peaked between 46th and 53rd day of age. From 81-109 d of age until the first parturition and from 25 d of age of the litters born at the first parturition to the second parturition, all animals resulted negative. After parturition, Eimeria oocyst output occurred from 6th to 12th day after the first parturition and from 7th to 13th day after the second parturition, while a second period of oocyst excretion was observed from 18th to 24th day after both parturitions. These findings may indicate the existence of a relationship between the periparturient phase and Eimeria oocyst output and suggest an important role of the mothers in transmission of the infection to their litters., The authors thank the Italian Ministry of University (MIUR) for financing this study

Exogenous and endogenous stages of Eimeria perforans naturally infected rabbits in Saudi Arabia were described. The prevalence of infection was 75%. Oocysts were ovoid to elliptical and measured 16×10μm. The four dizoic sporocysts were ovoid and measured 7×5μm. Endogenous stages were restricted to the duodenum. Meronts, microgamonts, macrogamonts and young oocysts were recorded and described.

The anticoccidial efficacy of diclazuril was studied in rabbits artificially infected with Eimeria flavescens, Eimeria intestinalis, Eimeria magna and Eimeria perforans. Continuous administration at 1 and 2 ppm in pelleted feed proved to be highly efficacious in controlling oocyst output and faecal scores. The weight gain was comparable and the feed efficiency slightly improved compared with the non-infected, non-medicated controls, and clinical signs were fully prevented. Medication of rabbits at 0.5 ppm also provided a significant improvement in all parameters compared with the infected, non-medicated controls. In order to obtain 100% effectiveness in the control of intestinal coccidiosis in rabbits, continuous medication at 1 ppm is recommended.

The epidemiology of coccidiosis involving Eimeria perforans, E. media, E. stiedae, E. irresidua, E. magna and E. piriformis was studied for a period of 35 months in a free-living population of wild rabbits, confined to an experimental enclosure.Relations between the seasonal fluctuations of the above species, on the one hand, and severity of infection and age and social status of hosts, on the other hand, based on the oocyst counts from 2326 faecal samples collected at regular monthly intervals, are indicated.Mortality within the population was analysed, and coccidiosis was found not to be responsible for the general mortality pattern.Thanks are due to Mr M. l. Bei dem Coccid Eimeria perforans wurden die cytologischen Vorgange wahrend der Mikrogametenentwicklung elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht. 2. Die Mikrogamogonie last sich in zwei Phasen einteilen. In der ersten Phase finden im wesentlichen Kernteilungen statt; in der zweiten erfolgt dann die Differenzierung der Gameten. 3. Nach der letzten Mitose wandern die Kerne an die Peripherie der Mikrogamontenzelle, wo sich zahlreiche Mitochondrien befinden. In dieser Randzone werden dann Cytoplasmavorwolbungen sichtbar, denen sich je ein Kern zuordnet. In den Plasmaerhebungen sind die Basalkorper der Geiseln lokalisiert. Bald danach legt sich jedem Kern ein groses Mitochondrium dicht an. Die Kerne strecken sich daraufhin in die Lange und werden besonders an der dem Gametenrand zugeordneten Seite elektronendichter. Gleichzeitig erscheint an jedem Kern ein Auswuchs, in den allmahlich das gesamte Kernmaterial hineingezogen wird. Auf diese Weise formen sich die Kerne zu schmalen, walzenformigen Gebilden um. Das Mitochondrium streckt sich dabei ebenfalls in die Lange und erfahrt bei diesem Prozes eine Anderung seiner Innenstruktur. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt sind auch schon die Fibrillen der in den Cytoplasmavorwolbungen entspringenden Geiseln wahrzunehmen. Spaterhin trennt sich der junge Mikrogamet als kugeliges bis ovoides Gebilde vom Cytoplasma seiner Mutterzelle. In seinem kontrastarmen Innenraum erkennt man sodann eine Vakuole, die rasch an Volumen zunimmt und sich schlieslich mit dem umgebenden Flussigkeitsraum der Wirtszelle vereinigt, wobei sich der kreisformig gebogene Kern streckt und dem Mikrogameten seine definitive Gestalt gibt. 4. Der reife Mikrogamet ist ein schmales, etwa 6 μ langes Gebilde, das hauptsachlich aus Kernsubstanz besteht. Am Vorderende besitzt er eine Spitze, das Perforatorium, in dem die drei Basalkorper liegen. Sie sind der Ausgangspunkt von drei Geiseln, namlich von zwei langen, freien Geiseln und einer kurzeren Schleppgeisel, die mit der Oberflache des Gameten verbunden ist und erst kurz vor dem Hinterende frei wird. Der Nachweis von drei Geiseln ist neu und unerwartet, weil seit uber 60 Jahren angenommen wird, die Mikrogameten der Eimeria-Arten besasen nur zwei Geiseln. 5. Der Kern ist lang und schmal und erstreckt sich von der Spitze bis zum Hinterende der Gametenzelle. Vorn ist er fein ausgezogen und last eine strukturelle Verbindung mit einem Basalkorper erkennen. Im vorderen Kernabschnitt befindet sich eine Langsrinne zur Aufnahme des langgestreckten Mitochondriums. Eine solche Lagebeziehung zwischen einem Kern und einem Mitochondrium ist bisher noch bei keiner anderen Zelle gefunden worden. 6. Der Mikrogamet besitzt nur ein einziges Mitochondrium, das eine ausgesprochene Langsorientierung aufweist. Das schmale, langgestreckte Gebilde wird etwa 2,5 μ lang und last in seinem Innern eine regelmasige Anordnung zweier paralleler Reihen von kurzen, sackartigen Ausstulpungen erkennen. Es leitet sich, wie aus der Mikrogametenentwicklung hervorgeht, von einem Mitochondrium mit tubularer Innenstruktur her. 7. Die drei Basalkorper der Geiseln zeigen gleiche Struktur. Sie sind nach vorn zu geoffnet und bestehen aus zwei ineinandergestulpten Zylindern.

Die vorliegende Arbeit handelt von der Entstehung der Cystenhulle bei der Oocyste von Eimeria perforans. Der befruchtungsreife Makrogamet besitzt noch eine einfache Zellmembran mit schlauchartigen Ausstulpungen, die aber nach der Befruchtung verschwinden. An der Peripherie des Parasiten werden sodann funf aufeinanderfolgende Membranen sichtbar. Im Cytoplasma des Makrogameten hegen innerhalb groser Vakuolen eigenartige Strukturen, die wir ihrer Funktion wegen Hullbildungskorper (H-Korper) genannt haben. Diese treten in zwei verschiedenen Formen auf. Die zuerst gebildeten H-Korper des 1. Typs liefern die Aus enschicht der spateren Hulle, diejenigen des 2. Typs die Innenschicht. Die definitive Oocystenhulle ist 0,3 μ dick. Aus er den H-Korpern, deren Entstehung und Schicksal wir an Hand elektronenmikroskopischer Aufnahmen weitgehend klaren konnten, beteiligen sich an der Hullbildung wahrscheinlich auch noch andere Strukturen, wie z. B. die „dunklen Korper“, deren Bedeutung aber noch nicht ganz geklart ist.

Die Wirkung eines Parasiten auf seine Wirtszelle und deren Reaktion auf den Befall beruhen sicher primar auf der wechselseitigen Produktion chemischer Reiz- und Abwehrstoffe, die dann jedoch sekundar vielfach zu mikroskopisch sichtbaren morphologischen Veranderungen fuhren, und zwar vor allem in der befallenen Zelle. Da hieruber bisher sehr wenig bekannt war, habe ich versucht, diese Vorgange an einem mir gut bekannten Objekt, dem Coccid Eimeria perforans, elektronenoptisch zu verfolgen, d.h. festzustellen, welche morphologischen Veranderungen sich nach dem Eindringen des Parasiten in der befallenen Darmepithelzelle abspielen. Die Untersuchungen beziehen sich nicht auf die Schizogonie, die in einer spateren Arbeit besprochen werden soll, sondern auf die Infektion durch junge Makrogametocyten.

The surface of the gametocytes and gametes of Eimeria perforans reveals tube-like extrusions which have not been discovered so far in coccidia. These slender tubes are 650 A in width and at least 1,3μ in length. Probably they represent resorbing organelles. The tubes occur only at the surface of older female gametocytes and gametes and have not been observed in merozoites, schizonts, microgametocytes and male gametes. In transversal sections the tubes look like vesicles and are bordered by a membrane the layers of which are not sharply defined. The interior of the tubes seems to be empty after electron microscope observations. In longitudinal sections the membrane of the tubes is striated. The repeating unit of the dark and light bands amounts to about 165 A. This appearance cannot be explained so far.

Die Makrogamonten, Mikrogamonten und Oocysten von Eimeria perforans liegen im Innern ihrer Wirtszelle in einer Flussigkeitsvakuole. Die Oberflache der Gamonten ist nicht glatt, sondern enthalt unregelmasige Vorwolbungen. Im Kern der weiblichen Gamonten liegt ein groser Binnenkorper. Da sich ahnliche Strukturen oft auch im Cytoplasma finden, kann man annehmen, das Teile des Binnenkorpers ins Cytoplasma wandern. Die Grundstruktur des Cytoplasmas besteht aus einem unterschiedlich dichten System von punktformigen Grana, die an einigen Stellen, besonders am Zellrand, auch fadenformig sein konnen. Die Parasitenzelle besitzt ein ausgedehntes endoplasmatisches Reticulum, dessen Kanale und Blaschen besonders in der Nahe des Kernes konzentriert sind. Mitochondrien waren bei Eimerien bisher noch nicht gefunden worden. Die hier neu beschriebenen, vielfach hantelformigen Mitochondrien gehoren dem Tubulus-Typus an. Ihr Vorhandensein deutet darauf hin, das der Parasit nicht rein anoxybiontisch lebt. Das Cytoplasma der Oocysten enthalt neben zahlreichen Glykogeneinschlussen eigentumliche ovoide Membrankorper, die moglicherweise bei der Hullenbildung eine Rolle spielen.

Kasim A. A. and Al-Shawa Y. R. 1987. Coccidia in rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) in Saudi Arabia. International Journal for Parasitology 17 : 941–944. Seven species of coccidia were identified and described for the first time in Saudi Arabia in 263 faecal samples of domestic rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ). A total of 73% of the specimens were positive, most of them contained 1000–10,000 oocysts per gram. Mixed infections with three Eimeria species were common. Eimeria perforans and E. media occurred most frequently, E. magna, E. coecicola and E. irresidua were less common and E. flavescens and E. intestinalis were relatively rare.

P. 301-313 Ante el número de especies de Eimeria parásitas del conejo, próximas a E. perforans, y dado que los quistes de esta especie son bastante pleomórficos, se realizó un estudio biométrico y estadístico de 1000 quistes por infección, en el tercero y cuarto pase, y de una estirpe de esta especie. La estirpe se obtuvo por infección a partir de un solo quiste. Se estudiaron los quistes eliminados en una primoinfección por dosis moderada y de la reinfección con masas. De los resultados del trabajo se concluye que E. lugdunumensis, E. nagpurensis y E. perforans, no pueden ser diferenciadas entre si, sobre la base de la morfología de sus quistes. La validez como especie de E. lugdunumensis y E. nagpurensis debe ser demostrada mediante estudios histológicos e inmunológicos

The fine structure of the macrogametes of coccidia was investigated, described and diagrammatically depicted. A comparative analysis was made of representative species belonging to various genera. The following species were investigated: Eucoccidium dinophili, Aggregata eberthi, Eimeria perforans, E. stiedae, E. falciformis, E. bovis, E. auburnensis, E. tenella, E. maxima, Toxoplasma gondii, and Klossia helicina. The macrogametes of most of these Eimeria species are relatively uniform in their fine structure, but E. falciformis shows some differences and the macrogametes of T. gondii are also different in some respects. In the macrogametes of E. dinophili, A. eberthi, and K. helicina are found a number of special structures not seen in the others.

Die bisher in ihren cytologischen Einzelheiten unbekannten Vorgange wahrend der multiplen Zellteilung der Telosporidien wurden bei den beiden Coccidien E. perforans und E. stiedae elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht.

Die Oocystenhulle von Eimeria perforans, E. stiedae, E. tenella und zahlreicher weiterer Eimeria-Arten besteht aus zwei Schichten, deren Material aus zwei verschiedenen Zelleinschlussen stammt. Sogenannte dunkle Korper bzw. PAS-positive Grana bilden die ausere Schicht. Die innere wird von „Hullbildungskorpern“, die den lichtoptisch nachweisbaren Proteingrana entsprechen, aufgebaut. Da nunmehr bekannt ist, das beide Granatypen am Aufbau der Oocystenhulle beteiligt sind, schlagen wir vor, die dunklen Korper, welche die ausere Schicht aufbauen, Hullbildungskorper I zu nennen und die bisher als „Hullbildungskorper“ bekannten Grana, die die innere Schicht bilden, als Hullbildungskorper II zu bezeichnen.

The fine structure of the microgamonts and microgametes of coccidia and related groups was investigated and is herein described and diagrammatically depicted. Particular attention is given to the developmental processes during the differentiation of the microgametes. The species included in the study are: Eimeria perforans, E. maxima, E. tenella, E. auburnensis, E. falciformis, and Toxoplasma gondii. A comparative analysis of the developmental processes as well as the fine structure of the microgametes of these species and those of other Sporozoa is presented.

Perard1 has shown that while the oocysts of the rabbit coccidia are extremely resistant to chemicals, they are, on the other hand, quite susceptible to heat. For example, Eimeria perforans was rendered incapable of sporulating if kept in an aqueous medium at a temperature of 40°C. for one day. Eighty per cent. of the oocysts were killed within 20 minutes in water at 55°C., within 10 seconds in water at 80°C., and within 5 seconds by boiling water.In our experiments with E. perforans and E. magna the temperatures were maintained by an electric thermo-regulator water bath which did not fluctuate much beyond 0.1°C. The oocysts were kept in a 2% aqueous solution of potassium dichromate aerated by a constant succession of bubbles of air which was humidified and equated to the temperature of the bath prior to coming into contact with the culture solution.At 25°C. about 50% of the oocysts of E. magna completed the sporulation process within 84 hours, while E. perforans required but 48 hours to attain the same pe...
