Direct-to-satellite (DtS) communication has gained importance recently to support globally connected Internet of things (IoT) networks. However, relatively long distances of densely deployed satellite networks around the Earth cause a high path loss. In addition, since high complexity operations such as beamforming, tracking and equalization have to be performed in IoT devices partially, both the hardware complexity and the need for high-capacity batteries of IoT devices increase. The reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have the potential to increase the energy-efficiency and to perform complex signal processing over the transmission environment instead of IoT devices. But, RISs need the information of the cascaded channel in order to change the phase of the incident signal. This study evaluates the pilot signal as a graph and incorporates this information into the graph attention networks (GATs) to track the phase relation through pilot signaling. The proposed GAT-based channel estimation method examines the performance of the DtS IoT networks for different RIS configurations to solve the challenging channel estimation problem. It is shown that the proposed GAT both demonstrates a higher performance with increased robustness under changing conditions and has lower computational complexity compared to conventional deep learning methods. Moreover, bit error rate performance is investigated for RIS designs with discrete and non-uniform phase shifts under channel estimation based on the proposed method. Next-generation communication technology will be made possible by cooperation between terrestrial networks with non-terrestrial networks (NTN) comprised of high-altitude platform stations and satellites. Further, as humanity embarks on the long road to establish new habitats on other planets, cooperation between NTN and deep-space networks (DSN) will be necessary. In this regard, we propose the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to improve coordination between these networks given that RIS perfectly match the size, weight, and power restrictions of operating in space. A comprehensive framework of RIS-assisted non-terrestrial and interplanetary communications is presented that pinpoints challenges, use cases, and open issues. In this paper, graph attention network (GAT) is firstly utilized for the channel estimation. In accordance with the 6G expectations, we consider a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) mounted reconfigurable intelligent surface-assisted two-way communications and obtain a low overhead and a high normalized mean square error performance. The performance of the proposed method is investigated on the two-way backhauling link over the RIS-integrated HAPS. The simulation results denote that the GAT estimator overperforms the least square in full-duplex channel estimation. Contrary to the previously introduced methods, GAT at one of the nodes can separately estimate the cascaded channel coefficients. Thus, there is no need to use time-division duplex mode during pilot signaling in full-duplex communication. Moreover, it is shown that the GAT estimator is robust to hardware imperfections and changes in small-scale fading characteristics even if the training data do not include all these variations., Comment: This paper has been accepted for the presentation in IEEE ICC'2021

The revolution in the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks will bring changes on their communication models and a shift from the classical bent-pipe architectures to more sophisticated networking platforms. Thanks to technological advancements in microelectronics and micro-systems, the terahertz (THz) band has emerged as a strong candidate for inter-satellite links (ISLs) due to its promise of high data rates. Yet, the propagation conditions of the THz band need to be properly modeled and controlled by utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to leverage their full potential. In this work, we first provide an assessment of the use of the THz band for ISLs, and quantify the impact of misalignment fading on error performance. Then, in order to compensate for the high path loss associated with high carrier frequencies, and to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we propose the use of RISs mounted on neighboring satellites to enable signal propagation. Based on a mathematical analysis of the problem, we present the error rate expressions for RIS-assisted ISLs with misalignment fading. User-centric and low latency communications can be enabled not only by small cells but also through ubiquitous connectivity. Recently, the vertical heterogeneous network (V-HetNet) architecture is proposed to backhaul/fronthaul a large number of small cells. Like an orchestra, the V-HetNet is a polyphony of different communication ensembles, including geostationary orbit (GEO), and low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites (e.g., CubeSats), and networked flying platforms (NFPs) along with terrestrial communication links. In this study, we propose the Terahertz (THz) communications to enable the elements of V-HetNets to function in harmony. As THz links offer a large bandwidth, leading to ultra-high data rates, it is suitable for backhauling and fronthauling small cells. Furthermore, THz communications can support numerous applications from inter-satellite links to in-vivo nanonetworks. However, to savor this harmony, we need accurate channel models. Spectrum sensing is one of the means of utilizing the scarce source of wireless spectrum efficiently. In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model employing spectral correlation function which is an effective characterization of cyclostationarity property, is proposed for wireless spectrum sensing and signal identification. The proposed method classifies wireless signals without a priori information and it is implemented in two different settings entitled CASE1 and CASE2. In CASE1, signals are jointly sensed and classified. In CASE2, sensing and classification are conducted in a sequential manner. In contrary to the classical spectrum sensing techniques, the proposed CNN method does not require a statistical decision process and does not need to know the distinct features of signals beforehand. Implementation of the method on the measured overthe-air real-world signals in cellular bands indicates important performance gains when compared to the signal classifying deep learning networks available in the literature and against classical sensing methods. Even though the implementation herein is over cellular signals, the proposed approach can be extended to the detection and classification of any signal that exhibits cyclostationary features. Finally, the measurement-based dataset which is utilized to validate the method is shared for the purposes of reproduction of the results and further research and development.

The applications of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increase rapidly in everyday life, thus detecting the UAVs and/or its pilot is a crucial task. Many UAVs adopt frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology to efficiently and securely communicate with their radio controllers (RC) where the signal follows a hopping pattern to prevent harmful interference. In order to realistically distinguish the frequency hopping (FH) RC signals, one should consider the real-world radio propagation environment since many UAVs communicate with RCs from a far distance in which signal faces both slow and fast fading phenomenons. Therefore, in this study different from the literature, we consider a system that works under real-conditions by capturing over-the-air signals at hilly terrain suburban environments in the presence of foliages. We adopt the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) approach to capture the hopping sequence of each signal. Furthermore, time guards associated with each hopping sequence are calculated using the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the STFT which results in differentiating the each UAV RC signal accurately. Powered by the advances in microelectronics technologies, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide a vast variety of services ranging from surveillance to delivery in both military and civilian domains. It is clear that a successful operation in those services relies heavily on wireless communication technologies. Even though wireless communication techniques could be considered to reach a certain level of maturity, wireless communication links including UAVs should be regarded in a different way due to the peculiar characteristics of UAVs such as agility in 3D spatial domain and versatility in modes of operation. Such mobility characteristics in a vast variety of environmental diversity render links including UAVs different from those in traditional, terrestrial mobility scenarios. Furthermore, UAVs are critical instruments for network operators in order to provide basic voice and short messaging services for narrow band communication in and around disaster areas. It is obvious that such widespread use of UAVs under different scenarios and environments requires a better understanding the behavior of the communication links that include UAVs. Therefore, in this study, details of a measurement campaign designed to collect data for large-scale propagation characterization of air-to-ground links operated by UAVs at 446MHz under narrowband assumption are given. With the recent developments on opening the terahertz (THz) spectrum for experimental purposes by the Federal Communications Commission, transceivers operating in the range of 0.1THz-10THz, which are known as THz bands, will enable ultra-high throughput wireless communications. However, actual implementation of the high-speed and high-reliability THz band communication systems should start with providing extensive knowledge in regards to the propagation channel characteristics. Considering the huge bandwidth and the rapid changes in the characteristics of THz wireless channels, ray tracing and one-shot statistical modeling are not adequate to define an accurate channel model. In this work, we propose Gamma mixture-based channel modeling for the THz band via the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. First, maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is applied to characterize the Gamma mixture model parameters, and then EM algorithm is used to compute MLEs of the unknown parameters of the measurement data. The accuracy of the proposed model is investigated by using the Weighted relative mean difference (WMRD) error metrics, Kullback-Leibler (KL)-divergence, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to show the difference between the proposed model and the actual probability density functions (PDFs) that are obtained via the designed test environment. According to WMRD error metrics, KL-divergence, and KS test results, PDFs generated by the mixture of Gamma distributions fit the actual histogram of the measurement data. It is shown that instead of taking pseudo-average characteristics of sub-bands in the wideband, using the mixture models allows for determining channel parameters more precisely., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) has been studied for more than a quarter of a century; however, it has been difficult to design a classifier that operates successfully under changing multipath fading conditions and other impairments. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based methods are adopted by AMC systems and major improvements are reported. In this paper, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier model is proposed to classify modulation classes in terms of their families, i.e., types. The proposed classifier is robust against realistic wireless channel impairments and in relation to that when the data sets that are utilized for testing and evaluating the proposed methods are considered, it is seen that RadioML2016.10a is the main dataset utilized for testing and evaluation of the proposed methods. However, the channel effects incorporated in this dataset and some others may lack the appropriate modeling of the real-world conditions since it only considers two distributions for channel models for a single tap configuration. Therefore, in this paper, a more comprehensive dataset, named as HisarMod2019.1, is also introduced, considering real-life applicability. HisarMod2019.1 includes 26 modulation classes passing through the channels with 5 different fading types and several numbers of taps for classification. It is shown that the proposed model performs better than the existing models in terms of both accuracy and training time under more realistic conditions. Even more, surpassed their performance when the RadioML2016.10a dataset is utilized.

Digital revolution and recent advances in telecommunications technology enable to design communication systems which operate within the regions close to the theoretical capacity limits. Ever-increasing demand for wireless communications and emerging numerous high-capacity services, data rates and applications mandate providers to employ more bandwidth-oriented solutions to meet the requirements. It is clear that such rates could only be achieved by employing more bandwidth with the state-of-the- art technology. Considering the fact that bands in the range of 275GHz-3000GHz, which are known as Terahertz (THz) bands, are not allocated yet for specific active services around the globe, there is an enormous potential to achieve the desired data rates. Although THz bands look promising to achieve data rates on the order of several tens of Gbps, realization of fully operational THz communications systems obliges to carry out a multi- disciplinary effort including statistical propagation and channel characterizations, adaptive transceiver designs, reconfigurable platforms, advanced signal processing algorithms and techniques along with upper layer protocols equipped with various security and privacy levels. Therefore, in this study, several important statistical parameters for line-of-sight (LOS) channels are measured. High resolution frequency domain measurements are carried out at single-sweep within a span of 60GHz. Impact of antenna misalignment under LOS conditions is also investigated. By validating exponential decay of the received power in both time and frequency domain, path loss exponent is examined for different frequencies along with the frequency-dependent path loss phenomenon. Furthermore, impact of humidity is also tested under LOS scenario. The homogeneous poisson point process (PPP) is widely used to model temporal, spatial or both topologies of base stations (BSs) and mobile terminals (MTs). However, negative spatial correlation in BSs, due to strategical deployments, and positive spatial correlations in MTs, due to homophilic relations, cannot be captured by homogeneous spatial PPP (SPPP). In this paper, we assume doubly stochastic poisson process, a generalization of homogeneous PPP, with intensity measure as another stochastic process. To this end, we assume Permanental Cox Process (PCP) to capture positive spatial correlation in MTs. We consider product density to derive closed-form approximation (CFA) of spatial summary statistics. We propose Euler Characteristic (EC) based novel approach to approximate intractable random intensity measure and subsequently derive nearest neighbor distribution function. We further propose the threshold and spatial extent of excursion set of chi-square random field as interference control parameters to select different cluster sizes for device-to-device (D2D) communication. The spatial extent of clusters is controlled by nearest neighbor distribution function which is incorporated into Laplace functional of SPPP to analyze the effect of D2D interfering clusters on average coverage probability of cellular user. The CFA and empirical results are in good agreement and its comparison with SPPP clearly shows spatial correlation between D2D nodes., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures
