Abstract

The study addresses the persistent issue of thiamphenicol (THI) accumulation in aquatic environments and its detrimental impact on biological systems. While activated carbon is commonly used for removing such organic micropollutants in advanced wastewater treatment, this research explores the innovative use of olive stones as a feedstock for activated carbon production. The novelty of this study lies in the optimization of the activated carbon preparation process using a fractional factorial design with five critical factors: concentration, heating rate, activation temperature, activation time, and impregnation ratio. By employing the methylene blue method to determine the specific surface area (SSA), the optimal conditions were identified: a phosphoric acid solid-liquid ratio of 1:2 (74.52%), a heating temperature of 550 °C at a rate of 10 °C/min, and an activation period of 120 minutes, resulting in an SSA of 53.07 m²/g. The subsequent THI adsorption tests in a fixed-bed column revealed that THI removal ef- ficiency was inversely proportional to flow rate and initial THI concentration, while positively correlated with bed height. This study fills a critical gap by demonstrating an effective, sustainable method for producing activated carbon from agricultural waste, optimizing the process parameters for maximum efficiency in micropollutant removal. Abstract

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of olive mill wastewater (OMW) as an organic fertilizer through co-composting with various agricultural by-products. OMW was mixed with agricultural by-products, including maize silage, sugar beet pulp, and sugarcane bagasse, in controlled proportions and conditions. The study was conducted at the National Institute of Agricultural Research in Rabat, Morocco. The composting process was monitored over time, focusing on the evolution of key physicochemical parameters and phenol content of each mixture. The results showed that the performance of the composts varied, with the mixture containing sugar beet pulp (SBPO) exhibiting the most promising results, followed by maize silage (MSO) and sugarcane bagasse (SBO). These results suggest that co-composting OMW with agricultural by-products can produce high-quality organic fertilizers, thus reducing the need for inorganic alternatives and providing a sustainable waste management solution in the olive oil industry. It highlights the potential for reducing phenols characteristic of OMW and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The application of the composts to crops was not tested, highlighting the need for further research in this regard. Future investigations should focus on evaluating the long-term effects of OMW-derived composts on soil health and crop productivity. This study explored a combination of materials that, to the authors’ knowledge, has not been previously documented in scientific literature. The results underscore the importance of sustainable waste management practices and their potential role in improving soil fertility and reducing the environmental impact associated with olive oil production. Abstract

Morocco’s economy has recently seen an unprecedented growth, which made the country emerge into the 5th strongest economy of the African continent. As other countries at the same stage of development, Morocco is also undergoing rapid urbanization, which results in increased anthropogenic air-pollution levels. The geographical location of the country makes it vulnerable to both short and longterm impacts of climate change. Despite the elevated risk and vulnerability, the current air pollution and climate change monitoring strategy of the country needs improvement. The present paper introduces a novel strategy to improve the air quality monitoring system in the capital combined with developing a project-based climate education curriculum, and promises to raise public awareness to the risks related to air pollution and climate change. The sustainability of the project is guaranteed by the low cost of instruments and the educational aspect which ensures that future experts are well-trained for the maintenance of the system that we propose to install.
