Abstract

The main interest of this study is to analyze the effect of Poisson's ratio (negative for auxetic materials) on the dynamic behavior of anti-trichiral structures: an experimental and numerical study is proposed. Using three-dimensional printing technology, anti-trichiral structures (cores and sandwiches) with different geometric parameters were produced with a bio-based composite material. The material used was polylactic acid (PLA) with flax fibers. The structure geometry (anti-trichiral) is the main factor that has an influence in determining its auxetic behavior. In this study, we show the effect of the elementary cell size of the anti-trichiral structure on the auxetic behavior and its impact on the static and dynamic properties of the materials. Initially, experimental tensile tests were used to establish the static characteristics of all specimens, including Poisson's ratio values. From these results concerning Poisson's ratios, experimental vibration tests were also carried out to determine their dynamic properties and this is to understand the field of application of these structures and to analyze their behavior in practical use. To validate experimental results, finite element studies were carried out. Abstract

This article aims to accomplish research's that has been achieved recently in the scientific community on the manufacturing monitoring and structural health monitoring (SHM) of composite materials using in-situ piezoelectric sensors. A series of specimens of flax/Elium composite laminates with and without integrated piezoelectric sensors were subject to static and fatigue tensile tests. The effects of introducing the sensor into the composite materials were studied. Moreover, the Acoustic Emission (AE) method was used during experimental tests to follow the gradual degradation and damage evolution in the bio-composites. The AE data were analyzed by the k-means unsupervised pattern recognition algorithm. Moreover, the characteristics of the acoustic signals detected from specimens with and without integrated sensors were compared. The experimental results show that the integration of piezoelectric sensors within the flax/Elium composite without degrading its mechanical properties is possible. In addition, the integrated sensor shows good results regarding class detection and separation. The in-situ health monitoring methods performed on bio-composites presents an excellent alternative to the conventional technique in which sensors are generally bonded to the material surface. Abstract

The purpose of the present experimental study is to describe the damage mechanisms occurring in epoxy matrix composites reinforced with hybrid carbon-flax fibres. The samples tested were consist of unidirectional carbon and flax fibre plies with different stacking sequences. Composite laminates were manufactured by hand lay-up process. The specimens were tested under uniaxial tensile loading. The tests carried out were monitored by the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The results obtained during the monotonic tensile tests were analyzed in order to identify the damage mechanisms evolutions. The recorded events were classified with the k-means algorithm which is a statistical multivariable analysis. In addition, it was an unsupervised classification according to temporal descriptors. The percentage of each damage mechanism to the global failure was evaluated by the hits number and the acoustic energy activity. The AE technique was correlated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations to identify the typical damage mechanisms.
