Abstract

Characteristics of the decay of alpha like nuclei produced in various reactions with alpha conjugate nuclei are discussed. We observe a significant number of events in which a large fraction of the system breaks up into alpha-conjugate nuclei. Lighter fragments in the various decay channels appear to originate from a neck-like region between 4 and 7 cm/ns whereas the heavier fragments appear to originate from velocities near the beam velocity. This behavior is consistent with a hierarchy effect that cannot be explained by statistical processes.

Abstract

By means of quantum-fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and local partial densities of bosonic and fermionic fragments produced in the decay of hot 40Ca and 28Si projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisionsat sub-Fermi energies have been obtained. The used method treats bosonic and fermionic fragments differently. The purpose of such treatment is to trace important quantum effects such as fermion quenching or Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in nuclei.

24. Balancing trust and accountability? The Assessment for Learning Programme in Norway

Abstract

With the increasing complexity of educational systems, countries face challenges in governing the implementation of educational reforms and programmes. The present country case study explores the development of implementation strategies used to enhance the programme “Assessment for Learning – 2010-2014” in Norwegian schools as a part of the OECD’s Governing Complex Education Systems (GCES). Norway’s educational governance is highly decentralised, with 428 municipalities and 19 counties appointed as “school owners.” The municipalities and counties vary greatly in size, number of schools and competence at the municipal level. The Ministry of Education and Research formulates national education policy including acts, regulations and curricula. Within this framework, the school owners (counties, municipalities and private providers) are responsible for implementing education activities, organising and operating school services, allocating resources, ensuring quality improvement and development of their schools. The case study is organized in four parts. Chapter 1 introduces the GCES framework and presents the background for the study while Chapter 2 describes the Norwegian school system within the context of cultural, historical, and socio-economic factors. Chapter 3 examines the Norwegian programme Vurdering for Læring (Assessment for Learning) that is the focus of this case study. Chapter 4 presents the main results including policy recommendations. Details about the methodology, participants and analytical tools used in the present study can be found in the Appendices.

Abstract

Retrospective review of findings during cystourethroscopic surveillance of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with indwelling urethral catheters (IUC) and suprapubic catheters (SPC) monitored between January 2003 and December 2008.To audit and compare findings between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients and between SPC and IUC population. To systematically review the literature including the recent National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines on cystoscopic surveillance.Theater management system and the electronic patient records used to retrieve demographics, injury details and operative findings.Of 925 cystoscopies performed in 507 patients, 449 were performed in 277 patients with IUC/SPC. Only 419 procedures (SPC 264; IUC 155) in 262 patients fit the inclusion criteria. Thirty procedures in fifteen non traumatic patients were excluded. Statistically there was no significant difference in incidence of findings between the symptomatic and asymptomatic group. Recurrent blockage of catheter was predominant in the SPC group and symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs) were the most common indications in the IUC group. In the asymptomatic group, there were 44 squamous metaplastic changes in 27 patients. Two of these patients had keratinizing variants. The duration of catheterization ranged from 20 months to 27 years and mean of 13.7 years. The average duration between two cystoscopies in the symptomatic group was 16 months compared with an average 21 months in the asymptomatic group.Cystourethroscopic surveillance in high-risk patients with IUC/SPC is essential to diagnose and manage at an early-stage complications associated with IUC/SPC, minimize symptomatology, mitigate aggravation of complications, maintain good health and probably good quality of life.

Abstract

Spinal injuries without neurological damage have little effects on respiratory function unless associated with injury to the chest wall. Early verticalisation or mobilisation of these patients is safe and likely to improve vital capacity. Spinal injury with cord damage has a profound effect on the mechanics of respiration and on respiratory function particularly in cervical cord injuries. Around 40% of spinal cord injuries occur in the cervical spine, a trend that is steadily increasing, with respiratory causes being responsible for death in over 20% of individuals. Loss of lung volumes and relative hypoxemia contribute to global hypoxaemia, exacerbating cord ischaemia in the acute period. Respiratory compromise results in the loss of muscle strength generation capacity and reduced lung volumes and in particular vital capacity, of up to 70%, ineffective cough and secretion clearance abilities; reductions in both lung and chest wall compliance and an additional oxygen cost of breathing due to changes in respiratory mechanics, with obstructive sleep apnoea evident in over 50% of acute tetraplegics. While some countries have specialist spinal centres to manage such catastrophic trauma with a demonstrable improvement in health outcomes attributed to their contribution, many individuals are initially admitted to local hospitals where healthcare professionals are less likely to fully appreciate the significant and continued vulnerabilities of such individuals. This article aims to provide a basic understanding of the causes and identification of the main principles of the respiratory management strategies required to maintain pulmonary health for cervical spinal cord injury patients during the initial and early post trauma phase. Abstract

Calorimetric and coalescence techniques have been employed to probe equilibration for hot nuclei produced in heavy ion collisions of 35 to 55 MeV/u projectiles with medium mass targets. Entrance channel mass asymmetries and energies were selected in order that very hot composite nuclei of similar mass and excitation would remain after early stage pre-equilibrium particle emission. Inter-comparison of the properties and de-excitation patterns for these different systems provides evidence for the production of hot nuclei with decay patterns relatively independent of the specific entrance channel., 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Intermediate mass fragment (Z > 2) emission in $^{124}$Sn, $^{124}$Xe+ $^{124}$Sn, $^{112}$Sn reactions at 28 MeV/nucleon were studied using neutron ion multidetector for reaction oriented dynamics, a 4$\pi$ charged particle detection system. A number of observables, such as isotopic yield distributions, energy spectra of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments, isotopic and isobaric yield ratios, and average neutron to proton ratios are investigated. These observables show significant dependence on the isospin N/Z of the reacting system. It is observed that the formation of neutron-rich clusters are correlated with the excess neutrons in the composite system and depends on the temperature of the emitting source. The origin of light particles and fragments was studied through observations of rapidity distribution as a function of collision violence. With increasing centrality, the heavier $^6$He isotope is found to be emitted closer to the midrapidity region than the lighter $^3$He isotope. The emission of heavy fragments from the midrapidity region becomes increasingly favorable for fragments with higher charge Z. The results suggest that the midrapidity region is not only neutron rich but also a rich source of heavy fragment (cluster) formation.
