Purpose – This paper comprehensively addresses the influence of chopped strand mat glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) patch configurations such as geometry, dimensions, position and the number of layers of patches, whether a single or double patch is used and how well debonding the area under the patch improves the strength of the cracked aluminum plates with different crack lengths. Design/methodology/approach – Single-edge cracked aluminum specimens of 150 mm in length and 50 mm in width were tested using the tensile test. The cracked aluminum specimens were then repaired using GFRP patches with various configurations. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM) was adopted to simulate the repaired cracked aluminum plates using composite patches to obtain the stress intensity factor (SIF). The numerical modeling and validation of ABAQUS software and the contour integral method for SIF calculations provide a valuable tool for further investigation and design optimization. Findings – The width of the GFRP patches affected the efficiency of the rehabilitated cracked aluminum plate. Increasing patch width WP from 5 mm to 15 mm increases the peak load by 9.7 and 17.5%, respectively, if compared with the specimen without the patch. The efficiency of the GFRP patch in reducing the SIF increased as the number of layers increased, i.e. the maximum load was enhanced by 5%. Originality/value – This study assessed repairing metallic structures using the chopped strand mat GFRP. Furthermore, it demonstrated the superiority of rectangular patches over semicircular ones, along with the benefit of using double patches for out-of-plane bending prevention and it emphasizes the detrimental effect of defects in the bonding area between the patch and the cracked component. This underlines the importance of proper surface preparation and bonding techniques for successful repair. Graphical abstract –

The importance of biomedical physical data is underscored by its crucial role in advancing our comprehension of human health, unraveling the mechanisms underlying diseases, and facilitating the development of innovative medical treatments and interventions. This data serves as a fundamental resource, empowering researchers, healthcare professionals, and scientists to make informed decisions, pioneer research, and ultimately enhance global healthcare quality and individual well-being. It forms a cornerstone in the ongoing pursuit of medical progress and improved healthcare outcomes. This article aims to tackle challenges in estimating unknown parameters and reliability measures related to the modified Weibull distribution when applied to censored progressive biomedical data from the initial failure occurrence. In this context, the article proposes both classical and Bayesian techniques to derive estimates for unknown parameters, survival, and failure rate functions. Bayesian estimates are computed considering both asymmetric and symmetric loss functions. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method is employed to obtain these Bayesian estimates and their corresponding highest posterior density credible intervals. Due to the inherent complexity of these estimators, which cannot be theoretically compared, a simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of various estimation procedures. Additionally, a range of optimization criteria is utilized to identify the most effective progressive control strategies. Lastly, the article presents a medical application to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators. Numerical findings indicate that Bayesian estimates outperform other estimation methods by achieving minimal root mean square errors and narrower interval lengths.

Statistics - Applications - Abstract
The paper discusses how to evaluate the reliability of units produced by different production lines. The procedure is based on selecting independent random samples of units produced by different production lines and then evaluating reliability functions for each group of units. The comparison between these reliability functions at a given time allows manufacturing experts to evaluate the effectiveness of production lines. A statistical methodology has been taken based on the assumption that the lifetime of units produced by each product line has a Weibull Gamma distribution. Then, real-world data is used to illustrate the study's contribution to reliability theory applications.

This investigation explores the effects of applying fuzzy time series (FTSs) based on neural network models for estimating a variety of spectral functions in integer time series models. The focus is particularly on the skew integer autoregressive of order one (NSINAR(1)) model. To support this estimation, a dataset consisting of NSINAR(1) realizations with a sample size of n = 1000 is created. These input values are then subjected to fuzzification via fuzzy logic. The prowess of artificial neural networks in pinpointing fuzzy relationships is harnessed to improve prediction accuracy by generating output values. The study meticulously analyzes the enhancement in smoothing of spectral function estimators for NSINAR(1) by utilizing both input and output values. The effectiveness of the output value estimates is evaluated by comparing them to input value estimates using a mean-squared error (MSE) analysis, which shows how much better the output value estimates perform.

Background: Several industrial products [such as paints, cosmetics, and petrol] contained metals like lead [Pb], which are harmful to people. The reproductive organs are the primary organs affected by heavy metal toxicity through the production of oxidative stress. Selenium and curcumin could help to counteract this toxicity.Aim of the work: We investigated the possible role of Selenium or curcumin in improving the testicular toxicity caused by the intake of Lead orally in albino rats.Materials and Methods: 40 adult male albino rats were selected and unsystematically separated into 4 groups [10 rats/each] included: Group 1: control group; Group 2: Pb-exposed group; Group 3: Pb plus Selenium and Group 4: Pb plus Curcumin. Blood samples were collected for examination of serum biochemical parameters, serum Testosterone, LH, FSH levels, Total Anti-oxidant Capacity [TAC], testicular tissue oxidative stress parameters and testicular histology were evaluated. Results: Oral administration of Pb to rats for 4 weeks disturbs the testicular structure and function with a significant increase in the oxidative stress enzymes, deposition of collagen fibers and anticaspase-3 in the testis. While, administration of either Selenium or Curcumin with Pb-exposure induced significant improvement of all the testicular changes. Conclusion: Chronic lead exposure causes deteriorating changes in the testicular structures and functions which could be improved by oral intake of either Selenium or Curcumin by their antioxidant, antifibrotic, and antiapoptotic properties.

abdominal surgery ,cost-effectiveness analysis ,global surgery ,high fraction of inspired oxygen ,low-and middle-income countries ,surgical site infection ,Anesthesiology ,RD78.3-87.3 - Abstract
Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

A cross-sectional, analytical study conducted over a period of 6 months from April to September 2021 after the approval of REC on 50 patients with confirmed positive of COVID-19 by SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid RT-PCR recruited from Isolation departments and intensive care units (ICUs), Beni-Suef University hospital. The goal of this study was to assess the serum level of (IL-18) as a biomarker of COVID-19 disease progression. All participants underwent complete blood count (CBC), C- reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, D-dimer and liver enzymes and measurement of serum IL- 18 level. All patients had been followed until hospital discharge or death. Forty-two patients (84%) recovered and discharged from the hospital while eight cases (16%) died due to different etiologies: 2 patients due to suppurative lung infection, another 2 because of multi organ failure, 2 patients owing to respiratory failure and alveolar damage, and the last 2 patients with cardiac comorbidity after ischemic heart disease and hypertension. There were a significant higher level of CRP, D-dimer, ferritin, and IL-18 among died as compared with recovered COVID-19 patients. Platelets count was significantly higher among recovered as compared with died COVID-19 patients. Correlation test showed a significant positive strong linear relationship between CRP level and IL-18, D-dimer level, and IL-18, and between ferritin level and IL-18. High values of IL-18 in patients’ serum helped to assess the poor prognosis which was statistically significant with 81.5% sensitivity and 57.5% specificity at a cutoff point level ≥ 230.75. Elevated serum levels of IL-18 were associated with fatal outcome in the COVID-19 infected patients and showed strong correlation with other inflammatory markers.

There is a wealth of data indicating human bone marrow contains skeletal stem cells (SSC) with the capacity for osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic differentiation. However, current methods to isolate SSCs are restricted by the lack of a defined marker, limiting understanding of SSC fate, immunophenotype, function and clinical application. The current study applied single-cell RNA-sequencing to profile human adult bone marrow populations from 11 donors and identified novel targets for SSC enrichment. Spherical nucleic acids were used to detect these mRNA targets in SSCs. This methodology was able to rapidly isolate potential SSCs found at a frequency of

Monitoring life-testing trials for a product or substance often demands significant time and effort. To expedite this process, sometimes units are subjected to more severe conditions in what is known as accelerated life tests. This paper is dedicated to addressing the challenge of estimating the power hazard distribution, both in terms of point and interval estimations, during constant- stress partially accelerated life tests using progressive first failure censored samples. Three techniques are employed for this purpose: maximum likelihood, two parametric bootstraps, and Bayesian methods. These techniques yield point estimates for unknown parameters and the acceleration factor. Additionally, we construct approximate confidence intervals and highest posterior density credible intervals for both the parameters and acceleration factor. The former relies on the asymptotic distribution of maximum likelihood estimators, while the latter employs the Markov chain Monte Carlo technique and focuses on the squared error loss function. To assess the effectiveness of these estimation methods and compare the performance of their respective confidence intervals, a simulation study is conducted. Finally, we validate these inference techniques using real-life engineering data.

The joint censoring technique becomes crucial when the study’s aim is to assess the comparative advantages of products concerning their service times. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in progressive censoring as a means to reduce both cost and experiment duration. This article delves into the realm of statistical inference for the three-parameter Burr-XII distribution using a joint progressive Type II censoring approach applied to two separate samples. We explore both maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods for estimating model parameters. Furthermore, we derive approximate confidence intervals based on the observed information matrix and employ four bootstrap methods to obtain confidence intervals. Bayesian estimators are presented for both symmetric and asymmetric loss functions. Since closed-form solutions for Bayesian estimators are unattainable, we resort to the Markov chain Monte Carlo method to compute these estimators and the corresponding credible intervals. To assess the performance of our estimators, we conduct extensive simulation experiments. Finally, to provide a practical illustration, we analyze a real dataset.

In this article, estimation of the parameters as well as some lifetime parameters such as reliability and hazard rate functions for the Dagum distribution based on record statistics is obtained. Both Bayesian and non-Bayesian inferential approaches of the distribution parameters and reliability characteristics are discussed. Moreover, approximate confidence intervals for the parameters based on the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimators are constructed. Besides, to construct the variances of the reliability and hazard rate functions the delta method is implemented. The Lindley's approximation and Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques are proposed to construct the Bayes estimates. To this end, the results of the Bayes estimates are obtained under both symmetric and asymmetric loss functions. Also, the corresponding highest posterior density credible intervals are constructed. A simulation study is utilized to assay and evaluate the performance of the proposed inferential approaches. Finally, a real data set of COVID-19 mortality rate is analyzed to illustrate the proposed methods of estimation.

Several models for time series with integer values have been published as a result of the substantial demand for the description of process stability having discrete marginal distributions. One of these models is the mixed count geometric integer autoregressive of order one (MCGINAR(1)), which is based on two thinning operators. This study examines how the estimates of the spectral density functions of the MCGINAR(1) model are affected by fuzzy time series Markov chain (FTSMC). Regarding this study’s context, the higher-order moments, central moments and spectral density functions of MCGINAR(1) are computed. The anticipated realizations of the generated realizations for this model are obtained based on FTSMC. In the case of generated and anticipated realizations, several lag windows are used to smooth the spectral density estimators. The generated realization estimates are compared with the anticipated realization estimates using the MSE to ascertain the FTSMC’s role in improving the estimation process.

With diversity of hosts range, most identified nematode species still lack the crucial connection between morphological and molecular make-up, which is important for precisely classifying the specimens. The present study provides the complete description of Rhabdias africanus in the new host record, Sclerophrys regularis. Fifty toad specimens were collected, and a high prevalence of R. africanus infection (74%) was observed. Morphology and ultrastructure were observed using light and scanning electron microscopes. Morphological characteristics, including peculiarities of the head, the shape and position of the lips, and the number of labial papillae, were described. The length of the body, the esophageal length, the distance from an anterior end to the nerve ring, and the tail length were reduced in the studied samples relative to previously described specimens. Furthermore, some variable matrices that have not previously been described, e.g., ovarian part widening, the nerve ring and its location, and eggs with different stages of larvae, were included in the present study. Genus and species identification was confirmed by comparing partial 12S (619 bp) and ITS (878 bp) gene sequences to those of Rhabdias species deposited in GenBank. The studied species showed a 99.34% resemblance to R. africanus from South Africa. We assume our findings will aid in the molecular identification of adult and larval stages of this genus in amphibians. We strongly recommend further studies on the environmental factors that promote Rhabdias infection and transmission.

The majority of approaches proposed in the past few decades to solve life test problems have differed markedly from those used for closely related, yet broader, issues. Due to the complexity of data that are generated each day in many practical domains, as a result of the development of scales for rating the success or failure of reliability, a new domain of reliability has been created. This domain is referred to as life classes, where specific probability distributions are presented. In this study, it is shown that the use of the quality-of-fit technique to solve problems involving life testing makes sense, and produces simpler processes that are roughly equivalent or superior to those used in traditional procedures. They may also behave better in limited samples. This work investigates a novel quality-of-fit test statistic; it is based on an exponential transform and is compared to the best renewal used Laplace test in increasing convex ordering (NBRULC). Evidence for approach normality is provided. The calculated variables include powers, Pitman asymptotic effectiveness, and critical points. Methods on how to handle censored data were also studied. Our experiments have real-world applications in the fields of medicine and engineering.

Due to the complexity of the data being generated day in and day out in many practical domains, as a result of the development of scales for rating the success or failure of reliability, a new domain of reliability called the classes of life and determinant probability distributions has been presented. This article introduces novel statistical probability models for the reliability class of life test under different reliability processes in the age range t∘. Several probabilistic properties and features were derived and rigorously screened to test the new reliability class. According to the U-statistic, a novel hypothesis test was created to evaluate the exponentiality property. The comparative efficiency of the test according to Pitman’s asymptotic efficiency was examined and compared with other reliability classes. To prove the superiority of the new reliability class, some probability models were utilized, including the Weibull, Makeham, gamma, and linear failure rate models. Moreover, critical point simulations of the null Monte Carlo distribution and some applications of the censored and uncensored data were implemented to validate the class test listed by the reliability analysis.

It is agreed by industry experts that manufacturing processes are evaluated using quantitative indicators of units produced from this process. For example, the Cpy process capability index is usually unknown and therefore estimated based on a sample drawn from the requested process. In this paper, Cpy process capability index estimates were generated using two iterative methods and a Bayesian method of estimation based on stepwise controlled type II data from the Pareto model. In iterative methods, besides the traditional probability-based estimation, there are other competitive methods, known as bootstrap, which are alternative methods to the common probability method, especially in small samples. In the Bayesian method, we have applied the Gibbs sampling procedure with the help of the significant sampling technique. Moreover, the approximate and highest confidence intervals for the posterior intensity of Cpy were also obtained. Massive simulation studies have been performed to evaluate the behavior of Cpy. Ultimately, application to real-life data is seen to demonstrate the proposed methodology and its applicability.

Over the past few decades, a new area of reliability known as classes of life distributions has developed as a result of the creation of metrics for evaluating the success or failure of reliability. This paper proposes a new reliability class-test statistic for life distributions. In some reliability processes, such as convolution, mixture, and homogeneous shock models, the closure characteristics of the proposed class-test statistic are investigated. To compare the proposed class-test against some competitive tests, the Weibull, linear failure rate (LFR), and Makeham distributions are evaluated. In addition, the relationship between sample size, level of confidence, and critical values is considered to assess the efficacy of the proposed class-test. Furthermore, a Monte Carlo null distribution critical points simulation and some applications of the censored and uncensored data are performed to demonstrate the validity of the proposed class-test in reliability analysis.
