Abstract Maize is the third most important grain crop worldwide after wheat and rice; it is a vital global crop, serving as a key source of food, animal feed, and industrial products, making it essential for food security and economic stability in many countries. Drought stress adversely affects water uptake and can stunt growth, reducing the overall productivity of maize. So, this study was carried out to investigate the cytogenetic effects of gamma radiation and drought stress on maize SC131 genotype, focusing on chromosomal aberrations in seedling root meristems induced by varying doses of gamma irradiation (50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 Gray) and drought stress imposed by 10% polyethylene glycol (PEG). The present study also aims to evaluate the impact of these treatments on growth parameters under a controlled pot experiment. Additionally, molecular polymorphism induced by both gamma irradiation and drought stress was analyzed using Real-Time quantitative PCR techniques for DREB2, ERF, and EF transcription factors. Also, under a field condition experiment, maize plants were subjected to the same gamma irradiation doses and drought stress by reducing the number of irrigations, with subsequent evaluations of yield attributes to assess the overall impact of treatments on plant performance. The study also investigates the sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) banding patterns of proteins in grains yielded under the influence of gamma radiation and drought treatments. Findings of the current investigation indicate that the low dose of gamma radiation (50 Gray) not only induces cytogenetic changes but also enhances drought tolerance and improves yield characteristics, suggesting that targeted gamma irradiation could serve as a viable strategy to bolster maize resilience in challenging environmental conditions. more...

Background and Aim: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that poses significant economic threats to livestock globally. This study aimed to confirm the presence of FMD virus (FMDV) in Egyptian cattle and identify the predominant serotypes contributing to outbreaks in Sharkia and Dakahlia provinces in 2022. Materials and Methods: A total of 65 cattle showing acute FMD symptoms were sampled. Desquamated epithelial tissues and oral secretions were analyzed using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction with universal and serotype-specific primers. Seven representative samples underwent sequencing for phylogenetic and genetic variability analysis. Results: All sampled animals tested positive for FMDV. Serotype A accounted for 72.3% of cases, while 27.7% were serotype O. Sequence analysis identified FMDV serotype A (African topotype, genotype IV) and serotype O (East Africa-3 topotype) as the outbreak-causing strains. The identified strains exhibited significant genetic divergence from the vaccine strains used in Egypt, with notable amino acid substitutions in the VP1 protein’s G-H loop. These mutations raise concerns about the efficacy of existing vaccines against current field strains. Conclusion: The study highlights the ongoing threat of FMD in Egypt, particularly among smallholder cattle farmers. The genetic divergence between circulating FMDV and vaccine strains underscores the need to continuously monitor and update vaccine formulations to enhance disease control efforts. Abstract Background and aims The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presents a significant health risk, affecting both healthy individuals and those with underlying health conditions, including liver diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on liver function in both hepatic and non-hepatic patients across varying degrees of disease severity, as confirmed by PCR testing. Methods In this prospective study, we included patients with confirmed COVID-19, both with and without liver conditions, who were admitted to the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute (NHTMRI) and Embaba Fever Hospital between November 2020 and July 2021. Results The study cohort consisted of 255 confirmed COVID-19 patients (mean age 52.16 years, 48.6% male, 24.3% with liver conditions). Among those with liver disease, 6.4% had mild symptoms, while 4.8%, 56.4%, and 33.8% experienced moderate, severe, and critical symptoms, respectively. Clinical characteristics were insignificantly different between hepatic and non-hepatic patients across the various COVID-19 severity grades, with the exception of the loss of taste and smell in severe cases and hepatic encephalopathy and oxygen saturation in critical cases. Laboratory findings similarly showed no significant differences, except that hepatic patients exhibited a notable decrease in platelet count and a significant increase in AST and bilirubin levels compared to non-hepatic patients. In critical COVID-19 cases, non-hepatic patients had significantly higher serum ferritin levels, while hepatic patients demonstrated increased serum bilirubin levels. Mortality was considerably higher in hepatic patients than in non-hepatic patients, particularly among those with severe and critical COVID-19. The study suggests that liver disease is associated with the progression to severe COVID-19, which includes a higher risk of mortality. Conclusion COVID-19 is linked to liver function impairment, with hepatic patients experiencing higher mortality rates compared to non-hepatic patients. Summary COVID-19, a novel coronavirus, presents a serious health threat to both healthy individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions. In this study, we evaluated its impact on individuals with liver disease compared to those without. The study aims to explore the affiliation strategies and semiotic resources employed in digital feminist activism by Assault Police ( AP ) within Egypt’s #MeToo movement to construct the identity of sexual-violence victims/survivors (SVVSs). Using Martin and White’s appraisal and Zappavigna’s communing affiliation frameworks, the study investigates how affective positioning is discursively constructed, multimodally materialized and ambiently performed in digital discourses to combat sexual-violence. A qualitative analysis of 104 digital narratives on sexual-violence, encompassing cases of rape, sexual-assault and gender-based violence, reveals how AP fosters a sense of shared values and emotional and moral stances within digital feminist spaces. The results demonstrate how AP constructs the social semiotic identity of Egyptian SVVSs through the utilization of affective-discursive strategies that combine evaluative language, visual cues, digital elements and cultural references as affective instruments to (re)shape and negotiate value- and-feeling-centered affiliations. AP employs a range of evaluative couplings to position SVVS as a credible, subject worthy of empathy and support/justice. This affective stance challenges the gendered semiotic identities and inequalities that pervade the Egyptian context. Additionally, AP facilitates the formation of affiliative bonds of belonging or exclusion around SVVSs through the use of emotional appeals, moral evaluations, affective repetitions, coherent designs, colour schemes, community-centered hashtags and cultural symbols. This study contributes to the field of non-Western digital discourse analysis by offering a model of affect and affiliation from a multimodal perspective that focuses on the distinctive dynamics of Egypt’s feminist landscape and advocates for the inclusion of Arab women’s voices in the global discourse on sexual violence. more...

Abstract A successful attempt to produce a multi-function glass shield for attenuating neutrons and gamma rays by reinforcing a silicate glass network with boron and bismuth has been accomplished. A composition of 20SiO2-80Na2O (BSiBi0) was proposed to be used as a host glass network and prepared using the melt/annealing techniques. The low concentration of SiO2 in BSiBi0 was not sufficient to form a stable glass network. Then, the proposed BSiBi0 was modified with 10, 20, 30, and 40 mol% of each of B2O3 and Bi2O3 (BSiBi1, BSiBi2, BSiBi3, and BSiBi4) simultaneously. The structural effects of adding B3+ and Bi3+ were studied through X-ray diffraction, density, and FTIR, which all showed enhancement of glass forming ability, a former role of Bi3+ ions, and crowded the glass network by BO4 units. The derived structural parameters $$-$$ - molar volume, mean silicon – silicon separation, mean boron – boron separation, oxygen packing density, packing density, and number of bridging/non-bridging oxygen $$-$$ - were extensively discussed to explore the impact of B3+ and Bi3+ on the formed network. The richness of the proposed host glass network by B3+ and Bi3+ enhanced its thermal stability. The obtained elastic properties by ultrasonic measurements reflect the increase of the glass rigidity with increasing concentrations of B3+ and Bi3+ ions. The obtained glasses have high visible light transparency and almost complete UV absorption. The measured shielding parameters against two types of neutron energies (total slow and slow) and a wide range of gamma rays’ energies showed a significant improvement in the shielding efficiency of the considered glasses. The total slow neutrons, slow neutrons, and gamma rays’ attenuation abilities were improved by 22.9, 135.5, and 73.8 $$-$$ - 199.5%. High thermal stability, elasticity, visible light transparency, and neutrons and gamma rays’ attenuation performance features give the produced glasses, especially BSiBi4 glass, preference as shielding materials in nuclear fields. more...

Abstract This study aimed to examine whether or not aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced hepatotoxicity might be mitigated using magnetic water (MW) in rats. This study involved 28 adult male rats randomly assigned into the following 4 groups (7 rats/group): normal control (Cnt), MW, AlCl3, and Al Cl3 + MW. The Cnt group orally received normal saline, the MW group drank MW ad libitum for 2 months, and the AlCl3 and AlCl3 + MW groups were orally administered AlCl3 (40 mg/kg b.w.) alone or in combination with MW for 2 months, respectively. MW reduced AlCl3 toxicity as proved at functional, molecular, and structural levels. Functionally, MW reduced serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT), while increased total proteins, and albumin. MW also restored redox balance in the liver (lower MDA levels, higher activities of CAT and SOD enzymes, and upregulated expression of NrF2, HO-1, and GST genes. Molecularly, MW downregulated hepatic expression of the epigenetic (HDAC3), inflammatory (IL1β, TNFα, NFκβ), and endoplasmic reticulum stress (XBP1, BIP, CHOP) genes. Structurally, MW enhanced liver histology. With these results, we could conclude that MW has the potential to ameliorate the hepatotoxic effects of AlCl3 through targeting oxidative stress, inflammation, epigenesis, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. more...

Sesamol (SEL) is 3,4-methylenedioxyphenol isolated from sesame seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the antiemetic activity of SEL, supported by in vivo and in silico studies. Further, molecular docking was carried out to understand the molecular interaction between selected ligands and different receptors liable for mediating emesis. SEL (25 and 50 mg/kg) showed dose-dependent elevation in latency (133.20 ± 2.19 and 293.00 ± 5.27 s) and diminishment in the retching number (16.40 ± 1.15 and 9.40 ± 1.04 times), compared to control. Additionally, SEL can antagonize the activity of ondansetron (OND; 5 mg/kg) and domperidone (DOM; 7 mg/kg), resulting in a decrease in latency (256.00 ± 9.59 and 253.00 ± 2.79 s) and enhancing the number of retches (11.80 ± 0.82 and 12.60 ± 1.04) in combination rather than OND and DOM alone. An in-silico study showed SEL has moderate binding activity (−5.9 and − 5.7 kcal/mol) for serotonin (5HT3) and dopaminergic (D2) receptors, respectively, via hydrogen and hydrophobic bonds with specific amino acid residues. more...

The goal of this study is to use our suggested generalized Legendre wavelet method to solve delay and equations of neutral differential form with pro-portionate delays of different orders. Delay differential equations have some application in the mathematical and physical modelling of real-world prob-lems such as human body control and multibody control systems, electric circuits, dynamical behavior of a system in fluid mechanics, chemical en-gineering, infectious diseases, bacteriophage infection’s spread, population dynamics, epidemiology, physiology, immunology, and neural networks. The use of orthonormal polynomials is the key advantage of this method because it reduces computational cost and runtime. Some examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested strategy. The method’s accuracy is reported in terms of absolute errors. The numerical findings are compared to other numerical approaches in the literature, particularly the regular Legendre wavelets method, and show that the current method is quite effective in order to solve such sorts of differential equations. more...

Introduction: A model to predict the risk of surgical complications following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) could be a useful tool to guide clinical decision-making. The aim of this study was to develop a simple and widely applicable stratification tool to be used for patient counseling, surgical planning, evaluation of outcomes, and academic reporting. Methods: Data of patients who underwent PCNL were retrieved from the database of the collaborating centers including demographics of patients, characteristics of their stones and urinary tracts, and perioperative data. The primary outcome was the development of postoperative complications. Data were randomly split into a training dataset (85%) and a validation dataset (15%). A univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis of the training dataset was performed to identify independent predictors of postoperative complications. Model variables were used to construct a nomogram that was internally validated on the testing dataset by measuring calibration, discrimination, and plotting the decision curve. Results: Six hundred thirty one patients (245 Males) with a median (IQR) age of 49 (37-56) years were included. Post-operative complications occurred in 147 (23.3%) patients. Significant predictors of complications included preoperative urine culture (p < 0.001), largest stone diameter (p = 0.02), and intraoperative blood loss (p = 0.002). A nomogram was developed from the predictors and applied to the validation dataset showing an area under the curve (95%CI) of 66.4% (52.2;80.6). Conclusions: This new scoring system emphasized patient characteristics and operative details rather than stone characters to predict the morbidity of PCNL. Furthermore, it should facilitate risk adjustment, enabling physicians to better define the nephrolithiasis disease continuum and identify patients who should be referred to tertiary care centers. more...

Targeting neutrophil function has gained attention as a propitious therapeutic strategy for diverse inflammatory diseases. Accordingly, a series of enone-based derivatives were developed to inhibit neutrophil-mediated inflammation, showing promise for treating inflammatory diseases. These compounds fall into two clusters with distinct effects: one inhibits neutrophilic superoxide (SO) anion production and elastase release triggered by N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLF), with compound 6a being most effective (IC50 values of 1.23 and 1.37 μM, respectively), affecting c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Akt phosphorylation. The second cluster suppresses formation of SO anion without affecting elastase levels, surpassed by compound 26a (IC50 of 1.56 μM), which attenuates various mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) with minimal Akt impact. Notably, none of the tested compounds showed cytotoxicity in human neutrophils, underscoring their potential as therapeutic agents against inflammatory diseases. more...

Substantial research is currently conducted focusing on the development of promising antiviral drugs employing in silico screening and drug repurposing strategies against SARS-CoV-2. The current study aims at identifying lead molecules targeting SARS-CoV-2 by the application of in silico and molecular dynamics (MD) approaches from phytoconstituents present in Homalomena aromatica. The main protease (Mpro) enzyme of SARS-CoV-2 is taken as the target protein to perform the docking analysis of 71 molecules reported from H. aromatica by the application of different modules of Discovery Studio 2018. Five molecules were taken as prospective leads namely dihydrocuminaldehyde, p-cymen-8-ol, cuminaldehyde, p-cymene, and cuminol. In the absence of known inhibitors, a comparative study was performed with the compounds reported in the literature and potent terpenoid–metal complexes were taken into account based on known efficacy as anti-viral molecules. After performing the docking studies with Mpro enzyme of SARS-CoV-2, it was observed that the –CDocker Energy of cuminaldehyde thiosemicarbazone was 29.152, indicating a significant affinity toward Mpro. The same was also supported by the MD study. Taken together, our results provided in silico evidence that secondary metabolites derived from H. aromatica could be employed as potent antiviral agents targeting SARS-CoV-2. Our findings warrant further validation of their in vitro and in vivo efficacies prior to their development into bona fide therapeutic agents. more...

Background: Postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) after cardiosurgical interventions are well described through objective psychometric tests. However, a patient’s subjective perception is essential to clinical assessment and quality of life. This study systematically evaluated patient-reported POCD between subjects undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and heart valve replacement. Methods: This study was a multicentre, prospective questionnaire survey conducted at the cardiac surgery departments at the Kerckhoff Clinic in Bad Nauheim and the University Hospital in Giessen, Germany. We included patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aortic valve replacement (AVR), mitral valve replacement or reconstruction (MVR), and combined surgery (CABG + valve replacement [VR]) with extracorporeal circulation. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) for Self-assessment (CFQ-S), and the external assessment (CFQ-foreign [F]) were completed preoperatively, as well as at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Results: A total of 491 patients were available for analyses (CABG = 182, AVR = 134, MVR = 93, CABG + VR = 82). POCD and postoperative depression increase (PODI) were observed for each surgical procedure. (At the 3-month follow-up: CFQ-S [CABG = 7.1%, AVR = 3.7%, MVR = 9.7%, CABG + VR = 9.8%]; CFQ-F [CABG = 9.9%, AVR = 9.7%, MVR = 9.7%, CABG + VR = 15.9%]; PODI [CABG = 7.7%, AVR = 9.7%, MVR = 6.5%, CABG + VR = 8.5%]. At the 12-month follow-up: CFQ-S [CABG = 6.6%, AVR = 7.5%, MVR = 15.1%, CABG + VR = 7.3%]; CFQ-F [CABG = 7.1%, AVR = 14.9%, MVR = 10.8%, CABG + VR = 9.8%]; PODI [CABG = 10.4%, AVR = 11.2%, MVR = 6.5%, CABG + VR = 4.9%]). No significant between-group effects were observed for the CFQ-S, CFQ-F, or the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Conclusions: For clinicians, paying attention to patients' self-reported experiences of reduced cognitive function and symptoms of depression following cardiac surgery is important. Such reporting is an indication that interventions such as cognitive training or psychotherapy should be considered. Résumé: Contexte: Le déclin cognitif postopératoire (DCPO) à la suite d’interventions de chirurgie cardiaque est bien décrit par des évaluations psychométriques objectives. Cependant, la perception subjective du patient est essentielle à l’évaluation clinique et à la qualité de vie. Cette étude visait à évaluer de façon systématique le DCPO déclaré par le patient chez des sujets ayant subi un pontage aortocoronarien ou une chirurgie valvulaire. Méthodologie: Cette étude prospective multicentrique par questionnaire a été menée aux services de chirurgie cardiaque de la clinique Kerckhoff de Bad Nauheim et de l’hôpital universitaire de Giessen, en Allemagne. Elle a porté sur des patients ayant subi un pontage aortocoronarien (PAC), un remplacement valvulaire aortique (RVA), un remplacement ou une reconstruction de la valvule mitrale (RVM) ou une chirurgie combinée (PAC et remplacement valvulaire [RV]) avec circulation extracorporelle, en situation non urgente. L’échelle d’évaluation de l’anxiété et de la dépression à l’hôpital (HADS), le questionnaire d’auto-évaluation des déficits cognitifs (CFQ-S) et le questionnaire d’évaluation externe des déficits cognitifs (CFQ-F) ont été remplis avant l’intervention chirurgicale, ainsi que 3 et 12 mois après la chirurgie. Résultats: Au total, les résultats de 491 patients étaient disponibles aux fins d’analyses (PAC = 182, RVA = 134, RVM = 93, PAC et RV = 82). Des cas de DCPO et une augmentation postopératoire des symptômes de dépression (APOD) ont été observés après chacune des interventions chirurgicales. (Lors du suivi après 3 mois : DCPO selon le CFQ-S [PAC = 7,1 %, RVA = 3,7 %, RVM = 9,7 %, PAC + RV = 9,8 %]; DCPO selon le CFQ-F [PAC = 9,9 %, RVA = 9,7 %, RVM = 9,7 %, PAC + RV = 15,9 %]; APOD [PAC = 7,7 %, RVA = 9,7 %, RVM = 6,5 %, PAC + RV = 8,5 %]. Lors du suivi après 12 mois : DCPO selon le CFQ-S [PAC = 6,6 %, RVA = 7,5 %, RVM = 15,1 %, PAC + RV = 7,3 %]; DCPO selon le CFQ-F [PAC= 7,1 %, RVA = 14,9 %, RVM = 10,8 %, PAC+ RV = 9,8 %]; APOD [PAC = 10,4 %, RVA = 11,2 %, RVM = 6,5 %, PAC + RV = 4,9 %]). Aucun effet intergroupe significatif n’a été observé relativement aux questionnaires CFQ-S et CFQ-F ou à l’échelle HADS. Conclusions: Il est important que les cliniciens portent attention aux déclarations des patients en ce qui concerne la diminution des fonctions cognitives et les symptômes de dépression à la suite d’une chirurgie cardiaque. De telles déclarations sont une indication que des interventions comme l’entraînement cognitif ou la psychothérapie doivent être envisagées. more...
