1. Misconceptions about Numbers and Operations--A Case Study of Preschoolers

Abstract

Background/purpose: Investigation into the misconceptions of preschool students in mathematics and their differences between the ages of 4-5 and 5-6 years old helps form appropriate developmental mathematics teaching programs. However, although several studies have been conducted examining preschoolers' previous knowledge and misconceptions about mathematics, no corresponding research has been found in Greece. This study aims to investigate preschoolers' misconceptions about numbers and operations and to reveal differences between preschoolers aged 4-5 and 5-6 years old. Materials/methods: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to content analysis methodology. Results: The study's results showed that 5-6-year-old preschoolers perform better than those aged 4-5 years old. Most misconceptions of the latter group appeared to be related to reverse counting, identifying arithmetic symbols and their matching quantities, adding and removing numbers without using auxiliary objects and multiplication. On the contrary, some preschoolers aged 5-6 years old needed help adding or subtracting two-digit numbers without the use of auxiliary objects. There were also a few cases where cardinality, division, and multiplication were observed. Conclusion: The misconceptions identified in the two groups of students regarding numbers and operations and their distinct needs that emerged through the research will allow teachers to offer differentiated instruction and personalize teaching support.

Abstract

Abstract A genomic database of all Earth’s eukaryotic species could contribute to many scientific discoveries; however, only a tiny fraction of species have genomic information available. In 2018, scientists across the world united under the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), aiming to produce a database of high-quality reference genomes containing all ~1.5 million recognized eukaryotic species. As the European node of the EBP, the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) sought to implement a new decentralised, equitable and inclusive model for producing reference genomes. For this, ERGA launched a Pilot Project establishing the first distributed reference genome production infrastructure and testing it on 98 eukaryotic species from 33 European countries. Here we outline the infrastructure and explore its effectiveness for scaling high-quality reference genome production, whilst considering equity and inclusion. The outcomes and lessons learned provide a solid foundation for ERGA while offering key learnings to other transnational, national genomic resource projects and the EBP.

With the advent of high throughput sequencing, the amount of genomic data available for animals (Metazoa) species has bloomed over the last decade, especially from transcriptomes due to lower sequencing costs and easier assembling process compared to genomes. Transcriptomic data sets have proven useful for phylogenomic studies, such as inference of phylogenetic interrelationships (e.g., species tree reconstruction) and comparative genomics analyses (e.g., gene repertoire evolutionary dynamics). However, these data sets are often analyzed following different analytical pipelines, particularly including different software versions, leading to potential methodological biases when analyzed jointly in a comparative framework. Moreover, these analyses are computationally expensive and not affordable for a large part of the scientific community. More importantly, assembled transcriptomes are usually not deposited in public databases. Furthermore, the quality of these data sets is hardly ever taken into consideration, potentially impacting subsequent analyses such as orthology and phylogenetic or gene repertoire evolution inference. To alleviate these issues, we present Metazoan Assemblies from Transcriptomic Ensembles (MATEdb), a curated database of 335 high-quality transcriptome assemblies from different animal phyla analyzed following the same pipeline. The repository is composed, for each species, of (1) a de novo transcriptome assembly, (2) its candidate coding regions within transcripts (both at the level of nucleotide and amino acid sequences), (3) the coding regions filtered using their contamination profile (i.e., only metazoan content), (4) the longest isoform of the amino acid candidate coding regions, (5) the gene content completeness score as assessed against the BUSCO database, and (6) an orthology-based gene annotation. We complement the repository with gene annotations from high-quality genomes, which are often not straightforward to obtain from individual sequencing projects, totalling 423 high-quality genomic and transcriptomic data sets. We invite the community to provide suggestions for new data sets and new annotation features to be included in subsequent versions, that will be analyzed following the same pipeline and be permanently stored in public repositories. We believe that MATEdb will accelerate research on animal phylogenomics while saving thousands of hours of computational work in a plea for open and collaborative science.

ABSTRACTBackgroundThis safety analysis investigates treatment-emergent mucosal/cutaneous Candida infections in patients treated with ixekizumab (IXE), an anti-interleukin-17A monoclonal antibody, across the approved indications: psoriasis (PsO), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA).Research design and methodsSafety data were pooled from 25 clinical studies. Incidence rates (IRs) are expressed as per 100 patient-years (PY), using the entire duration of exposure.ResultsCandida infections had an IR of 1.9 per 100 PY in patients with PsO (N = 6892; total PY = 18025.7), 2.0 per 100 PY in patients with PsA (N = 1401; total PY = 2247.7), and 1.2 per 100 PY in patients with axSpA (N = 932; total PY = 2097.7). The majority of treatment-emergent Candida infections were: (i) experienced only once by patients (IR = 1.3;IR = 1.6;IR = 1.0), (ii) mild/moderate in severity (IR = 0.8/0.9;IR = 1.5/0.4;IR = 0.8/0.5) as opposed to severe (IR = 0.0; IR = 0.0; IR = 0.0), (iii) oral Candida or genital Candida (IR = 0.9/0.6;IR = 1.0/0.7;IR = 0.4/0.6), (iv) marked as recovered/resolved during the studies (89.3%;93.8%;90.3%), (v) not leading to IXE discontinuation (0.0%;0.0%;0.1% discontinued), (vi) managed with topical (34.7%;22.2%;11.5%) or no anti-fungal medications (63.5%;77.8%;80.8%) as opposed to systemic therapies (1.5%;0.0%;7.7%), (vii) typically resolved before next visit.ConclusionsThis integrated safety analysis shows that the risk of developing Candida infections is low with IXE, and the severity is mild-to-moderate in most instances across the approved IXE indications.Trial registrationA comprehensive list of the clinical trials and their registration numbers is reported in Table S1 of the supplemental material.

Abstract

To determine whether smear layer management, via conservative etching protocols, and the hydrophobic-rich content of hybrid layers would affect the fatigue strength of resin-dentin interfaces.Bar-shaped dentin beams obtained from sound third molars were wet-polished for 30 s. Dentin was etched with 32 % ortho-phosphoric acid for 3 or 15 s, 10 % meta-phosphoric acid for 15 s or by a prime-and-rinse application using a mild universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, 3M ESPE). Self-etch application served as control. Coating was performed with a solvent-free bisGMA-based resin. Composite buildups were made with a nanofilled composite. Resin-dentin beams with twin-bonded interfaces were sectioned and stored in deionized water for 24 h at 37 ℃ before 4-point flexural quasi-static monotonic testing (n = 16). Stress-life fatigue behavior was evaluated under cyclic loading (n = 35) by the staircase method at 4 Hz. The tension side of cyclic-loaded unfractured beams were evaluated under SEM, along with the micro-morphology of etched dentin surfaces. Monotonic data was analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey Test and cyclic-loaded data by Kruskal-Wallis on Ranks (α = 0.05).Etching protocols and higher hydrophobic-rich content produced significantly higher fatigue life distributions (p 0.05). Dentin demineralization was ranked as OPA 15 s MPA 15 s OPA 3 s P + R SE. Less aggressive etching and coating reduced crack formation at hybrid layers.Current oversimplification trends in resin-dentin bonding constitute a trade-off between hybridization quality and easier adhesive handling. Controlled dentin etching and increasing the hydrophobic-rich content of hybrid layers may be necessary to extend the longevity of mild universal adhesives.

The aim of this investigation was to assess the frequency of registration and reporting adherence of orthodontic trial protocols pre- and post-introduction of the Standard Protocol Items Recommendations for Interventional Trials (SPIRIT) Statement. Materials and method Trial protocols registered in four online registries were sourced at two time periods: (1 January 2010–1 January 2013) and (1 January 2017–1 January 2021). Protocols were screened and data extracted, in duplicate and independently. The reporting adherence of each protocol was assessed in relation to the thirty-three item SPIRIT statement. Fisher’s exact test was used to determine associations between time periods and trial protocol characteristics. Median regression was implemented to assess potential associations between the percent score per protocol and protocol characteristics. Results A total of 100 protocols were analysed. Thirty-three and sixty-seven protocols were registered in the first and second time periods, respectively. An association between period and the timing of registration (prospectively or retrospectively) (P Conclusions There is a general lack of awareness of the importance and relevance of the SPIRIT statement. Registration of orthodontic trial protocols has apparently improved; however, 75.5% SPIRIT statement items were not reported in either study time period. Conclusions There is a general lack of awareness of the importance and relevance of the SPIRIT statement. Registration of orthodontic trial protocols has apparently improved; however, 75.5% SPIRIT statement items were not reported in either study time period. Abstract

Objective Spin, the misinterpretation of non-significant study results, can lead to erroneous conclusions about the effectiveness of interventions. It was the aim of this study to examine the presence and prevalence of spin in the dental literature and to identify potential associations with trials’ characteristics. Methods PubMed was searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between February 12,018 and January 31, 2019. Two reviewers screened the selected articles and evaluated them for spin using a standardized data collection form. Data on the selected RCTs and spin strategy, if present, were recorded for each study. Descriptive statistics and frequencies of various types of spin in the abstract and the main text were calculated and associations between spin and study characteristics were examined. Results Forty-seven RCTs were included in the final sample. Over 60 % of the articles presented some form of spin and 19.1 % presented more than one types of spin in the abstract. More than one types of spin were detected in more than half of the studies evaluated (53.2 %), whereas 78.7 % of the studies screened presented some type of spin in the main text. No statistically significant associations were found between any of the study characteristics and spin or recommendations. There was a discrepancy in the presence of spin between abstracts and in the main text (p = 0.006). Conclusion Dental RCTs’ are not immune to misleading interpretation and both authors and readers should report and evaluate trial results based on the data at hand without unfounded extrapolations. Clinical significance Spin, the conscious or subconscious misinterpretation of non-significant study results, can be misleading when applying trials’ results in everyday clinical practice. Thus, researchers should abstain from including it in their trials and readers should identify it when evaluating a study.

Η παρούσα εργασία εκπονείται με στόχο την ανάδειξη της αναγκαιότητας, χρήσης της τεχνολογίας κατά την διδασκαλία της μουσικής, ειδικά όταν πρόκειται οι μαθητές να δράσουν μουσικά, αυτοσχεδιάζοντας τις προσωπικές τους συνθέσεις. Η τεχνολογία και ο αυτοσχεδιασμός μπορούν να αποτελέσουν σημαντικά εργαλεία και βοηθήματα όχι μονό για τον μαθητή, αλλά και για τον δάσκαλο της μουσικής, ο οποίος στοχεύει στην διαμόρφωση ατόμων δημιουργικών και εφευρετικών. Στο Α μέρος του δεύτερου κεφαλαίου γίνεται αρχικά μια προσπάθεια απόδοσης ορισμού της τεχνολογίας γενικά, αλλά και ειδικά σε συνδυασμό με την μουσική εκπαίδευση. Καταγράφονται στο κεφάλαιο αυτό, τα κύρια συμπεράσματα που απορρέουν από την βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση και έχουν να κάνουν με την τεχνολογία και το νέο μαθησιακό ψηφιακό περιβάλλον. Συγκεκριμένα γίνεται λόγος για : 1) τα αποτελέσματα που παρατηρήθηκαν, μετά από έρευνες σε πραγματικό σχολικό περιβάλλον, όταν η τεχνολογία ενσωματώθηκε «αυθεντικά» στο μάθημα της μουσικής , 2) τον ρόλο του δασκάλου στο νέο ψηφιακό περιβάλλον, 3) την ανάπτυξη και καλλιέργεια της δημιουργικότητας με την βοήθεια της τεχνολογίας, 4) την επιλογή του σωστού τεχνολογικού, μουσικού λογισμικού ώστε οι μαθητές να έχουν την ευκαιρία να αυτοσχεδιάσουν και να δημιουργήσουν χωρίς τον φόβο της έλλειψης μουσικών γνώσεων, και δυτικών μουσικών πρακτικών. Ακολούθως, στο Β μέρος του δεύτερου κεφαλαίου , γίνεται λόγος για την σπουδαιότητα του αυτοσχεδιασμού κατά την εκπαιδευτική διαδικασία. Συγκεκριμένα γίνεται λόγος για: 1) το αμφιλεγόμενο ζήτημα της ορολογίας και του τρόπου προσέγγισης του αυτοσχεδιασμού που συχνά συγχέεται με την σύνθεση, 2) την σημασία του αυτοσχεδιασμού για την δημιουργία ενός γόνιμου μουσικού περιβάλλοντος, 3) τους προβληματισμούς που έχουν ανά καιρούς αναδυθεί γύρω από την διαδικασία του αυτοσχεδιασμού. Έπεται το Κεφάλαιο ΙΙΙ, στο οποίο παρουσιάζεται και περιγράφεται αναλυτικά το πείραμα που πραγματοποιήθηκε στα πλαίσια της εργασίας ώστε να απαντηθούν ερωτήματα που έχουν να κάνουν με το: «Πώς», «Πότε» και «Γιατί», πρέπει να χρησιμοποιείται η τεχνολογία στο μάθημα της μουσικής γενικά, και ειδικά όταν πρόκειται να πραγματοποιηθούν δραστηριότητες με κεντρικό πυρήνα τον αυτοσχεδιασμό. The paper is mainly highlighting the importance of the integration of the technology, in the music teaching process, especially in activities that students have the opportunity to act creatively and musically by improvising their compositions. Technology and improvisation are important tools not only for the students, but also for the music teacher, who aims to shape creative and inventive individuals. After the introduction, in Part A of Chapter II, there is a definition for the technology in general, and also in relation with music education. In this chapter, the main outcomes and thoughts that emerge, from the literature review, and that are related to technology and the new learning digital environment, are recorded. Specifically the main points are as follow : 1) the results that observed, after research in a real school environment, when the technology was integrated in the music lesson, 2) the role of the teacher in the new digital environment, 3) the development and cultivation of creativity when technology is being used ,4) the prerequisites for the right music software, in order to give the opportunity to the students to improvise and create their own music, without worrying about the lack of musical knowledge and the lack of knowledge that is related with western practices. Subsequently, in Part B of Chapter II, the importance of improvisation in the educational process is illustrated. Specifically, the main points are as follow: 1) the controversial issue of the terminology of the "improvisation" that is often used instead of the term "composition", 2) the importance of improvisation in order to create a beneficial musical environment, 3) the most frequent concerns about the improvisation process during the music lesson. Furthermore, in Chapter III, the aims and details of the experiment are presented. The main questions were: "How", "When" and “Why” technology should be used in the music lesson generally, and especially when activities have as a central core the improvisation. Finally, in the epilogue the main conclusions are listed, and subsequent the bibliographic sources are given.

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of a new orthodontic bonding system that incorporates the primer solution in the adhesive. Materials and Methods: 90 anterior bovine teeth were divided in three groups: in Group I, brackets were bonded with Transbond XT system, in Group II with GC Ortho Connect which incorporates the primer in the adhesive, and in Group III, a single layer of primer was applied on the teeth before bonding the brackets with GC Ortho Connect. After a 24-hour latency period, Shear Bond Strength (SBS) and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) were measured. In cases with remnants left mainly on the bracket base, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometry was performed in order to determine the presence of calcium particles. Selected cases were examined with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis and in nanometer scale with a confocal visible light microscope (μsurf revolver, NanoFocus AG, Germany). Results: The mean SBS values were 7.25 ± 0.58 MPa for Group I, 6.57 ± 0.50 MPa for Group II and 7.33 ± 0.56 MPa for Group III. These differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.562). ARI evaluation showed that the debonding failure happened more frequently within the adhesive interface in Group II, whereas this occurred more often at the tooth-adhesive interface in Group III. However, statistical analysis of the ARI scores showed no significant difference in adhesive remnants among the three groups (p = 0.078). Conclusion: The GC Ortho Connect bonding system can be efficiently used for orthodontic bonding. Adding a layer of primer appears to slightly increase the SBS while causing less adhesive to remain on enamel from which brackets were debonded.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the views of preschool teachers using ICT to those who do not, on the basis of the benefits and the barriers that ICT bring in teaching and learning mathematics. Twenty preschool teachers took part in this study: nine who do not use ICT and eleven, who do use them for teaching mathematics. Data were collected with semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the thematic content analysis method. Results indicate that preschool teachers, who use ICT in teaching mathematics, teach mathematical concepts such as spatio-temporal, orientation, classification, matching, serializations, quantities, mathematical operations, patterns, comparisons, volume, shapes, and size. Moreover, despite the benefits of ICT observed by teachers of both groups, but mainly from the one using ICT, the overall use of ICT in the teaching of mathematics is obsoleted. The main barriers of ICT integration, according to preschool teachers are the lack of training on its integration and the preschool teachers’ role during the teaching of mathematics. Implications for in-service teacher training and educational policy are discussed.

Abstract

One of the most widely used cutaneous applications of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (laser) concerns the treatment of vascular lesions. During the past two decades, very significant advances in the application of laser technology in dermatology have occurred, with selective photothermolysis being the most important. This review focuses on the application of modern laser devices (Pulsed Dye Laser, or PDL; potassium titanyl phosphate laser, or KTP; diode laser; and neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminium-garnet laser, or Nd:YAG), as well as the combination of laser and photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of vascular lesions. In particular, both congenital (haemangiomas and port-wine stains) and acquired vascular lesions (facial and leg telangiectasias, rosacea, Poikiloderma of Civatte, spider angioma, pyogenic granuloma, and venous lakes) are discussed. The review of many recent research studies demonstrates that modern applications of lasers in dermatology constitute the finest method for the treatment of vascular lesions, combining the advantages of invasive therapy with the security offered by non-invasive therapy, while in certain cases they are the single and only choice for the treatment of these lesions.

Sixteen New Zealand White rabbits were used. In each animal, two bone defects (8 mm length × 3 mm width × 3 mm depth) were created in the left and right regions of the mandible, respectively. The defect on one side, chosen randomly, was filled with β-TCP/HS (group A) or DBM putty (group B), while the defect on the opposite side was left unfilled in order to serve as a control site. Two animals in each group were sacrificed at the end of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th week after surgery, respectively, and the osteotomy sites were processed for histological evaluation. Our findings confirmed that β-TCP/HS and human DBM putty possess osteogenic activity and can support new bone formation, although at a slower rate than the spontaneous healing response, in rabbit mandibular osseous defects.

These were divided in three groups according to their MP-SN angle [normal: 28–36degrees (G1), hypodivergent: ≤26degrees (G2), hyperdivergent: ≥38degrees (G3)]. Results: It was found that only LAFH was correlated to age across all groups. However, within G1, G2, and G3, and between genders, it was found that there were statistically significant differences for all indicators in relation to age, except IMA ( P > 0.05). In addition, ISY and IMA had a predictive value lower than the chance level (0.5). Conclusion: Bjork’s implant studies have contributed much to understanding facial–skeletal growth; however, this study suggests that their utilization as a tool in classifying extreme skeletal patterns requires careful evaluation of all the parameters involved.

Abstract

Recent developments in image-enhancement technology have enabled clear visualization of the microvascular structure of the esophageal mucosa. In particular, intrapapillary capillary loops (IPCLs ) are observed as brown loops on magnification endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (NBI). IPCLs demonstrate characteristic morphological changes according to the structural irregularity of esophageal epithelium and cancer infiltration, summarized in the IPCL classification. In this review, the process from the first endoscopic description of IPCLs to the eventual development of the IPCL classification is described and discussed, particularly focusing on early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The directionality of the optical module enables the recognition of multiple Cherenkov photons from the same40 K decay and the localisation of bioluminescent activity in the neighbourhood. The single unit can cleanly identify atmospheric muons and provide sensitivity to the muon arrival directions

Abstract

A fission reaction chamber based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPACs) was built for measuring angular distributions of fragments emitted in neutron-induced fission of actinides at the neutron beam available at the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. The detectors and the samples were tilted 45 degrees with respect to the neutron beam direction to cover all the possible values of the emission angle of the fission fragments. The main features of this setup are discussed and results on the fission fragment angular distribution are provided for the Th-232(n,f) reaction around the fission threshold. The results are compared with the available data in the literature, demonstrating the good capabilities of this setup. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract

The accurate knowledge of relevant nuclear data is crucial for the design of advanced nuclear systems. These data include neutron cross sections of various plutonium isotopes and other minor actinides. The 242Pu(n,f) cross section was measured at the CERN n_TOF facility, taking advantage of the wide energy range (from thermal to GeV) and the high instantaneous flux of the neutron beam. Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross section of U235 from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV and of U238 from 1.4 to 200 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with a detection efficiency of no less than 97%. The high instantaneous flux and the low background characterizing the n_TOF facility resulted in wide-energy-range data (0.02 to 200 MeV), with high energy resolution, high statistics, and systematic uncertainties bellow 3%. Previous investigations around the energy of the fission threshold revealed structures attributed to β-vibrational levels, which have been confirmed by the present measurements. Theoretical calculations have been performed, employing the talys code with model parameters tuned to fairly reproduce the experimental data.

Abstract

Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n-TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries. Abstract

This paper presents the characteristics of the existing CERN n_TOF neutron beam facility (n_TOF-EAR1 with a flight path of 185 meters) and the future one (n_TOF EAR-2 with a flight path of 19 meters), which will operate in parallel from Summer 2014. The new neutron beam will provide a 25 times higher neutron flux delivered in 10 times shorter neutron pulses, thus offering more powerful capabilities for measuring small mass, low cross section and/or high activity samples., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract

The Am241(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN using deuterated benzene liquid scintillators, commonly known as C6D6 detectors, and time-of-flight spectrometry. The results in the resolved resonance range bring new constraints to evaluations below 150 eV, and the energy upper limit was extended from 150 to 320 eV with a total of 172 new resonances not present in current evaluations. The thermal capture cross section was found to be σth=678±68 b, which is in good agreement with evaluations and most previous measurements. The capture cross section in the unresolved resonance region was extracted in the remaining energy range up to 150 keV, and found to be larger than current evaluations and previous measurements.

Abstract

See paper for full list of authors; Neutron capture cross sections in the keV neutron energy region are the key nuclear physics input to study the astrophysical slow neutron capture process. In the past years, a series of neutron capture cross section measurements has been performed at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN focussing on the Fe/Ni mass region. Recent results and future developments in the neutron time-of-flight technique are discussed.
