Este artículo se centra en los verbos modales deónticos que aparecen en un corpus de artículos de investigación sobre turismo. La originalidad de este estudio radica principalmente en la selección de dos secciones fundamentales del artículo de investigación para su recepción e impacto como contribución científica, a saber, la introducción y la conclusión. Como ya se expresó en Álvarez-Gil y Domínguez-Morales (2018; 2021) y Álvarez-Gil (en prensa), el artículo de investigación en turismo es, con mucho, uno de los menos explorados. La metodología implica el uso de herramientas de lingüística de corpus. Dado que el contexto es fundamental para la identificación de los significados modales, parte del análisis de los textos requiere también la realización de análisis directo. Los resultados de este estudio sugieren que ciertamente existe variación no sólo en cuanto a las formas utilizadas en cada una de las introducciones y conclusiones, sino también en cuanto a los sentidos identificados. La modalidad deóntica en el corpus analizado se atestigua para expresar predicción, organización de los contenidos en el artículo, así como para expresar autoridad. Otro sentido evidente de los modales deónticos es el de indicar consejos que puedan resultar beneficiosos para el sector turístico.

Este trabajo presenta un estudio de los verbos modales con significado dinámico para la expresión de la posibilidad en el artículo de investigación sobre turismo en las secciones de introducción y conclusión del artículo. A continuación, el objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar estos verbos modales dinámicos en un corpus de revistas científicas de la disciplina del turismo. En este estudio se entiende que los verbos modales dinámicos contribuyen a definir el punto de vista del hablante. En este sentido, este análisis determinará qué sección tiene la mayor frecuencia de formas modales dinámicas. Además, se destacarán las funciones que cumplen estos verbos modales en las secciones estudiadas, según el contexto en el que se encuentran estas formas.

It is not surprising that there is a clear interest in specialised English language teaching at a time when academia needs to evidence its strong connection to social practices and internationalization (Carrió-Pastor 2019, 2020). This is a timely book, both in scope and usefulness. The contents are organised in such a way as to allow an understanding of methodological practices, firstly by establishing the difference between CLIL, i.e. Content and Language Integrated Learning, and EMI, i.e. English as a Medium of Instruction. In principle, these two terms refer to clear concepts, but in practice the distinction does not always seem to be so apparent. In fact, this book succeeds in providing a theoretical stance and examples to illustrate and clarify these approaches. The usefulness of this Palgrave volume for language professionals, namely teachers, researchers and newcomers, is easy to foresee.

This paper looks into the use of modal verbs in a corpus of abstracts excerpted from scientific papers in the field of tourism. These texts have been written by specialists in tourism studies. Our study will show the way in which modality is used to show the authors’ intention as to the contents of their texts. The pragmatic implications of modal uses will be highlighted bearing in mind the purposes of the abstractgenre within the academic paper. The methodology of study is corpus linguistics, and the framework of analysis includes the works of Palmer (1979; Palmer, 1986)and Collins (2009), among others. This paper is part of a larger research on modal verbs in touristic scientific papers.

This volume in the prestigious Linguistic Insights book series (Peter Lang) fills an acknowledged lacuna in studies considering the tourism research article from a gender perspective. Indeed, the attention paid to the tourism research article (RA) has been, if anything, fragmentary, since, as noted in Lin and Evans (2012), no attempt has been made to fully outline the generic structure of the RA in tourism. This is precisely one of the focuses of interest of this monograph, which aims to provide genre scholars and language professionals with an outline of the genre pattern of the RA and the lexicogrammatical choices associated with each generic section, together with a detailed description of the specific stance-taking devices. This is really the main aim of this book, as its title expressly calls for. Much of the information presented in this monograph, as attributed therein, belongs to a major research project conducted over the years on the language of tourism in English and other languages (cf. Álvarez- Gil, Payet, & Sánchez Hernández, 2020).
