In this work, novel bio-based hydrogel beads were fabricated by using soybean extract as raw waste material loaded with Lambrusco extract, an Italian grape cultivar. The phenolic profile and the total amount of anthocyanins from the Lambrusco extract were evaluated before encapsulating it in soybean extract-based hydrogels produced through an ionotropic gelation technique. The physical properties of the produced hydrogel beads were then studied in terms of their morphological and spectroscopic properties. Swelling degree was evaluated in media with different pH levels. The release kinetics of Lambrusco extract were then studied over time as a function of pH of the release medium, corroborating that the acidity/basicity could affect the release rate of encapsulated molecules, as well as their counter-diffusion. The pH-sensitive properties of wine extract were studied through UV-Vis spectroscopy while the colorimetric responses of loaded hydrogel beads were investigated in acidic and basic solutions. Finally, in the framework of circular economy and sustainability, the obtained data open routes to the design and fabrication of active materials as pH-indicator devices from food industry by-products.

The wide availability of accurate sensors currently hosted by smartphones are enabling new participative urban management opportunities. Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) allows people to actively participate in any aspect of urban planning, by collecting and sharing data, reporting issues to public administrations, proposing solutions to urban planners, and delivering information of potential social interest to their community. Although collected data can be very helpful to enhance the quality of life of citizens, mobile users are still reluctant to use their devices to take advantages of the opportunities offered by the digitized society, mainly due to privacy issues. From August to December 2018, the city of Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, was used as a living lab environment for an MCS application called ParticipACT Brazil, a socio/technical-aware crowdsensing platform. While the current literature focuses on MCS from a purely technical point of view, this research demonstrated that a multidisciplinary approach that includes both human sciences and ICT is needed in order to better identify critical issues, highlights the untapped potential of MCS paradigm, and suggests research methodologies that could provide benefits for all the actors involved (researchers, public administrators, and citizens).

Grape pomace, as by-product of wine making, is a source of polyphenols, fibers, fatty acids, metals, and organic acids, which could be used as raw component for the production of sustainable materials. Novel biodegradable films based on pomaces, from Negroamaro (red) and Fiano (white), Italian grape cultivars, were fabricated. Physical, chemical and antioxidant properties of material produced were characterized. In particular, migration tests of phenols from pomace films to aqueous food simulant medium were investigated. Data obtained allowed to evaluate the antioxidant activity in terms of total phenol assay and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity assay and phenols profile. The characterization of phenolic composition confirmed the peculiarity of some compounds such as anthocyanins (191.17 ± 10.3 μg/g film) in red skin pomace film (NPF) and a great amount of flavanols (76.36 ± 1.72 μg/g film) in white skin pomace film (FPF). Antioxidant activity of polyphenols resulted in active films and was confirmed in migration test with aqueous food simulants. Physical properties of produced films were then studied in terms of morphological, thermal, mechanical and barrier properties. Finally, in the framework of sustainability and circular economy, the presented data paves the way to the design and production of active materials for packaging application starting from a widely available by-product derived from wine-making chain.

Il termine World Literature è, di per sé, un algoritmo complesso. Nel ventunesimo secolo, infatti, tanto l’idea di mondo, che l’idea di letteratura non possono più essere letti in modo univoco o semplificato, né possono essere determinati solo da confini (nazionali, culturali, linguistici) imposti artificialmente ad una realtà che è ormai tecnologicamente ed economicamente interdipendente. Una realtà che, a partire dalla metà del Novecento e in modo iper-accelerato nel nuovo millennio, ha riconfigurato le forme e i modi della comunicazione (ogni forma di comunicazione, ivi inclusa quella “letteraria”) in una realtà ridefinita prima in termini di oralità secondaria o post-oralità, poi in termini di convergenza digitale. Il pianeta Terra è diventato così un artefatto sfuggente e in divenire, plasmato da nuove geopolitiche che si forgiano a partire da un dialogo spesso perturbante tra vecchi e nuovi soggetti di potere e su base sempre più transnazionale; soggetti che hanno gli strumenti per condizionare anche i modi e le forme con cui non solo si raccontano, ma anche si ascoltano (o no) le ‘storie’ di chi il potere, così come il mondo, lo osserva, lo narra o, peggio, lo subisce, a volte inconsciamente. Poiché l’idea di World Literature è ormai il paradigma, seppur mobile, col quale si indagano oggi le produzioni letterarie, non si può dunque non tenere conto di questi fattori ambientali nel momento in cui ci si interroga sul senso, sui limiti, sulle potenzialità che ha, in tale contesto, il segno letterario nelle sue diverse forme. Questo capitolo parte da questo assunto per pensare alla dimensione etica e performativa della World Literature, cercando di posizionarla rispetto a quelle che sono state definite come le grandi sfide del contemporaneo, che sono prima di tutto sociali e, poi, anche letterarie: neocolonialismi, omologazione culturale, migrazioni (forzate o meno), accessibilità alle risorse, sostenibilità (non solo ambientale), controllo e vulnerabilità, diversità, nuove identità transumane o postumane. La domanda di fondo che guida l’indagine è inevitabilmente politica: la World Literature può essere definita in termini di pratiche attive e partecipate di narrazione, capaci di dare non solo voce ma anche risposte e modelli per capire come abitare in modo solidale ed equo il pianeta terra?

Questo saggio indaga l’esperienza identitaria indigena nel Canada contemporaneo alla luce del rinnovato interesse turistico che, negli ultimi anni, ha portato molti indigeni ad inserirsi nel circuito di promozione di quella che, nell’immaginario occidentale, resta la terra dei grandi laghi, delle immense pianure e della natura “da cartolina”. Fondata nel 2015, la Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada vuole migliorare la condizione socioeconomica delle popolazioni indigene, fare rete per promuovere la rappresentatività locale e il dialogo tra le diverse comunità, i governi provinciali e quello federale. Riappropriarsi di una industria del turismo definita come “autenticamente indigena” vuol anche dire trasformare l’autorappresentazione identitaria in una agenzia utile alla rinascita socioeconomica di aree e comunità povere, tenute per lungo tempo ai margini del sistema industriale e culturale creato, nella sua ossatura, dai governi coloniali. Ai fini di queste prime riflessioni, diventa concettualmente stimolante rileggere l’interesse per il turismo indigeno anche alla luce di una idea complessa di “migrazione”, ovvero di un ripensamento dell’idea di “migrazione” che tenga conto della Storia delle popolazioni indigene per cogliere un’idea complessa di “mobilità culturale”; un’idea che è oggi al centro di percorsi di riappropriazioni identitarie postcoloniali che toccano la nazione canadese nel suo complesso e, in modo particolare, le comunità delle origini. The synthesis of novel block copolymers, namely poly(limonene-phthalate)-block-poly(pentadecalactone) and poly(limonene-phthalate)-block-poly(pentadecalactone) is here described. To achieve this synthesis, a bimetallic aluminum based complex (1) was used as catalyst in the combination of two distinct processes: the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of macrolactones such as ω-pentadecalactone (PDL) and ω-6-hexadecenlactone (HDL) and the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of limonene oxide (LO) and phthalic anhydride (PA). The synthesis of di-block polyesters was performed in a one-pot procedure, where the semi-aromatic polyester block was firstly formed by ROCOP of LO and PA, followed by the polyethylene like portion produced by ROP of macrolactones (PDL or HDL). The obtained di-block semiaromatic polyesters were characterized by NMR and GPC. The structural organization was analyzed through XRD. Thermal properties were evaluated using differential thermal analysis (DSC) and thermogravimetric measurements (TGA) either in air or in nitrogen atmosphere.

AIM To clinically assess the aesthetics of smile and the possible influencing factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this explorative study, an initial questionnaire on demographic variables and perception of own quality of smile (Visual Analogue Scale) was administered by a first examiner. A second blinded assessor examined all patients and recorded clinical data. In addition, for each patient, the Smile Aesthetic Index (SEI) was calculated. Descriptive statistics and multilevel logistic models were performed. RESULTS One hundred consecutive subjects were enrolled. The mean SEI was 8.4 ± 1.2, while the mean patient's perception of smile was 7.1 ± 2.0. However, they did not correlate (r = 0.16 from -0.04 to 0.34; p = .12). Gingival recessions were perceived by 21.9% of subjects, tooth alignment by 38.6%, tooth dyschromia by 34.3%, and missing papilla/diastema by 26.7%. In this paper, the use of hemp fibers modified with graphite oxide for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Parameters such as contact time, pH, temperature, initial concentration of dye and ionic strength were varied and their effects on the adsorption recovery were evaluated. The adsorption process attained the equilibrium within 30 min while the adsorption capacity was found to increase with increasing contact time. The experimental data were fitted through a pseudo-second order model. Maximum adsorption capacity slightly increases with temperature changing from 54 mg/g to 58 mg/g at pH = 7.5, from 37 mg/g to 45 mg/g at pH = 3 and from 44 mg/g to 49 mg/g at pH = 12, by increasing the temperature from 20 °C to 80 °C indicating that the process is slightly endothermic (ΔH = 3.43 kJ/mol). The thermodynamic parameters were even calculated demonstrating that the process is spontaneous (ΔG ≈ −4.4 J/mol K and ΔS = 3.16 J/mol K)). Finally, a mathematical algorithm was applied to forecast the response surface model. A second order model was chosen to fit the experimental data and the statistical effect of the process parameters were estimated. A numerical optimization was even performed to individuate the optimal set of process parameters (pH = 9.25, T = 53.8 °C and C0 = 13.2 mg/L) which maximizes the removal capacity. A possible adsorption mechanism was even presented. So, it was proved the efficiency of the adsorption of a novel, inexpensive and sustainable composite material obtained from agro-waste resources by performing reusability cycles.

This research aims for designing and fabricating green and sustainable systems for an efficient removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The hybrid beads, obtained by using ionotropic gelation technique and calcium chloride as cross-linking agent, are composed of sodium alginate matrix, hemp hurd as agro-waste resource and halloysite nanoclay (HNTs). The produced composite beads were characterized morphologically by using SEM and EDX techniques. The batch adsorption studies were performed up to 24 hours using methylene blue (MB) as model hazardous dye in order to investigate the effect of HNTs content (0-35% wt) and pH (2, 7 and 12) on the adsorption capacity. In neutral conditions, a maximum adsorption capacity of 32 mg/g was obtained for sample with 0% of HNTs while it increases up to 41, 43 and 50 mg/g for 5, 20 and 35%wt, respectively. Moreover, swelling/deswelling behavior and point of zero charge (PZC) analysis were even investigated since they are known to affect the adsorption process. A slight increase in PZC can be observed by adding clay nanotubes from 7.42 (0% wt HNTs) up to 7.98 (35% wt HNTs). The experimental data were fitted through first order model, pseudo-second order model and intraparticle diffusion model, demonstrating that the adsorption phenomenon is well described by second order process as well as that the process is mainly characterized by boundary diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. Finally, diffusion of dye was evaluated as function of HNTs content and H+ concentration appearing to decrease from pH=2 up to pH=7 and then to increase in alkaline medium (pH=12). Diffusion coefficient and recovery % trends were modeled through design of experiment methodology.

Il saggio indaga l’idea di “libertà condizionata” legata alle narrazioni monodirette di un establishment (di volta in volta politico, religioso, culturale, ecc.) che affronta un “trauma”. Nella sua forma più visibile, il trauma è spesso percepito come frutto di una contingenza storicamente databile (le varie crisi economiche; le torri gemelle); nella sua forma più invisibile, però, è la conseguenza di una realtà molto più complessa che, negli Stati Uniti d’America (al centro del saggio) poggia su una ingiustizia di fondo, solitamente di natura socio-economica (ovvero è ‘sistemica’ e la crisi serve solo a renderla più evidente). Come ricostruire/come ricostruirsi dopo una “crisi” se la crisi è solo un momento (visibile) di un trauma che è, invece, sistemico? In particolare, per riflettere sulla premessa suddetta il saggio mette a confronto due testi letterari entrambi classificati come ucronie: It Can’t Happen Here di S. Lewis (1935) e The Plot Against America di P. Roth (2004). I due romanzi sono scritti dopo due crisi importanti (Wall Street) e 9/11. Sono entrambi ambientati nell’America degli Anni Trenta ed entrambi raccontano la costruzione di una nuova forma di potere totalitario in seno alla democrazia, alimentata proprio dalla situazione di crisi o post crisi. Una costruzione che passa anche dall’uso non etico delle nuove forme di comunicazione di massa, utilizzate per creare consenso senza consenso e manipolare l’opinione pubblica in modo pervasivo ma inconsapevole. Nell’uno come nell’altro caso, il dopo crisi deve affrontare un problema importante: ricostruire la fiducia dei cittadini e contrastare il senso di paura disseminato ‘ad arte’. Il dopo crisi deve così affrontare il problema del ritorno alla normalità, in contrasto allo ‘stato di eccezione’ che, invece, guida la gestione dell’emergenza, seppure in forme diverse. Uno stato d’eccezione che, se perdura al di là della crisi (è il caso, per esempio, del Patriot Act post 9/11, ancora attivo oggi), inficia ogni tentativo etico di ‘ricostruzione’ del tessuto sociale.

Fake news and trolling are usually perceived as aggressive forms of communication, unsettling and falsifying our perception of reality; they are the trendy topics of most discourses on media, the target of today witch-hunt, the new villains in a post digital scenario where fact checking has become the superhero that will save us, and restore ‘the Truth’. This essay pursues the idea that, within our new media eco-systems, fake news, trolling – as well as other forms of unethical pseudo-communication – are but the updated version of the age-old idea of mythmaking, something that we can better navigate through the rediscovering of literature as a probing tool and not simply as a subject, as per the teachings of the Toronto School of Communication. Fake News is a growing tree, with roots in Classic mythmaking and branches spreading across a complex inter-media scenario that affects our way of being humans (or trans-humans), as well as our way of inhabiting our hyper-realities.

This essay traces the making of Joris Ivens’ documentary film The Spanish Earth (1937) in relation to the complex issues of memory and oblivion of traumatic events rendered in/through art forms. It was during the Spanish Civil War that people started to «see» reality in real time, through a «screen» (a documentary, a film, a photograph) and almost simultaneously on both sides of the ocean. It was during that war that a new perceptive schizophrenia started because, through new mediators of memory, people learnt to be simultaneously inside and outside the event, at once actors and spectators. Ivens, Hemingway, Gellhorn and Dos Passos are here discussed as questioning the ontological status of their diverse art forms, as well the ethical implications that the new scenarios of the time were posing to creative thinking. Hence, the making of The Spanish Earth becomes an interesting outpost to investigate the growing role of media in the construction of «historical accounts», as well as of shared or divided memories representing traumatic events. Similarly, it sheds lights on the thorny issue of USA neutrality at a time when opposing ideologies were fasting leading to a new, tragic World War.

Partendo da assiomi e idee sviluppate nell’ambito dell’Ecologia dei Media, questo volume rilegge quattro romanzi, ormai veri e propri classici del canone modernista e tardo modernista statunitense (Il grande Gatsby; Manhattan Transfer; Chiamalo sonno; Il giovane Holden) per riflettere su come autori diversi per formazione ed esperienze di vita (Francis Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Henry Roth, Jerome David Salinger) abbiano saputo captare le origini di un passaggio (non solo) culturale di fatto epocale, quello che ha portato a definire il Novecento come il secolo americano, il secolo inscritto nell’età elettrica o di Marconi. Cosmopolis di Don DeLillo è il romanzo che fissa il divenire di quel secolo attraverso uno specchietto retrovisore letterario che incornicia le intuizioni di quei classici. L’Ecologia dei Media è un campo di ricerca interdisciplinare dalle profonde radici letterarie e umanistiche che concepisce i media come ambienti e che indaga il ruolo primario che i media (intesi come forme della comunicazione letterata, orale o post-letterata), le tecnologie e le forme simboliche hanno nel divenire delle questioni umane. È, dunque, un campo di indagine in seno al quale la letteratura costituisce un territorio privilegiato per esplorare il farsi di un ambiente tecnologicamente complesso che porta a rivedere le definizioni di individuo, di società, di arte e, anche, di segno letterario.

La Torà e il Talmud, il Buddismo Zen e l’Induismo Advaita Vedanta, i mistici persiani Farīd ad-dīn ‘Attār e Rūmī, Primo Levi, Alexander Trocchi, Constantino Kavafis, Dylan Thomas sono solo alcuni dei testi, dei mondi e degli autori che sottendono l’esplorazione artistica di Leonard Cohen, mentre sono stati Federico Garcia Lorca e Irving Layton a dare forma compiuta al bosco sacro di un autore che è rimasto per tutta la vita un “canadese in libero esilio”. F.R. Smith, A.M. Klein, Louis Dudek sono i maestri di Montreal che portano il giovane Cohen a diventare, con Margaret Atwood, Dennis Lee e molti altri ancora, una delle voci più importanti del Rinascimento Canadese. Una stagione letteraria che ha fatto emergere altre voci, come quelle di Alootook Ipellie e Louise Bernice Halfe, messe a tacere dalla storia coloniale di una nazione sottratta alle popolazioni indigene.

Non di rado, istituzioni governative nazionali o sovranazionali sembrano imporre alle comunità decisioni politiche ed economiche, escludendole di fatto da una riflessione partecipata, accessibile e condivisa. In questo contesto, anche la letteratura può giocare un ruolo importante nel preservare un approccio ecologicamente corretto al nostro essere cittadini del mondo. Wikileaks o gli archivi di Snowden hanno fatto scalpore per avere rivelato ciò che qualcuno voleva rimanesse segreto; ma quando la letteratura gioca un ruolo simile ci dà, oltre all’informazione, anche l’ispirazione per affermare la nostra differenza e originalità come cittadini capaci di pensiero indipendente. Con questo scopo, la scrittrice canadese di origine ucraina, Janice Kulyk Keefer ha riscritto un classico del Novecento (La terra desolata di T.S. Eliot) non solo per ricordare e rileggere gli scontri accaduti nella città di Québec in occasione del terzo Summit delle Americhe (aprile del 2001), ma anche per stimolarci come cittadinanza attiva. La sua Zona desolata, che molto deve anche alla Disobbedienza Civile di H.D. Thoreau, aiuta così, partendo dal particolare, a riflettere su questioni ecologicamente universali che riguardano con urgenza e da vicino tutti.

Le storie legate al 1968 canadese richiedono chiavi di lettura di quel momento storico-culturale un po’ diverse da quella che è diventata nel tempo – e in occidente – la narrazione dominante a livello transnazionale. Pur se inscritto nel ‘sistema mondo’, il 1968 a Nord degli USA segna un momento fondamentale più per la definizione dello stesso Canada che per la volontà di rinnovamento o di cambiamento di un dato ordine (politico, economico, culturale, sociale), che pure si registra. Toronto, Montreal o Vancouver non sono le prime città che ci vengono in mente quando si parla di quegli anni. Il Canada negli anni sessanta è, di fatto, una giovane nazione post-coloniale che sta ancora rivedendo la propria carta costituzionale, ovvero una nazione che si sta ridefinendo nel suo progetto politico, culturale e identitario. Ed è qui che diventa utile recuperare un paradigma letterario, che si configura come luogo simbolico per definire cosa sia stato soprattutto il 1968 (e tutto quel decennio) in Canada. Il decennio 1960-70, infatti, viene connotato nei manuali di letteratura canadese come “Rinascimento Letterario”, ovvero come il momento in cui il Canada inizia ad esprimere una letteratura davvero autonoma, capace di creare nuovi canoni e nuovi classici slegati dai modelli inglesi dominanti fino a quel momento. E’ una letteratura che segue perfettamente la storia del Canada, che si è trovato passare da una fase coloniale a una fase postcoloniale in un tempo piuttosto breve, passando, per dirla con il poeta Robert Kroetsch, da una fase di pre-nazione a una fase di post-nazione senza mai essere diventato veramente una nazione. E in effetti, il Rinascimento degli anni sessanta porta infine il Canada al centro dell’attenzione della comunità accademica quale nazione culturalmente contrapposta agli USA, capace di proporre progetti artistici in sintonia con il mondo libero e orientato a nuove forme di giustizia sociale, ecologica ed economica. Ovvero: romanzi e opere del postmoderno, che inglobano tutte le istanze di altri post dell’epoca, il post-coloniale in primis. Le rivoluzioni che hanno luogo in Canada in quel decennio sono così rivoluzioni un po’ diverse da quelle che hanno luogo nelle altre realtà occidentali, pur inscrivendosi in quel percorso di ribellione e protesta. Anche nella pacifica Toronto si trovano cartelli affissi nei negozi che pregano gli Hippies di entrare dalla porta sul retro. Ma la rivoluzione di cui ancora si parla in Canada quando si pensa al decennio 1960-70 non è tanto quella legata ai movimenti della protesta studentesca, quanto quella che ha avuto luogo in Québec, nel Canada francofono, e che è passata alla Storia come ‘rivoluzione tranquilla’, anche se in realtà ebbe onde di rimbalzo violente, sorprendenti per la nazione.

Anti-rhetorical war novels are particularly useful to work out differences between the two conflicts, and to speculate on the socio-political orders characterizing the two post-war periods. The anti-rhetorical war novels written in the 1920s by European writers who fought are, in fact, linked by some patterns that transcend the writer’s nationality and cultural identity, and which force a shared knowledge and understanding of the event: they bearwitness to the making of a new epoch, to the fact that after the First World War the world could never be the same again. In this respect, these novels, as well as those written by American writers in the same period, become token of a passage, objective correlatives of situations and feelings that, today, historians themselves acknowledge as shared facts and truths.

To propose a method to measure the esthetics of the smile and to report its validation by means of an intra-rater and inter-rater agreement analysis.Ten variables were chosen as determinants for the esthetics of a smile: smile line and facial midline, tooth alignment, tooth deformity, tooth dischromy, gingival dischromy, gingival recession, gingival excess, gingival scars and diastema/missing papillae. One examiner consecutively selected seventy smile pictures, which were in the frontal view. Ten examiners, with different levels of clinical experience and specialties, applied the proposed assessment method twice on the selected pictures, independently and blindly. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Fleiss' kappa) statistics were performed to analyse the intra-rater and inter-rater agreement.Considering the cumulative assessment of the Smile Esthetic Index (SEI), the ICC value for the inter-rater agreement of the 10 examiners was 0.62 (95% CI: 0.51 to 0.72), representing a substantial agreement. Intra-rater agreement ranged from 0.86 to 0.99. Inter-rater agreement (Fleiss' kappa statistics) calculated for each variable ranged from 0.17 to 0.75.The SEI was a reproducible method, to assess the esthetic component of the smile, useful for the diagnostic phase and for setting appropriate treatment plans.

Storytelling is old, but in our digital age its means are new. When an event of huge cultural significance occurs (such as the sinking of the Costa Concordia, the “Occupy Wall Street” Protest, or the coming of Boat-People to Europe) stories ricochet from TV to Internet, from cell phone to text message with a speed and proliferation unknown even a decade ago. We need new and effective ways to understand the making of cultural processes in a multi-media environment in order to learn and develop strategies to make sense of cultural shifts in a reduced and very limited span of time. My essay draws on research in both Memory Studies, Literary Studies and Media Ecology to open up the study of storytelling to old and new media psycho-dynamics so to start to develop a methodology of investigation that will facilitate a deeper understanding of the role of multimedia storytelling in the ways in which both individuals and groups cognitively and emotionally navigate profound cultural shift, as well as in the ways in which they create and preserve their memories through time and technological change.

From the second half of the nineteenth century, new electric media started to redefine not only the world-environment, but also the way individuals related to it, having a complex impact on their psycho-sensorial dynamics and attitudes. The world-phenomenon of the ‘global village,’ as theorised by critics in the second half of the twentieth century, begins with the organisation of the first electric forms of communication (second half of the nineteenth century) and ends with the new world-wide-web; the first electric medium triggered an irreversible change in terms of the individual’s sensibility and sensorium that later media simply fastened and consolidated. The works of Modernist writers and artists stand in the middle between the first explorations in communication and the twentieth-century technological explosion; this essay proves that they can be approached as interesting probes to observe the impact of new media on society in its whole.
