The experimental evaluation of the performance of a corrugated apron under free flow subcritical and submerged conditions was conducted, with a focus on scour patterns over the apron. Comparative analysis with a smooth rigid apron revealed an increase in scour depth upon the application of the corrugated apron under free and submerged jet flow conditions. The implementation of a corrugated apron resulted in a considerable reduction in scour depth and length compared to a smooth rigid apron. The maximum reduction in scour depth and length amounted to 79% and 83%, respectively, while the minimum reduction observed was 13% in scour depth and 11% in scour length. Additionally, investigations into velocity and turbulence characteristics over both smooth and corrugated aprons were conducted. It was observed that the rate of turbulence intensity increase within the scour hole due to the presence of a smooth apron surpassed that of the corrugated apron. Scour downstream of the corrugated apron exhibited distinct delineations, including regions of jet diffusion, transition, acceleration, and a recirculating zone near the bed of the scour hole. Arid regions are susceptible to flash floods and severe drought periods, therefore there is a need for accurate and gap-free rainfall data for the design of flood mitigation measures and water resource management. Nevertheless, arid regions may suffer from a shortage of precipitation gauge data, whether due to improper gauge coverage or gaps in the recorded data. Several alternatives are available to compensate for deficiencies in terrestrial rain gauge records, such as satellite data or utilizing geostatistical interpolation. However, adequate assessment of these alternatives is mandatory to avoid the dramatic effect of using improper data in the design of flood protection works and water resource management. The current study covers 75% of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's area and spans the period from 1967 to 2014. Seven satellite precipitation datasets with daily, 3-h, and 30-min temporal resolutions, along with 43 geostatistical interpolation techniques, are evaluated as supplementary data to address the gaps in terrestrial gauge records. The Normalized Root Mean Square Error by the mean value of observation (NRMSE) is selected as a ranking criterion for the evaluated datasets. The geostatistical techniques outperformed the satellite datasets with 0.69 and 0.8 NRMSE for the maximum and total annual records, respectively. The best performance was found in the areas with the highest gauge density. PERSIANN-CDR and GPM IMERG V7 satellite datasets performed better than other satellite datasets, with 0.8 and 0.82 NRMSE for the maximum and total annual records, respectively. The spatial distributions of maximum and total annual precipitation for every year from 1967 to 2014 are generated using geostatistical techniques. Eight Probability Density Functions (PDFs) belonging to the Gamma, Normal, and Extreme Value families are assessed to fit the gap-filled datasets. The PDFs are ranked according to the Chi-square test results and Akaike information criterion (AIC). The Gamma, Extreme Value, and Normal distribution families had the best fitting over 56%, 34%, and 10% of the study area gridded data, respectively. Finally, the selected PDF at each grid point is utilized to generate the maximum annual precipitation for 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100-year rasters that can be used directly as a gridded precipitation input for hydrological studies. Background and Objectives: In addition to a suboptimal and rapidly diminishing response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, hemodialysis (HD) patients are at risk for developing a severe COVID-19 infection. In 2022, the combination of cilgavimab and tixagevimab (Evusheld, AstraZeneca) was approved for COVID-19 preexposure prophylaxis in high-risk groups. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the humoral response and short-term safety of this antibody combination in a group of HD patients. Materials and Methods: Seventy-three adult maintenance hemodialysis patients were recruited from a tertiary-care hospital for this double-blinded, non-randomized, placebo-controlled study. Patients were placed into two groups: the intervention group (n = 43) received a single 300 mg dosage of cilgavimab and tixagevimab, while the control group (n = 30) received a saline placebo. The titer of COVID-19-neutralizing antibodies was measured at baseline and after 1 and 6 months. The patients were evaluated for any drug-related adverse effects and monitored for six months for the emergence of any COVID-19-related events. Results: Patients in the intervention group were substantially older and had been on HD for longer (p = 0.002 and 0.006, respectively). The baseline antibody levels were higher in the Evusheld group. The antibody level in the intervention group increased significantly after 1 month and remained consistent for 6 months, whereas the antibody level in the control group fell significantly after 6 months during the study period (Wald χ2 = 30.620, p < 0.001). The drug-related adverse effects were modest and well-tolerated, and only seven patients experienced them. Six months after study enrollment, 10 patients in the intervention group and 6 patients in the control group had been infected with COVID-19, respectively. In the control group, ICU admission and mortality were observed, but in the intervention group, the infection was milder with no aggressive consequences. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the short-term safety and efficacy of tixagevimab–cilgavimab for COVID-19 preexposure prophylaxis in HD patients. The log-wake law was successful in mapping velocity fields for uniform flow over flat surfaces, even in cases of wake effects (velocity dips, wall effects, and secondary currents). However, natural riverbeds with undulations and bedforms challenge these models. This study introduces a moment-based empirical method for rough estimation of the velocity fields over stationary 2D bedforms. It proposes three polynomial velocity profile templates (first, fifth, and eighth orders) with coefficients deduced analytically while taking into account an array of flow conditions and assumptions, including slip velocity at the bed, mass and moment of momentum conservations, imposing inviscid potential flow near the water surface, and incorporation of near-bed shear stress utilizing a moment-based Chezy formula. Remarkably, the coefficients of these polynomials are primarily reliant on two crucial velocity scales, the depth-averaged velocity (uo) and the moment-derived integral velocity (u1), along with the dimensionless reattachment coefficient (Kr). Validation of the proposed approach comes from ten lab experiments, spanning Froude numbers from 0.1 to 0.32, offering empirical data to validate the obtained velocity profiles and to establish the relationship of the spatial variation in the normalized u1 velocity along bedforms. This study reveals that the assumption of a slip boundary condition at the bed generally enhances the accuracy of predicted velocity profiles. The eighth-order polynomial profile excels within the eddy zone and close to reattachment points, while the fifth-order profile performs better downstream, approaching the crest. Importantly, the efficacy of this approach extends beyond water flow to encompass airflow scenarios, such as airflow over a negative step. The research findings highlight that linear velocity, as employed in Vertically Averaged and Moment models (VAM), exhibits approximately 70% less velocity mismatch compared to constant Vertically Averaged (VA) models. Moreover, the utilization of the fifth-order and eighth-order velocity profiles results in substantial improvements, reducing velocity mismatch by approximately 86% and 90%, respectively, in comparison to VA models. The insights gained from this study hold significant implications for advancing vertically averaged and moment-based models, enabling the generation of approximate yet more realistic velocity fields in scenarios involving flow over bedforms. Providing an accurate spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall and filling data gaps are pivotal for effective water resource management. This study focuses on the Asir region in the southwest of Saudi Arabia. Given the limited accuracy of satellite data in this arid/mountain-dominated study area, geospatial interpolation has emerged as a viable alternative approach for filling terrestrial records data gaps. Furthermore, the irregularity in rain gauge data and the yearly spatial variation in data gaps hinder the creation of a coherent distribution pattern. To address this, the Centered Root Mean Square Error (CRMSE) is employed as a criterion to select the most appropriate geospatial interpolation technique among 51 evaluated methods for maximum and total yearly precipitation data. This study produced gap-free maps of total and maximum yearly precipitation from 1966 to 2013. Beyond 2013, it is recommended to utilize ordinary Kriging with a J-Bessel semivariogram and simple Kriging with a K-Bessel semivariogram to estimate the spatial distribution of maximum and total yearly rainfall depth, respectively. Additionally, a proposed methodology for allocating additional rain gauges to improve the accuracy of rainfall spatial distribution is introduced based on a cross-validation error (CVE) assessment. Background: There has been massive progress in congenital cardiac surgery outcomes analysis in the last two decades. The RACHS-1 score was developed to adjust for the huge difference in congenital cardiac pathologies when comparing the operative mortality for children undergoing paediatric congenital heart surgery. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted on all patients undergoing cardiac surgery in all congenital heart surgery centers in Dakahlya Governorate, where we assessed the operative mortality post-surgery and compared it to the RACHS-1 expected mortality to assess the accuracy of using the RACHS-1 to predict mortality in our society. Results: This study included 559 patients in two years period, VSD was the most frequent diagnosis (13.6%), followed by Single ventricle (11.3%), then TOF (10.4%). VSD closure was the most frequent procedure (11.3%), followed by mB-T shunt (8.9%), then TOF repair (8.1%). Day-30 outcome among the studied cases Mortality was uncommon (7.9%), the main cause was heart in aetiology (43.2%). Mortality was significantly highest in HLHS, and then followed by TAPVD. The overall mortality according to each category was 1.2%, 3%, 8.57%, 17.39%, 0% and 57.1% for category 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Conclusion: RACHS-1 is an accurate method to predict mortality early post operatively. Ventricular septal defect (VSD) was the most frequent diagnosis. VSD closure was the most frequent procedure, followed by mB-T shunt, then TOF repair, most of them were elective. The most common category of RACHS-1 was 3.
