Bilimsel açıklamalar ile ilgili çalışmalar büyük oranda kesin bilimlerdeki (fizik, kimya vb.) açıklamaların doğası ve statüsüne odaklanmıştır. Öte yandan son yıllarda özel bilimlerdeki açıklamaların doğası ve statüsü bilimsel açıklamalar üzerine çalışan bilim felsefecilerinin dikkatini çekmeye başlamıştır. Bir yandan çoğumuz özel bilimlerin (biyoloji, ekonomi, psikoloji, sosyoloji vb.) en azından zaman zaman açıklama verebildiğine inanırız. Öte yandan, özel bilimlerdeki açıklamalar fizik gibi kesin bilimlerdeki klasik açıklama standartlarına uymamaktadır. Diğer bilimlerde olduğu gibi ekonomide de idealize edilmiş ve soyut teorik modeller önemli bir role sahiptir. Her ne kadar bazı felsefeciler ve ekonomistler ekonomideki modellerin epistemik önemi hakkında kuşku duysalar da, çoğumuz ekonominin en azından bazen açıklamalar verebildiğine inanırız. Bu tez ekonomi pratiğine odaklanarak bilim felsefesindeki açıklamalarla ilgili meseleleri ekonomik modellerin gerçek dünya problemlerini nasıl açıkladığı sorusu ile ilişkilendirmektedir. Bu anlamda bu tezin amacı ekonomik modeller yardımıyla elde ettiğimiz açıklamaların doğasını ve statüsüne ışık tutmayı amaçlamaktadır.Tezin birinci bölümü literatürde sıklıkla tartışılmış olan ve ekonomideki modellerin paradigmatik bir örneği olarak ele alınan Harold Hotelling'in (1929) lokasyon seçimi ile igili modelini ele almaktadır. Tezin ikinci bölümünde tartışılan konular bu modelin analizini zorunlu kılmaktadır. Model basit olarak belirli varsayımlar çerçevesinde iki satıcının kaarını en üst düzeye çekebilmesi için satıcıların bitişik bir setilde yerleşmesini ve sattıkları ürünlerin benzeşmesini açıklamaktadır. Bu bölüm ayrıca Hotelling modeli ile ilgili bir literatür taramasını içermektedir.Tezin ikinci bölümünde soyutlama ve idealizasyonlar analiz edilerek Reiss'ın `Açıklama Paradoksu` (AP) ve `Diriltilmiş Açıklama Paradoksu` (DAP) makalelerindeki argümanlar eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla ele alınmaktadır. Tezin bu bölümünde Reiss'ın AP'deki temel kaygısının doğruluk/yanlışlık ikiliği olmadığı dolayısıyla paradoksun bu temelde yorumlanmaması gerektiği iddia edilmektedir. Burada önerilen yoruma göre AP yanlış modellerin nasıl açıklama verebildiği ile ilgili bir paradoks değildir, daha ziyade paradoks, uygulanamayan modellerin nasıl açıklama verebildiği ile ilgilidir.Tezin üçüncü bölümünde üç tane model aracılığıyla literatürdeki olanaklı ve sahici açıklamalar ayrımı incelenmektedir. Durum çalışmalarından elde edilen sonuçlara göre en azından bazı modellerin sahici açıklama verme işinde rol alabildiği ve ekonomideki açıklamalar ile diğer disiplinler arasındaki açıklamalar arasında tür değil derece farkı olduğu iddia edilmektedir.Bu bölümde incelenen modeller yardımıyla ekonomideki bazı modellerin en azından zaman zaman sahici açıklamalar verilmesinde işlevsel oldukları iddia edilmektedir. Although the status and nature of explanations in exact sciences have been and are being studied widely by philosophers of science, only in the last couple of decades explanations in the special sciences have attracted the attentions of philosophers of science. On the one hand most of us believe that the special sciences sometimes succeed in providing explanations. On the other, it looks as though most explanations in special sciences fail to conform some of the standard criteria of explanations offered in the so-called exact sciences such as physics. Like other sciences, idealized and abstract theoretical models have an important role in economics. Even though some philosophers and economists are suspicious about the epistemic import of models in economics, most of us believe that the economics at least sometimes succeed in providing explanations. By focusing on economic practice itself this thesis seeks to relate issues concerning scientific explanations in philosophy of science to the problem of how economic models are used to explain real-world economic phenomena. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to shed light onto the nature and the status of explanations offered by economic models. Chapter 1 examines one of the paradigmatic and well discussed economic models; namely Harold Hotelling's (1929) model of spatial location as it sets the stage for the discussions included in the chapter 2. What the model says is that if a market satisfies certain assumptions then two economic agents end up with located juxtaposed position and the goods they produce will be similar. I then survey the literature on the model briefly. Chapter 2 revisits what is called the `Explanation Paradox` (EP for short, Julien Reiss, 2012). After explaining what the paradox is, I suggest that we should read the EP in a new light. I argue that the paradox turns out to be not how false models explain (because of course false models don't explain) but how models that don't apply explain. Chapter 3 presents three case studies in order to illuminate whether there are how actual explanations in economics. The results obtained by case studies show that there are at least some models that play roles in yielding actual explanations and the difference between explanations provided by economic models and explanations given in other disciplines is a matter of degree, not a matter of kind. Thus, I argue that causally complex world of economic phenomena can be better accounted by their respective contexts and interest relative why questions. One of the best ways to make sense of variations in explanations in economics is to endorse pluralistic and pragmatic approach. I argue that such pluralistic and pragmatic approach entail neither antirealism about economic models nor any kind of relativism about our answers to the question of whether a particular model explains some particular economic phenomenon. 196
