Interest in the extraction of phytochemical bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols from biomass, has recently increased due to their valuable biological potential as natural sources of antioxidants, which could be used in a wide range of applications, from foods and pharmaceuticals to green polymers and bio-based materials. The present research study aimed to provide a comprehensive chemical characterization of the phytochemical composition of forest biomass (bark and needles) of softwood species (Picea abies L., H. Karst., and Abies alba Mill.) and to investigate their in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities to assess their potential in treating and healing infected chronic wounds. The DPPH radical-scavenging method and P–LD were used for a mechanistic explanation of the biomolecular effects of the investigated bioactive compounds. (+)-Catechin, epicatechin, rutin, myricetin, 4 hydroxybenzoic and p-cumaric acids, kaempherol, and apigenin were the main quantified polyphenols in coniferous biomass (in quantities around 100 µg/g). Also, numerous phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, terpenes, lignans, secoiridoids, and indanes with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antihemolytic, and anti-carcinogenic potential were identified. The Abies alba needle extract was more toxic to microbial strains than the eukaryotic cells that provide its active wound healing principles. In this context, developing industrial upscaling strategies is imperative for the long-term success of biorefineries and incorporating them as part of a circular bio-economy.

Propolis, a complex bee product, is a source of numerous bioactive principles, beneficial for human health, therefore it is intensively studied. In the present work, extracts of propolis from Bihor Romanian County were studied to identify the relationship between the polyphenolic derivatives profile and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Extracts were obtained using water and 25%, 50%, and 70% ethanolic solutions (w/w), at 2:1, 4:1, and 6:1 liquid: solid ratios (w/w). 21 polyphenolic derivatives were quantified by UHPLC-MS, proving that the extracts composition strongly depends on the solvent. The sum of quantified polyphenolics extracted varied between 1.5 and 91.2 mg/g propolis. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated using the free radicals 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging methods. Antimicrobial efficiency was tested against Gram-positive (B. subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), and fungi (C. albicans) by disc-diffusion method. All extracts, even the aqueous ones, demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activity. Chemometric methods (partial least squares) and a saturation-type model were used to evaluate the contribution of various bioactive principles in building the antioxidant capacity of extracts. Both experimental and modelling results show that 50% ethanolic extracts provide a rich polyphenolics profile and ensure a good antioxidant capacity.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was applied for polyphenols extraction from Romanian propolis, followed by comparison with previous maceration work. The effects consisted not only in time reduction and extraction yield increase, but also in polyphenolics profile modification in terms of flavonoids / polyphenolic acids ratio. The operating parameters were ultrasounds (US) field exposure time (10-100 min), solvent composition (water, 25 % and 50 % ethanolic solutions, w/w), and liquid:solid ratio (2:1, 4:1 and 6:1, w:w), while keeping temperature constant. 24 polyphenolic derivatives were quantified by UHPLC-HRMS. UAE favored the extraction of pinocembrin, isorhamnetin and chrysin in water and 25 % ethanol, leading to different profiles than maceration, and further influences upon the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. All extracts demonstrated increased antibacterial and antifungal activity compared to maceration, particularly the 50 % ethanolic extracts, which presented a three-times larger antioxidant capacity. Chemometric methods (Principal Component Analysis - PCA and Partial Least Squares Regression - PLS) and a saturation type model were used to correlate the polyphenolics profiles and antioxidant capacity. Experimental and modelling results concluded that 50 % ethanolic solutions and UAE represent the favorable operating conditions in terms of yield and extracts quality.

This study provides important data on the distribution, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in surface waters and sediments collected from dam reservoirs on middle and lower course of the Olt River, the main tributary of the Danube, until the discharge into the Black Sea. A wide variation range of total PAHs concentrations in water (from 1.3 to 46.2 ng/L) and sediment (from 1.78 to 614.04 μg/kg) samples was emphasized by the results. The highest average PAHs concentration in water was recorded in the cold season and the lowest in the summer. In sediments, no differences were observed depending on the sampling period. Spatial distribution of PAHs in waters and sediments was correlated with the main anthropogenic activities along the river course. Regardless of the method used to attribute PAH sources (diagnostic ratios of specific PAHs, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), it was confirmed that the potential anthropogenic sources of PAHs were both pyrogenic (incomplete combustion of biomass and coal) and pyrolytic (incomplete combustion of liquid fossil fuels and vehicle exhaust emissions), with a dominant pyrolytic input. Ecological risk assessment based on environmental quality standards, mean effect range-median quotient (m-ERM-Q), toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) and risk quotient (RQ) methods indicated potentially low ecological risks from PAHs. The ecological status of the Olt river waters poses no potential risk, and pollution of surface sediments can be classified as low polluted, except for two sites near industrial activities classified as moderately polluted. Therefore, a regular monitoring of PAHs concentration in the waters and sediments should be performed to prevent further contamination of PAHs in the studied area, especially in densely populated industrial areas.

There is a growing trend in food industry in combining safety and quality attributes of products with their distinct regional identity. In this study we used data on several elements (Cd, Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb and Ni) and phenolic compounds (gallic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, trans-resveratrol, rutin, quercetin and vanillin) as complementary markers in the attempt to characterise and differentiate wines from three wine-growing areas (Murfatlar, Recas and Jidvei) of Romania, according to their geographical and varietal origin. Wines from south-eastern region (Murfatlar) were characterized by their lower content in Cu, Cr and Ni, compared with wines from western (Recas) and central (Jidvei) region, while the content of phenolic compounds in the wine samples showed a visible variation, depending both of the grape variety and geographical origin. The statistical processing tools applied to our results allowed robust di�erentiation between regions, wine varieties, and vintage year. The phenolic compounds (gallic acid, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, rutin, quercetin and resveratrol) showed the best correlations for the varietal discrimination of wines. Using discriminant analysis, a correct classification of the wines by variety was achieved in proportion of 88.89% (based only by phenolic compounds) and 92.59 % (based both on phenolic compounds and metals), revealing that the content of Cu, Cr and Ni is significant for discrimination. Moreover, a 100% successful classification of wines by region of origin was accomplished.

Gleditsia triacanthos is an aggressive invasive species in Eastern Europe, producing a significant number of pods that could represent an inexhaustible resource of raw material for various applications. The aim of this study was to extract cellulose from the Gleditsia triacanthos pods, characterize it by spectrophotometric and UHPLC&ndash, DAD-ESI/MS analysis, and use it to fabricate a wound dressing that is multi-functionalized with phenolic compounds extracted from the leaves of the same species. The obtained cellulose microfibers (CM) were functionalized, lyophilized, and characterized by ATR-FTIR and SEM. The water absorption and retention capacity as well as the controlled release of phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties evaluated in temporal dynamics were also determined. The antimicrobial activity against reference and clinical multi-drug-resistant Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter cloacae, Candida albicans, and Candida parapsilosis strains occurred immediately after the contact with the tested materials and was maintained for 24 h for all tested microbial strains. In conclusion, the multi-functionalized cellulose microfibers (MFCM) obtained from the reproductive organs of an invasive species can represent a promising alternative for the development of functional wound dressings with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as being a scalable example for designing cost-effective, circular bio-economy approaches to combat the accelerated spread of invasive species.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the efficiency of Allium sativum hydro-alcoholic extract (ASE) againstFigure growth, biofilm development, and soluble factor production of more than 200 biodeteriogenic microbial strains isolated from cultural heritage objects and buildings. The plant extract composition and antioxidant activities were determined spectrophotometrically and by HPLC–MS. The bioevaluation consisted of the qualitative (adapted diffusion method) and the quantitative evaluation of the inhibitory effect on planktonic growth (microdilution method), biofilm formation (violet crystal microtiter method), and production of microbial enzymes and organic acids. The garlic extract efficiency was correlated with microbial strain taxonomy and isolation source (the fungal strains isolated from paintings and paper and bacteria from wood, paper, and textiles were the most susceptible). The garlic extract contained thiosulfinate (307.66 ± 0.043 µM/g), flavonoids (64.33 ± 7.69 µg QE/g), and polyphenols (0.95 ± 0.011 mg GAE/g) as major compounds and demonstrated the highest efficiency against the Aspergillus versicolor (MIC 3.12–6.25 mg/mL), A. ochraceus (MIC: 3.12 mg/mL), Penicillium expansum (MIC 6.25–12.5 mg/mL), and A. niger (MIC 3.12–50 mg/mL) strains. The extract inhibited the adherence capacity (IIBG% 95.08–44.62%) and the production of cellulase, organic acids, and esterase. This eco-friendly solution shows promising potential for the conservation and safeguarding of tangible cultural heritage, successfully combating the biodeteriogenic microorganisms without undesirable side effects for the natural ecosystems.

In anticipation of the food crisis, developing innovative products and technologies to increase crop yield and quality is a necessity. In this context, the aim of this study was to develop a phytostimulant based on Tagetes erecta extract and rhizobacteria to increase the antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi. The hydroalcoholic extract from T. erecta flowers was characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometric assays (total phenolic content, total flavonoids content, reducing sugar content), qualitatively by ATR-FTIR and quantitatively for individual compounds by UHPLC-HESI analysis. The antioxidant activity was evaluated and the phytostimulation capacity was done on the radish and cucumber. The variants of the concentration that stimulated the rhizobacteria (Bacillus sp.) proliferation were selected by evaluating the influence on the microbial viability in a liquid medium. The antifungal activity against fungal pathogens (Monilinia laxa, Fusarium graminearum, Aspergillus niger) was determined by reducing mycelium growth in solid and liquid media. The synergistic effect between optimal levels of rhizobacteria-containing T. erecta extract showed a significant decrease in mycelium development. Thus, PGPR strains treated with T. erecta extract could be applied as biocontrol agents against plant pathogens and stimulate vegetable seedlings.

The producers of essential oils from the Republic of Moldova care about the quality of their products and at the same time, try to capitalize on the waste from processing. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the chemical composition of lavender (Lavanda angustifolia L.) essential oil and some by-products derived from its production (residual water, residual herbs), as well as to assess their “in vitro” antimicrobial activity. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of essential oils produced by seven industrial manufacturers led to the identification of 41 constituents that meant 96.80–99.79% of the total. The main constituents are monoterpenes (84.08–92.55%), followed by sesquiterpenes (3.30–13.45%), and some aliphatic compounds (1.42–3.90%). The high-performance liquid chromatography analysis allowed the quantification of known triterpenes, ursolic, and oleanolic acids, in freshly dried lavender plants and in the residual by-products after hydrodistillation of the essential oil. The lavender essential oil showed good antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Xanthomonas campestris, Erwinia carotovora at 300 μg/mL concentration, and Erwinia amylovora, Candida utilis at 150 μg/mL concentration, respectively. Lavender plant material but also the residual water and ethanolic extracts from the solid waste residue showed high antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium chrysogenum, Bacillus sp., and Pseudomonas aeroginosa strains, at 0.75–6.0 μg/mL, 0.08–0.125 μg/mL, and 0.05–4.0 μg/mL, respectively.

In this work a comparative assessment was performed on individual and total polyphenols and biochemical properties of some Feteasca Neagra red wines obtained from grapes cultivated with different farming technologies (organic vs. conventional). The effect of a 30% cluster thinning treatment in both organic and conventional vineyard, compared to control plots with no thinning, was also monitored. The wines were obtained during two vintages, one with more favourable climatic conditions and one less favourable, in the period 2010–2019. Our results indicate that by applying a 30% cluster thinning treatment in the vineyard it is possible to increase the concentration of total and individual polyphenols of the resulted Feteasca Neagra wines. Furthermore, the differences observed between the phenolic profiles of wines from conventionally and organically produced grapes showed that organic Feteasca Neagra wines have higher phenolic compounds concentrations and antioxidant properties, with some important individual phenols accumulating in larger quantities than in the case of conventional wines. The beneficial effect of the organic cultivation is more evident in years characterised by less favourable climatic conditions. The statistical analysis tools applied to the analytical data allowed a good discrimination of experimental wine variants according to the vine cultivation technology (organic vs. conventional, with and without cluster thinning) and vintage. Thus, the results indicated that the applied cultivation technologies, especially when both organic cultivation and cluster thinning are combined, can greatly improve the polyphenolic content of Feteasca Neagra wines. The absolute value of the increase in polyphenol concentration was higher in favourable years, but the relative increase, in percentages, as compared to control wines, was higher in less favourable years. The combination of both viticultural practices may be thus exploited in order to obtain wines with higher polyphenolic content, which leads to better structure, better ageing potential, enhanced nutritional and antioxidant properties.

INTRODUCTION Honey has been considered to have therapeutic properties since ancient times and among the factors responsible for such activity are phenolic compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids from different natural sources. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the phenolic compounds profile and bioactive properties of different honey types from Romanian flora in order to develop reliable tools for honey floral origin, thus contributing to the honey traceability in the European Union context. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-three honey samples were examined, including unifloral (acacia and rape), polyfloral, honeydew honeys and mixture honeys. Phenolic acids and flavonoids were isolated from the water soluble honey matrix using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) method and analysed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detector electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS). Honey bioactive properties were measured in honey dissolved in 80% ethanol using UV-visible spectrophotometric methods. Multivariate statistical tools (principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis) were used for honey classification. RESULTS The results of this study confirm that honey samples had similar, but quantitatively different, phenolic acids and flavonoids profiles and bioactive properties, related with honey floral source. Coloured honeys, such as honeydew honey, show high phenolic composition and bioactive properties and implicitly a high therapeutic potential compared with the other floral honeys. CONCLUSION Distinctive clusters obtained by principal component analysis enabled us to consider that honeydew and polyfloral honeys could be distinguished from acacia and rape honey with the analytical methods developed. Based on this study, the methods might be promising tools for honey traceability, which needs to be explored on a larger set of samples with different regional floral origins in future studies.

Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.), a popular and widely cultivated fruit world-wide, contains bioactive compounds responsible for their health benefits. Here we report the amounts of some bioactive compounds: two major triterpenes (oleanolic and ursolic acids) and polyphenols (phenolic acids, flavan-3-ols, flavonoids and t-resveratrol), together with bioactive properties of twelve apple cultivars measured by chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods. Significant variations were found comparing the bioactive potential of the investigated cultivars. High contents of phenolic acids were identified in the Montuan, Golden Delicious and Cretesc cultivars, while the most flavonoid dominant was the Richard cultivar. Starkrimson, Jonatan, Beliy Naliv and Richard cultivars present higher antioxidant capacity. Oleanolic acid ranged from 11 to 83 mg/g apple extract, while ursolic acid ranged from 55 to 436 mg/g apple extract, with higher amounts in Richard and Montuan cultivars. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) allowed the discrimination of apple cultivars depending on polyphenolic and triterpene acids composition. Caffeic acid, gallic acid and epicatechin were identified as the main bioactive compounds in Starkrimson, Jonathan, Beliy Naliv and Richard cultivars, while ursolic and oleanolic acids were identified in high amounts in Richard, Montuan, Golden Delicious, Idared and Beliy Naliv apple cultivars. The results obtained in this study will contribute to the understanding of the bioactive composition of apples as well as the importance of their capitalization to obtain value-added products that promote human health.

Considering the growing interest in functional foods, the identification of the individual species of elements is of great importance in understanding specific nutraceutical properties. The present study aims to compare the dynamic of the elemental content (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Se), total polyphenols, and antioxidant activity of Trifolium pratense L. and Medicago sativa L. sprouts in different germination stages. The elemental profile was established by atomic absorption spectroscopy after the microwave acid digestion of the samples, while total polyphenols and anti-radical activity were evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. Phenolic compounds and anti-radical activity of both alfalfa and red clover sprouts varied with germination stages. Germination can significantly increase the anti-radical activity in the first 3 days of germination, followed by a decline in the following days. An increase in total polyphenols was noticed, starting from the second day of germination in both plant species. There were significant (p &lt, 0.05) differences for Ca, Na, Fe, K, Zn, and Mg contents among the sprouts, depending on the germination stage and plant species. The calcium contents of alfalfa ranged between 200.74 &micro, g/g DW (raw seeds) and 2765.31 &micro, g/g DW (sprouted), while in red clover between 250.83 &micro, g/g DW and 601.59 &micro, g/g DW. Maximum selenium content in alfalfa sprouts, reached in the 3rd day of germination (11.42 &micro, g/g DW), exceeded the maximum value measured in red clover (9.42 &micro, g/g DW). The data were subject to statistical processing using analysis of variance (ANOVA), multivariate analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA).

Identification and quantification of polyphenols in plant material are of great interest since they make a significant contribution to its total bioactivity. In the present study, an UPLC-Orbitrap-MS/MS approach using the variable data acquisition mode (vDIA) was developed and applied for rapid separation, identification, and quantification of the main polyphenolic compounds in Medicago sativa L. and Trifolium pratense L. sprouts in different germination stages. Based on accurate MS data and fragment ions identification strategy, a total of 29 compounds were identified by comparing their accurate masses, fragment ions, retention times, and literatures. Additionally, a number of 30 compounds were quantified by comparing to the reference standards. Data were statistically analysed. For both plant species, the sprouts of the third germination day are valuable sources of bioactive compounds and could be used in phytotherapy and nutrition. Although Trifolium pratense L. (Red Clover) is considered to be a reference for natural remedies in relieving menopause disorders, alfalfa also showed a high level of biological active compounds with estrogenic activity.

One of the most important issues in the wine sector and prevention of adulterations of wines are discrimination of grape varieties, geographical origin of wine, and year of vintage. In this experimental research study, UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopic screening analytical approaches together with chemometric pattern recognition techniques were applied and compared in addressing two wine authentication problems: discrimination of (i) varietal and (ii) year of vintage of red wines produced in the same oenological region. UV-Vis and FT-IR spectra of red wines were registered for all the samples and the principal features related to chemical composition of the samples were identified. Furthermore, for the discrimination and classification of red wines a multivariate data analysis was developed. Spectral UV-Vis and FT-IR data were reduced to a small number of principal components (PCs) using principal component analysis (PCA) and then partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were performed in order to develop qualitative classification and regression models. The first three PCs used to build the models explained 89% of the total variance in the case of UV-Vis data and 98% of the total variance for FR-IR data. PLS-DA results show that acceptable linear regression fits were observed for the varietal classification of wines based on FT-IR data. According to the obtained LDA classification rates, it can be affirmed that UV-Vis spectroscopy works better than FT-IR spectroscopy for the discrimination of red wines according to the grape variety, while classification of wines according to year of vintage was better for the LDA based FT-IR data model. A clear discrimination of aged wines (over six years) was observed. The proposed methodologies can be used as accessible tools for the wine identity assurance without the need for costly and laborious chemical analysis, which makes them more accessible to many laboratories.

The tremendous impact of natural and anthropogenic organic and inorganic substances continuously released into the environment requires a better understanding of the chemical status of aquatic ecosystems. Water contamination monitoring studies were performed for different classes of substances in different regions of the world. Reliable analytical methods and exposure assessment are the basis of a better management of water resources. Our research comprised publications from 2010 regarding the Lower Danube and North West Black Sea region, considering regulated and unregulated persistent and emerging pollutants. The frequently reported ones were: pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim), pesticides (atrazine, carbendazim, and metolachlor), endocrine disruptors—bisphenol A and estrone, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorinated pesticides, and heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Hg, Cu, Cr). Seasonal variations were reported for both organic and inorganic contaminants. Microbial pollution was also a subject of the present review.

Romania has tradition in walnut culture and favorable climatic conditions. In order to establish the suitable cultivars for growing into the Northern Oltenia area several walnut cultivars of different origin were evaluated for productivity and fruits quality. Twelve Romanian cultivars and two foreign ones with terminal bearing and 10 cultivars with lateral bearing from France and U.S.A. were studied during 18 years of yielding with no irrigation. The group of lateral bearing cultivars proved to be more productive in the environmental conditions of the study area, the highest average yields were recorded for ‘Vina’ (3.64 t ha-1), ‘Hartley’ (3.59 t ha-1), ‘Ferjean’ (3.52 t ha-1), ‘Payne’ (3.45 t ha-1), ‘Pedro’ (3.39 t ha-1), etc. The most productive terminal bearing cultivars were: ‘Jupânești’ (2.88 t ha-1), ‘Valcor’ (2.77 t ha-1), ‘Franquette’ (2.71 t ha-1), ‘Valcris’ (2.62 t ha-1), etc. Although the lateral bearing cultivars emphasized good yields, their extensive culture into the areas with continental type of climatic conditions should be further analysed. The walnut kernel and oil content show that the cultivars are very similar regarding chemical composition when growing under same conditions in Northern Oltenia. ********* In press - Online First. ：The aim of the study was to investigate the differences between walnut genotypes of various geographical and genetic origins grown under the same or different environmental conditions. The biological material analyzed consisted in walnut kernels of 34 cultivars, nine advanced selections, and six hybrids harvested in 2015 and 2016, summing up to a total of 64 samples. The walnuts, walnut oil, and residue were characterized in respect to their chemical (proximate composition&mdash, fat, protein, nutritional value, fatty acids profile by 1H-NMR) and carbon-13 isotopic composition. The data was used to statistically discriminate the cultivars according to composition, geographical area of origin, and year of harvest, comparing the Romanian cultivars, selections, and hybrids with the internationally available ones.

：The aim of the study was to investigate the differences between walnut genotypes of various geographical and genetic origins grown under the same or different environmental conditions. The biological material analyzed consisted in walnut kernels of 34 cultivars, nine advanced selections, and six hybrids harvested in 2015 and 2016, summing up to a total of 64 samples. The walnuts, walnut oil, and residue were characterized in respect to their chemical (proximate composition-fat, protein, nutritional value, fatty acids profile by ¹H-NMR) and carbon-13 isotopic composition. This work demonstrates the application of voltammetric sensors based on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) modified with polypyrrole doped with different doping agents for the rapid fingerprinting of different white and red wines followed by the discrimination and classification depending on grape variety and vintage year. Disposable SPCEs were used as working electrode for the electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole in the presence of different doping agents using chronoamperometry at a fixed potential of 0.8 V. Polypyrrole modified SPCE were used for direct analysis of wines, after appropriate dilution with 0.1 M KCl. Cyclic voltammograms illustrate waves corresponding to the electrochemical activity of the polypyrrole and doping agent, but also waves corresponding to the oxidation of different compounds, mostly phenolic compounds. Multivariate statistical analysis based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were used in order to evaluate the discrimination and classification capability of the proposed Ppy/DSA-SPCE for different white and red wines. LDA applied to the voltammetric data allowed to establish mathematical models able to classify some red and white wines by variety, with accuracy ranged from 50.00 % to 100.00 %. Also, the proposed electrochemical methodology was capable to discriminate young wines from old wines aged more than five years.

This work reports the application a sensor array based on modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) in conjunction with chemometrics for wine discrimination and classification according to the varietal origin of the grapes. Three SPCEs modified with e nanomaterials such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and polypyrrole (Ppy) doped with 1-decanesulfonic acid sodium salt (DSA) were used. Voltammetric signals obtained with individual sensors and jointed to form a sensor array were used as inputs to develop the qualitative and quantitative models employing principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Generally, satisfactory results were obtained, with discrimination capabilities of 86.72% for SWCNT/SPCE, 92.31% for MWCNT/SPCE and 78.17% for Ppy/DSA/SPCE for the investigated white wine varieties. The proposed sensors array based on modified SPCEs can be used for wine discrimination with a reasonable accuracy (72.00%). The LDA discriminant model based on sensors array was able to classify the Sauvignon Blanc (100.00%), Columna (91.67%) and Riesling Italian (80.00%) wines with high degree of accuracy.

Wine geographical traceability is an important topic in the context of wine authentication and for that, many researchers worldwide have addressed this subject by developing different methodologies based on multivariate analysis of natural chemical composition data (inorganic or organic parameters) and isotopic signature. The goal of this work was to assess the potential of elemental composition and strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) of wines from important wine-producing regions in Romania, located in relatively small geographical areas, in order to highlight reliable markers for wine geographical origin discrimination. Elemental profile determinations were performed by ICP-MS, GFAAS, and FAAS techniques after microwave acid digestion of the wine samples. The 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio of the resulted extracts was determined by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS), after separating strontium and rubidium using cation-exchange chromatography with Dowex 50W-X8 resin and the complexation ability of the carboxylic acid EDTA. The variation of elemental composition (Ga, Sr, and Al), Ca/Sr ratio, and the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the investigated wine clearly demonstrated that these variables are suitable tracers for wine geographic origin determination. The proposed methodology allowed a 100 % successful classification of wines according to the region of provenance.

The assessment of wine traceability and authenticity is a major concern that has gained a lot of interest internationally since the wine has always been subjected to various fraudulent practices. Practiced since ancient times, wine fraud has become more sophisticated in the present day, taking many forms. Consumers, regulatory bodies and manufacturers are all interested to have reliable analytical tools and information to allow the authentication and detection of wine adulteration or incorrect labelling. This research study evaluates and proposes a possible strategy for the detection of adulterated sweet or medium sweet red table wines using appropriate chemical parameters which can reveal prohibited practices in the winemaking process. The work is performed on 29 table wine samples, bought from the market, packed in PET bottles. Exogenous addition of sugar and water in the counterfeited table red wines was detected by the measurement of stable isotopes content (δ13C and δ18O) known as origin markers and supplementary confirmed by other classical parameters, as the alcoholic strength of the wines (‰ vol.) and the presence of 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) and of synthetic sweeteners or synthetic red dyes used to correct deficiencies of taste and colour. Additionally, the nature and profile of anthocyanins, as indicator of the red colour of wine, was investigated in the table wines and then compared with that of authentic wines obtained by microvinification of Vitis vinifera, in order to determine their authenticity.

Methodologies for chemometric classification of five authentic red wine varieties from Murfatlar wine center, Romania, young and aged are reported. The discriminant analysis based on several anthocyanins, organic acids, (13)C/(12)C, (18)O/(16)O and D/H isotopic ratios, (1)H and (13)C NMR fingerprints revealed a very satisfactory categorization of the wines, both in terms of variety and vintage, thus illustrating the validity of selected variables for wine authentication purposes. LDA applied to the combined data shows 85.7% classification of wines according to grape variety and 71.1% classification of wines according to vintage year, including a control wine set for each categorization, thus allowing an accurate interpretation of the data. Thereby, anthocyanins, certain anthocyanin ratios, oxalic, shikimic, lactic, citric and succinic acids, sugars like glucose, amino acids like histidine, leucine, isoleucine and alanine, and also 2,3-butanediol, methanol, glycerol and isotopic variables were significant for classification of wines.

Consumers are increasingly interested in the characteristics of the products they consume, including aroma, taste, and appearance, and hence, scientific research was conducted in order to develop electronic senses devices that mimic the human senses. Thanks to the utilization of electroanalytical techniques that used various sensors modified with different electroactive materials coupled with pattern recognition methods, artificial senses such as electronic tongues (ETs) are widely applied in food analysis for quality and authenticity approaches. This paper summarizes the applications of electrochemical sensors (voltammetric, amperometric, and potentiometric) coupled with unsupervised and supervised pattern recognition methods (principal components analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), partial least square (PLS) regression, artificial neural network (ANN)) for wine authenticity assessments including the discrimination of varietal and geographical origins, monitoring the ageing processes, vintage year discrimination, and detection of frauds and adulterations. Different wine electrochemical authentication methodologies covering the electrochemical techniques, electrodes types, functionalization sensitive materials and multivariate statistical analysis are emphasized and the main advantages and disadvantages of using the proposed methodologies for real applications were concluded.

This paper is an overview of screening methods recently developed for emerging halogenated contaminants and their transformation products. The target screening methods are available only for a limited number of emerging pollutants since the reference standards for these compounds are not always available, but a risk assessment of those micropollutants in environment must be performed anyhow. Therefore, the chromatographic techniques hyphenated with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) trend to become indispensable methods for suspect and non-target screening of emerging halogenated contaminants. HRMS is also an effective tool for tentatively identification of the micropollutants' transformation products existing in much lower concentrations. To assess the transformation pathway of halogenated contaminants in environment, the non-target screening methods must be combined with biodegradation lab experiments and also with advanced oxidation and reduction processes that can mimic the transformation on these contaminants in environment. It is expected that in the future, the accurate-mass full-spectra of transformation products recorded by HRMS will be the basic information needed to elucidate the transformation pathways of emerging halogenated contaminants in aquatic environment.

Ensuring the authenticity of honey remains a top issue for scientists, since no reliable method has been developed so far to simultaneously detect all types of honey adulteration. Consequently, the development of simple, fast, accurate and accessible analytical tools that may provide complementary data for assessing the honey authenticity, is encouraged. In this work a complete investigation in terms of general physicochemical properties (water content, °Brix, electrical conductivity, free acidity, pH and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content), major sugar composition (fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose) and δ13C signature of honeys from beekeepers and commercial honeys of different botanical origin (acacia, polyfloral, honeydew, sunflower, rape and linden) and various industrial syrup adulterants was performed. The aim was to generate reliable information in the process of honey evaluation linked with compliance or not with the quality standards, detecting additions of C4 plants sugar syrups (e.g. cane and corn) and confirming the botanical origin. Multivariate statistical methods, such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied as exploratory methods in order to examine the possible grouping of samples according to their quality. Correlations between the analyzed parameters were also performed. Stable carbon isotope ratio analysis (SCIRA) based on achieving the differences between the δ13C values in honey and its extracted protein fraction, allows to estimate the degree of adulteration of honeys with sugar syrups produced from C4 plant sources (corn and cane), while the general physicochemical parameters, major sugar composition and HMF content represents important tracers for honey quality control appreciation. Present results showed that parameters like δ13C values of protein extracted from honey, glucose content, ratio between fructose and glucose, and electrical conductivity were significantly different, depending on the botanical origin of honeys.

Assessing the authenticity of honey is a serious problem that has gained much interest internationally because honey has frequently been subject to various fraudulent practices, including mislabelling of botanical and geographical origin and mixing with sugar syrups or honey of lower quality. To protect the health of consumers and avoid competition, which could create an unstable market, consumers, beekeepers and regulatory bodies are interested in having reliable analytical methodologies to detect non-compliant honey. This paper gives an overview of the different approaches used to assess the authenticity of honey, specifically by the application of advanced instrumental techniques, including spectrometric, spectroscopic and chromatographic methods coupled with chemometric interpretation of the data. Recent development in honey analysis and application of the honey authentication process in the Romanian context are highlighted, and future trends in the process of detecting and eliminating fraudulent practices in honey production are discussed.

Characterization of acacia, sunflower, rape, linden, and polyfloral Romanian honey was performed by high performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and physicochemical analysis for classification by floral origin and to assess quality and storage conditions. The pH, electrical conductivity, moisture content, total solids, fructose/glucose ratio, 1H and 13C NMR spectra, and 5-(hydroximethyl)-2-furaldehyde were measured in reference samples and in commercial honey of unknown floral origin. Polyfloral, sunflower, and linden varieties showed high electrical conductivity values between 400 and 550 µS/cm, whereas acacia and polyfloral honeys had high fructose/glucose ratios and total solids. Commercial samples of unknown floral origin were of lower quality, as half contained 5-(hydroximethyl)-2-furaldehyde concentrations between 15 and 130 mg/kg.
