2. Wide band spectroscopic response of monocrystallines to low dose neutron and gamma radiation

Abstract

We identify a number of crystalline structures with promising characteristics to serve as a detection medium for a novel Dark Matter (DM) detector with a low threshold energy. A detector of this kind can be specifically useful in application requiring the detection of nuclear recoils, such as in direct detection of low mass DM, coherent neutrino scattering and neutrons. We describe a broad band, high sensitivity optical setup designed and constructed for the purpose of this search and future investigations of specific crystals. We report on the fluorescent signals produced from exposure to low doses of neutrons and $\gamma$ rays and find potential targets in Quartz, Sapphire, LiF, CaF$_{2}$ and BaF$_{2}$. These crystals and specific signals will be the subject of further study to establish the various traits relevant for a full scale DM detector. In this paper we identify the most interesting signals that will be promoted to significantly more detailed studies, including their production mechanism.

Abstract

The Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF) is under construction in the Soreq Nuclear Research Center at Yavne, Israel. When completed at the beginning of the next decade, SARAF will be a user facility for basic and applied nuclear physics, based on a 40 MeV, 5 mA CW proton/deuteron superconducting linear accelerator. Phase I of SARAF (SARAF-I, 4 MeV, 2 mA CW protons, 5 MeV 1 mA CW deuterons) is already in operation, generating scientific results in several fields of interest. The main ongoing program at SARAF-I is the production of 30 keV neutrons and measurement of Maxwellian Averaged Cross Sections (MACS), important for the astrophysical s-process. The world leading Maxwellian epithermal neutron yield at SARAF-I ($5\times 10^{10}$ epithermal neutrons/sec), generated by a novel Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT), enables improved precision of known MACSs, and new measurements of low-abundance and radioactive isotopes. Research plans for SARAF-II span several disciplines: Precision studies of beyond-Standard-Model effects by trapping light exotic radioisotopes, such as $^6$He, $^8$Li and $^{18,19,23}$Ne, in unprecedented amounts (including meaningful studies already at SARAF-I); extended nuclear astrophysics research with higher energy neutrons, including generation and studies of exotic neutron-rich isotopes relevant to the rapid (r-) process; nuclear structure of exotic isotopes; high energy neutron cross sections for basic nuclear physics and material science research, including neutron induced radiation damage; neutron based imaging and therapy; and novel radiopharmaceuticals development and production. Abstract

An experimental investigation into the possibility of dose-rate effects and wall scatter in the thermoluminescent response of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) was carried out. The investigation was motivated by theoretical simulations predicting the possible presence of dose-rate effects coupled with the lack of detailed experimental studies. The dose rate was varied by changing the source to sample distance, by the use of attenuators, sources of 137Cs of various activities, filtration and the construction of identical geometrical irradiators of Teflon and stainless steel. Four levels of dose in the linear dose response region were studied at 10−2 Gy, 1.5 × 10−2 Gy, 0.1 Gy and 0.5 Gy to avoid complications in interpretation due to supralinearity above 1 Gy. At the dose of 1.5 × 10−2 Gy, the dose rate was varied by five orders of magnitude from 4.9 × 10−3 Gy s−1 to 4.9 × 10−8 Gy s−1. At the other levels of dose, a one to two orders of magnitude in dose rate was achieved. Within the measurement uncertainty of 5–10%, no dose-rate effects were observed in any of the experimental measurements and no changes in the shape of the glow curve were observed. The maximum wall scatter effect (Teflon to stainless steel) was measured at ~8% within the experimental uncertainty and well below expectations. Abstract

Beam halo and growth of beam emittance are important issues for high-intensity linear accelerators. Beam-dynamic predictions of weak beam tails are usually not reliable due to complexity of the non-linear effects leading to halo formation. Therefore, development of a simple method for beam halo diagnostics is highly desirable. The first testing of CR-39 solid-state nuclear track dosimeters for beam halo measurement were performed at the SARAF phase I accelerator with a few MeV proton beams. Beam pulses of 90 nA peak intensity of shortest possible duration (15 ns) were used for direct irradiation of standard CR-39 personal dosimetry tags. Other irradiations were done with beam pulses of 200 ns duration and of 1 mA peak intensity. Specially prepared large area CR-39 plates with central hole for the beam core transport were used in these tests. Weak beam structures were clearly observed in the both types of irradiation. The tests showed feasibility of beam halo measurements down to resolution level of a single proton. The optimum CR-39 etching conditions were established. Abstract

SARAF (Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility) is based on a 5 mA, 40 MeV, proton/deuteron accelerator. Phase-I, operational since 2010, provides proton and deuteron beams up to 4 and 5 MeV, respectively, for basic and applied research activities. The high power Liquid-Lithium jet Target (LiLiT), with 1.912 MeV proton beam, provides high flux quasi-Maxwellian neutrons at kT ~30 keV (about 2 × 1010 n/s/cm2/mA on the irradiated sample, about 1 cm from the target), enabling studies of s-process reactions relevant to nucleo-synthesis of the heavy elements in giant AGB stars. With higher energy proton beams and with deuterons, LiLiT can provide higher fluxes of high energy neutrons up to 20 MeV. The experimental program with SARAF phase-I will be enhanced shortly with a new target room complex which is under construction. Finally, SARAF phase-II, planned to start operation at ~2023, will enable full capabilities with proton/ deuteron beams at 5 mA and 40 MeV. Liquid lithium targets will then be used to produce neutron sources with intensities of 1015 n/s, which after thermalization will provide thermal neutron (25 meV) fluxes of about 1012 n/s/cm2 at the entrance to neutron beam lines to diffraction and radiography stations. Abstract

The literature describing the experimental investigations of possible dose-rate effects in the thermoluminescence (TL) of LiF: Mg,Ti (Harshaw) is reviewed. The total lack of glow curve analysis, coupled with inclusion of all or part of the high temperature TL and absence of parallel measurements of possible dose-rate effects in the irradiation stage severely limit the scientific and technical level of the experiments. In addition, the experimental procedures are far from sufficient to warrant any conclusion concerning the presence or absence of dose-rate effects in the TL of LiF:Mg,Ti. This decision is contrary to the widely held belief that there are no dose-rate effects in the TL of LiF:Mg,Ti. In addition, the literature on dose-rate effects in the optical absorption (irradiation stage) of LiF is reviewed and is found contradictory. No dose-rate studies have been carried out on optical absorption in LiF:Mg,Ti. Kinetic simulations demonstrating the possibility, even likelihood, of dose-rate effects are also reviewed. Dose-rate effects are shown to be likely due to competition between excitation and recombination in the irradiation stage. Some other possible mechanisms involving multiple charge carrier trapping are suggested. Further definitive experiments are sorely needed, but the interested researcher should beware, it is not an easy task. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
