Introducción: La periodontitis es la enfermedad crónica inflamatoria caracterizada por la pérdida de inserción con reabsorción ósea concomitante y surcos profundizados por migración apical del epitelio de unión. En su patogenia pueden participar los virus; agentes infecciosos únicos en biología, entre ellos el SARS-CoV-2 causante de la COVID-19. Los investigadores han planteado teorías que tratan de explicar la posible asociación de este virus con la periodontitis, al considerar que existe entre ambas una relación bidireccional. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre este tema de enero de 2021 a mayo de 2023, con el uso del Google Académico, las bases de datos PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE y LILACS. Objetivo: Describir la información disponible sobre la asociación entre la periodontitis y la COVID-19. Desarrollo: En la periodontitis la deficiente higiene bucal produce una disbiosis del microbioma oral que desencadena la aparición de periodontopatógenos; la entrada del SARS-CoV-2 puede subvertir el sistema inmune, lo que provoca asociación grave de las enfermedades periodontales con la COVID-19. El virus puede interactuar con el microbioma oral y provocar crecimiento excesivo de patobiontes que agravan la formación de bolsas periodontales. Conclusiones: Se considera que la asociación entre la enfermedad producida por el SARS-CoV-2 con la periodontitis es bidireccional, el efecto del virus en el sistema inmunológico puede agravar la periodontitis y los efectos de mediadores químicos de la periodontitis hacen más vulnerable al paciente contagiado por el SARS-CoV-2 para desarrollar una coinfección.

Introduction: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is effective in alleviating treatment-resistant depression (TRD). It has been proposed that regions within the left DLPFC that are anti-correlated with the right subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) may represent optimal individualized target sites for high-frequency left rTMS (HFL). Objective/hypothesis: This study aimed to explore the effects of low-frequency right rTMS (LFR) on left sgACC connectivity during concurrent TMS-fMRI. Methods: 34 TRD patients underwent an imaging session that included both a resting-state fMRI run (rs-fMRI0) and a run during which LFR was applied to the right DLPFC (TMS-fMRI). Participants subsequently completed four weeks of LFR treatment. The left sgACC functional connectivity was compared between the rs-fMRI0 run and TMS-fMRI run. Personalized e-fields and a region-of-interest approach were used to calculate overlap of left sgACC functional connectivity at the TMS target and to assess for a relationship with treatment effects. Results: TMS-fMRI increased left sgACC functional connectivity to parietal regions within the ventral attention network; differences were not significantly associated with clinical improvements. Personalized e-fields were not significant in predicting treatment outcomes (p = 0.18). Conclusion: This was the first study to examine left sgACC anti-correlation with the right DLPFC during an LFR rTMS protocol. In contrast to studies that targeted the left DLPFC, we did not find that higher anti-correlation was associated with clinical outcomes. Our results suggest that the antidepressant mechanism of action of LFR to the right DLPFC may be different than for HFL.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an efficacious and well-tolerated intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). A novel rTMS protocol, intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) has been recently implemented in clinical practice, and it is essential to characterize the factors associated to pain and the trajectory of pain of iTBS compared to standard rTMS protocols. Objective: We aimed to characterize the side effect profile and the pain trajectories of High-Frequency Left (HFL) and iTBS in TRD patients in the THREE-D trial. We also investigated factors associated to pain and the relationship between pain and clinical outcomes. Methods: 414 patients were randomized to either HFL or iTBS. Severity of pain was measured after every treatment. General Estimating Equation was used to investigate factors associated with pain. Latent class linear mixed model was used to investigate latent classes of pain trajectories over the course of rTMS. Results: Higher level of pain was associated with older age, higher stimulation intensity, higher anxiety, female, and non-response. The severity of pain significantly declined over the course of treatments with a steeper decrease early on in the course of the treatment in both protocols, and four latent pain trajectories were identified. The less favorable pain trajectories were associated with non-response and higher stimulation intensity. Conclusions: HFL and iTBS were associated with similar factors and pain trajectories, although iTBS was more uncomfortable. Response to rTMS was associated with less pain and more favorable pain trajectories furthering the evince base of overlapping neurobiological underpinnings of mood and pain. We translated these results into patient-oriented information to aid in the decision-making process when considering rTMS.

Immune checkpoint therapies (ICT) are promising for treating various cancers, but response rates vary. Here the authors show, in mouse models, that tumor-infiltrating mast cells colocalize with regulatory T cells, coincide with local reduction of MHC-I and CD8 T cells, and is associated with resistance to ICT, which can be reversed by c-kit inhibitor treatment.

This essay explores fertility’s impact on economics and the gendered relations of power among humans in patriarchy. By definition, patriarchs rule through fertility—their status depends upon the exclusion of women from policymaking by means of childbearing. When forced to bear and rear early, women receive limited education and have neither skills nor time to object. The availability of birth control and abortion transforms this situation. This essay argues that anti-reproductive-choice arguments based on the premise that an unborn potential child has received an individual “gift of life” which it is the mother's duty to host occlude the way that the arrival at maturity of human lives depends on the ongoing gift of parents’ (principally mothers’) time and energy. When this “gift” is coerced, it blocks the innovative participation and skills development of huge portions of the population.

Fentanyl is a potent opioid used clinically as a pain medication and anesthetic but has recently seen a sharp rise as an illicit street drug. The potency of fentanyl means mucous membrane exposure to a small amount of the drug can expose first responders, including working canines, to accidental overdose. Naloxone, a fast-acting opioid antagonist administered intranasally (IN) or intramuscularly (IM) is currently carried by emergency personnel in the case of accidental exposure in both humans and canines. Despite the fact that law enforcement relies heavily on the olfactory abilities of canine officers, the effects of fentanyl exposure and subsequent reversal by naloxone on the olfactory performance of canines are unknown. In a block-randomized, crossover trial, we tested the effects of IN and IM naloxone on the abilities of working dogs to recognize the odor of Universal Detection Calibrant (UDC) prior to, and two, 24, and 48 h after intravenous fentanyl sedation and naloxone reversal. No detectable influence of fentanyl sedation and naloxone reversal on the dogs’ olfactory abilities was detected. We also found no difference in olfactory abilities when dogs received IN or IM naloxone. Together, results suggest no evidence that exposure to intravenous fentanyl followed by naloxone reversal impairs canine olfactory ability under these conditions.

When Caenorhabditis elegans encounters an unfavourable stimulus at its anterior, it responds by initiating an avoidance response, namely reversal of locomotion. The amphid neurons, ASHL and ASHR, are polymodal in function, with roles in the avoidance responses to high osmolarity, nose touch, and both volatile and non-volatile repellents. The mechanisms that underlie the ability of the ASH neurons to respond to such a wide range of stimuli are still unclear. We demonstrate that the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP(3)R), encoded by itr-1, functions in the reversal responses to nose touch and benzaldehyde, but not in other known ASH-mediated responses. We show that phospholipase Cbeta (EGL-8) and phospholipase Cgamma (PLC-3), which catalyse the production of IP(3), both function upstream of ITR-1 in the response to nose touch. We use neuron-specific gene rescue and neuron-specific disruption of protein function to show that the site of ITR-1 function is the ASH neurons. By rescuing plc-3 and egl-8 in a neuron-specific manner, we show that both are acting in ASH. Imaging of nose touch-induced Ca(2+) transients in ASH confirms these conclusions. In contrast, the response to benzaldehyde is independent of PLC function. Thus, we have identified distinct roles for the IP(3)R in two specific responses mediated by ASH.
