We examine the relationship between three approaches (Hadamard, DeWitt-Schwinger and adiabatic) to the renormalization of expectation values of field operators acting on a charged quantum scalar field. First, we demonstrate that the DeWitt-Schwinger representation of the Feynman Green's function is a particular case of the Hadamard representation. Next, we restrict attention to a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe with time-dependent, purely electric, background electromagnetic field, considering two, three and four-dimensional space-times. Working to the order required for the renormalization of the stress-energy tensor (SET), we find the adiabatic and DeWitt-Schwinger expansions of the Green's function when the space-time points are spatially separated. In two and four dimensions, the resulting DeWitt-Schwinger and adiabatic expansions are identical. In three dimensions, the DeWitt-Schwinger expansion contains terms of adiabatic order four which are not necessary for the renormalization of the SET and hence absent in the adiabatic expansion. The equivalence of the DeWitt-Schwinger and adiabatic approaches to renormalization in the scenario considered is thereby demonstrated up to well-known renormalization ambiguities in three space-time dimensions., 22 pages, no figures

We study a quantum scalar field, with general mass and coupling to the scalar curvature, propagating on three-dimensional global anti-de Sitter space-time. We determine the vacuum and thermal expectation values of the square of the field, also known as the vacuum polarisation (VP). We consider values of the scalar field mass and coupling for which there is a choice of boundary conditions giving well-posed classical dynamics. We apply Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin (mixed) boundary conditions to the field at the space-time boundary. We find finite values of the VP when the parameter governing the Robin boundary conditions is below a certain critical value. For all couplings, the vacuum expectation values of the VP with either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions are constant and respect the maximal symmetry of the background space-time. However, this is not the case for Robin boundary conditions, when both the vacuum and thermal expectation values depend on the space-time location. At the space-time boundary, we find that both the vacuum and thermal expectation values of the VP with Robin boundary conditions converge to the result when Neumann boundary conditions are applied, except in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions., 23 pages, 10 figures

We study the canonical quantization of a massless charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole background. Our aim is to construct analogues of the standard Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking quantum states which can be defined for a neutral scalar field, and to explore their physical properties by computing differences in expectation values of the scalar field condensate, current and stress-energy tensor operators between two quantum states. Each of these three states has a non-time-reversal-invariant ``past'' and ``future'' charged field generalization, whose properties are similar to those of the corresponding ``past'' and ``future'' states for a neutral scalar field on a Kerr black hole. In addition, we present some tentative, time-reversal-invariant, equilibrium states. The first is a ``Boulware''-like state which is as empty as possible at both future and past null infinity. Second, we posit a ``Hartle-Hawking''-like state which may correspond to a thermal distribution of particles. Here, we study a quantum fermion field in rigid rotation at finite temperature on anti-de Sitter space. We assume that the rotation rate $\Omega$ is smaller than the inverse radius of curvature $\ell ^{-1}$, so that there is no speed of light surface and the static (maximally-symmetric) and rotating vacua coincide. This assumption enables us to follow a geometric approach employing a closed-form expression for the vacuum two-point function, which can then be used to compute thermal expectation values (t.e.v.s). In the high temperature regime, we find a perfect analogy with known results on Minkowski space-time, uncovering curvature effects in the form of extra terms involving the Ricci scalar $R$. The axial vortical effect is validated and the axial flux through two-dimensional slices is found to escape to infinity for massless fermions, while for massive fermions, it is completely converted into the pseudoscalar density $-i {\bar \psi} \gamma^5 \psi$. Finally, we discuss volumetric properties such as the total scalar condensate and the total energy within the space-time and show that they diverge as $[1 - \ell^2 \Omega^2]^{-1}$ in the limit $\Omega \rightarrow \ell ^{-1}$., Comment: 54 pages, 10 figures

We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. Mixed (Robin) boundary conditions are applied on the spacetime boundary. We consider black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology as well as spherical event horizons. The quantum scalar field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, and we employ Euclidean methods to calculate the renormalized expectation values. We discuss the construction and properties of rigidly rotating states for free scalar and fermion fields in quantum field theory. On unbounded Minkowski space-time, we explain why such states do not exist for scalars. For the Dirac field, we are able to construct rotating vacuum and thermal states, for which expectation values can be computed exactly in the massless case. We compare these quantum expectation values with the corresponding quantities derived in relativistic kinetic theory.

We compute the vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on the covering space of global, four-dimensional, anti-de Sitter space-time. Since anti-de Sitter space is not globally hyperbolic, boundary conditions must be applied to the scalar field. We consider general Robin (mixed) boundary conditions for which the classical evolution of the field is well-defined and stable. The vacuum expectation value of the square of the field is not constant unless either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions are applied. We also compute the thermal expectation value of the square of the field. For Dirichlet boundary conditions, both thermal and vacuum expectation values approach the same well-known limit on the space-time boundary conditions. BACKGROUND Socioeconomic status has been associated with inferior outcomes after multiple surgical procedures, but has not been well studied with respect to pediatric liver transplantation. This study evaluated the impact of insurance status (as a proxy for socioeconomic status) on patient and allograft survival in pediatric first-time liver transplant recipients. METHODS Our retrospective analysis of the UNOS data base from January 2002 through September 2017 revealed 6997 pediatric patients undergoing first-time isolated liver transplantation. We investigate the phase space of topological black hole solutions of su(N) Einstein–Yang–Mills theory in anti-de Sitter space with a purely magnetic gauge potential. The gauge field is described by N−1 magnetic gauge field functions ωj, j=1,…,N−1. For su(2) gauge group, the function ω1 has no zeros. This is no longer the case when we consider a larger gauge group. The phase space of topological black holes is considerably simpler than for the corresponding spherically symmetric black holes, but for N>2 and a flat event horizon, there exist solutions where at least one of the ωj functions has one or more zeros. For most of the solutions, all the ωj functions have no zeros, and at least some of these are linearly stable.

The Hadamard parametrix is a representation of the short-distance singularity structure of the Feynman Green’s function for a quantum field on a curved spacetime background. Subtracting these divergent terms regularizes the Feynman Green’s function and enables the computation of renormalized expectation values of observables. We study the Hadamard parametrix for a charged, massive, complex scalar field in five spacetime dimensions. Even in Minkowski spacetime, it is not possible to write the Feynman Green’s function for a charged scalar field exactly in closed form. We, therefore, present covariant Taylor series expansions for the biscalars arising in the Hadamard parametrix. On a general spacetime background, we explicitly state the expansion coefficients up to the order required for the computation of the renormalized scalar field current. These coefficients become increasingly lengthy as the order of the expansion increases, so we give the higher-order terms required for the calculation of the renormalized stress-energy tensor in Minkowski spacetime only.

The Hadamard representation of the Green's function of a quantum field on a curved space-time is a powerful tool for computations of renormalized expectation values. We study the Hadamard form of the Feynman Green's function for a massive charged complex scalar field in an arbitrary number of space-time dimensions. Explicit expressions for the coefficients in the Hadamard parametrix are given for two, three and four space-time dimensions. We then develop the formalism for the Hadamard renormalization of the expectation values of the scalar field condensate, current and stress-energy tensor. We study vacuum and thermal expectation values of quantum scalar and Dirac fermion fields on anti-de Sitter space-time. Anti-de Sitter space-time is maximally symmetric and this enables expressions for the scalar and fermion vacuum Feynman Green's functions to be derived in closed form. We employ Hadamard renormalization to find the vacuum expectation values. The thermal Feynman Green's functions are constructed from the vacuum Feynman Green's functions using the imaginary time periodicity/anti-periodicity property for scalars/fermions. Focussing on massless fields with either conformal or minimal coupling to the space-time curvature (these two cases being the same for fermions) we compute the differences between the thermal and vacuum expectation values. According to the no-hair conjecture, equilibrium black holes are simple objects, completely determined by global charges which can be measured at infinity. This is the case in Einstein-Maxwell theory due to beautiful uniqueness theorems. However, the no-hair conjecture is not true in general, and there is now a plethora of matter models possessing hairy black hole solutions. In this note we focus on one such matter model: Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory, and restrict our attention to four-dimensional, static, non-rotating black holes for simplicity. We outline some of the menagerie of EYM solutions in both asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We attempt to make sense of this black hole zoo in terms of Bizon’s modified no-hair conjecture.

A complex scalar field on a charged black hole in a cavity is known to experience a superradiant instability. We investigate possible final states of this instability. We find hairy black hole solutions of a fully coupled system of Einstein gravity and a charged scalar field. The black holes are surrounded by a reflecting mirror. We also investigate the stability of these black holes.

We investigate possible end-points of the superradiant instability for a charged black hole with a reflecting mirror. By considering a fully coupled system of gravity and a charged scalar field, hairy black hole solutions are obtained. We study the energy density and pressure of a relativistic thermal gas of massless fermions on four-dimensional Minkowski and anti-de Sitter space-times using relativistic kinetic theory. The corresponding quantum field theory quantities are given by components of the renormalized expectation value of the stress-energy tensor operator acting on a thermal state. On Minkowski space-time, the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor is by definition zero, while on anti-de Sitter space-time the vacuum contribution to this expectation value is in general nonzero. We present new planar dyonic black hole solutions of the s u N $$ \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(N) $$ Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time, focussing on s u 2 $$ \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(2) $$ and s u 3 $$ \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(3) $$ gauge groups. The magnetic part of the gauge field forms a condensate close to the planar event horizon. We compare the free energy of a non-Abelian hairy black hole with that of an embedded Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole having the same Hawking temperature and electric charge. We find that the hairy black holes have lower free energy. We present evidence that there is a phase transition at a critical temperature, above which the only solutions are embedded RN-AdS black holes. At the critical temperature, an RN-AdS black hole can decay into a hairy black hole, and it is thermodynamically favourable to do so. Working in the probe limit, we compute the frequency-dependent conductivity, and find that enlarging the gauge group from s u 2 $$ \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(2) $$ to s u 3 $$ \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(3) $$ eliminates a divergence in the conductivity at nonzero frequency.

We present new soliton and hairy black hole solutions of Einstein-non-Abelian-Proca theory in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time with gauge group ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$. For static, spherically symmetric configurations, we show that the gauge field must be purely magnetic, and solve the resulting field equations numerically. The equilibrium gauge field is described by a single function $\omega (r)$, which must have at least one zero. The solitons and hairy black holes share many properties with the corresponding solutions in asymptotically flat space-time. We present new regular solutions of Einstein-charged scalar field theory in a cavity. The system is enclosed inside a reflecting mirror-like boundary, on which the scalar field vanishes. The mirror is placed at the zero of the scalar field closest to the origin, and inside this boundary our solutions are regular. We study the stability of these solitons under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations of the metric, scalar and electromagnetic fields. If the radius of the mirror is sufficiently large, we present numerical evidence for the stability of the solitons. For small mirror radius, some of the solitons are unstable. We present new spherically symmetric, dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of the ${\mathfrak {su}}(N)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time. The gauge field has nontrivial electric and magnetic components and is described by $N-1$ magnetic gauge field functions and $N-1$ electric gauge field functions. We explore the phase space of solutions in detail for ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$ and ${\mathfrak {su}}(3)$ gauge groups. Combinations of the electric gauge field functions are monotonic and have no zeros; in general the magnetic gauge field functions may have zeros. The phase space of solutions is extremely rich, and we find solutions in which the magnetic gauge field functions have more than fifty zeros. Of particular interest are solutions for which the magnetic gauge field functions have no zeros, which exist when the negative cosmological constant has sufficiently large magnitude. We conjecture that at least some of these nodeless solutions may be stable under linear, spherically symmetric, perturbations.

We investigate the stability of spherically symmetric, purely magnetic, soliton and black hole solutions of four-dimensional ${\mathfrak {su}}(N)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant $\Lambda $. These solutions are described by $N-1$ magnetic gauge field functions $\omega _{j}$. We consider linear, spherically symmetric, perturbations of these solutions. The perturbations decouple into two sectors, known as the sphaleronic and gravitational sectors. For any $N$, there are no instabilities in the sphaleronic sector if all the magnetic gauge field functions $\omega _{j}$ have no zeros, and satisfy a set of $N-1$ inequalities. We investigate quantum effects on topological black hole space-times within the framework of quantum field theory on curved space-times. Considering a quantum scalar field, we extend a recent mode-sum regularization prescription for the computation of the renormalized vacuum polarization to asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology. Recent works have included the effect of rotation on simulations of black hole events at the LHC, showing that the angular momentum of the black hole cannot be ignored and it makes a non-trivial contribution for most of the lifetime of the black hole. A key consequence of the rotation of the black hole is that the Hawking radiation is no longer isotropic, making it more difficult to infer space-time parameters from measurements of the emitted particles. In this letter we study the angular distribution of the Hawking emission of non-zero spin particles with specific helicity on the brane. One possible feature of quantum gravity may be the violation of Lorentz invariance. In this paper we consider one particular manifestation of the violation of Lorentz invariance, namely modified dispersion relations for massive neutrinos. We show how such modified dispersion relations may affect atmospheric neutrino oscillations. We construct the Feynman propagator for Dirac fermions on anti-de Sitter space-time and present an analytic expression for the bi-spinor of parallel transport. We then renormalise the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor and end by analysing its renormalised expectation value at finite temperatures.

We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a massless, conformally coupled, quantum scalar field on the brane of a higher-dimensional black hole. Working in the AADD brane-world scenario, the extra dimensions are flat and we assume that the compactification radius is large compared with the size of the black hole. The four-dimensional on-brane metric corresponds to a slice through a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole geometry and depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions. The quantum scalar field is in a thermal state at the Hawking temperature. Can a black hole that suffers a superradiant instability evolve towards a 'hairy' configuration which is stable? We address this question in the context of Einstein-charged scalar field theory. First, we describe a family of static black hole solutions which possess charged scalar-field hair confined within a mirror-like boundary. Next, we derive a set of equations which govern the linear, spherically symmetric perturbations of these hairy solutions. We present numerical evidence which suggests that, unlike the vacuum solutions, the (single-node) hairy solutions are stable under linear perturbations. We consider the definition of the global vacuum state of a quantum scalar field on $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time as seen by an observer rotating about the polar axis. Since positive (or negative) frequency scalar field modes must have positive (or negative) Klein-Gordon norm respectively, we find that the only sensible choice of positive frequency corresponds to positive frequency as seen by a static observer. This means that the global rotating vacuum is identical to the global nonrotating vacuum. We study rotating thermal states of a massless quantum fermion field inside a cylinder in Minkowski space-time. Two possible boundary conditions for the fermion field on the cylinder are considered: the spectral and MIT bag boundary conditions. If the radius of the cylinder is sufficiently small, rotating thermal expectation values are finite everywhere inside the cylinder. We also study the Casimir divergences on the boundary. The rotating thermal expectation values and the Casimir divergences have different properties depending on the boundary conditions applied at the cylinder. We consider a massless quantum scalar field on a two-dimensional space-time describing a thin shell of matter collapsing to form a Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole. At early times, before the shell starts to collapse, the quantum field is in the vacuum state, corresponding to the Boulware vacuum on an eternal black hole space-time. The scalar field satisfies reflecting boundary conditions on the anti-de Sitter boundary. We study a quantum fermion field inside a cylinder in Minkowski space-time. On the surface of the cylinder, the fermion field satisfies either spectral or MIT bag boundary conditions. We define rigidly-rotating quantum states in both cases, assuming that the radius of the cylinder is sufficiently small that the speed-of-light surface is excluded from the space-time. With this assumption, we calculate rigidly-rotating thermal expectation values of the fermion condensate, neutrino charge current and stress-energy tensor relative to the bounded vacuum state. These rigidly-rotating thermal expectation values are finite everywhere inside and on the surface of the cylinder and their detailed properties depend on the choice of boundary conditions. We also compute the Casimir divergence of the expectation values of these quantities in the bounded vacuum state relative to the unbounded Minkowski vacuum. The Einstein-conformally coupled scalar field system is studied in the presence of a cosmological constant. We consider a massless or massive scalar field with no additional self-interaction, and spherically symmetric black hole geometries. When the cosmological constant is positive, no scalar hair can exist and the only solution is the Schwarzschild–de Sitter black hole. When the cosmological constant is negative, stable scalar field hair exists provided the mass of the scalar field is not too large.

Making use of the symmetries of anti-de Sitter space-time, we derive an analytic expression for the bispinor of parallel transport, from which we construct in closed form the vacuum Feynman Green's function of the Dirac field on this background. We review the quantum field theory description of Hawking radiation from evaporating black holes and summarize what is known about Hawking radiation from black holes in more than four space-time dimensions. In the context of the Large Extra Dimensions scenario, we present the theoretical formalism for all types of emitted fields and a selection of results on the radiation spectra. A detailed analysis of the Hawking fluxes in this case is essential for modelling the evaporation of higher-dimensional black holes at the LHC, whose creation is predicted by low-energy models of quantum gravity. We discuss the status of the quest for black-hole solutions in the context of the Randall–Sundrum brane-world model and, in the absence of an exact metric, we review what is known about Hawking radiation from such black holes.

[EN] The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the Geyser technique for dark matter search. The results of the first 0.5 kg mass prototype detector using superheated C3F8 liquid were very encouraging, achieving a 5 keV nuclear recoil threshold with high insensitivity to gamma radiation. Additionally, the technique seems to be easily scalable to higher masses for both in terms of complexity and costs, resulting in a very competitive technique for direct dark matter search, especially for the spin dependent case. Here, we report as well in the construction and commissioning of the big detector of 40 kg at the Milano-Bicocca University. The detector, the calibration tests and the evaluation of the background will be presented. We revisit the definition of rotating thermal states for scalar and fermion fields in unbounded Minkowski space-time. For scalar fields such states are ill-defined everywhere, but for fermion fields an appropriate definition of the vacuum gives thermal states regular inside the speed-of-light surface. For a massless fermion field, we derive analytic expressions for the thermal expectation values of the fermion current and stress-energy tensor. These expressions may provide qualitative insights into the behaviour of thermal rotating states on more complex space-time geometries., 6 pages, 1 figure, expanded discussion and more plots included, version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B
