Collaboration between school counselors and families has increasingly been identified as a benefit to student success and well-being. This expansion of roles is reflected within school counseling standards as families and parents comprise one-third of the types of collaboration promoted by the ASCA National Model. Further, ASCA's program foundation cites the importance of families and parents in the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies. In addition to a family focus within the standards of school counseling, family well-being has been associated with overall student wellness. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide school counselors with a model of family well-being that will serve as an organizing framework to help school counselors understand and conceptualize families and their well-being. Additionally, the authors provide strategies for school counselors to implement the organizing framework into the school environment.

Rural communities face significant mental health disparities. Two universities developed a training model for rural school‐based counseling students, which began with a rural life orientation. This case study's findings demonstrate the value of place‐attentive pedagogy and experiential learning. This exploratory study examined the impact of three process groups for first-year, first-semester master's degree students (N = 20, total). The Group Environment Scale (GES; Moos 1994, 2002), Forms I (Ideal) and R (Real), were utilized to measure the participants' ideal perceptions and real perceptions of the small group environment. The overall results show that cohesion, leader support, task orientation, order/organization, and leader control were critical aspects of the experience. A group facilitator impact was found when comparing the results from the three different groups. Implications for group work training and future research are presented.

This article provides a rationale for using adventure-based counseling (ABC) principles to promote children's self-esteem through group work within the school setting. The effectiveness of combining Adlerian theory with ABC to promote self-esteem is established. The process that would allow a school counselor to plan, organize, facilitate, and evaluate this group successfully is emphasized. Previous literature (Wick, Wick, & Peterson, 1997) conceptualized the efficacy of combining Adlerian theory with ABC based interventions in school. This article expands upon this idea to rationalize the heightened need for this type of intervention in an era of increased interaction through technology and decreased opportunities for developmental social learning. Discussion includes recruiting counselees, forming objectives and intended outcomes, and designing a program within the school. This article includes a selection of activities and initiatives and suggested evaluative measures.

This study examined the effect of the calcium channel blocker ruthenium red (RR) on developmental programmed cell death (PCD) and perforation formation in leaves of the aquatic lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis (Mirbel) H. Bruggen). Plant immersion experiments were conducted using various concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 µmol*[L.sup.-1]) of RR applied to whole plants over a 3 to 4 week period. The ratio of number of leaf perforations per centimeter of leaf length along with leaf length were used to assess treatment effect. While the ratio of number of perforations per centimetre of leaf length was significantly reduced with RR treatment, leaf length was not, overall, significantly affected by RR. Therefore, it was concluded that RR was able to inhibit calcium movement and halt PCD, thus reducing perforation formation without having detrimental effects on leaf growth. The present research provides indirect evidence of the possible role of calcium in developmental PCD in vivo during leaf morphogenesis in the lace plant. Furthermore, it suggests the usefulness of the lace plant as a model system for pharmacological studies involving developmental PCD. Ils ont conduit des experiences d'immersion en utilisant diverses concentrations (0,10, 20, 30 et 40 µmol*[L.sup.-1]) de RR appliquees sur l'ensemble de la plante, pendant une periode 3 a 4 semaines. Ils ont utilise le rapport du nombre de perforations foliaires par cm de longueur de feuille sur la longueur des feuilles pour evaluer l'effet des traitements. Alors que le rapport du nombre de perforations par cm de longueur foliaire se voit significativement reduit avec le traitement RR, la longueur de la feuille n'est pas significativement affectee par le RR. Consequemment, les auteurs concluent que le RR peut inhiber le mouvement du calcium et arreter la PCD, reduisant ainsi la formation des perforations sans exercer d'effet nefaste sur la croissance foliaire. Cette recherche fournit une preuve indirecte du role possible du calcium dans la PCD du developpement in vitro au cours de la morphogentese foliaire, chez l'A. madagascariensis. De plus, ceci suggere l'utilite de cette plante comme systeme modele pour les etudes pharmacologiques impliquant la PCD du developpement.
