Ultracold atomic gases hold unique promise for space science by capitalizing on quantum advantages and extended freefall, afforded in a microgravity environment, to enable next-generation precision sensors. Atom interferometers are a class of quantum sensors which can use freely falling gases of atoms cooled to sub-photon-recoil temperatures to provide unprecedented sensitivities to accelerations, rotations, and gravitational forces, and are currently being developed for space-based applications in gravitational, earth, and planetary sciences, as well as to search for subtle forces that could signify physics beyond General Relativity and the Standard Model. NASA's Cold Atom Lab (CAL) operates onboard the International Space Station as a multi-user facility for studies of ultracold atoms and to mature quantum technologies, including atom interferometry, in persistent microgravity. In this paper, we report on path-finding experiments utilizing ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms in the CAL atom interferometer, which was enabled by an on-orbit upgrade of the CAL science module: A three-pulse Mach-Zehnder interferometer was studied to understand limitations from the influence of ISS vibrations. Additionally, Ramsey shear-wave interferometry was used to manifest interference patterns in a single run that were observable for over 150 ms free-expansion time. Finally, the CAL atom interferometer was used to remotely measure the photon recoil from the atom interferometer laser as a demonstration of the first quantum sensor using matter-wave interferometry in space., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The capability to reach ultracold atomic temperatures in compact instruments has recently been extended into space. Ultracold temperatures amplify quantum effects, while free-fall allows further cooling and longer interactions time with gravity - the final force without a quantum description. On Earth, these devices have produced macroscopic quantum phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BECs), superfluidity, and strongly interacting quantum gases. Quantum sensors interfering the superposition of two ultracold atomic isotopes have tested the Universality of Free Fall (UFF), a core tenet of Einstein's classical gravitational theory, at the $10^{-12}$ level. In space, cooling the elements needed to explore the rich physics of strong interactions and preparing the multiple species required for quantum tests of the UFF has remained elusive. Here, utilizing upgraded capabilities of the multi-user Cold Atom Lab (CAL) instrument within the International Space Station (ISS), we report the first simultaneous production of a dual species Bose-Einstein condensate in space (formed from $^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K), observation of interspecies interactions, as well as the production of $^{39}$K ultracold gases. We have further achieved the first space-borne demonstration of simultaneous atom interferometry with two atomic species ($^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K). These results are an important step towards quantum tests of UFF in space, and will allow scientists to investigate aspects of few-body physics, quantum chemistry, and fundamental physics in novel regimes without the perturbing asymmetry of gravity.

The Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) is a quantum facility for studying ultra-cold gases in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. It enables research in a temperature regime and force-free environment inaccessible to terrestrial laboratories. In the microgravity environment, observation times over a few seconds and temperatures below 100 pK are achievable, unlocking the potential to observe new quantum phenomena. CAL launched to the International Space Station in May 2018 and has been operating since then as the world's first multi-user facility for studying ultra\-cold atoms in space. CAL is the first quantum science facility to produce the fifth state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate with rubidium-87 and potassium-41 in Earth orbit. We will give an overview of CAL's operational setup, outline its contributions to date, present planned upgrades for the next few years, and consider design choices for microgravity BEC successor-mission planning., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. The study of molecular physics using ultracold gases has provided a unique probe into the fundamental properties of nature and offers new tools for quantum technologies. In this article we outline how the use of a space environment to study ultracold molecular physics opens opportunities for 1) exploring ultra-low energy regimes of molecular physics with high efficiency, 2) providing a toolbox of capabilities for fundamental physics, and 3) enabling new classes of matter-wave interferometers with applications in precision measurement for fundamental and many-body physics., Comment: 6 pages

Significant leaps in the understanding of quantum systems have been driven by the exploration of geometry, topology, dimensionality, and interactions with ultracold atomic ensembles. A system where atoms evolve while confined on an ellipsoidal surface represents a heretofore unexplored geometry and topology. Realizing such an ultracold bubble system (potentially Bose-Einstein condensed) has areas of interest including quantized-vortex flow respecting topological constraints imposed by closed surfaces, new collective modes, and self-interference via free bubble expansion. Large ultracold bubbles, created by inflating smaller condensates, directly tie into Hubble-analog expansion physics. Here, we report observations from the NASA Cold Atom Lab facility aboard the International Space Station of bubbles of ultracold atoms created using a radiofrequency-dressing protocol. We observe a variety of bubble configurations of differing sizes and initial temperature, and explore bubble thermodynamics, demonstrating significant cooling associated with inflation. Additionally, we achieve partial coverings of bubble traps greater than 1 mm in size with ultracold films of inferred few-$\mu$m thickness, and we observe the dynamics of shell structures projected into free-evolving harmonic confinement. The observations are part of the first generation of scientific measurements made with ultracold atoms in space, exploiting the benefits of perpetual free-fall to explore gravity-free evolution of quantum systems that are prohibitively difficult to create on Earth. This work points the way to experiments focused on the nature of the Bose-Einstein condensed bubble, the character of its excitations, and the role of topology in its evolution; it also ushers in an era of orbital microgravity quantum-gas physics.

The current notional architecture for the Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign would require autonomous on-orbit rendezvous and capture of a sample container after it has been delivered to Mars orbit by a preceding MSR mission. As part of the complete orbital payload known as the Capture, Contain, and Return System (CCRS), a concept has been developed for autonomously sensing and capturing this Orbiting Sample (OS) container. The concept, comprised of a capture mechanism and multiple optical break-beam arrays, would detect and enclose the OS into CCRS, and engage a dust-tight seal to prevent the escape of the OS or other unsterilized particles. A challenging goal for the system is to close the lid prior to the OS coming into physical contact after entering CCRS in order to reduce the risk of unsterilized Mars particles on the surface of the OS from contaminating the outside of the spacecraft. The mechanical and sensor performance requirements were driven by the broader architecture of CCRS, OS rendezvous parameters, and Planetary Protection requirements regarding the interaction and handling of the OS. The mechanism and break-beam array concepts were designed accordingly, and kinematic simulations of the mechanism’s behavior, combined with a Monte-Carlo simulation of OS rendezvous/collision behaviors and corresponding breakbeam sensor responses verify compliance.
