Search

Predictions for the Higgs masses are a distinctive feature of supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, where they play a crucial role in constraining the parameter space. The discovery of a Higgs boson and the remarkably precise measurement of its mass at the LHC have spurred new efforts aimed at improving the accuracy of the theoretical predictions for the Higgs masses in supersymmetric models. The "Precision SUSY Higgs Mass Calculation Initiative" (KUTS) was launched in 2014 to provide a forum for discussions between the different groups involved in these efforts. We examine scenarios in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM), where pair-produced squarks and gluinos decay via two cascades, each ending in a stable neutralino as Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) and a Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson, with mass spectra such that the missing transverse energy, $E_{T}^{\text{miss}}$, is very small. Performing two-dimensional parameter scans and focusing on the hadronic $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ decay giving a $b\bar{b}b\bar{b} + E_{T}^{\text{miss}}$ final state we explore the sensitivity of a current LHC general-purpose jets+$E_{T}^{\text{miss}}$ analysis to such scenarios., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. A comprehensive review of physics at an e+e- Linear Collider in the energy range of sqrt{s}=92 GeV--3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low energy as well as astroparticle physics.The report focuses in particular on Higgs boson, Top quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the Standard Model physics such as Supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. The most recent LHC data have provided a considerable improvement in the precision with which various Higgs production and decay channels have been measured. Using all available public results from ATLAS, CMS and the Tevatron, we derive for each final state the combined confidence level contours for the signal strengths in the (gluon fusion + ttH associated production) versus (vector boson fusion + VH associated production) space. These "combined signal strength ellipses" can be used in a simple, generic way to constrain a very wide class of New Physics models in which the couplings of the Higgs boson deviate from the Standard Model prediction. Here, we use them to constrain the reduced couplings of the Higgs boson to up-quarks, down-quarks/leptons and vector boson pairs. We also consider New Physics contributions to the loop-induced gluon-gluon and photon-photon couplings of the Higgs, as well as invisible/unseen decays. Finally, we apply our fits to some simple models with an extended Higgs sector, in particular to Two-Higgs-Doublet models of Type I and Type II, the Inert Doublet model, and the Georgi-Machacek triplet Higgs model., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures; v2: fixed important factor of 2 missing in Eq. We analyze the extent to which the LHC and Tevatron results as of the end of 2012 constrain invisible (or undetected) decays of the Higgs boson-like state at ~ 125 GeV. To this end we perform global fits for several cases: 1) a Higgs boson with Standard Model (SM) couplings but additional invisible decay modes; 2) SM couplings to fermions and vector bosons, but allowing for additional new particles modifying the effective Higgs couplings to gluons and photons; 3) no new particles in the loops but tree-level Higgs couplings to the up-quarks, down-quarks and vector bosons, relative to the SM, treated as free parameters. We find that in the three cases invisible decay rates of 23%, 61%, 88%, respectively, are consistent with current data at 95% confidence level (CL). Limiting the coupling to vector bosons, CV, to CV < 1 in case 3) reduces the allowed invisible branching ratio to 56% at 95% CL. Requiring in addition that the Higgs couplings to quarks have the same sign as in the SM, an invisible rate of up to 36% is allowed at 95% CL. Performing a fit to all publicly available data, we analyze the extent to which the latest results from the LHC and Tevatron constrain the couplings of the Higgs boson-like state at ~ 125 GeV. To this end we assume that only Standard Model (SM) particles appear in the Higgs decays, but tree-level Higgs couplings to the up-quarks, down-quarks and vector bosons, relative to the SM are free parameters. We also assume that the leptonic couplings relative to the SM are the same as for the down-quark, and a custodial symmetry for the V=W,Z couplings. In the simplest approach, the effective Higgs couplings to gluons and photons are computed in terms of the previous parameters. This approach is also applied to Two-Higgs-Doublet Models of Type I and Type II. However, we also explore the possibility that the net Higgs to gluon-gluon and gamma-gamma couplings have extra loop contributions coming from Beyond-the-Standard Model physics. We find that the SM p-value ~ 0.5 is more than 2 sigma away from fits in which: a) there is some non-SM contribution to the gamma-gamma coupling of the Higgs; or b) the sign of the top quark coupling to the Higgs is opposite that of the W coupling. In both these cases p-values ~ 0.9 can be achieved. The best fit to the Tevatron results in the bb channel and the mild excesses at CMS in the gamma-gamma channel at 136 GeV and in the tau-tau channel above 132 GeV can be explained by a second Higgs state in this mass range, in addition to the one at 125 GeV recently discovered at the LHC. We show that a scenario with two Higgs bosons at 125 GeV and 136 GeV can be consistent with practically all available signal rates, including a reduced rate in the tau-tau channel around 125 GeV as reported by CMS. An example in the parameter space of the general NMSSM is given where, moreover, the signal rates of the 125 GeV Higgs boson in the gamma-gamma channels are enhanced relative to the expectation for a SM Higgs boson of this mass., Comment: 13 pages, 4 Tables

We define benchmark models for SUSY searches at the LHC, including the CMSSM, NUHM, mGMSB, mAMSB, MM-AMSB and p19MSSM, as well as models with R-parity violation and the NMSSM. Within the parameter spaces of these models, we propose benchmark subspaces, including planes, lines and points along them. The planes may be useful for presenting results of the experimental searches in different SUSY scenarios, while the specific benchmark points may serve for more detailed detector performance tests and comparisons. A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the $B$-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies. We discuss several phenomenological aspects of the fully constrained version of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (cNMSSM). Assuming universal boundary conditions at a high energy scale for the soft supersymmetry-breaking gaugino, sfermion and Higgs masses as well as for the trilinear interactions, we find that the model can satisfy all present constraints from colliders and cosmological data on dark matter, B- and muon-physics. The phenomenologically viable region of the parameter space of the cNMSSM can be described by essentially one single parameter as the universal gaugino mass parameter M_{1/2}, and corresponds to small values for the universal scalar mass m_0. The lightest supersymmetric particle is always a singlino-like neutralino that is almost degenerate with the lightest tau slepton. We study the particle spectrum of the model and its signatures at the LHC, such as possibly long-lived tau sleptons at the end of decay chains, that would distinguish the cNMSSM from the constrained MSSM., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, references and comments added

We investigate various classes of Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking models and show that the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can solve the mu-problem in a phenomenologically acceptable way. These models include scenarios with singlet tadpole terms, which are phenomenologically viable, e.g., in the presence of a small Yukawa coupling <~ 10^{-5}. Scenarios with suppressed trilinear A-terms at the messenger scale lead naturally to light CP-odd scalars, which play the r\^ole of pseudo R-axions. A wide range of parameters of such models satisfies LEP constraints, with CP-even Higgs scalars below 114 GeV decaying dominantly into a pair of CP-odd scalars., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected, reference added

We consider the fully constrained version of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (cNMSSM) in which a singlet Higgs superfield is added to the two doublets that are present in the minimal extension (MSSM). Assuming universal boundary conditions at a high scale for the soft supersymmetry-breaking gaugino, sfermion and Higgs mass parameters as well as for the trilinear interactions, we find that the model is more constrained than the celebrated minimal supergravity model. The phenomenologically viable region in the parameter space of the cNMSSM corresponds to a small value for the universal scalar mass m_0: in this case, one single input parameter is sufficient to describe the phenomenology of the model once the available constraints from collider data and cosmology are imposed. We discuss constrained and semi--constrained versions of the next--to--minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) in which a singlet Higgs superfield is added to the two doublet superfields that are present in the minimal extension (MSSM). This leads to a richer Higgs and neutralino spectrum and allows for many interesting phenomena that are not present in the MSSM. In particular, light Higgs particles are still allowed by current constraints and could appear as decay products of the heavier Higgs states, rendering their search rather difficult at the LHC. We propose benchmark scenarios which address the new phenomenological features, consistent with present constraints from colliders and with the dark matter relic density, and with (semi--)universal soft terms at the GUT scale. We present the corresponding spectra for the Higgs particles, their couplings to gauge bosons and fermions and their most important decay branching ratios. This review presents flavour related issues in the production and decays of heavy states at LHC, both from the experimental side and from the theoretical side. We investigate an action that includes simultaneously original and dual gravitational fields (in the first order formalism), where the dual fields are completely determined in terms of the original fields through axial gauge conditions and partial (non-covariant) duality constraints. We introduce two kinds of matter, one that couples to the original metric, and dual matter that couples to the dual metric. The linear response of both metrics to the corresponding stress energy tensors coincides with Einstein's equations. We study S-duality transformations that mix the Riemann tensor with the field strength of a 3-form field. The dual of an (A)dS space time - with arbitrary curvature - is seen to be flat Minkowski space time, if the 3-form field has vanishing field strength before the duality transformation. It is discussed whether matter could couple to the dual metric, related to the Riemann tensor after a duality transformation. This possibility is supported by the facts that the Schwarzschild metric can be obtained as a suitable contraction of the dual of a Taub-NUT-AdS metric, and that metrics describing FRW cosmologies can be obtained as duals of theories with matter in the form of torsion., Comment: 26 pages, introduction rewritten, title changed, references added, to appear in Class. Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. We consider a 4+N-dimensional brane world with 2 co-dimension 1 branes in an empty bulk. The two branes have N-1 of their extra dimensions compactified on a sphere S^(N-1), whereas the ordinary 4 spacetime directions are Poincare invariant. An essential input are induced stress-energy tensors on the branes providing different tensions for the spherical and flat part of the branes. The junction conditions - notably through their extra dimensional components - fix both the distance between the branes as well as the size of the sphere. As a result, we demonstrate, that there are no scalar Kaluza-Klein states at all (massless or massive), that would correspond to a radion or a modulus field of S^(N-1). We also discuss the effect of induced Einstein terms on the branes and show that their coefficients are bounded from above, otherwise they lead to a graviton ghost., Comment: 23 pages, no figures, references added, typos corrected

We demonstrate that Higgs discovery at the LHC is possible in the context of the NMSSM even for those scenarios such that the only strongly produced Higgs boson is a very SM-like CP-even scalar which decays almost entirely to a pair of relatvely light CP-odd states. We consider a blown-up 3-brane, with the resulting geometry R^(3,1) \times S^(N-1), in an infinite-volume bulk with N > 2 extra dimensions. The action on the brane includes both an Einstein term and a cosmological constant. Similar setups have been proposed both to reproduce 4-d gravity on the brane, and to solve the cosmological constant problem. Here we obtain a singularity-free solution to Einstein's equations everywhere in the bulk and on the brane, which allows us to address these question explicitely. One finds, however, that the proper volume of S^(N-1) and the cosmological constant on the brane have to be fine-tuned relatively to each other, thus the cosmological constant problem is not solved. Moreover the scalar propagator on the brane behaves 4-dimensionally over a phenomenologically acceptable range only if the warp factor on the brane is huge, which aggravates the Weak Scale - Planck Scale hierarchy problem., Comment: 21 pages, no figures

First, we present a simple confining abelian pure gauge theory. Classically, its kinetic term is not positive definite, and it contains a simple UV regularized F^4 interaction. This provoques the formation of a condensate ~ F^2 such that, at the saddle point of the effective potential, the wave function normalization constant of the abelian gauge fields vanishes exactly. Then we study SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory in an abelian gauge and introduce an additional auxiliary field for a BRST invariant condensate of dimension 2, which renders the charged sector massive. Under simple assumptions its effective low energy theory reduces to the confining abelian model discussed before, and the vev of rho is seen to scale correctly with the renormalization point. Under these assumptions, the confinement condition Z_eff = 0 also holds for the massive charged sector, which suppresses the couplings of the charged fields to the abelian gauge bosons in the infrared regime., Comment: Explanations added, to appear in Eur. We prove the perturbative renormalisability of pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the abelian gauge supplemented with mass terms. Whereas mass terms for the gauge fields charged under the diagonal U(1) allow to preserve the standard form of the Slavnov-Taylor identities (but with modified BRST variations), mass terms for the diagonal gauge fields require the study of modified Slavnov-Taylor identities. We comment on the renormalization group equations, which describe the variation of the effective action with the different masses. Finite renormalized masses for the charged gauge fields, in the limit of vanishing bare mass terms, are possible provided a certain combination of wave function renormalization constants vanishes sufficiently rapidly in the infrared limit., Comment: added explanations, corrected signs

Gravitational S-duality is defined by the contraction of two indices of the Riemann tensor with the epsilon tensor. We review its realization in linearized gravity, and study its generalization to full non-linear gravity by means of explicit examples: Up to a rescaling of the coordinates, it relates two Taub-NUT-Schwarzschild metrics by interchanging m with l, provided both parameters are non-zero. In the presence of a cosmological constant gravitational S-duality can be implemented at the expense of the introduction of a three-form field whose value turns out to be dual to the cosmological constant., Comment: 23 pages, no figs

We scan the parameter space of the NMSSM for the observability of at least one Higgs boson at the LHC with $300\fbi$ integrated luminosity, taking the present LEP2 constraints into account. We restrict the scan to those regions of parameter space for which Higgs boson decays to other Higgs bosons and/or supersymmetric particles are kinematically forbidden. We find that if $WW$-fusion detection modes for a light Higgs boson are not taken into account, then there are still significant regions in the scanned portion of the NMSSM parameter space where no Higgs boson can be observed at the $5\sigma$ level, despite the recent improvements in ATLAS and CMS procedures and techniques and even if we combine all non-fusion discovery channels. However, if the $WW$-fusion detection modes are included using the current theoretical study estimates, then we find that for all scanned points at least one of the NMSSM Higgs bosons will be detected. If the estimated $300\fbi$ significances for ATLAS and CMS are combined, one can also achieve $5\sigma$ signals after combining just the non-$WW$-fusion channels signals. We present the parameters of several particularly difficult points, and discuss the complementary roles played by different modes. We consider models with N U(1) gauge fields A_{\mu}^n, N Kalb-Ramond fields B_{\mu \nu}^n, an arbitrary bare action and a fixed UV cutoff \Lambda. Under mild assumptions these can be obtained as effective low energy theories of SU(N+1) Yang Mills theories in the maximal abelian gauge. For a large class of bare actions they can be solved in the large N limit and exhibit confinement. The confining phase is characterized by an approximate ``low energy'' vector gauge symmetry under which the Kalb-Ramond fields B_{\mu\nu}^n transform. The same symmetry allows for a duality transformation showing that magnetic monopoles have condensed. The models allow for various mechanisms of confinement, depending on which sources for A_{\mu}^n or B_{\mu \nu}^n are switched on, but the area law for the Wilson loop is obtained in any case., Comment: corrected misprints and references

The AdS/CFT correspondence is developed from classical solutions on AdS_5 with two boundaries. The corresponding limits and the reduction of degrees of freedom are discussed, as well as the required renormalization on the field theory side. The Hamiltonian first-order approach towards the solution of coupled gravitational/matter equations of motion is introduced, and the RG interpretation is exposed. We give the upper bounds on the masses of the lightest and second lightest CP even Higgs bosons in the NMSSM, the MSSM extended by a gauge singlet. The dominant two loop corrections are included. Since the coupling R of the lightest Higgs scalar to gauge bosons can be small, we study in detail the relation between masses and couplings of both lightest scalars. We present upper bounds on the mass of a 'strongly' coupled Higgs (R>1/2) as a function of lower experimental limits on the mass of a 'weakly' coupled Higgs (R<1/2). There are many low-energy models of supersymmetry breaking parameters which are motivated by theoretical and experimental considerations. Here, we discuss some of the lesser-known theories of low-energy supersymmetry, and outline their phenomenological consequences. In some cases, these theories have more gauge symmetry or particle content than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In other cases, the parameters of the Lagrangian are unusual compared to commonly accepted norms (e.g., Wino LSP, heavy gluino LSP, light gluino, etc.). The phenomenology of supersymmetry varies greatly between the different models. Correspondingly, particular aspects of the detectors assume greater or lesser importance. The combined Einstein equations and scalar equation of motion in the Horava-Witten scenario of the strongly coupled heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold are solved in the presence of additional matter densities on the branes. We take into account the universal Calabi-Yau modulus phi with potentials in the 5-d bulk and on the 3-branes, and allow for an arbitrary coupling of the additional matter to phi and an arbitrary equation of state. No ad hoc stabilization of the five dimensional radius is assumed. The matter densities are assumed to be small compared to the potential for phi on the branes; in this approximation we find solutions in the bulk which are exact in y and t. Depending on the coupling of the matter to phi and its equation of state, various solutions for the metric on the branes and in the 5-d bulk are obtained: Solutions corresponding to a ``rolling radius'', and solutions with a static 5-d radius, which reproduce the standard cosmological evolution., Comment: 20 pages (LaTeX2e), no figs. We derive the analogue of the vanishing of the cosmological constant in 3+1 dimensions, T_0^0 = 0, in terms of an integral over components of the energy-momentum tensor of a 4+1 dimensional universe with parallel three-branes, and an additional constraint local to the branes. The basic ingredients are the existence of a static solution of the Einstein equations, and the compactness of the 5th dimension. The corresponding constraints are applied to a general action of scalar fields with arbitrary potentials in the bulk and on the branes. The equations of motion are solved in a linearized approximation in the 5th dimension, whereupon they require the search for extrema of an ``effective potential'', which depends nonlinearly on the action in the bulk and on the branes. A field theoretic description of monopole condensation in strongly coupled gauge theories is given by actions involving antisymmetric tensors B_{\mu\nu} of rank 2. We rederive the corresponding action for 4d compact QED, summing explicitly over all possible monopole configurations. Its gauge symmetries and Ward identities are discussed. Then we consider the Wilsonian RGs for Yang-Mills theories in the presence of collective fields (again tensors B_{\mu\nu}) for the field strengths F_{\mu \nu} associated to the U(1) subgroups. We show that a ``vector-like'' Ward identity for the Wilsonian action involving B_{\mu\nu}, whose validity corresponds to monopole condensation, constitutes a fixed point of the Wilsonian RG flow., Comment: 18 pages (LaTeX2e), 1 fig

We study the constraints on the parameter space of the supersymmetric standard model extended by a gauge singlet, which arise from the absence of global minima of the effective potential with slepton or squark vevs. Particular attention is paid to the so-called ``UFB'' directions in field space, which are F-flat in the MSSM. Although these directions are no longer F-flat in the (M+1)SSM, we show that the corresponding MSSM-like constraints on m_0/M_{1/2} apply also to the (M+1)SSM. We study unconventional signatures of the NMSSM (the MSSM with an additional gauge singlet) with a singlino LSP. We study the possible signals of the (M+1)SSM with a singlino LSP at LEP2. First we identify regions of the parameter space which are ruled out by negative results of sparticle searches in the context of the MSSM. In the remaining kinematically accessible regions we present total event rates for topologies which require further studies, i.e. estimations of the corresponding efficiencies: various 4 charged fermion final states with missing energy, possibly with displaced vertices due to a long lifetime of the NLSP, the second lightest neutralino. In the (M+1)SSM an additional gauge singlet Weyl spinor appears in the neutralino sector. For a large part of the parameter space this approximative eigenstate is the true LSP. Then most sparticle decays proceed via an additional cascade involving the NLSP -> LSP transition, where the NLSP is the non-singlet next-to-lightest neutralino. We present a comprehensive list of all processes, which contribute to the NLSP -> LSP transition, the partial widths and the total NLSP decay rate. We perform a scan of the parameters of the model compatible with universal soft terms, and find that the NLSP life time can be quite large, leading to macroscopically displaced vertices. Our results imply that the signatures for sparticle production in the (M+1)SSM can be very different from the MSSM, and are important for calculations of the abundance of dark matter in this model., Comment: 25 pages (LaTeX2e), 8 figs., explanations added

The supersymmetric extension of the standard model with an additional gauge singlet is analysed in detail in the light of the recent experimental bounds on supersymmetric particles. The useful part of the parameter space and the particle spectrum are displayed. We find that once the recent bounds on the chargino mass are imposed, all other new particles practically satisfy the present experimental limits. Special attention is given to particles to be searched for in the future experiments. The singlet fields tend to decouple and give rise to an effective MSSM, enlarging the validity of many phenomenological analyses based in the minimal field content. However, in some ranges of the parameters the singlino is the lightest neutralino, which modifies the signature for susy particles. Wilson's exact renormalization group equations are derived and integrated for the relevant part of the pure Yang-Mills action. We discuss in detail how modified Slavnov-Taylor identities controle the breaking of BRST invariance in the presence of a finite infrared cutoff $k$ through relations among different parameters in the effective action. In particular they imply a nonvanishing gluon mass term for nonvanishing $k$.
