3. A Systematic Review: Quantitative Analysis of the Relationship between Receipt of a Scalable Belonging Intervention and Academic Success at a Community College in South Carolina

Abstract

Community colleges have long focused on preparing graduates for well-paid careers in middle-skill jobs, playing an important democratizing role in American society. Community colleges enroll 47% of the total students enrolled in undergraduate studies in the United States (Bers & Schuetz, 2014, p. 1). This systematic review examines the relationship between the receipt of a short belonging intervention and student success as measured by persistence to the next term, term GPA, and course withdrawal rate. The intervention group consisted of 210 new, returning, and transfer students enrolling in a college credential program for the summer term of 2021 at a community college in the northwestern corner of South Carolina. The control group was composed of new, returning, and transfer students in the summer of 2020. The results of this study suggest no statistically significant difference in the persistence, first-term grade point average (GPA), or course withdrawal rates at the end of the first term for the intervention cohort. However, results indicate receipt of the intervention does no harm, and there is evidence of an improvement in persistence for some demographic groups. Practical implications for institutions and institutional leaders seeking to improve student success are discussed. Abstract

In Enterobacteriaceae, the ProP protein, which takes up proline and glycine betaine, is subject to a post-translational control mechanism that increases its activity at high osmolarity. In order to investigate the osmoregulatory mechanism of the Salmonella enterica ProP, we devised a positive selection for mutations that conferred increased activity on this protein at low osmolarity. The selection involved the isolation of mutations in a proline auxotroph that resulted in increased accumulation of proline via the ProP system in the presence of glycine betaine, which is a competitive inhibitor of proline uptake by this permease. This selection was performed by first-year undergraduates in two semesters of a research-based laboratory course. The students generated sixteen mutations resulting in six different single amino acids substitutions. They determined the effects of the mutations on the growth rates of the cells in media of high and low osmolarity in the presence of low concentrations of proline or glycine betaine. Furthermore, they identified the mutations by DNA sequencing and displayed the mutated amino acids on a putative three-dimensional structure of the protein. This analysis suggested that all six amino acid substitutions are residues in trans-membrane helices that have been proposed to contribute to the formation of the transport pore, and, thus, may affect the substrate binding site of the protein. Abstract

The human gut microbiota is able to degrade otherwise undigestible polysaccharides, largely through the activity of the Bacteroides . Uptake of polysaccharides into Bacteroides is controlled by TonB-dependent transporters (TBDT) whose transport is energized by an inner membrane complex composed of the proteins TonB, ExbB, and ExbD. Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (B. theta) encodes 11 TonB homologs which are predicted to be able to contact TBDTs to facilitate transport. However, it is not clear which TonBs are important for polysaccharide uptake. Using strains in which each of the 11 predicted tonB genes are deleted, we show that TonB4 (BT2059) is important but not essential for proper growth on starch. In the absence of TonB4, we observed an increase in abundance of TonB6 (BT2762) in the membrane of B. theta , suggesting functional redundancy of these TonB proteins. Growth of the single deletion strains on pectin galactan, chondroitin sulfate, arabinan, and levan suggests a similar functional redundancy of the TonB proteins. A search for highly homologous proteins across other Bacteroides species and recent work in B. fragilis suggests that TonB4 is widely conserved and may play a common role in polysaccharide uptake. However, proteins similar to TonB6 are found only in B. theta and closely related species suggesting that the functional redundancy of TonB4 and TonB6 may be limited across the Bacteroides . This study extends our understanding of the protein network required for polysaccharide utilization in B. theta and highlights differences in TonB complexes across Bacteroides species.

Abstract

Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause congenital brain and eye abnormalities and is associated with neurodevelopmental abnormalities (1-3). In areas of the United States that experienced local Zika virus transmission, the prevalence of birth defects potentially related to Zika virus infection during pregnancy increased in the second half of 2016 compared with the first half (4). To update the previous report, CDC analyzed population-based surveillance data from 22 states and territories to estimate the prevalence of birth defects potentially related to Zika virus infection, regardless of laboratory evidence of or exposure to Zika virus, among pregnancies completed during January 1, 2016-June 30, 2017. Jurisdictions were categorized as those 1) with widespread local transmission of Zika virus; 2) with limited local transmission of Zika virus; and 3) without local transmission of Zika virus. Among 2,004,630 live births, 3,359 infants and fetuses with birth defects potentially related to Zika virus infection during pregnancy were identified (1.7 per 1,000 live births, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.6-1.7). In areas with widespread local Zika virus transmission, the prevalence of birth defects potentially related to Zika virus infection during pregnancy was significantly higher during the quarters comprising July 2016-March 2017 (July-September 2016 = 3.0; October-December 2016 = 4.0; and January-March 2017 = 5.6 per 1,000 live births) compared with the reference period (January-March 2016) (1.3 per 1,000). These findings suggest a fourfold increase (prevalence ratio [PR] = 4.1, 95% CI = 2.1-8.4) in birth defects potentially related to Zika virus in widespread local transmission areas during January-March 2017 compared with that during January-March 2016, with the highest prevalence (7.0 per 1,000 live births) in February 2017. Population-based birth defects surveillance is critical for identifying infants and fetuses with birth defects potentially related to Zika virus regardless of whether Zika virus testing was conducted, especially given the high prevalence of asymptomatic disease.
