Background: Indigenous Sudanese cattle are mainly indicine/zebu (humped) type. They thrive in the harshest dryland environments characterised by high temperatures, long seasonal dry periods, nutritional shortages, and vector disease challenges. Here, we sequenced 60 indigenous Sudanese cattle from six indigenous breeds and analysed the data using three genomic scan approaches to unravel cattle adaptation to the African dryland region., Results: We identified a set of gene-rich selective sweep regions, detected mostly on chromosomes 5, 7 and 19, shared across African and Gir zebu. These include genes involved in immune response, body size and conformation, and heat stress response. We also identified selective sweep regions unique to Sudanese zebu. Of these, a 250 kb selective sweep on chromosome 16 spans seven genes, including PLCH2, PEX10, PRKCZ, and SKI, which are involved in alternative adaptive metabolic strategies of insulin signalling, glucose homeostasis, and fat metabolism., Conclusions: Our results suggest that environmental adaptation may involve recent and ancient selection at gene-rich regions, which might be under a common regulatory genetic control, in zebu cattle., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Evaluating potential adverse health impacts caused by pesticides is an important parameter in human toxicity. This study focuses on the importance of subchronic toxicity assessment of cymoxanil fungicide in rats with special reference to target biochemical enzymes and histopathological changes in different tissues. In this regard, a 21-day toxicity study with repeated cymoxanil oral doses was conducted. It has been shown that low doses (0.5 mg/kg) were less effective than medium (1 mg/kg) and high (2 mg/kg) doses. Moreover, high dose dose-treated rats showed piecemeal necrosis in the liver, interstitial nephritis and tubular degeneration in the kidneys, interstitial pneumonia and type II pneumocyte hyperplasia in the lungs, gliosis, spongiosis, and malacia in the brain, and testicular edema and degeneration in the testes. Cymoxanil significantly increased AST, ALT, and ALP in serum and liver, indicating tissue necrosis and possible leakage of these enzymes into the bloodstream. Creatinine levels increased, indicating renal damage. Similarly, significant inhibition was recorded in brain acetylcholinesterase, indicating that both synaptic transmission and nerve conduction were affected. Importantly, these histopathological and biochemical alterations were dose-dependent. Taken together, our study reported interesting biochemical and histopathological alterations in different rat tissues following repeated toxicity with oral doses of cymoxanil. Our study suggests future studies on different pesticides at different concentrations that would help urge governments to create more restrictive regulations concerning these compounds' levels.

The accurate and early diagnosis of rabies is critical for undertaking public health measures in animals. The aim of the current study was to identify the molecular characterization of the circulating rabies virus (RABV) among camels (Camelus dromedaries) in Oman and to evaluate the efficacy of the histopathology and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as diagnostic tools of acute rabies encephalitis in camels in comparison with direct fluorescent antibody test (dFAT). Of the forty-five brain samples from suspected camels submitted to the Animal Health Research Center in Oman (2009-2013), 22 cases were positive by dFAT and RT-PCR. Two positive samples were subjected for N gene nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis (accession numbers GU353156 and KC883998 for brain samples collected in 2009 and 2011, respectively). The specificity and sensitivity of histopathology were 100% and 81%, respectively, while in RT-PCR were 100% and 100%, respectively. The neuropathological changes were presence of intracytoplasmic inclusions (Negri bodies) in the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus beside prominent cerebral and cerebellar congestion and hemorrhage. Neuronal necrosis with satellitosis and neuronophagia were also noticed in the cerebrum of affected brains. Conclusively, there was one genetic group of RABV with 99% homology circulating in Omani camels. Also, it is concluded that histopathological examination is a safe and reliable diagnostic tool when only formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded material is available, but the negative results should be reaffirmed by dFAT or RT-PCR.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious acute viral disease that causes severe economic losses to the affected countries. To estimate the serological prevalence of the local livestock to the natural infection with FMD virus, a cross-sectional study was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in Oman. Sera from 5807 randomly selected animals (1792 cattle, 2119 goats and 1896 sheep) belonging to 884 herds were tested for the presence of antibodies against 3ABC non-structural protein (NSP) of the FMD virus by a Competition ELISA. Prevalence along with confidence intervals (CI) and odds ratio (OR) was calculated, and the data were further analysed through univariable and multivariable techniques. The herd-level seroprevalence of NSP (41.4%) varied significantly among 11 governorates of Oman. At herd-level seroprevalence varied significantly among cattle (55.2%), goats (38.2%) and sheep (37.7%). At animal-level, the significantly higher prevalence was recorded in cattle (26.8%) followed by sheep (17.9%) and goats (17.3%). Binary logistic regression analysis at the individual level indicated that cattle (OR: 1.88), livestock above one year of age (OR: 3.47), imported breeds (OR: 1.82) and females (OR: 1.27) were the risk factors associated with higher prevalence. Whereas, sedentary (OR: 2.63) farming system, vaccination against FMD (OR: 5.98) and previous history of FMD (OR: 5.55) were the variables found associated with higher seroprevalence at the herd-level. We conclude that natural infection of FMDV is widespread in Oman and in future molecular typing of FMD virus outbreaks strains and vaccine matching studies should be employed to develop an effective control program in Oman., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this report is to determine frequencies and associations of p53 codon 72 arg/pro polymorphism with different types of cancer in Sudan. p53 codon72 arg/pro polymorphism distribution and allele frequencies in 264 samples of different types of cancers were investigated using PCR. The results were compared to 235 normal controls. The results indicated significant differences in frequency and genotype association between different types of cancers. Breast carcinoma patients most prominently showed excess of homozygous arg genotype as compared to controls with an Odd ratio (OR) of 19.44, 95 %CI: 6.6-78.3, P < 0.0001. Less prominently cervical cancer showed genotype effect of 2.4 OR, 95 %CI: 1.12-5.33, P = 0.015, while esophageal cancer had an OR of 0.57, 95 %CI: 0.23-1.42, P = 0.1. In Burkitt's lymphoma, however, in contrast the homozygous arg accounted for only 6.9 %, (OR 0.18, 95 %CI: 0.02-0.89, P = 0.018). We concluded that p53 arg/pro polymorphism has different pattern of frequency in different types of cancer among Sudanese patients, indicating perhaps different etiology and biology of these tumours.

Epidemiological studies indicate that infections by certain types of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are causally linked to the development of cervical cancer. It is also known that HPV infections alone do not cause progression to cervical cancer, as additional genetic changes such as loss of distinct chromosomal regions, inactivation of tumor-suppressor genes and activation of oncogenes must also occur in order for malignant transformation to take place. In the present study, 78 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer and 36 cervical cancer-free cases (control) were analyzed for high-risk HPV genotypes (16 and 18) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of the retinoblastoma gene (Rb) at two polymorphic intronic sites (intron 1 and 17) and the p53 polymorphism in codon 72 were detected by RFLP and allele-specific PCR, respectively. HPV 16 and 18 were found at frequencies of 93.6 and 8.3% in the cervical cancer and control samples, respectively. LOH was detected in 63% of patients in intron 1 and/or intron 17. p53 allele frequency for Arg/Arg was 43.6% (34/78), for Arg/Pro 37.2% (29/78) and for Pro/Pro 19.2% (15/78). The relative risk (RR) of LOH and Arg/Arg alone was 1.7 and 1.1, respectively, while the combined RR for Rb LOH and p53 Arg/Arg was 2.5. The present study showed a significant association of the chromosomal allelic loss of Rb in Sudanese cervical cancer patients, while no such association was observed with other parameters, such as clinical stage and degree of differentiation; hence, it cannot be a determinant of tumor behavior in cervical carcinoma. Although the p53 arginine allele is itself an important risk factor for cervical cancer, the combined risk with LOH of Rb, which appears to be greater, might indicate a possible epistatic effect of the two genes/polymorphisms.

The present study was conducted to study the susceptibility of two different types of Sudanese goats namely: Black Nubian, the Nilotic dwarf goats and ewes of Garag type to experimental infection with Trypanosoma vivax stock isolated from cattle outside tsetse area. The infection caused parasitaemia, anaemia and pyrexia in the infected goats. However, the Nilotic dwarf goats were more tolerant to the infection than the Nubian goats, showing significantly higher values of packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration, total red and white blood cells counts and significantly low parasitaemia and low body temperature. Garag ewes which were found to be susceptible to T. vivax infection showed different signs of anaemia and pyrexia; it is recommended that comparative studies on sensitivity of this type and other different Sudanese types of sheep to Trypanosomosis should be conducted.
