This study investigated the influence of parameters such as pH condition, polyelectrolyte concentration, polymer ratio, and order of addition of the commercial polyelectrolytes chitosan and iota-carrageenan (ι-carrageenan) on the formation of polymeric nanoparticles in suspension (coacervates). A preliminary purification step of the polymers was essential for obtaining stable nanoparticles with small sizes as impurities, particularly metal ions that interfere with complexation, are removed by dialysis. Microparticles (13.5 μm in dry diameter) are obtained when aliquots of chitosan solution are poured into the ι-carrageenan solution. In general, an excess of chitosan results in the formation of agglomerated particles. The addition of an aliquot of ι-carrageenan solution (30 mL at 0.6 mg/mL and pH 4.0) to the chitosan solution (6.0 mL at 0.3 mg/mL and pH 4.0) leads to dispersed nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic radius of 278 ± 5 nm, a zeta potential of −31 ± 3 mV, and an average dry diameter of 45 ± 11 nm. The hydrodynamic radius increases as the pH rises. The partial deprotonation of ι-carrageenan chains enhances the interaction with water molecules, causing the particles to swell. These findings contribute to the fundamental understanding of polyelectrolyte complexation processes in aqueous suspension and provide insights for developing stable nanomaterials for potential practical applications.

The development of biosensors for determining the most diverse biomolecules is a constant focus of many research groups. There is a latent need to propose sensors that combine portability, simple measurements, and good analytical performance. Here, we propose an electrochemical immunosensor that is fully portable and energy-independent for diagnosing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Initially, disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPEs) were covered by gold microblobs (AuMBs), which were synthesized amperometrically from Au3+ ions. Then, the SPE-AuMBs were coated with cysteamine, which allowed the N-hydroxysuccinimide-activated SARS-CoV-2 antigen (spike protein) to be immobilized. The antigen-activated electrode was used to detect COVID-19 antibodies from current measurements obtained by differential pulse voltammetry. The AuMBs synthesis time was optimized, and the presence of gold structures improved the electrochemical responses of the SPE. It was possible to quantitatively determine antibodies in the concentration range of 0.25 to 10 µg mL−1. This range includes concentrations found in biological fluids from patients at any stage of the disease. An analysis took approximately the same time as traditional rapid nasal tests (20 min) and costed less, considering all the steps necessary to prepare a disposable antigen-functionalized SPE.

This study presents fibers based on methacrylic acid–methyl methacrylate (Eudragit L100) as Cu(II) adsorbents, resulting in antimicrobial complexes. Eudragit L100, an anionic copolymer synthesized by radical polymerization, was electrospun in dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethanol (EtOH). The electrospinning process was optimized through a 22-factorial design, with independent variables (copolymer concentration and EtOH/DMF volume ratio) and three repetitions at the central point. The smallest average fiber diameter (259 ± 53 nm) was obtained at 14% w/v Eudragit L100 and 80/20 EtOH/DMF volume ratio. The fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode (FTIR-ATR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The pseudo-second-order mechanism explained the kinetic adsorption toward Cu(II). The fibers exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity (qe) of 43.70 mg/g. The DSC analysis confirmed the Cu(II) absorption, indicating complexation between metallic ions and copolymer networks. The complexed fibers showed a lower degree of swelling than the non-complexed fibers. The complexed fibers exhibited bacteriostatic activity against Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. This study successfully optimized the electrospinning process to produce thin fibers based on Eudragit L100 for potential applications as adsorbents for Cu(II) ions in aqueous media and for controlling bacterial growth.

Purpose: The 21st century has witnessed an explosive growth of both South Korean popular culture (K-pop) and automobiles (K-car) in Western societies. However, K-pop appears to maintain its success better than K-car. This paper will evaluate the origins of K-pop and K-car and determine the distinguishing factors that led to continued K-pop compared to K-car success.

This study presents the development of fibers with favorable properties for biodegradable wound dressings made from the Ecovio® (EC) polymer blend, composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), incorporated with tea tree essential oil (TTE). TTE presented antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, achieving minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 15 and 7.5 mg/mL, respectively. The TTE was mixed with EC in a binary chloroform and formic acid (85/15 v/v) mixture. The EC/TTE fibers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirming the TTE in the fibers. The tests showed that TTE (0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 mL) improved the polymer blend's electrospinnability, leading to bead-free, homogenous, and smaller fiber diameters. TTE (1.5 mL or 75 w% concerning the EC) leads to homogeneous fibers with an average diameter of 278 ± 59 nm. TTE (75 w%) increased the wettability of the EC fibers from 120 ± 2° to 69 ± 1°. Preliminary bacterial adhesion and proliferation assays demonstrated that the EC/TTE fibers have anti-adhesive activity and demonstrate greater toxicity, which seems more toxic against P. aeruginosa than S. aureus after 24 h of incubation. Fluorescence and coagulation kinetics tests performed with human blood indicated that the EC/TTE fibers accelerate blood coagulation. Fungi (Neolentinus lepideus, Nl, and Trametes versicolor, Tv) impart wood rot, leading to economic and environmental issues. To overcome this issue, toxic chemicals are commonly employed for wood preservation, impacting the environment and human health. Surface coatings based on antimicrobial chitosan (CS) of high molar mass (145 × 105 Da) were tested as wood preservation agents using an innovative strategy involving ultra-pressurizing CS solutions to deposit organic coatings on wood samples. Before coating deposition, the antifungal activity of CS in diluted acetic acid (AcOOH) solutions was evaluated against the rot fungi models Neolentinus lepideus (Nl) and Trametes versicolor (Tv). CS effectively inhibited fungal growth, particularly in solutions with concentrations equal to or higher than 0.125 mg/mL. Wood samples (Eucalyptus sp. and Pinus sp.) were then coated with CS under ultra-pressurization at 70 bar. The polymeric coating deposition on wood was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and water contact angle measurements. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra of the uncoated and coated samples suggested that CS does not penetrate the bulk of the wood samples due to its high molar mass but penetrates in the surface pores, leading to its impregnation in wood samples. Coated and uncoated wood samples were exposed to fungi (Tv and Nl) for 12 weeks. In vivo testing revealed that Tv and Nl fungi did not grow on wood samples coated with CS, whereas the fungi proliferated on uncoated samples. CS of high molar mass has film-forming properties, leading to a thin hydrophobic film on the wood surface (water contact angle of 118°). This effect is mainly attributed to the high molar mass of CS and the hydrogen bonding interactions established between CS chains and cellulose. This hydrophobic film prevents water interaction, resulting in a stable coating with insignificant leaching of CS after the stability test. The CS coating can offer a sustainable strategy to prevent wood degradation, overcoming the disadvantages of toxic chemicals often used as wood preservative agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We define a new four-parameter model called the odd log-logistic generalized inverse Gaussian distribution which extends the generalized inverse Gaussian and inverse Gaussian distributions. We obtain some structural properties of the new distribution. We construct an extended regression model based on this distribution with two systematic structures, which can provide more realistic fits to real data than other special regression models. We adopt the method of maximum likelihood to estimate the model parameters. In addition, various simulations are performed for different parameter settings and sample sizes to check the accuracy of the maximum likelihood estimators. We provide a diagnostics analysis based on case-deletion and quantile residuals. Finally, the potentiality of the new regression model to predict price of urban property is illustrated by means of real data.

Purpose: Recently, magic has been given increasing attention by psychologists for what it can reveal about how the human cognitive system works. This paper examines whether these same cognitive processes are at play in another arena, specifi cally, the presentation of financial accounting� information. Approach: The authors reviewed the fi ndings of cognitive scientists from their studies of magicians and applied these to the activities of professional accountants. Findings: Specifi c cognitive processes which magicians and accountants take advantage of, explicitly for one and implicitly for the other, are the same: good continuation, habituation, and attentional capture. Value: Further research regarding such interactions between accounting and cognition has potential for enhancing our understanding of both. Certainly at this particular point in accounting history, as standard setters seem to be moving ever closer to implementing some version of a principles-based accounting regime versus our current rules-based accounting regime, it is worthwhile to contemplate the conscious and subconscious effects of cognitive processes on how individuals perceive financial information.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a produção de alface e rabanete em cultivo solteiro e consorciado em sistema orgânico. O experimento foi realizado no campo experimental da UEMS, Glória de Dourados, MS, num solo classificado como Argissolo Vermelho, textura arenosa. O delineamento estatístico utilizado no experimento foi de blocos casualizados, com três repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por três cultivares de alface consorciadas com uma de rabanete: 1) Alface americana em monocultivo, 2) Alface crespa em monocultivo, 3) Alface roxa em monocultivo, 4) Rabanete em monocultivo, 5) Alface americana consorciada com rabanete, 6) Alface crespa consorciada com rabanete e 7) Alface roxa consorciada com rabanete. Nas condições em que foi executado este experimento, pode-se concluir que o cultivo consorciado de alface com rabanete foi adequado do ponto de vista agronômico, pois a presença do rabanete não prejudicou a produção de alface, além de se apresentar como possibilidade concreta de gerar renda extra para o agricultor em uma mesma área física.
