The JWST North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time Domain Field (TDF) is a $>$14 arcmin diameter field optimized for multi-wavelength time-domain science with JWST. It has been observed across the electromagnetic spectrum both from the ground and from space, including with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). As part of HST observations over 3 cycles (the "TREASUREHUNT" program), deep images were obtained with ACS/WFC in F435W and F606W that cover almost the entire JWST NEP TDF. Many of the individual pointings of these programs partially overlap, allowing an initial assessment of the potential of this field for time-domain science with HST and JWST. The cumulative area of overlapping pointings is ~88 arcmin$^2$, with time intervals between individual epochs that range between 1 day and 4$+$ years. To a depth of $m_{AB}$ $\simeq$ 29.5 mag (F606W), we present the discovery of 12 transients and 190 variable candidates. For the variable candidates, we demonstrate that Gaussian statistics are applicable, and estimate that ~80 are false positives. The majority of the transients will be supernovae, although at least two are likely quasars. Most variable candidates are AGN, where we find 0.42% of the general $z$ $<$ 6 field galaxy population to vary at the $~3\sigma$ level. Based on a 5-year timeframe, this translates into a random supernova areal density of up to ~0.07 transients per arcmin$^2$ (~245 deg$^{-2}$) per epoch, and a variable AGN areal density of ~1.25 variables per arcmin$^2$ (~4500 deg$^{-2}$) to these depths., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, 1 Appendix

The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. Recent deep Chandra observations of nearby Compton thick (CT) AGN have produced surprising results, uncovering extended emission not only in the soft X-rays but in the hard emission (>3 keV), challenging the long-held belief that the characteristic hard X-ray continuum and fluorescent Fe Ka lines are associated with the torus in the standard picture of AGN. In this work, we present the analysis of our deep (~261 ks) X-ray Chandra ACIS-S observations of NGC 5728, a nearby (z=0.00932) CT AGN. We find that the diffuse emission is more extended at lower energies, in the bicone direction out to ~2 kpc radially, but also significantly extended in the direction of the cross-cone, out to ~1.4 kpc. Our results suggest that the ratio of detected photons in the cross-cone to the bicone region is ~16%, below 3 keV, decreasing to 5% for energies 3-6 keV. The nuclear spectrum suggests a low photoionization phase mixed with a more ionized gas component, while the bicone and cross-cone spectra are dominated by a mix of photoionization and shocked gas emission. A mixture of thermal and photoionization models to fit the spectra indicates the presence of complex gas interactions, consistent with previous observations of other CT AGN (e.g., ESO 428-G014).

We present Chandra ACIS-S imaging spectroscopy results of the extended (1.5''- 8'', 300 pc-1600 pc) hard X-ray emission of NGC 5728, the host galaxy of a Compton thick active galactic nucleus (CT AGN). We find spectrally and spatially-resolved features in the Fe K$\alpha$ complex (5.0-7.5 keV), redward and blueward of the neutral Fe line at 6.4 keV in the extended narrow line region bicone. A simple phenomenological fit of a power law plus Gaussians gives a significance of 5.4$\sigma$ and 3.7$\sigma$ for the red and blue wings, respectively. Fits to a suite of physically consistent models confirm a significance $\geq$3$\sigma$ for the red wing. The significance of the blue wing may be diminished by the presence of rest frame highly ionized Fe XXV and Fe XXVI lines (1.4$\sigma$ - 3.7$\sigma$ range). A detailed investigation of the Chandra ACIS-S point spread function (PSF) and comparison with the observed morphology demonstrates that these red and blue wings are radially extended (~5'', ~1 kpc) along the optical bicone axis. If the wings emission is due solely to redshifted and blueshifted high-velocity neutral Fe K$\alpha$ then the implied line-of-sight velocities are +/- ~0.1c, and their fluxes are consistent with being equal. A symmetric high-velocity outflow is then a viable explanation. This outflow has deprojected velocities ~100 times larger than the outflows detected in optical spectroscopic studies, potentially dominating the kinetic feedback power., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ

We examine the long-term history of the optical spectrum of the extremely variable Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) MKN 110. By combining various archival data with new data, we cover an unprecedented long period of $\sim$30 years (1987 - 2019). We find that the He II $\lambda 4686$ emission line changes by a factor of forty and varies more strongly than the optical continuum. Following Ferland et al. (2020), we take He II $\lambda 4686$ as a proxy for the FUV continuum and compare the flux of several other line species against it. This comparison reveals a clear pattern, whereby lines respond close to linearly at low FUV fluxes, and saturate at high FUV fluxes. The saturation level of the response appears to depend on the excitation energy of the line species. In addition to this global pattern, we note changes among observational epochs, indicating a structural evolution in the broad line region (BLR). The line profiles in our spectra show an offset between the narrow and broad components of the He II $\lambda 4686$ and H$\beta$ lines. This offset shows a significant negative correlation with the FUV flux and a positive correlation with the line velocity width. Our analysis reveals a complex BLR response to a changing continuum. The clear presence of a non-responsive component of the broad lines indicates the existence of multiple contributions to the line emission. We find there are several kinematic models of the BLR and inner regions of the AGN that match our data., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

The non-linear relation between the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity in quasars has been used to derive quasar distances and to build a Hubble diagram at redshifts up to $z\sim$ 7. This cosmological application is based on the assumption of independence of the relation on redshift and luminosity. We want to test the reliability of this hypothesis by studying the spectroscopic properties of high-redshift quasars in the X-ray and UV bands. We performed a one-by-one analysis of a sample of 130 quasars at $z>$ 2.5 with high-quality X-ray and UV spectroscopic observations. We found that not only the X-ray to UV correlation still holds at these redshifts, but its intrinsic dispersion is as low as 0.12 dex (previous works reached 0.20$-$0.22 dex). For a sample of quasars at $z\sim$ 3 with particularly high-quality observations the dispersion further drops to 0.09 dex, a value entirely accountable for by intrinsic variability and source geometry effects. The composite spectra of these quasars, in both the X-rays and the UV, do not show any difference with respect to the average spectra of quasars at lower redshifts. The absence of any spectral difference between high- and low-$z$ quasars and the tightness of the X-ray to UV relation suggests that no evolutionary effects are present in the relation. Therefore, it can be safely employed to derive quasar distances. Under this assumption, we obtain a measurement of the luminosity distance at $z\sim$ 3 with 15 % uncertainty, and in a 4$\sigma$ tension with the concordance model., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, 8 pages, 6 figures

Imaging X-ray spectroscopy of nearby AGNs, mostly with Chandra, has shown that extended soft (<2.5 keV) emission-line dominated X-ray biconical structures, of kiloparsec scale, are widespread in highly absorbed Compton Thick (CT) AGNs. The X-ray emission is complex, requiring both photoionized and shock-ionized gas. It originates from high ionization regions and is surrounded by cocoons of low ionization narrow line emission regions (LINERS). Bicone 3-6 keV continuum and 6.4 keV Fe Kalpha emission has been detected, contrary to the standard AGN model expectation that would confine this hard emission to the pc-size nuclear absorbing torus. Extended emission in the cross-cone direction, also requires modifications to the AGN standard model. A porous torus, with a significant fraction of escaping AGN continuum, and/or jet interaction with ISM creating a blow-back towards the nuclear region seem to be required. Here we discuss these results and their implications for both the AGN model and our understanding of AGN feedback. The finding of hot and highly photoionized gas on 10s parsecs to several kiloparsec scales demonstrates that all three feedback mechanisms are at work: radiation affects the inner molecular clouds of the host on a ~1 kpc scale; shocks of relativistic jets with the host ISM a few kpc from the central AGN; and photoionization of the ISM via winds on scales from pc to multiple kpc. These results demonstrate that X-rays are needed to develop a complete picture of AGN/host interaction along with radio continuum, mm and sub-mm molecular line emission, and optical/near-IR emission lines., Comment: This is a review mostly based on Chandra results on the extended X-ray emission of AGNs. We present a detailed spectral and imaging analysis of the central $15''$ radius ($\sim 7.5 \text{ kpc}$) region of the merger galaxy NGC 6240 that makes use of all the available \textit{Chandra}-ACIS data ($0.3 - 3 \text{ keV}$ effective exposure of $\sim 190 \text{ ks}$). This region shows extended X-ray structures with lower energy counterparts imaged in CO, [O III] and H$\alpha$ line emission. We find both photo-ionized phases of possible nuclear excitation and thermal shock-excited emission in the different large-scale components: the north-west "loop" detected in H$\alpha$, the region surrounding the two nuclei, the large outflow region to the north-east detected in [O III], and the southern X-ray extensions. The latter could be the ionization cone of the northern nucleus, with the N counterpart being obscured by the galaxy disk. The radial distribution of the X-ray surface brightness suggests a confined hot interstellar medium at $r < 2.5 \text{ kpc}$, with a free-flowing wind at larger radii; if the confinement is magnetic, we estimate B-field values of $\sim 100\,\mu \text{G}$ , similar to those measured in the halo of M82. The thermal gas of the extended halo at $kT \sim 1 \text{ keV}$ absorbs soft X-rays from the AGN, but not the extreme ultraviolet radiation leading to a rapid increase in $F_{\text{[O III]}}/F_{\text{X}}$ beyond $\sim 3 \text{ kpc}$. The $\alpha$ element to Fe abundance ratios of the thermal components in the different regions of the extended X-ray emission are generally compatible with SNe II yields, confirming the importance of the active star formation in NGC 6240., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication on ApJ

We present the $NuSTAR$ extragalactic survey of the $James$ $Webb$ $Space$ $Telescope$ ($JWST$) North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time-Domain Field. The survey covers a $\sim$0.16 deg$^2$ area with a total exposure of 681 ks acquired in a total of nine observations from three epochs. The survey sensitivities at 20% of the area are 2.39, 1.14, 2.76, 1.52, and 5.20 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 3-24, 3-8, 8-24, 8-16, and 16-24 keV bands, respectively. The NEP survey is one of the most sensitive extragalactic surveys with $NuSTAR$ so far. A total of 33 sources were detected above 95% reliability in at least one of the five bands. We present the number counts, log$N$-log$S$, measured in the hard X-ray 8-24 and 8-16 keV bands, uniquely accessible by $NuSTAR$ down to such faint fluxes. We performed source detection on the XMM-$Newton$ and $Chandra$ observations of the same field to search for soft X-ray counterparts of each $NuSTAR$ detection. The soft band positions were used to identify optical and infrared associations. We present the X-ray properties (hardness ratio and luminosity) and optical-to-X-ray properties of the detected sources. The measured fraction of candidate Compton-thick (N$\rm _H\ge10^{24} cm^{-2}$) active galactic nuclei, derived from the hardness ratio, is between 3% to 27%. As this survey was designed to have variability as its primary focus, we present preliminary results on multi-epoch flux variability in the 3-24 keV band., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures

We report the analysis of the deep (270 ks) X-ray Chandra data of one of the most radio-loud, Seyfert 2 galaxies in the nearby Universe (z=0.01135), IC 5063. The alignment of the radio structure with the galactic disk and ionized bi-cone, enables us to study the effects of both radio jet and nuclear irradiation on the interstellar medium (ISM). The nuclear and bi-cone spectra suggest a low photoionization phase mixed with a more ionized or thermal gas component, while the cross-cone spectrum is dominated by shocked and collisionally ionized gas emission. The clumpy morphology of the soft (<3 keV) X-ray emission along the jet trails, and the large (~2.4 kpc) filamentary structure perpendicular to the radio jets at softer energies (<1.5 keV), suggest a large contribution of the jet-ISM interaction to the circumnuclear gas emission. The hard X-ray continuum (>3 keV) and the Fe K-alpha 6.4 keV emission are both extended to kpc size along the bi-cone direction, suggesting an interaction of nuclear photons with dense clouds in the galaxy disk, as observed in other Compton Thick (CT) active nuclei. The north-west cone spectrum also exhibits an Fe XXV emission line, which appears spatially extended and spatially correlated with the most intense radio hot-spot, suggesting jet-ISM interaction., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures and 3 tables (with 10 more figures and 3 more tables in the Appendix), submitted to ApJ on May 24, 2021

We analyse optical datacubes of the inner kiloparsec of 30 local ($z\le0.02$) active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosts that our research group, AGNIFS, has collected over the past decade via observations with the integral field units of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs. Spatial resolutions range between $50~{\rm pc}$ and $300~{\rm pc}$ and spectral coverage is from $4800~\mathring{A}$ or $5600~\mathring{A}$ to $7000~\mathring{A}$, at velocity resolutions of $\approx 50~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. We derive maps of the gas excitation and kinematics, determine the AGN ionisation axis -- which has random orientation relative to the galaxy, and the kinematic major axes of the emitting gas. We find that rotation dominates the gas kinematics in most cases, but is disturbed by the presence of inflows and outflows. Outflows have been found in 21 nuclei, usually along the ionisation axis. The gas velocity dispersion is traced by $W_{80}$ (velocity width encompassing 80 per cent of the line flux), adopted as a tracer of outflows. In 7 sources $W_{80}$ is enhanced perpendicularly to the ionisation axis, indicating lateral expansion of the outflow. We have estimated mass-outflow rates $\dot{M}$ and powers $\dot{E}$, finding median values of $\log\,[\dot{M}/({\rm\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}})]=-2.1_{-1.0}^{+1.6}$ and $\log\,[\dot{E}/({\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}})]=38.5_{-0.9}^{+1.8}$, respectively. Both quantities show a mild correlation with the AGN luminosity ($L_{\rm AGN}$). $\dot{E}$ is of the order of 0.01 $L_{\rm AGN}$ for 4 sources, but much lower for the majority (9) of the sources, with a median value of $\log\,[\dot{E}/L_{\rm AGN}]=-5.34_{-0.9}^{+3.2}$ indicating that typical outflows in the local Universe are unlikely to significantly impact their host galaxy evolution.

We present a dynamical study of the narrow-line regions in two nearby QSO2s. We construct dynamical models based on detailed photoionization models of the emission-line gas, including the effects of internal dust, to apply to observations of large-scale outflows from these AGNs. We use Mrk 477 and Mrk 34 in order to test our models against recent HST STIS observations of [O III] emission-line kinematics since these AGNs possess more energetic outflows than found in Seyfert galaxies. We find that the outflows within 500 pc are consistent with radiative acceleration of dusty gas, however, the outflows in Mrk 34 are significantly more extended and may not be directly accelerated by radiation. We characterize the properties of X-ray winds found from the expansion of [O III]-emitting gas close to the black hole. We show that such winds possess the kinetic energy density to disturb [O III] gas at 1.8 kpc, and have sufficient energy to entrain the [O III] clouds at 1.2 kpc. Assuming that the X-ray wind possesses the same radial mass distribution as the [O III] gas, we find that the peak kinetic luminosity for this wind is 2% of Mrk 34's bolometric luminosity, which is in the 0.5% - 5% range required by some models for efficient feedback. Our work shows that, although the kinetic luminosity as measured from [O III]-emitting gas is frequently low, X-ray winds may provide more than one order of magnitude higher kinetic power.

NASA's Great Observatories have opened up the electromagnetic spectrum from space, providing sustained access to wavelengths not accessible from the ground. Together, Hubble, Compton, Chandra, and Spitzer have provided the scientific community with an agile and powerful suite of telescopes with which to attack broad scientific questions, and react to a rapidly changing scientific landscape. As the existing Great Observatories age, or are decommissioned, community access to these wavelengths will diminish, with an accompanying loss of scientific capability. We present results from high signal-to-noise optical spectropolarimetric observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC783 and Mrk509 in the 3500-7000 A range. We find complex structure in the polarized emission for both objects. In particular, Position Angle (PA) changes across the Balmer lines show a distinctive 'M'-shaped profile that had not been observed in this detail before, but could represent a common trait in Seyfert 1 galaxies. In fact, while this shape is observed in all Balmer lines in NGC3783, Mrk509 transitions into a 'M'-shaped PA profile for higher transitions lines. We have modeled the observed profiles using the STOKES radiative transfer code and assuming that the scattering region is co-spatial with the BLR and outflowing. We present the spatial analysis of five Compton thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including MKN 573, NGC 1386, NGC 3393, NGC 5643, and NGC 7212, for which high resolution Chandra observations are available. For each source, we find hard X-ray emission (>3 keV) extending to ~kpc scales along the ionization cone, and for some sources, in the cross-cone region. This collection represents the first, high-signal sample of CT AGN with extended hard X-ray emission for which we can begin to build a more complete picture of this new population of AGN. We investigate the energy dependence of the extended X-ray emission, including possible dependencies on host galaxy and AGN properties, and find a correlation between the excess emission and obscuration, suggesting a connection between the nuclear obscuring material and the galactic molecular clouds. Furthermore, we find that the soft X-ray emission extends farther than the hard X-rays along the ionization cone, which may be explained by a galactocentric radial dependence on the density of molecular clouds due to the orientation of the ionization cone with respect to the galactic disk. These results are consistent with other CT AGN with observed extended hard X-ray emission (e.g., ESO 428-G014 and the Ma et al. 2020 CT AGN sample), further demonstrating the ubiquity of extended hard X-ray emission in CT AGN., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Ultra Fast Outflows (UFOs) are an established feature in X-ray spectra of AGNs. According to the standard picture, they are launched at accretion disc scales with relativistic velocities, up to 0.3-0.4 c. Their high kinetic power is enough to induce an efficient feedback on galactic-scale, possibly contributing to the co-evolution between the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the host galaxy. It is therefore of paramount importance to fully understand the UFO physics, in particular the forces driving their acceleration and the relation with the accretion flow they originate from. In this paper we investigate the impact of special relativity effects on the radiative pressure exerted onto the outflow. The radiation received by the wind decreases for increasing outflow velocity v, implying that the standard Eddington limit argument has to be corrected according to v. Due to the limited ability of the radiation to counteract the SMBH gravity, we expect to find lower typical velocities with respect to the non-relativistic scenario. We integrate the relativistic-corrected outflow equation of motion for a realistic set of starting conditions. We concentrate on UFO typical values of ionisation, column density and launching radius. We explore a one-dimensional, spherical geometry and a 3D setting with a rotating thin accretion disc. We find that the inclusion of relativistic effects leads to sizeable differences in the wind dynamics and that v is reduced up to 50% with respect to the non-relativistic treatment. We compare our results with a sample of UFO from the literature, and we find that the relativistic-corrected velocities are systematically lower than the reported ones, indicating the need for an additional mechanism, such as magnetic driving, to explain the highest velocity components. We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit G430M and G750M spectra to analyse the extended [O~III] 5007A emission in a sample of twelve nearby (z < 0.12) luminous (L_bol > 1.6 x 10^45 erg s^-1) QSO2s. The purpose of the study is to determine the properties of the mass outflows of ionised gas and their role in AGN feedback. We measure fluxes and velocities as functions of radial distances. Using Cloudy models and ionising luminosities derived from [O~III] 5007A, we are able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derive masses of [O~III]-emitting gas, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies, kinetic luminosities, momenta and momentum flow rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. For the sample, masses are several times 10^3 - 10^7 solar masses and peak outflow rates are 9.3 x 10^-3 Msun/yr to 10.3 Msun/yr. The peak kinetic luminosities are 3.4 x 10^-8 to 4.9 x 10^-4 of the bolometric luminosity, which does not approach the 5.0 x 10^-3 - 5.0 x 10^-2 range required by some models for efficient feedback. For Mrk 34, which has the largest kinetic luminosity of our sample, in order to produce efficient feedback there would have to be 10 times more [O~III]-emitting gas than we detected at its position of maximum kinetic luminosity. Three targets show extended [O~III] emission, but compact outflow regions. We present a reanalysis of the cumulative ACIS S Chandra data set pointed at the double AGNs of the NGC 6240 merging galaxy, focusing on the hard energy bands containing the hard spectral continuum (5.5-5.9 keV), the redshifted Fe I K alpha line (6.0-6.4 keV), and the redshifted Fe XXV line (6.4-6.7 keV). We have used to the full the Chandra telescope angular resolution, and we have modeled the Chandra PSF by comparing pre-flight calibration model to the data for the two bright AGNs. With two complementary approaches: (1) studying the residuals after PSF subtraction, and (2) producing reconstructed Expectation through Markov Chain Monte Carlo (EMC2) images, we are able to resolve structures extending from 1 kpc to <200 pc in the S AGN. The latter are within the sphere of influence of this BH. We find significant extended emission in both continuum and Fe lines in the 2'' (1 kpc) region surrounding the nuclei, in the region between the N and S AGN, and in a sector of PA 120-210 deg. extending to the SE from the centroid of the S AGN surface brightness. The extended Fe I K alpha emission is likely to originate from fluorescence of X-ray photons interacting with dense molecular clouds, providing a complementary view to recent high-resolution ALMA studies. The non-thermal emission is more prevalent in the region in between the two active X-ray nuclei, and in the N AGN. We present a new catalogue of ~2,400 optically selected quasars with spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray observations from either Chandra or XMM-Newton. The sample can be used to investigate the non-linear relation between the UV and X-ray luminosity of quasars, and to build a Hubble diagram up to redshift z~7.5. We selected sources that are neither reddened by dust in the optical/UV nor obscured by gas in the X-rays, and whose X-ray fluxes are free from flux-limit related biases. After checking for any possible systematics, we confirm, in agreement with our previous works, that (i) the X-ray to UV relation provides distance estimates matching those from supernovae up to z~1.5, and (ii) its slope shows no redshift evolution up to z~5. We provide a full description of the methodology for testing cosmological models, further supporting a trend whereby the Hubble diagram of quasars is well reproduced by the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model up to z~1.5-2, but strong deviations emerge at higher redshifts. Since we have minimized all non-negligible systematic effects, and proven the stability of the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ relation at high redshifts, we conclude that an evolution of the expansion rate of the Universe should be considered as a possible explanation for the observed deviation, rather than some systematic (redshift-dependent) effect associated with high-redshift quasars., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

(abridged) We present the X-ray analysis of a sample of 30 luminous quasars at $z\simeq3.0-3.3$ with deep XMM-Newton observations, selected from the SDSS-DR7 to be representative of the most luminous, intrinsically blue quasar population. By construction, the sample boasts a unique degree of homogeneity in terms of optical/UV properties. In the X-rays, only four sources are too faint for a detailed spectral analysis. Neglecting a radio-loud object, the other 25 quasars are, as a whole, the most X-ray luminous ever observed, with rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosities of $0.5-7\times10^{45}$ erg/s. The continuum photon index distribution, centred at $\Gamma\sim1.85$, is in excellent agreement with those in place at lower redshift, luminosity and black-hole mass, confirming the universal nature of the X-ray emission mechanism in quasars. Even so, when compared against the well-known $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ correlation, our quasars unexpectedly split into two distinct subsets. About 2/3 of the sources are clustered around the relation with a minimal scatter of 0.1 dex, while the remaining 1/3 appear to be X-ray underluminous by factors of $>3-10$. Such a large incidence ($\approx25\%$) of X-ray weakness has never been reported in radio-quiet, non-BAL quasar samples. Several factors could contribute to enhance the X-ray weakness fraction among our $z\simeq3$ blue quasars. However, the X-ray weak objects also have, on average, flatter spectra, with no clear evidence of absorption. Indeed, column densities in excess of a few $\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be ruled out for most of the sample. We suggest that, at least in some of our X-ray weak quasars, the corona might experience a radiatively inefficient phase due to the presence of a powerful accretion-disc wind, which substantially reduces the accretion rate through the inner disc and so the availability of seed photons for Compton up-scattering., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (13+2 pages, 10+1 figures, 3 tables)

We report the detection in Chandra ACIS archival data of an elongated soft (<3 keV) X-ray feature tp the south of the Compton Thick Active Galactic Nucleus (CT AGN) galaxy IC 2497, coincident with the emission feature known as Hanny's Voorwerp (HV). The data are consistent with the spatial correspondence between X-ray, optical emission line, and radio features detected in nearby obscured AGNs (e.g., ESO 428-G014). The X-ray luminosity of the (0.3-3.0 keV) soft feature is ~1.2x10^40 erg/s. We infer an [OIII]/Soft-X-ray ratio in the range of ~200, consistent with the highest values measured in some of the clouds of NGC 4151. Overall, given the uncertainties, Hanny's Voorwerp appears to be a feature consistent with the ionization cone emission of nearby AGNs. We estimate an X-ray recombination time of 2x10^7 yr, longer than the [OIII] recombination time (~8000 yr). This suggests that extended soft X-ray components may be a better diagnostic of overall long-term activity, while detection of an [OIII] HV would point to a time-limited activity burst., Comment: ApJ in press

We address three major questions in astronomy, namely the detection of biosignatures on habitable exoplanets, the geophysics of exoplanets and cosmology. To achieve this goal, two requirements are needed. First a very large aperture to detect spectro-polarimetric and spatial features of faint objects such as exoplanets, and second a continuous monitoring to characterize the temporal behavior of exoplanets such as rotation period, meteorology and seasons. An Earth-based telescope is not suited for continuous monitoring and the atmosphere limits the ultimate angular resolution and spectro-polarimetrical domain. Moreover, a space telescope in orbit is limited in aperture, to perhaps 15 m over the next several decades. This is why we propose an OWL-class lunar telescope with a 50-100 m aperture for visible and infrared (IR) astronomy, based on ESO's Overwhelmingly Large Telescope concept, unachievable on Earth for technical issues such as wind stress that are not relevant for a lunar platform. It will be installed near the south pole of the Moon to allow continuous target monitoring. The low gravity of the Moon will facilitate its building and manoeuvring, compared to Earth-based telescopes. As a guaranteed by-product, such a large lunar telescope will allow Intensity Interferometric measurements when coupled with large Earth-based telescopes, leading to pico-second angular resolution., Comment: White Paper subitted to ESA's call for Voyage 2050

A recent ALMA study of the Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) NGC 2110 by Rosario et al. (2019) has reported a remarkable lack of CO 2-1 emission from the circumnuclear region, where optical lines and H2 emission are observed, leading to the suggestion of excitation of the molecular clouds by the AGN. Since interaction with X-ray photons could be the cause of this excitation, we have searched the archival Chandra data for corroborating evidence. We report an extra-nuclear ~1'' (~170 pc) feature found in the soft (<1.0 keV) Chandra data of the Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) NGC 2110. This feature is elongated to the north of the nucleus and its shape matches well that of the optical lines and H2 emission observed in this region, which is devoid of CO 2-1 emission. The Chandra image completes the emerging picture of a multi-phase circumnuclear medium excited by the X-rays from the AGN, with dense warm molecular clouds emitting in H2 but depleted of CO 2-1 emission., Comment: ApJ Letters - in press

We present ALMA rest-frame 230 GHz continuum and CO(2-1) line observations of the nearby Compton-thick Seyfert galaxy ESO428-G14, with angular resolution 0.7 arcsec (78 pc). We detect CO(2-1) emission from spiral arms and a circum-nuclear ring with 200 pc radius, and from a transverse gas lane with size of $\sim100$ pc, which crosses the nucleus and connects the two portions the circumnuclear ring. The molecular gas in the host galaxy is distributed in a rotating disk with intrinsic circular velocity $v_{rot}=135$ km/s, inclination $i=57$ deg, and dynamical mass $M_{dyn }=5\times 10^9~\rm M_{\odot}$ within a radius of $\sim 1$ kpc. In the inner 100 pc region CO is distributed in a equatorial bar, whose kinematics is highly perturbed and consistent with an inflow of gas towards the AGN. This inner CO bar overlaps with the most obscured, Compton-thick region seen in X-rays. We derive a column density of $\rm N(H_2) \approx 2\times10^{23}~ cm^{-2}$ in this region, suggesting that molecular gas may contribute significantly to the AGN obscuration. We detect a molecular outflow with a total outflow rate $\rm \dot M_{of}\approx 0.8~M_{\odot}/yr$, distributed along a bi-conical structure with size of $700$ pc on both sides of the AGN. The bi-conical outflow is also detected in the $\rm H_2$ emission line at 2.12 $\mu$m, which traces a warmer nuclear outflow located within 170 pc from the AGN. This suggests that the outflow cools with increasing distance from the AGN. We find that the hard X-ray emitting nuclear region mapped with Chandra is CO-deprived, but filled with warm molecular gas traced by $\rm H_2$ - thus confirming that the hard (3-6 keV) continuum and Fe K$\alpha$ emission are due to scattering from dense neutral clouds in the ISM., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We write in response to the call from the 2020 Decadal Survey to submit white papers illustrating the most pressing scientific questions in astrophysics for the coming decade. We propose exploration as the central question for the Decadal Committee's discussions.The history of astronomy shows that paradigm changing discoveries are not driven by well formulated scientific questions, based on the knowledge of the time. They were instead the result of the increase in discovery space fostered by new telescopes and instruments. An additional tool for increasing the discovery space is provided by the analysis and mining of the increasingly larger amount of archival data available to astronomers. Revolutionary observing facilities, and the state of the art astronomy archives needed to support these facilities, will open up the universe to new discovery. Here we focus on exploration for compact objects and multi messenger science. This white paper includes science examples of the power of the discovery approach, encompassing all the areas of astrophysics covered by the 2020 Decadal Survey.

We report a clumpy elongated feature found with deep Chandra ACIS high-resolution imaging of the Fe K{\alpha} line emission in the nuclear region of the Compton Thick Active Galactic Nucleus (CT AGN) galaxy NGC 5643. This feature extends for ~65 pc N-S. No corresponding feature is seen in the 3.0-6.0 keV continuum. The Fe K{\alpha} feature is spatially consistent with the N-S elongation found in the CO(2-1) high resolution imaging with ALMA (Alonso-Herrero et al 2018), but slightly more extended than the rotating molecular disk of r=26 pc indicated by the kinematics of the CO(2-1) line. The Chandra detection of a corresponding N-S structure in the neutral Fe K{\alpha} line, would argue for both CO and Fe K{\alpha} emission originating from the obscuring torus., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

We report the results of high-resolution subpixel imaging of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} line of the Compton Thick (CT) Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) ESO 428-G014, observed with Chandra ACIS. While the 3-4 keV emission is dominated by an extended component, a single nuclear point source is prominent in the 4-6 keV range. Instead, two peaks of similar intensity, separated by ~36 pc in projection on the plane of the sky are detected in the Fe K{\alpha} emission. The SE knot could be marginally associated with the heavily obscured hard continuum source. We discuss four possible interpretations of the nuclear morphology. (1) Given the bolometric luminosity and likely black hole (BH) mass of ESO 428-G014, we may be imaging two clumps of the CT obscuring torus in the Fe K{\alpha} line. (2) The Fe K{\alpha} knots may be connected with the fluorescent emission from the dusty bicone, or (3) with the light echo of a nuclear outburst. (4) We also explore the less likely possibility that we may be detecting the rare signature of merging nuclei. Considering the large-scale kpc-size extent of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} emission (Papers I and II), we conclude that the AGN in ESO 428-G014 has been active for at least 104 yrs. We present spatially resolved mass outflow rate measurements ($\dot M_{out}$) for the narrow line region of Markarian 34, the nearest Compton-thick type 2 quasar (QSO2). Spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and at Apache Point Observatory reveal complex kinematics, with distinct signatures of outflow and rotation within 2 kpc of the nucleus. Using multi-component photoionization models, we find that the outflow contains a total ionized gas mass of $M \approx 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$. Combining this with the kinematics yields a peak outflow rate of $\dot M_{out} \approx 2.0 \pm 0.4~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 470 pc from the nucleus, with a spatially integrated kinetic energy of $E \approx 1.4 \times 10^{55}$ erg. These outflows are more energetic than those observed in Mrk 573 and NGC 4151, supporting a correlation between luminosity and outflow strength even though they have similar peak outflow rates. The mix of rotational and outflowing components suggests that spatially resolved observations are required to determine accurate outflow parameters in systems with complex kinematics. We have analyzed the deep Chandra observation (~155 ks) of the Compton Thick Active Galactic Nucleus (CT AGN) ESO 428-G014, to study in detail the morphology of the diffuse X-ray emission in the inner ~500 pc radius region. Comparing different X-ray energy bands we find localized differences in the absorbing column and in the emission processes. Collisional ionization may be prevalent in the area of most intense optical line emission (Halpha and [OIII]). There is a good correspondence between optical line, radio continuum and soft (<3 keV) X-ray features, consistent with simulations of jet/molecular disk interactions. At all energies >3 keV, the extended emission in the central 1".5 (170 pc) radius circumnuclear region amounts to ~70-30% of the contribution of a point source in that area (or 40-25% of the total counts in the region). Within a 5" radius, the contribution from extended emission overcomes that from a nuclear point source in the 3-4 keV band. This extended emission suggests scattering of nuclear photons by dense molecular clouds in the inner galactic disk of ESO 428-G014. Its presence may adversely bias the torus modeling of spectra from X-ray telescopes with inferior angular resolution than Chandra, such as NuSTAR and XMM-Newton., Comment: ApJ, in press

It has been known for decades that the observed number of baryons in the local universe falls about 30-40% short of the total number of baryons predicted by Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis, as inferred from density fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background and seen during the first 2-3 billion years of the universe in the so called Lyman-alpha Forest. A theoretical solution to this paradox locates the missing baryons in the hot and tenuous filamentary gas between galaxies, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium. However, it is difficult to detect them there because the largest by far constituent of this gas - hydrogen - is mostly ionized and therefore almost invisible in far-ultraviolet spectra with typical signal-to-noise ratios. Indeed, despite the large observational efforts, only a few marginal claims of detection have been made so far. Here we report observations of two absorbers of highly ionized oxygen (OVII) in the high signal-to-noise-ratio X-ray spectrum of a quasar at redshift >0.4. These absorbers show no variability over a 2-year timescale and have no associated cold absorption, making the assumption that they originate from the quasar's intrinsic outflow or the host galaxy's interstellar medium implausible. The OVII systems lie in regions characterized by large (x4 compared to average) galaxy over-densities and their number (down to the sensitivity threshold of our data), agrees well with numerical simulation predictions for the long-sought warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). We present a deep Chandra spectral and spatial study of the kpc-scale diffuse X-ray emission of the Compton thick (CT) AGN ESO428-G014. The entire spectrum is best fit with composite photoionization + thermal models. The diffuse emission is more extended at the lower energies (<3 keV). The smaller extent of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} profiles imply that the optically thicker clouds responsible for this scattering may be relatively more prevalent closer to the nucleus. These clouds must not prevent soft ionizing X-rays from the AGN escaping to larger radii, in order to have photoionized ISM at larger radii. This suggests that at smaller radii there may be a larger population of molecular clouds to scatter the hard X-rays, as in the Milky Way. The diffuse emission is also significantly extended in the cross-cone direction, where the AGN emission would be mostly obscured by the torus in the standard AGN model. Our results suggest that the transmission of the obscuring region in the cross-cone direction is ~10% than in the cone-direction. In the 0.3-1.5 keV band, the ratio of cross-cone to cone photons increases to ~84\%, suggesting an additional soft diffuse emission component, disjoint from the AGN. This could be due to hot ISM trapped in the potential of the galaxy. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [O III] {\lambda}5007 emission for a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12), luminous Type 2 quasars (QSO2s), which we use to measure the extent and kinematics of their AGN-ionized gas. We find the size of the observed [O III] regions scale with luminosity in comparison to nearby, less luminous Seyfert galaxies and radially outflowing kinematics to exist in all targets. We report an average maximum outflow radius of $\sim$600 pc, with gas continuing to be kinematically influenced by the central AGN out to an average radius of $\sim$1130 pc. These findings question the effectiveness of AGN being capable of clearing material from their host bulge in the nearby universe and suggest that disruption of gas by AGN activity may prevent star formation without requiring evacuation. Additionally, we find a dichotomy in our targets when comparing [O III] radial extent and nuclear FWHM, where QSO2s with compact [O III] morphologies typically possess broader nuclear emission-lines., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present two-dimensional maps of emission-line fluxes and kinematics, as well as of the stellar kinematics of the central few kpc of five bright nearby Seyfert galaxies -- Mrk\,6, Mrk\,79, Mrk\,348, Mrk\,607 and Mrk\,1058 -- obtained from observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU) on the Gemini North Telescope. The data cover the inner 3\farcs5$\times$5\farcs0 -- corresponding to physical scales in the range 0.6$\times$0.9 to 1.5$\times$2.2\,kpc$^2$ -- at a spatial resolution ranging from 110 to 280 pc with a spectral coverage of 4300 -- 7100\,\AA\ and velocity resolution of $\approx$ 90\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The gas excitation is Seyfert like everywhere but show excitation, but show excitation gradients that are correlated with the gas kinematics, reddening and/or the gas density. The gas kinematics show in all cases two components: a rotation one similar to that observed in the stellar velocity field, and an outflow component. In the case of Mrk607, the gas is counter-rotating relative to the stars. Enhanced gas velocity dispersion is observed in association to the outflows according to two patterns: at the locations of the highest outflow velocities along the ionization axis or perpendicularly to it in a strip centered at the nucleus that we attribute to an equatorial outflow. Bipolar outflows are observed in Mrk\,348 and Mrk\,79, while in Mrk\,1058 only the blueshifted part is clearly observed, while in the cases of Mrk\,6 and Mrk\,607 the geometry of the outflow needs further constraints from modeling to be presented in a forthcoming study, where the mass flow rate and powers will also be obtained., Comment: 20 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We report the results of intensive X-ray, UV and optical monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 with Swift. There is no intrinsic flux-related spectral change in the the variable components in any band with small apparent variations due only to contamination by a second constant component, possibly a (hard) reflection component in the X-rays and the (red) host galaxy in the UV/optical bands. Relative to the shortest wavelength band, UVW2, the lags of the other UV and optical bands are mostly in agreement with the predictions of reprocessing of high energy emission from an accretion disc. The U-band lag is, however, far larger than expected, almost certainly because of reprocessed Balmer continuum emission from the more distant broad line region gas. The UVW2 band is well correlated with the X-rays but lags by ~6x more than expected if the UVW2 results from reprocessing of X-rays on the accretion disc. However, if the lightcurves are filtered to remove variations on timescales >5d, the lag approaches the expectation from disc reprocessing. MEMEcho analysis shows that direct X-rays can be the driver of most of the variations in the UV/optical bands as long as the response functions for those bands all have long tails (up to 10d) in addition to a strong peak (from disc reprocessing) at short lag (<1d). We interpret the tails as due to reprocessing from the surrounding gas. Comparison of X-ray to UVW2 and UVW2 to V-band lags for 4 AGN, including NGC 4593, shows that all have UVW2 to V-band lags which exceed the expectations from disc resprocessing by factor < 2. However the X-ray to UVW2 lags are, mostly, in greater excess from the expectations from disc reprocessing and differ between AGN. The largest excess is in NGC 4151.
