Through unprecedented scientific progress and technical feats genomics has rushed into the clinical arena. While the recent explosion of knowledge and functional indications for genomic information bring great potential to improve care through the development of clinical applications, the necessary evidence thresholds for making care decisions and other professional guidelines remain to be developed. Intrinsic to considering the necessary practices and infrastructure for implementing genomic medicine is a robust consideration of the relevant ethics, policies, and social considerations to promote and sustain the credibility of genomic medicine’s potential and the public’s confidence in and acceptance of that potential. This chapter explores the high-level policy and ethics issues influencing the development of genomic medicine during the current transition between discovery and knowledge application, with an emphasis on issues for clinicians to consider.
