1. Li3BN2 as a Transition Metal Free, High Capacity Cathode for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract

Li3BN2 is investigated for the first time as a transition metal free, high capacity cathode material for Li-ion batteries. It is shown that α-Li3BN2 can exhibit a specific capacity of 890 mA h g−1 with the charge storage mechanism associated with the valence state change of N ions in the BN2 anion. The specific capacity demonstrated in this study is the highest one ever reported in literature for an intercalation-type cathode material. Further, using the valence state change of N ions as a charge storage mechanism opens the door for designing additional high performance, transition metal free electrodes in the future.

Abstract

This article discusses the potential use of the lipophilic statin atorvastatin to prevent endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) in congenital heart defects. EFE is regulated through the TGF-ß pathway via endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in the endocardium. The study found that atorvastatin treatment reduced EndMT and increased the expression of the zing finger protein Krüppel-like factor 2 (KLF2), which protects the vascular endothelium. In an animal model, atorvastatin treatment resulted in a decrease in EFE thickness and myocardial infiltration. These findings suggest that upregulation of KLF2 with atorvastatin could be a potential treatment approach for patients with EFE. [Extracted from the article]

12. Periplasmic stress contributes to a tradeoff between protein secretion and cell growth in E. Coli Nissile

Abstract

Maximizing protein secretion is an important target in the design of engineered living systems. In this paper, we characterize a tradeoff between cell growth and per cell protein secretion in the curli biofilm secretion system of E Coli Nissile 1917. Initial characterization using 24-hour continuous growth and protein production monitoring confirms decreased growth rates at high induction leading to a local maximum in total protein production at intermediate induction. Propidium iodide staining at the endpoint indicates that cellular death is a dominant cause of growth reduction. Assaying variants with combinatorial constructs of inner and outer membrane secretion tags, we find that diminished growth at high production is specific to secretory variants associated with accumulation of protein containing the outer membrane transport tag in the periplasmic space. RNA sequencing experiments indicate upregulation of known periplasmic stress response genes in the highly secreting variant, further implicating periplasmic stress in the growth-secretion tradeoff. Overall, these results motivate additional strategies for optimizing total protein production and longevity of secretory engineered living systems.

Abstract

We have developed an imaging system, the Fluorescence Imager (FI), for detecting fluorescence signals from sparse microorganisms and biofilms during autonomous rover exploration. The fluorescence signals arise both from naturally occurring chromophores, such as chlorophyll of cyanobacteria and lichens, and from fluorescent probes applied to soil and rocks. Daylight imaging has been accomplished by a novel use of a high-powered flashlamp synchronized to a CCD camera. The fluorescent probes are cell permanent stains that have extremely low intrinsic fluorescence (quantum yields less than 0.01) and a large fluorescence enhancement (quantum yields greater than 0.4) when bound to the target. Each probe specifically targets either carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids or membrane lipids, the four classes of macromolecules found in terrestrial life. The intent of the probes is to interrogate the environment for surface and endolithic life forms.
