Search

Characterizing the physical conditions (density, temperature, ionization state, metallicity, etc) of the interstellar medium is critical to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies. Here we present a multi-line study of the interstellar medium in the host galaxy of a quasar at z~6.4, i.e., when the universe was 840 Myr old. This galaxy is one of the most active and massive objects emerging from the dark ages, and therefore represents a benchmark for models of the early formation of massive galaxies. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array to target an ensemble of tracers of ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, namely the fine-structure lines: [OIII] 88$\mu$m, [NII] 122$\mu$m, [CII] 158$\mu$m, and [CI] 370$\mu$m and the rotational transitions of CO(7-6), CO(15-14), CO(16-15), and CO(19-18); OH 163.1$\mu$m and 163.4$\mu$m; and H$_2$O 3(0,3)-2(1,2), 3(3,1)-4(0,4), 3(3,1)-3(2,2), 4(0,4)-3(1,3), 4(3,2)-4(2,3). All the targeted fine-structure lines are detected, as are half of the targeted molecular transitions. By combining the associated line luminosities, the constraints on the dust temperature from the underlying continuum emission, and predictions from photoionization models of the interstellar medium, we find that the ionized phase accounts for about one third of the total gaseous mass budget, and is responsible for half of the total [CII] emission. It is characterized by high density (n~180 cm$^{-3}$), typical of HII regions. The spectral energy distribution of the photoionizing radiation is comparable to that emitted by B-type stars. Star formation also appears to drive the excitation of the molecular medium. We find marginal evidence for outflow-related shocks in the dense molecular phase, but not in other gas phases. Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. This data will lead to better constraints on quasar lifetimes and obscuration fractions at high redshift, which in turn will help probe the seed mass and formation redshift of supermassive black holes., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

The last few years have seen a true Golden Age for the discovery and characterization of luminous quasars at the highest redshifts (z>5, within 1Gyr from the Big Bang, i.e. in the Epoch of Reionization); ~10% of such quasars are classified as radio-loud, i.e. they show powerful radio-jets. The interaction between these jets and the interstellar medium in their host galaxies is thought to play a crucial role in the supermassive black hole/galaxy (co-)evolution. However, very little have been known so far about this interaction at high-z, due to the lack of (sub)-mm observations of such radio-loud quasars. Here, we present new ALMA observations of the host galaxies of six radio-loud quasars at z>5, aimed at recovering their dust emission and their [CII] emission line in the rest-frame far-infrared. We show that these galaxies already host large dust reservoirs and are forming stars at rates>~30 Msun/yrs. We compare their far-infrared and [CII] emission line properties with those of radio-quiet quasars at comparable redshifts, in order to highlight any potential star formation enhancement/suppression from the radio jets. Lastly, we search for potential gas-rich galaxies surrounding these radio-loud quasars, as expected from theoretical predictions.

The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. When accounting for the CIV blueshift, we find that the rest-frame UV emission-line flux ratios do not correlate appreciably with the black hole mass or bolometric luminosity., MNRAS accepted, 24 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables

We investigate the molecular gas content of z~6 quasar host galaxies using the IRAM / Northern Extended Millimeter Array. We target the 3mm dust continuum, and the line emission from CO(6-5), CO(7-6), [CI]2-1 in 10 infra-red-luminous quasars that have been previously studied in their 1mm dust continuum and [CII] line emission. We detect CO(7-6) at various degrees of significance in all the targeted sources, thus doubling the number of such detections in z~6 quasars. The 3mm to 1mm flux density ratios are consistent with a modified black body spectrum with a dust temperature $T_{dust}$~47 K and an optical depth $\tau_{\nu}$=0.2 at the [CII] frequency. Our study provides us with four independent ways to estimate the molecular gas mass, $M_{H2}$, in the targeted quasars. This allows us to set constraints on various parameters used in the derivation of molecular gas mass estimates, such as the mass per luminosity ratios $\alpha_{CO}$ and $\alpha_{[CII]}$, the gas-to-dust ratio $\delta_{g/d}$, and the carbon abundance [C]/H2. Leveraging either on the dust, CO, [CI], or [CII] emission yields mass estimates of the entire sample in the range $M_{H2}$~$10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. We compare the observed luminosities of dust, [CII], [CI], and CO(7-6) with predictions from photo-dissociation and X-ray dominated regions. We find that the former provide better model fits to our data, assuming that the bulk of the emission arises from dense ($n_H>10^4$ cm$^{-3}$) clouds with a column density $N_{H}$~$10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, exposed to a radiation field with intensity $G_0$~$10^3$ (in Habing units). Our analysis reiterates the presence of massive reservoirs of molecular gas fueling star formation and nuclear accretion in $z$~6 quasar host galaxies. It also highlights the power of combined 3mm and 1mm observations for quantitative studies of the dense gas content in massive galaxies at cosmic dawn., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We present a multi-line survey of the interstellar medium (ISM) in two $z>6$ quasar (QSO) host galaxies, PJ231-20 ($z=6.59$) and PJ308-21 ($z=6.23$), and their two companion galaxies. Observations were carried out using the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We targeted eleven transitions including atomic fine structure lines (FSLs) and molecular lines: [NII]$_{\rm 205\mu m}$, [CI]$_{\rm 369\mu m}$, CO ($J_{\rm up} = 7, 10, 15, 16$), H$_2$O $3_{12}-2_{21}$, $3_{21}-3_{12}$, $3_{03}-2_{12}$, and the OH$_{\rm 163\mu m}$ doublet. The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum samples the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the respective dust emission. By combining this information with our earlier ALMA [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ observations, we explore the effects of star formation and black hole feedback on the galaxies' ISM using the CLOUDY radiative transfer models. We estimate dust masses, spectral indexes, IR luminosities, and star-formation rates from the FIR continuum. The analysis of the FSLs indicates that the [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ and [CI]$_{\rm 369\mu m}$ emission arises predominantly from the neutral medium in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We find that line deficits are in agreement with those of local luminous infrared galaxies. The CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), reveal significant high-$J$ CO excitation in both quasar hosts. Our CO SLED modeling of the quasar PJ231-20 shows that PDRs dominate the molecular mass and CO luminosities for $J_{\rm up}\le 7$, while the $J_{\rm up}\ge10$ CO emission is likely driven by X-ray dissociation regions produced by the active galactic nucleus (AGN) at the very center of the quasar host [abridged]., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the first results from the Quasar Feedback Survey, a sample of 42 z10^42.1 ergs/s) with moderate radio luminosities (i.e. L(1.4GHz)>10^23.4 W/Hz; median L(1.4GHz)=5.9x10^23 W/Hz). Using high spatial resolution (~0.3-1 arcsec), 1.5-6 GHz radio images from the Very Large Array, we find that 67 percent of the sample have spatially extended radio features, on ~1-60 kpc scales. The radio sizes and morphologies suggest that these may be lower radio luminosity versions of compact, radio-loud AGN. By combining the radio-to-infrared excess parameter, spectral index, radio morphology and brightness temperature, we find radio emission in at least 57 percent of the sample that is associated with AGN-related processes (e.g. jets, quasar-driven winds or coronal emission). This is despite only 9.5-21 percent being classified as radio-loud using traditional criteria. The origin of the radio emission in the remainder of the sample is unclear. We find that both the established anti-correlation between radio size and the width of the [O III] line, and the known trend for the most [O III] luminous AGN to be associated with spatially-extended radio emission, also hold for our sample of moderate radio luminosity quasars. These observations add to the growing evidence of a connection between the radio emission and ionised gas in quasar host galaxies. X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using infrared and sub-millimeter observations. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray bolometric correction (the factor that converts from X-ray luminosity to bolometric luminosity) decreases with increasing $L_{\rm bol}$, and that the UV/optical-to-X-ray ratio, $\alpha_{\rm ox}$, strongly correlates with $L_{\rm 2500}$, and moderately correlates with $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ and blueshift of CIV emission lines. These correlations are consistent with those found in lower-$z$ quasars, indicating quasar accretion physics does not evolve with redshift. We also find that $L_{\rm IR}$ does not correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ in these luminous distant quasars, suggesting that the ratio of the SMBH growth rate and their host galaxy growth rate in these early luminous quasars are different from those of local galaxies. A joint spectral analysis of the X-ray detected $z>6.5$ quasars yields an average X-ray photon index of $ \Gamma=2.32^{+0.31}_{-0.30}$, steeper than that of low-$z$ quasars. By comparing it with the $\Gamma-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ relation, we conclude that the steepening of $\Gamma$ for quasars at $z>6.5$ is mainly driven by their higher Eddington ratios., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present deep (265 ks) Chandra X-ray observations of PSO J352.4034$-$15.3373, a quasar at z=5.831 that, with a radio-to-optical flux ratio of R>1000, is one of the radio-loudest quasars in the early universe and is the only quasar with observed extended radio jets of kpc-scale at $z \gtrsim 6$. Modeling the X-ray spectrum of the quasar with a power law, we find a best fit of $\Gamma = 1.99^{+0.29}_{-0.28}$, leading to an X-ray luminosity of $L_{2-10} = 1.26^{+0.45}_{-0.33} \times 10^{45}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ and an X-ray to UV brightness ratio of $\alpha_{\rm OX} = -1.36 \pm 0.11$. We identify a diffuse structure 50 kpc (${\sim}8^{\prime\prime}$) to the NW of the quasar along the jet axis that corresponds to a $3\sigma$ enhancement in the angular density of emission and can be ruled out as a background fluctuation with a probability of P=0.9985. While with few detected photons the spectral fit of the structure is uncertain, we find that it has a luminosity of $L_{2-10}\sim10^{44}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. These observations therefore potentially represent the most distant quasar jet yet seen in X-rays. We find no evidence for excess X-ray emission where the previously-reported radio jets are seen (which have an overall linear extent of $0.^{\prime\prime}28$), and a bright X-ray point source located along the jet axis to the SE is revealed by optical and NIR imaging to not be associated with the quasar., Comment: 16 pages, 7 Figures. Constraints on the time-scales of quasar activity are key to understanding the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), quasar triggering mechanisms, and possible feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, observational estimates of this so-called quasar lifetime are highly uncertain (t_Q~10^4-10^9 yr), because most methods are indirect and involve many model-dependent assumptions. Direct evidence of earlier activity is gained from the higher ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the quasar environs, observable as enhanced Ly$\alpha$ transmission in the so-called proximity zone. Due to the ~30 Myr equilibration time-scale of HeII in the z~3 IGM, the size of the HeII proximity zone depends on the time the quasar had been active before our observation t_on30 Myr that does not depend on quasar luminosity, black hole mass, or Eddington ratio. These results point to episodic quasar activity over a long duty cycle, but do not rule out substantial SMBH growth during phases of radiative inefficiency or obscuration., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Radio sources at the highest redshifts can provide unique information on the first massive galaxies and black holes, the densest primordial environments, and the epoch of reionization. The number of astronomical objects identified at z>6 has increased dramatically over the last few years, but previously only three radio-loud (R2500>10) sources had been reported at z>6, with the most distant being a quasar at z=6.18. Here we present the discovery and characterization of P172+18, a radio-loud quasar at z=6.823. This source has an MgII-based black hole mass of ~3x10^8 Msun and is one of the fastest accreting quasars, consistent with super-Eddington accretion. The ionized region around the quasar is among the largest measured at these redshifts, implying an active phase longer than the average lifetime of the z>6 quasar population. From archival data, there is evidence that its 1.4 GHz emission has decreased by a factor of two over the last two decades. The quasar's radio spectrum between 1.4 and 3.0 GHz is steep (alpha=-1.31) and has a radio-loudness parameter R2500~90. A second steep radio source (alpha=-0.83) of comparable brightness to the quasar is only 23.1" away (~120 kpc at z=6.82; projection probability, submitted to ApJ on Nov 29, 2020; accepted on Jan 31, 2021. Due to an error in the analysis of the ALMA data, the [C II] line fluxes Fline in 6 out of the 13 analyzed quasars were underestimated, and thus also based the inferred star formation rate (SFR) on the [C II] emission. We corrected these values and show the updated measurements for the six affected quasars in the corrected Table 2. The dust continuum estimates and their derived quantities were not affected by the error. Additionally, the observed peak frequency of the [C II] emission line nobs and thus the inferred systemic redshifts of the quasars were mildly offset, causing a shift of Dnobs ? 0.02 GHz and - Dzsub mm ? 0.0005. The derived proximity zone sizes were hence affected byDRp ? 0.04 pMpc. All updated values are shown in the corrected Tables 2 and 4. These changes did not affect any of the conclusions of the paper, nor did the figures in the paper change in any noticeable way. Furthermore, since the publication of our paper the offset between the peak of the Mg II emission line and the systemic redshift derived from submillimeter emission lines estimated by Schindler et al. (2020) changed slightly in their published version compared to the preliminary value we had used. Thus we use the now published velocity offset of Dv(Mg II-[C II]) = - - 391+ km s- 455 256 1 to estimate the systemic redshifts of the three quasars in our sample, for which no submillimeter data are available and therefore the redshift estimate is based on the Mg II emission. This resulted in minor changes of Dz ? 0.001, which are updated in Table 4.

We characterize the Ly$\alpha$ halo and absorption systems toward PSO J083+11, a unique $z=6.3401$ weak-line quasar, using Gemini/GNIRS, Magellan/FIRE, and VLT/MUSE data. Strong absorptions by hydrogen and several metal lines (e.g., CII, MgII, and OI) are discovered in the spectrum, which indicates the presence of: (i) a proximate sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ (sub-DLA) system at $z=6.314$ and (ii) a MgII absorber at $z=2.2305$. To describe the observed damping wing signal, we model the Ly$\alpha$ absorption with a combination of a sub-DLA with the neutral hydrogen column density of $\log N_\mathrm{HI} = 20.03 \pm 0.30$ cm$^{-2}$ and absorption from the intergalactic medium with a neutral fraction of around 10 percent. The sub-DLA toward PSO J083+11 has an abundance ratio of [C/O] $=-0.04 \pm 0.33$ and metallicity of [O/H] $=-2.19 \pm 0.44$, similar to those of low-redshift metal-poor DLAs. These measurements suggest that the sub-DLA might truncate PSO J083+11's proximity zone size and complicate the quasar lifetime measurement. However, this quasar shows no sign of a Ly$\alpha$ halo in the MUSE data cube, where the estimated $1\sigma$ limit of surface brightness is $2.76 \times 10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ at aperture size of 1 arcsecond, or equivalent to a Ly$\alpha$ luminosity of $\leq 43.46$ erg s$^{-1}$. This non-detection, while being only weak independent evidence on its own, is at least consistent with a young quasar scenario, as expected for a quasar with a short accretion timescale., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, and 1 table. We present a comparison of the interstellar medium traced by [CII] (ALMA), and ionised halo gas traced by Lya (MUSE), in and around QSO host galaxies at z~6. To date, 18 QSOs at this redshift have been studied with both MUSE and high-resolution ALMA imaging; of these, 8 objects display a Lya halo. Using datacubes matched in velocity resolution, we compare and contrast the spatial and kinematic information of the Lya halos and the host galaxies' [CII] (and dust-continuum) emission. We find that the Lya halos extend typically 3-30 times beyond the interstellar medium of the host galaxies. The majority of the Lya halos do not show ordered motion in their velocity fields, whereas most of the [CII] velocity fields do. In those cases where a velocity gradient can be measured in Lya, the kinematics do not align with those derived from the [CII] emission. This implies that the Lya emission is not tracing the outskirts of a large rotating disk that is a simple extension of the central galaxy seen in [CII] emission. It rather suggests that the kinematics of the halo gas are decoupled from those of the central galaxy. Given the scattering nature of Lya, these results need to be confirmed with JWST IFU observations that can constrain the halo kinematics further using the non-resonant Ha line., Published in ApJ

We report new measurements of the intergalactic medium (IGM) Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ effective optical depth at $5.35.3$, $\tau\propto(1+z)^{8.6\pm1.0}$. We then estimate the observed Ly$\beta$ effective optical depth using Ly$\beta$ forests and convert them to Ly$\alpha$ optical depth for comparison, which provides additional constraints on the evolution of the IGM optical depth. The Ly$\beta$-based measurements are generally in agreement with the best-fit evolution obtained from Ly$\alpha$ forests. Using this new sample, we identify 389 Ly$\alpha$ and 50 Ly$\beta$ transmission spikes at $5.5, Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the discovery of PSO J083.8371+11.8482, a weak emission line quasar with extreme star formation rate at $z=6.3401$. This quasar was selected from Pan-STARRS1, UHS, and unWISE photometric data. Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy follow-up indicates a MgII-based black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH}=\left(2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\right)\times10^9~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $L_\mathrm{bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}=0.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, in line with actively accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at $z\gtrsim6$. HST imaging sets strong constraint on lens-boosting, showing no relevant effect on the apparent emission. The quasar is also observed as a pure point-source with no additional emission component. The broad line region (BLR) emission is intrinsically weak and not likely caused by an intervening absorber. We found rest-frame equivalent widths of EW(Ly$\alpha$+NV) $=5.7\pm0.7$ Angstrom, EW(CIV) $\leq5.8$ Angstrom (3-sigma upper limit), and EW(MgII) $=8.7\pm0.7$ Angstrom. A small proximity zone size ($R_\mathrm{p}=1.2\pm0.4$ pMpc) indicates a lifetime of only $t_\mathrm{Q}=10^{3.4\pm0.7}$ years from the last quasar phase ignition. ALMA shows extended [CII] emission with a mild velocity gradient. The inferred far-infrared luminosity ($L_\mathrm{FIR}=(1.2\pm0.1)\times10^{13}\,L_\odot$) is one of the highest among all known quasar hosts at $z\gtrsim6$. Dust and [CII] emissions put a constraint on the star formation rate of SFR $=900-4900~M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$, similar to that of hyper-luminous infrared galaxy. Considering the observed quasar lifetime and BLR formation timescale, the weak-line profile in the quasar spectrum is most likely caused by a BLR which is not yet fully formed rather than continuum boosting by gravitational lensing or a soft continuum due to super-Eddington accretion., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

In a multi-wavelength survey of $13$ quasars at $5.8\lesssim z\lesssim6.5$, that were pre-selected to be potentially young, we find five objects with extremely small proximity zone sizes that may imply UV-luminous quasar lifetimes of $\lesssim 100,000$ years. Proximity zones are regions of enhanced transmitted flux in the vicinity of the quasars that are sensitive to the quasars' lifetimes because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to their radiation. We combine sub-mm observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), as well as deep optical and near-infrared spectra from medium-resolution spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and on the Keck telescopes, in order to identify and characterize these new young quasars, which provide valuable clues about the accretion behavior of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early universe, and pose challenges on current black hole formation models to explain the rapid formation of billion solar mass black holes. We measure the quasars' systemic redshifts, black hole masses, Eddington ratios, emission line luminosities, and star formation rates of their host galaxies. Combined with previous results we estimate the fraction of young objects within the high-redshift quasar population at large to be $5\%\lesssim f_{\rm young}\lesssim 10\%$. One of the young objects, PSO J158-14, shows a very bright dust continuum flux ($F_{\rm cont}=3.46\pm 0.02\,\rm mJy$), indicating a highly star-bursting host galaxy with a star formation rate of approximately $1420\,M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a luminous quasar, J1007+2115 at $z=7.515$ ("P\={o}niu\={a}'ena"), from our wide-field reionization-era quasar survey. J1007+2115 is the second quasar now known at $z>7.5$, deep into the reionization epoch. The quasar is powered by a $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH), based on its broad MgII emission-line profile from Gemini and Keck near-IR spectroscopy. The SMBH in J1007+2115 is twice as massive as that in quasar J1342+0928 at $z=7.54$, the current quasar redshift record holder. The existence of such a massive SMBH just 700 million years after the Big Bang significantly challenges models of the earliest SMBH growth. Model assumptions of Eddington-limited accretion and a radiative efficiency of 0.1 require a seed black hole of $\gtrsim 10^{4}$ $M_{\odot}$ at $z=30$. This requirement suggests either a massive black hole seed as a result of direct collapse or earlier periods of rapid black hole growth with hyper-Eddington accretion and/or a low radiative efficiency. We measure the damping wing signature imprinted by neutral hydrogen absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on J1007+2115's Ly$\alpha$ line profile, and find that it is weaker than that of J1342+0928 and two other $z\gtrsim7$ quasars. We estimate an IGM volume-averaged neutral fraction $\langle x\rm_{HI}\rangle=0.39^{+0.22}_{-0.13}$. This range of values suggests a patchy reionization history toward different IGM sightlines. We detect the 158 $\mu$m [C II] emission line in J1007+2115 with ALMA; this line centroid yields a systemic redshift of $z=7.5149\pm0.0004$ and indicates a star formation rate of $\sim210$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ in its host galaxy., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press

Luminous $z\ge7$ quasars provide direct probes of the evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of reionization (EoR). The Ly$\alpha$ damping wing absorption imprinted by neutral hydrogen in the IGM can be detected in a single EoR quasar spectrum, allowing the measurement of the IGM neutral fraction towards that line of sight. However, damping wing features have only been detected in two $z>7$ quasars in previous studies. In this paper, we present new high quality optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the $z=7.00$ quasar DES J025216.64--050331.8 obtained with Keck/NIRES and Gemini/GMOS. By using the MgII single-epoch virial method, we find that it hosts a $\rm (1.39\pm0.16) \times10^{9} ~M_\odot$ SMBH accreting at an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}=0.7\pm0.1$, consistent with the values seen in other luminous $z\sim 7$ quasars. Furthermore, the Ly$\alpha$ region of the spectrum exhibits a strong damping wing absorption feature. The lack of associated metal absorption in the quasar spectrum indicates that this absorption is imprinted by a neutral IGM. Using a state-of-the-art model developed by Davies et al., we measure a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction at $z=7$ of $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle = 0.70^{+0.20}_{-0.23} (^{+0.28}_{-0.48})$ within 68% (95%) confidence intervals when marginalizing over quasar lifetimes of $10^3\le t_{\rm Q}\le10^8$ yr. We present deep (9 hours) Gemini-N/GNIRS near-infrared spectroscopic observations of ULAS J1342+0928, a luminous quasar at z=7.54. Various broad emission lines were detected, as well as the underlying continuum and iron forests over the rest-frame wavelength 970-2930A. There is a clear trend that higher-ionization emission lines show larger blueshifts with CIV1549 exhibiting 5510^{+240}_{-110} km s-1 blueshift with respect to the systematic redshift from the far-infrared [CII] 158um emission line. Those high ionization lines have wide profiles with FWHM more than 10000 km s-1. A modest blueshift of 340^{+110}_{-80} km s-1 is also seen in MgII, the lowest ionization line identified in the spectrum. The updated MgII-based black hole mass of M_BH=9.1_{-1.3}^{+1.4} x 10^8 M_sun and the Eddington ratio of L_bol/L_Edd=1.1_{-0.2}^{+0.2} confirm that ULAS J1342+0928 is powered by a massive and actively accreting black hole. There is no significant difference in the emission line ratios such as SiIV/CIV and AlIII/CIV when compared to lower-redshift quasars in a similar luminosity range, which suggests early metal pollution of the broad-line-region clouds. This trend also holds for the FeII/MgII line ratio, known as a cosmic clock that traces the iron enrichment in the early universe. Different iron templates and continuum fitting ranges were used to explore how the FeII/MgII measurement changes as a function of spectral modeling. We present deep Chandra observations of PSO J231.6576-20.8335, a quasar at redshift z = 6.59 with a nearby (∼8 proper kpc) companion galaxy. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observed both the quasar and companion to be bright in [C II], and the system has significant extended Lyα emission around the quasar, suggesting that a galaxy merger is ongoing. Unlike previous studies of two similar systems, and despite observing the system with Chandra for 140 ks, we do not detect the companion in X-rays. The quasar itself is detected, but only ${13.3}_{-3.7}^{+4.8}$ net counts are observed. From a basic spectral analysis, the X-ray spectrum of the quasar is soft (hardness ratio of ${ \mathcal H }{ \mathcal R }=-{0.60}_{-0.27}^{+0.17}$ , power-law index of ${\rm{\Gamma }}={2.6}_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ ), which results in a rest-frame X-ray luminosity comparable to other bright quasars ( ${L}_{2\mbox{--}10}={1.09}_{-0.70}^{+2.20}\times {10}^{45}\ \mathrm{erg}\ {{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ ) despite the faint observed X-ray flux. We highlight two possible interpretations of this result: the quasar has a steep value of Γ—potentially related to observed ongoing Eddington accretion—thereby pushing much of the emission out of our observed band, or the quasar has a more normal spectrum (Γ ∼ 2) but is therefore less X-ray luminous ( ${L}_{2\mbox{--}10}\sim 0.6\times {10}^{45}\ \mathrm{erg}\ {{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ ).

We present a study of the [CII] 158micron line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission of 27 quasar host galaxies at z~6, traced by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at a spatial resolution of ~1 physical kpc. The [CII] emission in the bright, central regions of the quasars have sizes of 1.0-4.8kpc. The dust continuum emission is typically more compact than [CII]. We find that 13/27 quasars (approximately one-half) have companion galaxies in the field, at projected separations of 3-90kpc. The position of dust emission and the Gaia-corrected positions of the central accreting black holes are cospatial (typical offsets 6 quasar hosts reside. Some outliers with offsets of ~500pc can be linked to disturbed morphologies, most likely due to ongoing or recent mergers. We find no correlation between the central brightness of the FIR emission and the bolometric luminosity of the accreting black hole. The FIR-derived star-formation rate densities (SFRDs) in the host galaxies peak at the galaxies' centers, at typical values between 100 and 1000 M_sun/yr/kpc^2. These values are below the Eddington limit for star formation, but similar to those found in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The SFRDs drop toward larger radii by an order of magnitude. Likewise, the [CII]/FIR luminosity ratios of the quasar hosts are lowest in their centers (few x10^-4) and increase by a factor of a few toward the galaxies' outskirts, consistent with resolved studies of lower-redshift sources., 24 pages, 11 figures. We present MUSE observations of the gas-rich major-merger BR1202-0725 at z~4.7, which constitutes one of the most overdense fields known in the early Universe. We utilise these data in conjunction with existing ALMA observations to compare and contrast the spatially resolved ionised- and cool-gas content of this system which hosts a quasar (QSO), a sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG), the two known optical companions ("LAE1", "LAE2"), and an additional companion discovered in this work "LAE3" just 5 arcsec to the North of the QSO. We find that QSO BR1202-0725 exhibits a large Ly$\alpha$ halo, covering $\approx55$ pkpc on-sky at surface brightness levels of SB$\geq$1E-17 erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$. In contrast, the SMG, of similar far-infrared luminosity and star formation rate (SFR), does not exhibit such a Ly$\alpha$ halo. The QSO's halo exhibits high velocity widths ($\sim1000$ km/s) but the gas motion is to some extent kinematically coupled with the previously observed [CII] bridge between the QSO and the SMG. We note that the object known in the literature as LAE2 shows no local peak of Ly$\alpha$ emission, rather, its profile is more consistent with being part of the QSO's extended Ly$\alpha$ halo. The properties of LAE3 are typical of high-redshift LAEs; we measure F$_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}$(LAE3) = $0.24\pm$0.03E-16 erg/s/cm$^2$, corresponding to SFR$_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}\approx\ $5.0$\pm$0.5 M${_\odot}$/yr. The velocity width is $\Delta v$(LAE3) $\approx 400$ km/s, and equivalent width EW$_0$(Ly$\alpha_{\,5\sigma}^{\,lim})\geq 34.05$ $\\A$, consistent with star formation being the primary driver of Ly$\alpha$ emission. We also note a coherent absorption feature at $\sim -400$km/s in spectra from at least three objects; the QSO, LAE1 and "LAE2" which could imply the presence of an expanding neutral gas shell with an extent of at least $24$ pkpc., Comment: 23 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Quasars at early redshifts ($z > 6$) with companion galaxies offer unique insights into the growth and evolution of the first supermassive black holes. Here, we report on a 150 ks Chandra observation of PSO J308.0416$-$21.2339, a $z=6.23$ quasar with a merging companion galaxy identified in [C II] and rest-frame UV emission. With $72.3^{+9.6}_{-8.6}$ net counts, we find that PSO J308.0416$-$21.2339 is powerful ($L_X = 2.31^{+1.14}_{-0.76} \times 10^{45}\ \textrm{erg}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}\,\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ in rest-frame $2.0-10.0$ keV) yet soft (spectral power-law index $\Gamma=2.39^{+0.37}_{-0.36}$ and optical-to-X-ray slope $\alpha_{\rm OX} = -1.41 \pm 0.11$). In addition, we detect three hard-energy photons $2.''0$ to the west of the main quasar, cospatial with the brightest UV emission of the merging companion. As no soft-energy photons are detected in the same area, this is potentially indicative of a highly-obscured source. With conservative assumptions, and accounting for both background fluctuations and the extended wings of the quasar's emission, these photons only have a probability $P=0.021$ of happening by chance. If confirmed by deeper observations, this system is the first high redshift quasar and companion individually detected in X-rays and is likely a dual AGN., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, published in the Astrophysical Journal. We present kpc-scale ALMA and HST imaging of the quasar PJ308-21 at $z$=$6.2342$, tracing dust, gas (via the [CII] 158 $��$m line) and young stars. At a resolution of $\sim0.3''$ ($\approx1.7$ kpc), the system is resolved over $>4''$ ($>$20 kpc). In particular, it features a main component, identified to be the quasar host galaxy, centered on the accreting supermassive black hole; and two other extended components on the West and East side, one redshifted and the other blueshifted relative to the quasar. The [CII] emission of the entire system stretches over $>$1500 km/s along the line of sight. All the components of the system are observed in dust, [CII], and rest-frame UV emission. The inferred [CII] luminosities [(0.9-4.6)$\times 10^9$ L$_\odot$], dust luminosities [(0.15-2.6)$\times10^{12}$ L$_\odot$], and rest-frame UV luminosities [(6.6-15)$\times10^{10}$ L$_\odot$], their ratios, and the implied gas/dust masses and star formation rates [11-290 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$] are typical of high-redshift star-forming galaxies. A toy model of a single satellite galaxy that is tidally stripped by the interaction with the quasar host galaxy can account for the observed velocity and spatial extent of the two extended components. An outflow interpretation of the unique features in PJ308-21 is not supported by the data. PJ308-21 is thus one of the earliest galaxy mergers imaged at cosmic dawn., 9 pages, 6 figures. We present ALMA 0.″28 × 0.″20 (1.4 kpc × 1.0 kpc) resolution observations of the [C II] 158 μm line and underlying dust continuum in the host galaxy of the most distant quasar currently known, ULAS J1342+0928 at z = 7.5413. Both the [C II] and continuum are detected and spatially resolved. The [C II] line is ∼1.5 times more extended than the continuum emission, showing an elongated and complex structure of approximately 3.2 kpc × 6.4 kpc. Two separate peaks are clearly seen (≳6σ each) in three 100 km s-1 width [C II] channel maps. The velocity field of the [C II] gas does not show evidence of a coherent rotation field but rather chaotic motion reminiscent of an ongoing merger.

The discovery of luminous quasars at redshifts up to 7.5 demonstrates the existence of several billion M_sun supermassive black holes (SMBHs) less than a billion years after the Big Bang. They are accompanied by intense star formation in their host galaxies, pinpointing sites of massive galaxy assembly in the early universe, while their absorption spectra reveal an increasing neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at the epoch of reionization. Extrapolating from the rapid evolution of the quasar density at z=5-7, we expect that there is only one luminous quasar powered by a billion M_sun SMBH in the entire observable universe at z~9. In the next decade, new wide-field, deep near-infrared (NIR) sky surveys will push the redshift frontier to the first luminous quasars at z~9-10; the combination with new deep X-ray surveys will probe fainter quasar populations that trace earlier phases of SMBH growth. The identification of these record-breaking quasars, and the measurements of their BH masses and accretion properties require sensitive spectroscopic observations with next generation of ground-based and space telescopes at NIR wavelengths. High-resolution integral-field spectroscopy at NIR, and observations at millimeter and radio wavelengths, will together provide a panchromatic view of the quasar host galaxies and their galactic environment at cosmic dawn, connecting SMBH growth with the rise of the earliest massive galaxies. Systematic surveys and multiwavelength follow-up observations of the earliest luminous quasars will strongly constrain the seeding and growth of the first SMBHs in the universe, and provide the best lines of sight to study the history of reionization., 7 pages, 3 figures, Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

We present deep MUSE observations of five quasars within the first Gyr of the universe (z ≳ 6), four of which display extended Lyα halos. After PSF subtraction, we reveal halos surrounding two quasars for the first time, as well as confirm the presence of two more halos for which tentative detections exist in long-slit spectroscopic observations and narrowband imaging. The four Lyα halos presented here are diverse in morphology and size, they each display spatial asymmetry, and none are centered on the position of the quasar. Spectra of the diffuse halos demonstrate that none are dramatically offset in velocity from the systemic redshift of the quasars (∆v < 200 km s-1) however. each halo shows a broad Lyα line, with a velocity width ∼1000 km s-1. Total Lyα luminosities range between ∼2 × 1043 and ∼2 × 1044 erg s-1, reaching maximum radial extents of 13-30 pkpc from the quasar positions. We find larger sizes and higher Lyα luminosities than previous literature results at this redshift, but find no correlation between the quasar properties and the Lyα halo, suggesting that the detected emission is most closely related to the physical properties of the circumgalactic medium.

We use MUSE/VLT to conduct a survey of $z\sim3$ physical quasar pairs at close separation with a fast observation strategy. Our aim is twofold: (i) explore the Ly$\alpha$ glow around the faint-end of the quasar population; (ii) take advantage of the combined illumination of a quasar pair to unveil large-scale intergalactic structures extending between the two quasars. Here, we report the results for a quasar pair ($z=3.020,3.008$; $i=21.84,22.15$), separated by 11.6 arcsec (or 89 projected kpc). MUSE reveals filamentary Ly$\alpha$ structures extending between the two quasars with an average surface brightness of SB$_{\rm Ly\alpha}=1.8\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. Photoionization models of the constraints in the Ly$\alpha$, HeII, and CIV line emissions show that the emitting structures are intergalactic bridges with an extent between $\sim89$ and up to $\sim600$ kpc. Our models rule out the possibility that the structure extends for $\sim 2.9$ Mpc, i.e., the separation inferred from the uncertain systemic redshift difference of the quasars if the difference was only due to the Hubble flow. At the current spatial resolution and surface brightness limit, the average projected width of an individual bridge is about 35 kpc. We also detect a strong absorption in HI, NV, and CIV along the background sight-line at higher $z$, which we interpret as due to at least two components of cool, metal enriched, and relatively ionized CGM or IGM surrounding the quasar pair. Two additional HI absorbers are detected along both quasar sight-lines at $\sim -900$ and $-2800$ km s$^{-1}$ from the system, with the latter having associated CIV absorption only along the foreground quasar sight-line. The absence of galaxies in the MUSE field of view at the redshifts of these two absorbers suggests that they trace large-scale structures or expanding shells in front of the quasar pair., Comment: 24 Pages, 24 Figures, 6 Appendices; Accepted for publication in A&A

We use ALMA observations of the host galaxy of the quasar ULAS-J1342+0928 at z=7.54 to study the dust continuum and far infrared lines emitted from its interstellar medium. The Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the dust continuum is well sampled with eight different spectral setups, and from a modified black body fit we obtain an emissivity coefficient of beta=1.85+-0.3. Assuming a standard dust temperature of 47 K we derive a dust mass of Mdust=0.35x10^8 Msol and a star formation rate of 150+-30 Msol/yr. We have >4sigma detections of the [CII]_158, [OIII]_88 and [NII]_122 atomic fine structure lines and limits on the [CI]_369, [OI]_146 and [NII]_205 emission. We also report multiple limits of CO rotational lines with Jup >= 7, as well as a tentative 3.3sigma detection of the stack of four CO lines (Jup=11, 10, 8, 7). We find line deficits that are in agreement with local ultra luminous infrared galaxies. Comparison of the [NII]_122 and [CII]_158 lines indicates that the [CII]_158 emission arises predominantly from the neutral medium, and we estimate that the photo-disassociation regions in J1342+0928 have densities 180 cm^-3. Motivated by the discovery of rare enormous Lyman α nebulae (ELAN) around z ̃ 2 quasars, we initiated a long-term campaign with the MUSE/VLT instrument to directly uncover the astrophysics of the gas around quasars. We present here the first 61 targets under the acronym QSO MUSEUM. These quasars are characterized by a median redshift z = 3.17, absolute i magnitude in the range -29.67 ≤ Mi(z = 2) ≤ -27.03, and different levels of radio-loudness. This sample unveils diverse specimens of Ly α nebulosities extending for tens of kpc around these quasars (average maximum projected distance of 80 kpc) above a surface brightness SB > 8.8 × 10-19 erg s-1 cm-2 arcsec-2(2σ). The bulk of the Ly α emission is within R < 50 kpc, and is characterized by relatively quiescent kinematics, with average velocity dispersions Ly α> < 400 km s-1. Therefore, the motions within all these Ly α nebulosities have amplitudes consistent with gravitational motions expected in dark matter haloes hosting quasars at these redshifts, possibly reflecting the complexity in propagating a fast wind on large scales. Our current data suggest a combination of photoionization and resonant scattering as powering mechanisms of the Ly α emission. We discover the first z ̃ 3 ELAN, confirming a very low probability ({̃ }1{{ per cent}}) of occurrence of such systems at these redshifts. Finally, we discuss the redshift evolution currently seen in extended Ly α emission around radio-quiet quasars from z ̃ 3 to z ̃ 2, concluding that it is possibly linked to a decrease of cool gas mass within the circumgalactic medium of quasars from z ̃ 3 to z ̃ 2, and thus to the balance of cool versus hot media. Overall, QSO MUSEUM opens the path to statistical surveys targeting the gas phases in quasars' haloes along cosmic times.

We present a survey for metal absorption systems traced by neutral oxygen over $3.2 < z < 6.5$. Our survey uses Keck/ESI and VLT/X-Shooter spectra of 199 QSOs with redshifts up to 6.6. In total we detect 74 O I absorbers, of which 57 are separated from the background QSO by more than 5000 km/s. We use a maximum likelihood approach to fit the distribution of O I $\lambda$1302 equivalent widths in bins of redshift, and from this determine the evolution in number density of absorbers with $W_{1302} > 0.05$ angstroms. We find that the number density does not monotonically increase with decreasing redshift, as would naively be expected from the buildup of metal-enriched circumgalactic gas with time. The number density over $4.9 < z < 5.7$ is a factor of 1.7--4.1 lower (68% confidence) than over $5.7 < z < 6.5$, with a lower value at $z < 5.7$ favored with 99% confidence. This decrease suggests that the fraction of metals in a low-ionization phase is larger at $z \sim 6$ than at lower redshifts. Absorption from highly ionized metals traced by C IV is also weaker in higher-redshift O I systems, supporting this picture. The evolution of O I absorbers implies that metal-enriched circumgalactic gas at $z \sim 6$ is undergoing an ionization transition driven by a strengthening ultraviolet background. This in turn suggests that the reionization of the diffuse intergalactic medium may still be ongoing at or only recently ended by this epoch., Comment: 43 pages, 85 figures, submitted to ApJ

This is the third paper in a series aimed at finding reionization-era quasars with the combination of DESI Legacy imaging Surveys (DELS), the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Survey, and near-infrared imaging surveys, such as the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS), as well as the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared survey. In this paper, we describe the updated quasar candidate selection procedure, report the discovery of 16 quasars at 6.4 ≲ z ≲ 6.9 from an area of ∼13,020 deg2, and present the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z ∼ 6.7. The measured QLF follows {{Φ }}({L}1450)\propto {L}1450-2.35 in the magnitude range -27.6 < M 1450 < -25.5. We determine the quasar comoving spatial density at < z> = 6.7 and M 1450 < -26.0 to be 0.39 ± 0.11 Gpc-3 and find the exponential density evolution parameter to be k = -0.78 ± 0.18 from z ∼ 6 to z ∼ 6.7, corresponding to a rapid decline by a factor of ∼6 per unit redshift toward earlier epochs. This indicates that the rapid decline of quasar spatial density at z > 5 that was found by previous works continues to z > 6, at a rate significantly faster than the average decline rate between z ∼ 3 and 5. We measured quasar comoving emissivity at z ∼ 6.7, which indicates that high-redshift quasars are highly unlikely to make a significant contribution to hydrogen reionization. The broad absorption line quasar fraction at z ≳ 6.5 is measured to be ≳22%. In addition, we also report the discovery of six additional quasars at z ∼ 6 in the Appendix.
