Quelques années à peine après la découverte de l’existence des galaxies, nous avons compris en étudiant leur dynamique que l’Univers avait une histoire, celle qui a succédé au Big Bang et à l’expansion de l’Univers. Malgré cela, il a fallu de nombreuses années pour réaliser que les galaxies évoluaient en permanence, tant au niveau de leur forme que de leurs couleurs ou de leur activité de formation d’étoiles ou de la croissance de leur trou noir galactique. Il faudra attendre le milieu des années 1990 pour que l’on réalise que la formation des galaxies était un processus véritablement continu, après l’échec cuisant de la quête des galaxies primordiales entreprise dans les années 1980-1990. L’histoire de l’évolution cosmique des galaxies suit de près les progrès réalisés dans les techniques d’observation de l’univers, avec l’arrivée des télescopes de la classe des 8-10 mètres, le télescope spatial Hubble et l’approche multi-longueurs d’ondes révélant à chaque fréquence du spectre électromagnétique une facette différente des galaxies.

Multi-messenger astrophysics is becoming a major avenue to explore the Universe, with the potential to span a vast range of redshifts. The growing synergies between different probes is opening new frontiers, which promise profound insights into several aspects of fundamental physics and cosmology. In this context, THESEUS will play a central role during the 2030s in detecting and localizing the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave and neutrino sources that the unprecedented sensitivity of next generation detectors will discover at much higher rates than the present. The Infra-Red Telescope (IRT) is part of the payload of the THESEUS mission, which is one of the two ESA M5 candidates within the Cosmic Vision program, planned for launch in 2032. The THESEUS payload, composed by two high energy wide field monitors (SXI and XGIS) and a near infra-red telescope (IRT), is optimized to detect, localize and characterize Gamma-Ray Bursts and other high-energy transients. The main goal of the IRT is to identify and precisely localize the NIR counterparts of the high-energy sources and to measure their distance. We performed a comprehensive stacking analysis on ∼14, 200 quiescent galaxy (QG) candidates at z = 0–3 across mid-, far-infrared (MIR and FIR), and radio wavelengths. Identified via their rest- frame NUV ‑ r and r ‑ J colors, the QG candidates ({; ; ; M}; ; ; \star ={; ; ; 10}; ; ; 9.8{; ; ; {; ; ; {; ; ; --}; ; ; }; ; ; 12.2}; ; ; {; ; ; M}; ; ; ȯ ) have drastically different IR and radio properties depending on their 24 μm emission strength. The fraction of QG candidates with strong 24 μm emission (equivalent to inferred star formation rates SFR{; ; ; }; ; ; 24≥slant 100 {; ; ; M}; ; ; ȯ {; ; ; {; ; ; yr}; ; ; }; ; ; -1, hereafter “IR-bright”) increases with redshift and peaks at 15%, and their stacked MIPS 24 μm, Herschel (PACS and SPIRE) and VLA emissions are consistent with being star-forming galaxies (SFGs). In contrast, the majority of QG candidates are faint or undetected at 24 μm individually (i.e., SFR24 < 100 M⊙ yr‑1, hereafter “IR-faint”). Their low dust-obscured SFRs derived from Herschel stacking (SFRH ≲ 3, 15, 50 M⊙ yr‑1 out to z ∼ 1, 2, 3) are >2.5– 12.5× lower than compared to SFGs. This is consistent with the quiescence, as expected from their low unobscured SFRs, as inferred from modeling their ultraviolet-to-NIR photometry. The discrepancy between the LIR derived from stacking Herschel and 24 μm indicates that IR-faint QGs have dust SEDs that are different from those of SFGs. For the most massive ({; ; ; M}; ; ; \star ≥slant {; ; ; 10}; ; ; 11 {; ; ; M}; ; ; ȯ ) IR-faint QGs at z < 1.5, the stacked 1.4 GHz emission is in excess of that expected from other SFR indicators, suggesting a widespread presence of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. Our results reaffirm the existence of a significant population of QGs out to z = 3, thus corroborating the need to quench star formation in galaxies at early epochs.

Infrared (IR) luminosity is fundamental to understanding the cosmic star formation history and AGN evolution. The AKARI IR space telescope performed all sky survey in 6 IR bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140, and 160um) with 3-10 times better sensitivity than IRAS, covering the crucial far-IR wavelengths across the peak of the dust emission. Combined with a better spatial resolution, AKARI can much more precisely measure the total infrared luminosity (L_TIR) of individual galaxies, and thus, the total infrared luminosity density in the local Universe. By fitting IR SED models, we have re-measured L_TIR of the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. We present mid-IR monochromatic luminosity to L_TIR conversions for Spitzer 8,24um, AKARI 9,18um, IRAS 12um, WISE 12,22um, and ISO 15um filters, with scatter ranging 13-44%. The resulting AKARI IR luminosity function (LF) agrees well with that from the IRAS. We integrate the LF weighted by L_TIR to obtain a cosmic IR luminosity density of Omega_TIR= (8.5^{+1.5}_{-2.3})x 10^7 L Mpc^-3, of which 7+-1% is produced by LIRGs, and only 0.4+-0.1% is from ULIRGs in the local Universe. Once IR contributions from AGN and star-forming galaxies (SFG) are separated, SFG IR LF shows a steep decline at the bright-end. Compared with high-redshift results from the AKARI NEP deep survey, these data show a strong evolution of Omega_TIRSF propto (1+z)^4.0+-0.5, and Omega_TIRAGN propto (1+z)^4.4+-0.4. For Omega_TIRAGN, the ULIRG contribution exceeds that from LIRG already by z~1. A rapid evolution in both Omega_TIRAGN and Omega_TIRSFG suggests the correlation between star formation and black hole accretion rate continues up to higher redshifts. We compare the evolution of Omega_TIRAGN to that of X-ray luminosity density. The Omega_TIRAGN/Omega_X-rayAGN ratio shows a possible increase at z>1, suggesting an increase of obscured AGN at z>1.

We report a sizable class of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with unusually weak near-infrared (1-3{\mu}m) emission in the XMM-COSMOS type 1 AGN sample. The fraction of these "hot-dust-poor" AGNs increases with redshift from 6% at lowredshift (z < 2) to 20% at moderate high redshift (2 < z < 3.5). There is no clear trend of the fraction with other parameters: bolometric luminosity, Eddington ratio, black hole mass, and X-ray luminosity. The 3{\mu}m emission relative to the 1{\mu}m emission is a factor of 2-4 smaller than the typical Elvis et al. AGN spectral energy distribution (SED), which indicates a "torus" covering factor of 2%-29%, a factor of 3-40 smaller than required by unified models. The weak hot dust emission seems to expose an extension of the accretion disk continuum in some of the source SEDs. We estimate the outer edge of their accretion disks to lie at $(0.3-2.0) /times 10^4$ Schwarzschild radii, ~10-23 times the gravitational stability radii. We present the 24 micron rest-frame luminosity function (LF) of star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 0.0 < z < 0.6 constructed from 4047 spectroscopic redshifts from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey of 24 micron selected sources in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. This sample provides the best available combination of large area (9 deg^2), depth, and statistically complete spectroscopic observations, allowing us to probe the evolution of the 24 micron LF of galaxies at low and intermediate redshifts while minimizing the effects of cosmic variance. In order to use the observed 24 micron luminosity as a tracer for star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that could contribute significantly at 24 micron are identified and excluded from our star-forming galaxy sample based on their mid-IR spectral energy distributions or the detection of X-ray emission. The evolution of the 24 micron LF of star-forming galaxies for redshifts of z < 0.65 is consistent with a pure luminosity evolution where the characteristic 24 micron luminosity evolves as (1+z)^(3.8+/-0.3). We extend our evolutionary study to encompass 0.0 < z < 1.2 by combining our data with that of the Far-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey. Over this entire redshift range the evolution of the characteristic 24 micron luminosity is described by a slightly shallower power law of (1+z)^(3.4+/-0.2). We find a local star formation rate density of (1.09+/-0.21) x 10^-2 Msun/yr/Mpc^-3, and that it evolves as (1+z)^(3.5+/-0.2) over 0.0 < z < 1.2. These estimates are in good agreement with the rates using optical and UV fluxes corrected for the effects of intrinsic extinction in the observed sources. Using the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we present low-resolution (64 0.5 mJy; 2) R-[24] > 14 Vega mag; and 3) a prominent rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar photospheric feature redshifted into Spitzer's 3-8 micron IRAC bands. Of these, 20 show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), usually interpreted as signatures of star formation. The PAH features indicate redshifts in the range 1.5 =1.96 and a dispersion of 0.30. Based on local templates, these sources have extremely large infrared luminosities, comparable to that of submillimeter galaxies. Our results confirm previous indications that the rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar bump can be efficiently used to select highly obscured starforming galaxies at z~2, and that the fraction of starburst-dominated ULIRGs increases to faint 24 micron flux densities. Using local templates, we find that the observed narrow redshift distribution is due to the fact that the 24 micron detectability of PAH-rich sources peaks sharply at z = 1.9. We can analogously explain the broader redshift distribution of Spitzer-detected AGN-dominated ULIRGs based on the shapes of their SEDs. Finally, we conclude that z~2 sources with a detectable 1.6 micron stellar opacity feature lack sufficient AGN emission to veil the 7.7 micron PAH band.

We have imaged a $\sim$6 arcminute$^2$ region in the Bo\"otes Deep Field using the 350 $\mu$m-optimised second generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II), achieving a peak 1$\sigma$ sensitivity of $\sim$5 mJy. We detect three sources above 3$\sigma$, and determine a spurious source detection rate of 1.09 in our maps. In the absence of $5\sigma$ detections, we rely on deep 24 $\mu$m and 20 cm imaging to deduce which sources are most likely to be genuine, giving two real sources. From this we derive an integral source count of 0.84$^{+1.39}_{-0.61}$ sources arcmin$^{-2}$ at $S>13$ mJy, which is consistent with 350 $\mu$m source count models that have an IR-luminous galaxy population evolving with redshift. We use these constraints to consider the future for ground-based short-submillimetre surveys.

The relationship between galaxy star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses ($M_\ast$) is re-examined using a mass-selected sample of $\sim$62,000 star-forming galaxies at $z \le 1.3$ in the COSMOS 2-deg$^2$ field. Using new far-infrared photometry from $Herschel$-PACS and SPIRE and $Spitzer$-MIPS 24 $\mu$m, along with derived infrared luminosities from the NRK method based on galaxies' locations in the restframe color-color diagram $(NUV - r)$ vs. $(r - K)$, we are able to more accurately determine total SFRs for our complete sample. At all redshifts, the relationship between median $SFR$ and $M_\ast$ follows a power-law at low stellar masses, and flattens to nearly constant SFR at high stellar masses. We describe a new parameterization that provides the best fit to the main sequence and characterizes the low mass power-law slope, turnover mass, and overall scaling. The turnover in the main sequence occurs at a characteristic mass of about $M_{0} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ at all redshifts. The low mass power-law slope ranges from 0.9-1.3 and the overall scaling rises in SFR as a function of $(1+z)^{4.12 \pm 0.10}$. A broken power-law fit below and above the turnover mass gives relationships of $SFR \propto M_{*}^{0.88 \pm 0.06}$ below the turnover mass and $SFR \propto M_{*}^{0.27 \pm 0.04}$ above the turnover mass. Galaxies more massive than $M_\ast \gtrsim 10^{10}\ M_{\rm \odot}$ have on average, a much lower specific star formation rate (sSFR) than would be expected by simply extrapolating the traditional linear fit to the main sequence found for less massive galaxies.

We use deep panchromatic datasets in the GOODS-N field, from GALEX to the deepest Herschel far-infrared and VLA radio continuum imaging, to explore, using mass-complete samples, the evolution of the star formation activity and dust attenuation of star-forming galaxies to z~4. Our main results can be summarized as follows: i) the slope of the SFR-M correlation is consistent with being constant, and equal to ~0.8 at least up to z~1.5, while its normalization keeps increasing with redshift; ii) for the first time here we are able to explore the FIR-radio correlation for a mass-selected sample of star-forming galaxies: the correlation does not evolve up to z~4; iii) we confirm that galaxy stellar mass is a robust proxy for UV dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies, with more massive galaxies being more dust attenuated, strikingly we find that this attenuation relation evolves very weakly with redshift, the amount of dust attenuation increasing by less than 0.3 magnitudes over the redshift range [0.5-4] for a fixed stellar mass, as opposed to a tenfold increase of star formation rate; iv) the correlation between dust attenuation and the UV spectral slope evolves in redshift, with the median UV spectral slope of star-forming galaxies becoming bluer with redshift. By z~3, typical UV slopes are inconsistent, given the measured dust attenuation, with the predictions of commonly used empirical laws. Finally, building on existing results, we show that gas reddening is marginally larger (by a factor of around 1.3) than stellar reddening at all redshifts probed, and also that the amount of dust attenuation at a fixed ISM metallicity increases with redshift. We speculate that our results support evolving ISM conditions of typical star-forming galaxies such that at z~1.5 Main Sequence galaxies have ISM conditions getting closer to those of local starbursts., 19 pages, 12 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Spitzer observations of thirteen z~6 quasars using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). All the quasars except SDSS J000552.34-000655.8 (SDSS J0005-0006) were detected with high S/N in the four IRAC channels and the MIPS 24um band, while SDSS J0005-0006 was marginally detected in the IRAC 8.0um band, and not detected in the MIPS 24um band. We find that most of these quasars have prominent emission from hot dust as evidenced by the observed 24um fluxes. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are similar to those of low-redshift quasars at rest-frame 0.15-3.5 um, suggesting that accretion disks and hot-dust structures for these sources already have reached maturity. However, SDSS J0005-0006 has an unusual SED that lies significantly below low-redshift SED templates at rest-frame 1 and 3.5 um, and thus shows a strong near-IR (NIR) deficit and no hot-dust emission. Type I quasars with extremely small NIR-to-optical flux ratios like SDSS J0005-0006 are not found in low-redshift quasar samples, indicating that SDSS J0005-0006 has different dust properties at high redshift. We combine the Spitzer observations with X-ray, UV/optical, mm/submm and radio observations to determine bolometric luminosities for all the quasars. We find that the four quasars with central black-hole mass measurements have Eddington ratios of order unity.

We study the distribution of Eddington luminosity ratios, L_bol/L_edd, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) discovered in the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES). We combine H-beta, MgII, and CIV line widths with continuum luminosities to estimate black hole (BH) masses in 407 AGNs, covering the redshift range z~0.3-4 and the bolometric luminosity range L_bol~10^45-10^47 erg/s. We present a spectroscopic survey using the MMT/Hectospec fiber spectrograph of 24 micron sources selected with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the Spitzer First Look Survey. We report 1296 new redshifts for 24 micron sources, including 599 with f(24micron) > 1 mJy. Combined with 291 additional redshifts for sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), our observing program was highly efficient and is ~90% complete for i' < 21 mag and f(24micron) > 1 mJy, and is 35% complete for i' < 20.5 mag and 0.3 mJy < f(24micron) < 1 mJy. Our Hectospec survey includes 1078 and 168 objects spectroscopically classified as galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Combining the Hectospec and SDSS samples, we find 24 micron-selected galaxies to z < 0.98 and QSOs to z < 3.6, with mean redshifts of = 0.27 and =1.1. We investigate of the properties of $\sim$2000 Herschel/SPIRE-selected galaxies from $00.5$), the highest $L_{TIR}$ galaxies in a given redshift bin are unobserved by SPIRE at subsequently lower redshifts, a trend linked to downsizing. We report the detection of a 3.6sigma 350micron-selected source in the Bootes Deep Field. The source, the first Short-wavelength Submillimeter-selected Galaxy (SSG 1), was discovered as part of a blank field extragalactic survey using the 350micron-optimised Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. With multiwavelength photometry from NOAO-NDWFS (R and I band), FLAMEX (J and K_s), Spitzer (IRAC and MIPS) and the Westerbork 1.4GHz Deep Survey (radio upper limit), we are able to constrain the photometric redshift using different methods, all of which suggest a redshift of close to 1. In the absence of long-wavelength submillimeter data we use SED templates to infer that this source is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) with a dust temperature of 30+/-5 K, occupying a region of luminosity-temperature space shared by modarate redshift ISO-selected ULIRGs (rather than high redshift SCUBA-selected SMGs). SHARC II can thus select SMGs with moderately "warm'' dust that might be missed in submillimeter surveys at longer wavelengths.

We present the results of a Herschel-PACS study of a sample of 97 LINERs at redshift z\sim 0.3 selected from the zCOSMOS survey. Of these sources, 34 are detected in a least one PACS band, enabling reliable estimates of the far-infrared L(FIR) luminosities, and a comparison to the FIR luminosities of local LINERs. Many of our PACS-detected LINERs are also UV sources detected by Galex. Assuming that the FIR is produced in young dusty star-forming regions, the typical star-formation rates (SFRs) for the host galaxies in our sample is \sim 10 M_Sun yr-1, 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than in many local LINERs. Given stellar masses inferred from optical/NIR photometry of the (unobscured) evolved stellar populations, we find that the entire sample lies close to the star-forming "main sequence" for galaxies at redshift 0.3. For young star-forming regions, the H\alpha- and UV-based estimates of the SFRs are much smaller than the FIR-based estimates, by factors \sim 30, even assuming that all of the H\alpha\ emission is produced by O-star ionization rather than by the AGNs. These discrepancies may be due to large (and uncertain) extinctions towards the young stellar systems. Alternatively, the H\alpha\ and UV emissions could be tracing residual star-formation in an older less obscured population with decaying star formation. We also compare L(SF) and L(AGN) in local LINERs and in our sample and comment on the problematic use of several line diagnostic diagrams in cases similar to the sample under study., Comment: Tommasin et al. 2012, ApJ, 753, 155

Emission line diagnostic diagrams probing the ionization sources in galaxies, such as the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagram, have been used extensively to distinguish active galactic nuclei (AGN) from purely star-forming galaxies. However, they remain poorly understood at higher redshifts. We shed light on this issue with an empirical approach based on a z ~ 0 reference sample built from ~300,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies, from which we mimic selection effects due to typical emission line detection limits at higher redshift. We combine this low-redshift reference sample with a simple prescription for luminosity evolution of the global galaxy population to predict the loci of high-redshift galaxies on the BPT and Mass-Excitation (MEx) diagnostic diagrams. The predicted bivariate distributions agree remarkably well with direct observations of galaxies out to z ~ 1.5, including the observed stellar mass-metallicity (MZ) relation evolution. As a result, we infer that high-redshift star-forming galaxies are consistent with having normal interstellar medium (ISM) properties out to z ~ 1.5, after accounting for selection effects and line luminosity evolution. Namely, their optical line ratios and gas-phase metallicities are comparable to that of low-redshift galaxies with equivalent emission-line luminosities. In contrast, AGN narrow-line regions may show a shift toward lower metallicities at higher redshift. While a physical evolution of the ISM conditions is not ruled out for purely star-forming galaxies and may be more important starting at z 2, we find that reliably quantifying this evolution is hindered by selections effects. The recipes provided here may serve as a basis for future studies toward this goal. Code to predict the loci of galaxies on the BPT and MEx diagnostic diagrams and the MZ relation as a function of emission line luminosity limits is made publicly available.

Using a sample of 25683 star-forming and 2821 passive galaxies at $z\sim2$, selected in the COSMOS field following the BzK color criterion, we study the hosting halo mass and environment of galaxies as a function of their physical properties. Spitzer and Herschel provide accurate SFR estimates for starburst galaxies. We measure the auto- and cross-correlation functions of various galaxy sub-samples and infer the properties of their hosting halos using both an HOD model and the linear bias at large scale. We find that passive and star-forming galaxies obey a similarly rising relation between the halo and stellar mass. The mean host halo mass of star forming galaxies increases with the star formation rate between 30 and 200 M$_\odot$.yr$^{-1}$, but flattens for higher values, except if we select only main-sequence galaxies. This reflects the expected transition from a regime of secular co-evolution of the halos and the galaxies to a regime of episodic starburst. We find similar large scale biases for main-sequence, passive, and starburst galaxies at equal stellar mass, suggesting that these populations live in halos of the same mass. We detect an excess of clustering on small scales for passive galaxies and showed, by measuring the large-scale bias of close pairs, that this excess is caused by a small fraction ($\sim16%$) of passive galaxies being hosted by massive halos ($\sim 3 \times 10^{13}$ M$_\odot$) as satellites. Finally, extrapolating the growth of halos hosting the z$\sim$2 population, we show that M$_\star \sim 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ galaxies at z$\sim$2 will evolve, on average, into massive (M$_\star \sim 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$), field galaxies in the local Universe and M$_\star \sim 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ galaxies at z=2 into local, massive, group galaxies. We aim to measure the average dust and molecular gas content of massive star-forming galaxies ($\rm > 3 \times 10^{10}\,M_\odot$) up to z=4 in the COSMOS field to determine if the intense star formation observed at high redshift is induced by major mergers or caused by large gas reservoirs. Firstly, we measured the evolution of the average spectral energy distributions as a function of redshift using a stacking analysis of Spitzer, Herschel, LABOCA, and AzTEC data for two samples of galaxies: normal star-forming objects and strong starbursts, as defined by their distance to the main sequence. We found that the mean intensity of the radiation field $< U >$ heating the dust (strongly correlated with dust temperature) increases with increasing redshift up to z$\sim$4 in main-sequence galaxies. We can reproduce this evolution with simple models that account for the decrease of the gas metallicity with redshift. No evolution of $< U >$ with redshift is found in strong starbursts. We then deduced the evolution of the molecular gas fraction (defined here as $\rm M_{\rm mol}/(M_{\rm mol}+M_\star)$) with redshift and found a similar, steeply increasing trend for both samples. At z$\sim$4, this fraction reaches $\sim$60%. International audience; We present an empirical method of assessing the star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies based on their locations in the rest-frame color–color diagram (NUV − r) vs. (r − K). By using the Spitzer 24 μm sample in the COSMOS field (~16 400 galaxies with 0.2 ≤ z ≤ 1.3) and a local GALEX-SDSS-SWIRE sample (~700 galaxies with z ≤ 0.2), we show that the mean infrared excess ⟨IRX⟩ = ⟨ LIR/LUV ⟩ can be described by a single vector, NRK , that combines the two colors. The calibration between ⟨IRX⟩ and NRK allows us to recover the IR luminosity, LIR, with an accuracy of σ ~ 0.21 for the COSMOS sample and 0.27 dex for the local one. The SFRs derived with this method agree with the ones based on the observed (UV+IR) luminosities and on the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting for the vast majority (~85%) of the star-forming population. Thanks to a library of model galaxy SEDs with realistic prescriptions for the star formation history, we show that we need to include a two-component dust model (i.e., birth clouds and diffuse ISM) and a full distribution of galaxy inclinations in order to reproduce the behavior of the ⟨IRX⟩ stripes in the NUVrK diagram. In conclusion, the NRK method, based only on the rest-frame UV/optical colors available in most of the extragalactic fields, offers a simple alternative of assessing the SFR of star-forming galaxies in the absence of far-IR or spectral diagnostic observations.

We combine Herschel PACS and SPIRE maps of the full 2 deg^2 COSMOS field with existing multi-wavelength data to obtain template and model-independent optical-to-far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 4,218 Herschel-selected sources with log(L_IR/L_sun) = 9.4-13.6 and z = 0.02-3.54. Median SEDs are created by binning the optical to far-infrared (FIR) bands available in COSMOS as a function of infrared luminosity. Herschel probes rest-frame wavelengths where the bulk of the infrared radiation is emitted, allowing us to more accurately determine fundamental dust properties of our sample of infrared luminous galaxies. We find that the SED peak wavelength (lambda_peak) decreases and the dust mass (M_dust) increases with increasing total infrared luminosity (L_IR). In the lowest infrared luminosity galaxies (log(L_IR/L_sun) = 10.0-11.5), we see evidence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) features (lambda=7-9 um), while in the highest infrared luminosity galaxies (L_IR > 10^12 L_sun) we see an increasing contribution of hot dust and/or power-law emission, consistent with the presence of heating from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We study the relationship between stellar mass and star formation rate of our sample of infrared luminous galaxies and find no evidence that Herschel-selected galaxies follow the SFR/M_* "main sequence" as previously determined from studies of optically selected, star-forming galaxies. Finally, we compare the mid-infrared (MIR) to FIR properties of our infrared luminous galaxies using the previously defined diagnostic, IR8 = L_IR / L_8, and find that galaxies with L_IR > 10^11.3 L_sun tend to systematically lie above (~3-5) the IR8 "infrared main sequence", suggesting either suppressed PAH emission or an increasing contribution from AGN heating., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Galaxy interactions/mergers have been shown to dominate the population of IR luminous galaxies (log(LIR)>11.6Lsun) in the local Universe (z 11.5 Lsun, >50% of the objects show evident features of strongly interacting/merger systems, where this percentage is similar to the studies of local IR-luminous galaxies. The fraction of interacting/merger systems also systematically increases with the deviation from the SFR-M relation, supporting the view that galaxies fall above the MS are more dominated by mergers than the MS galaxies. Meanwhile, we find that ~18% of massive IR-luminous MS galaxies are classified as interacting systems, where this population may not evolve through the evolutionary track predicted by a simple gas exhaustion model., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepted

The ‘Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph’ (METIS) will be the third instrument on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). METIS will provide diffraction limited imaging in the atmospheric L/M and N-band from 3 to 14 μm over an 18˝×18˝ field of view, as well as high contrast coronagraphy, medium-resolution (R ≤ 5000) long slit spectroscopy, and polarimetry. In addition, an integral field spectrograph will provide a spectral resolution of R ~ 100,000 at L/M band. Focusing on highest angular resolution and high spectral resolution, METIS will deliver unique science, in particular in the areas of exo-planets, proto-planetary-disks and high-redshift galaxies, which are illustrated in this paper. The reduction of the E-ELT aperture size had little impact on the METIS science case. With the recent positive developments in the area of detectors, the METIS instrument concept has reached a high level of technology readiness. For some key components (cryogenic chopping mirror, immersed grating, sorption cooler and cryogenic derotator) a development and test program has been launched successfully.

We present a characterization of the close environment of GRB980425 based on 5-160mic spectro-imaging obtained with Spitzer. The Gamma-Ray Burst GRB980425 occurred in a nearby (z=0.0085) SBc-type dwarf galaxy, at a projected distance of 900pc from an HII region with strong signatures of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. While this "WR region" produces less than 5% of the B-band emission of the host, we find that it is responsible for 45+/-10% of the total infrared luminosity, with a maximum contribution reaching 75% at 25-30mic. This atypical property is rarely observed among morphologically-relaxed dwarves, suggesting a strong causal link with the GRB event. We provide evidence for a correlation between the presence of giant clumps and the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in disk galaxies. Giant clumps of 10^8-9 Msun arise from violent gravitational instability in gas-rich galaxies, and it has been proposed that this instability could feed supermassive black holes (BH). We use emission line diagnostics to compare a sample of 14 clumpy (unstable) disks and a sample of 13 smoother (stable) disks at redshift z~0.7. The majority of clumpy disks in our sample have a high probability of containing AGN. Their [OIII] emission line is strongly excited, inconsistent with low-metallicity star formation alone. [NeIII] excitation is also higher. Stable disks rarely have such properties. Stacking ultra sensitive Chandra observations (4 Ms) reveals an X-ray excess in clumpy galaxies, which cannot be solely due to star formation and confirms the presence of AGN. The clumpy galaxies in our intermediate-redshift sample have properties typical of gas-rich disk galaxies rather than mergers, being in particular on the Main Sequence of star formation. This suggests that our findings apply to the physically-similar and numerous gas-rich unstable disks at z>1. Using the observed [OIII] and X-ray luminosities, we conservatively estimate that AGN hosted by clumpy disks have typical bolometric luminosities of the order of a few 10^43 erg/s, BH growth rates ~10^-2 Msun/yr, and that these AGN are substantially obscured in X-rays. This moderate-luminosity mode could be sufficient to provide a large fraction of today's BH mass over a couple of Gyr given that our observations suggest a high duty cycle (>10%), accretion bursts with higher luminosities being possible over shorter phases. Detailed analysis of the substructure of Lya nebulae can put important constraints on the physical mechanisms at work and the properties of galaxies forming within them. Using high resolution HST imaging of a Lya nebula at z~2.656, we have taken a census of the compact galaxies in the vicinity, used optical/near-infrared colors to select system members, and put constraints on the morphology of the spatially-extended emission. The system is characterized by (a) a population of compact, low luminosity (~0.1 L*) sources --- 17 primarily young, small (Re~1-2 kpc), disky galaxies including an obscured AGN --- that are all substantially offset (>20 kpc) from the line-emitting nebula; (b) the lack of a central galaxy at or near the peak of the Lya emission; and (c) several nearly coincident, spatially extended emission components --- Lya, HeII, and UV continuum --- that are extremely smooth. These morphological findings are difficult to reconcile with theoretical models that invoke outflows, cold flows, or resonant scattering, suggesting that while all of these physical phenomena may be occurring, they are not sufficient to explain the powering and large extent of Lya nebulae. In addition, although the compact galaxies within the system are irrelevant as power sources, the region is significantly overdense relative to the field galaxy population (by at least a factor of 4). We analyze the dependence of galaxy structure (size and Sersic index) and mode of star formation (\Sigma_SFR and SFR_IR/SFR_UV) on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus Mass diagram. Our sample comprises roughly 640000 galaxies at z~0.1, 130000 galaxies at z~1, and 36000 galaxies at z~2. Structural measurements for all but the z~0.1 galaxies were based on HST imaging, and SFRs are derived using a Herschel-calibrated ladder of SFR indicators. We find that a correlation between the structure and stellar population of galaxies (i.e., a 'Hubble sequence') is already in place since at least z~2.5. At all epochs, typical star-forming galaxies on the main sequence are well approximated by exponential disks, while the profiles of quiescent galaxies are better described by de Vaucouleurs profiles. In the upper envelope of the main sequence, the relation between the SFR and Sersic index reverses, suggesting a rapid build-up of the central mass concentration in these starbursting outliers. We observe quiescent, moderately and highly star-forming systems to co-exist over an order of magnitude or more in stellar mass. At each mass and redshift, galaxies on the main sequence have the largest size. The rate of size growth correlates with specific SFR, and so does \Sigma_SFR at each redshift. A simple model using an empirically determined SF law and metallicity scaling, in combination with an assumed geometry for dust and stars is able to relate the observed \Sigma_SFR and SFR_IR/SFR_UV, provided a more patchy dust geometry is assumed for high-redshift galaxies., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal, 22 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We present the results from an optical and near-infrared spectroscopic study of the ultraviolet-luminous z = 2.73 galaxy, the 8 o'clock arc. Due to gravitational lensing, this galaxy is magnified by a factor of > 10, allowing in-depth measurements which are usually unfeasible at such redshifts. In the optical spectra, we measured the systemic redshift of the galaxy, z = 2.7322 +/- 0.0012, using stellar photospheric lines. This differs from the redshift of absorption lines in the interstellar medium, z = 2.7302 +/- 0.0006, implying gas outflows on the order of 160 km/s. With H and K-band near-infrared spectra, we have measured nebular emission lines of Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, [N II] and [O III], which have a redshift z = 2.7333 +/- 0.0001, consistent with the derived systemic redshift. From the Balmer decrement, we measured the dust extinction to be A_5500 = 1.17 +/- 0.36 mag. Correcting Halpha for dust extinction and the assumed lensing factor, we measure a star-formation rate of ~ 270 Msol/yr, which is higher than ~ 85% of star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2-3. Using combinations of all detected emission lines, we find that the 8 o'clock arc has a gas-phase metallicity of ~ 0.8 Zsol, showing that enrichment at high-redshift is not rare, even in blue, star-forming galaxies. Studying spectra from two of the arc components separately, we find that one component dominates the dust extinction and star-formation rate, although the metallicities between the two components are similar. We derive the mass via stellar population modeling, and find that the arc has a total stellar mass of ~ 4 x 10^11 Msol, which falls on the mass-metallicity relation at z ~ 2. Finally, we estimate the total gas mass, and find it to be only ~ 12% of the stellar mass, implying that the 8 o'clock arc is likely nearing the end of a starburst., Replaced with updated version after proofs. International audience; We present new 70 and 160 mum observations of a sample of extremely red (R - [24] gsim 15 mag), mid-infrared bright, high-redshift (1.7 lsim z lsim 2.8) galaxies. All targets detected in the far-infrared exhibit rising spectral energy distributions (SEDs) consistent with dust emission from obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and/or star-forming regions in luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs). We find that the SEDs of the high-redshift sources are more similar to canonical AGN-dominated local ultraluminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) with significant warm dust components than to typical local star-forming ULIRGs. The inferred IR (8-1000 mum) bolometric luminosities are found to be L bol ~ 4 × 1012 L sun to ~3 × 1013 L sun (ULIRGs/hyper-luminous IR galaxies (HyLIRGs)), representing the first robust constraints on L bol for this class of object.

We present constraints on the nature of the first galaxies selected at 350 μm. The sample includes galaxies discovered in the deepest blank-field survey at 350 μm (in the Bootes Deep Field) and also later serendipitous detections in the Lockman Hole. In determining multiwavelength identifications, the 350 μm position and map resolution of the second generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera are critical, especially in the cases where multiple radio sources exist and the 24 μm counterparts are unresolved. Spectral energy distribution templates are fitted to identified counterparts, and the sample is found to comprise IR-luminous galaxies at 1 < z < 3 predominantly powered by star formation. The first spectrum of a 350 μm selected galaxy provides an additional confirmation, showing prominent dust grain features typically associated with star-forming galaxies. Compared to submillimeter galaxies selected at 850 and 1100 μm, galaxies selected at 350 μm have a similar range of far-infrared color temperatures. However, no 350 μm selected sources are reliably detected at 850 or 1100 μm. Galaxies in our sample with redshifts 1 < z < 2 show a tight correlation between the far- and mid-infrared flux densities, but galaxies at higher redshifts show a large dispersion in their mid- to far-infrared colors. This implies a limit to which the mid-IR emission traces the far-IR emission in star-forming galaxies. The 350 μm flux densities (15 < S 350 < 40 mJy) place these objects near the Herschel/SPIRE 350 μm confusion threshold, with the lower limit on the star formation rate density suggesting the bulk of the 350 μm contribution will come from less luminous infrared sources and normal galaxies. Therefore, the nature of the dominant source of the 350 μm background—star-forming galaxies in the epoch of peak star formation in the universe—could be more effectively probed using ground-based instruments with their angular resolution and sensitivity offering significant advantages over space-based imaging.

We combine new Spitzer Space Telescope observations in the mid- and far-infrared with SCUBA 850 micron observations to improve the measurement of dust temperatures, masses and luminosities for 11 galaxies of the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey (SLUGS). By fitting dust models we measure typical dust masses of 10E7.9 M_sol and dust luminosities of ~ 10E10 L_sol, for galaxies with modest star formation rates. The data presented in this paper combined with previous observations show that cold dust is present in all types of spiral galaxies and is a major contributor to their total luminosity. Because of the lower dust temperature of the SCUBA sources measured in this paper, they have flatter Far-IR nu F_nu(160um)/nu F_nu(850um) slopes than the larger Spitzer Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), the sample that provides the best measurements of the dust properties of galaxies in the nearby universe. We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 16 optically faint infrared luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These sources were jointly selected from Spitzer and Chandra imaging surveys in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Boötes field and were selected from their bright X-ray fluxes to host luminous AGNs. None of the spectra show significant emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; 6.2 μm equivalent widths

We present the redshift distribution of a complete, unbiased sample of 24 micron sources down to fnu(24 micron) = 300 uJy (5-sigma). The sample consists of 591 sources detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We have obtained optical spectroscopic redshifts for 421 sources (71%). These have a redshift distribution peaking at z~0.3, with a possible additional peak at z~0.9, and objects detected out to z=4.5. The spectra of the remaining 170 (29%) exhibit no strong emission lines from which to determine a redshift. We develop an algorithm to estimate the redshift distribution of these sources, based on the assumption that they have emission lines but that these lines are not observable due to the limited wavelength coverage of our spectroscopic observations. The redshift distribution derived from all 591 sources exhibits an additional peak of extremely luminous (L(8-1000 micron) > 3 x 10^{12} Lsun) objects at z~2, consisting primarily of sources without observable emission lines. We use optical line diagnostics and IRAC colors to estimate that 55% of the sources within this peak are AGN-dominated. We compare our results to published models of the evolution of infrared luminous galaxies. We present mid-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of 11 optically faint, infrared luminous galaxies selected from a Spitzer MIPS 70um imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. Observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope have revealed a population of red-sequence galaxies with a significant excess in their 24-micron emission compared to what is expected from an old stellar population. We identify 900 red galaxies with 0.150.3 mJy). We determine the prevalence of AGN and star-formation activity in all the AGES galaxies using optical line diagnostics and mid-IR color-color criteria. Using the IRAC color-color diagram from the IRAC Shallow Survey, we find that 64% of the 24-micron excess red galaxies are likely to have strong PAH emission features in the 8-micron IRAC band. We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope to study the dust properties of a sample of star-forming dwarf galaxies. The differences in the mid-infrared spectral energy distributions for these galaxies which, in general, are low metallicity systems, indicate differences in the physical properties, heating, and/or distribution of the dust. Specifically, these galaxies have more hot dust and/or very small grains and less PAH emission than either spiral or higher luminosity starburst galaxies. As has been shown in previous studies, there is a gradual decrease in PAH emission as a function of metallicity. Because much of the energy from star formation in galaxies is re-radiated in the mid-infrared, star-formation rate indicators based on both line and continuum measurements in this wavelength range are coming into more common usage. We study the infrared (IR) properties of high-redshift galaxies using deep Spitzer 24, 70, and 160 micron data. Our primary interest is to improve the constraints on the total IR luminosities, L(IR), of these galaxies. We combine the Spitzer data in the southern Extended Chandra Deep Field with a K-band-selected galaxy sample and photometric redshifts from the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile. We used a stacking analysis to measure the average 70 and 160 micron flux densities of 1.5 < z < 2.5 galaxies as a function of 24 micron flux density, X-ray activity, and rest-frame near-IR color. Galaxies with 1.5 < z < 2.5 and S(24)=53-250 micro-Jy have L(IR) derived from their average 24-160 micron flux densities within factors of 2-3 of those derived from the 24 micron flux densities only. However, L(IR) derived from the average 24-160 micron flux densities for galaxies with S(24) > 250 micro-Jy and 1.5 < z < 2.5 are lower than those derived using only the 24 micron flux density by factors of 2-10. Galaxies with S(24) > 250 micro-Jy have S(70)/S(24) flux ratios comparable to sources with X-ray detections or red rest-frame IR colors, suggesting that warm dust possibly heated by AGN may contribute to the high 24 micron emission. Based on the average 24-160 micron flux densities, nearly all 24 micron-selected galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 have L(IR) < 6 x 10^12 solar luminosities, which if attributed to star formation corresponds to < 1000 solar masses per year. This suggests that high redshift galaxies may have similar star formation efficiencies and feedback processes as local analogs. Objects with L(IR) > 6 x 10^12 solar luminosities are quite rare, with a surface density ~ 30 +/- 10 per sq. deg, corresponding to ~ 2 +/- 1 x 10^-6 Mpc^-3 over 1.5 < z < 2.5., Accepted for Publication in ApJ. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field source JD2 presented in Mobasher et al. (2005) is an unusual galaxy that is very faint at all wavelengths shortward of 1.1 micron. Photometric redshift fits to data at 0.4 to 8 microns yield a significant probability that it is an extremely massive galaxy at z~6.5. In this paper we present new photometry at 16 microns and 22 micron from Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) peak-up imaging of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields. We find that the spectral energy distribution shows a factor of ~4 rise in flux density between the 16 micron and 22 micron bandpass which is most likely due to the entrance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features into the 22 micron and 24 micron passbands. The flux ratio between these bandpasses can be best fit by a z~1.7 luminous infrared galaxy with a bolometric luminosity of (2-6)\times10^{11} L_sun corresponding to a star-formation rate of 80 M_sun/yr. The predicted flux density values at other longer wavelengths are below the detection limits of current instrumentation but such sources could potentially be detected in lensed submillimeter surveys. Re-evaluation of the optical/near-infrared photometry continues to favor z>6 photometric redshift solutions, but we argue that the consistency of the multiwavelength parameters of this galaxy with other dusty starbursts favor the z~2 mid-infrared photometric redshift. The data presented here provide evidence that optically undetected near-infrared sources which are detected at 24 microns are most likely dusty, starburst galaxies at a redshift of z~2 with stellar masses >10^{10} M_sun.

Using data from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey and HST/ACS imaging in the Extended Groth Strip, we select nearly 100 interacting galaxy systems including kinematic close pairs and morphologically identified merging galaxies. Spitzer MIPS 24 micron fluxes of these systems reflect the current dusty star formation activity, and at a fixed stellar mass (M_{*}) the median infrared luminosity (L_{IR}) among merging galaxies and close pairs of blue galaxies is twice (1.9 +/- 0.4) that of control pairs drawn from isolated blue galaxies. Enhancement declines with galaxy separation, being strongest in close pairs and mergers and weaker in wide pairs compared to the control sample. At z ~ 0.9, 7.1% +/- 4.3% of massive interacting galaxies (M_{*} > 2*10^{10} M_{solar}) are found to be ULIRGs, compared to 2.6% +/- 0.7% in the control sample. The large spread of IR luminosity to stellar mass ratio among interacting galaxies suggests that this enhancement may depend on the merger stage as well as other as yet unidentified factors (e.g., galaxy structure, mass ratio, orbital characteristics, presence of AGN or bar). New surveys with the Spitzer space telescope identify distant star-forming and active galaxies by their strong emission at far-infrared wavelengths, which provides strong constraints on these galaxies' bolometric energy. Using early results from Spitzer surveys at 24 micron, we argue that the faint sources correspond to the existence of a population of infrared-luminous galaxies at z > 1 that are not expected from predictions based on previous observations from ISO and IRAS. Combining Spitzer images with deep ground-based optical and Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we discuss the properties of galaxies selected at 24 micron in the region of the Chandra Deep Field South, including redshift and morphological distributions. Galaxies with z < 1 constitute roughly half of the faint 24 micron sources. Infrared-luminous galaxies at these redshifts span a wide variety of normal to strongly interacting/merging morphologies, which suggests that a range of mechanisms produce infrared activity. Large-area, joint surveys between Spitzer and HST are needed to understand the complex relation between galaxy morphology, structure, environment and activity level, and how this evolves with cosmic time. We briefly discuss strategies for constructing surveys to maximize the legacy of these missions.

Aims. We quantify the contributions of 24um galaxies to the Far-Infrared (FIR) Background at 70 and 160um. We provide new estimates of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB), and compare it with the Cosmic Optical Background (COB). Methods. Using Spitzer data at 24, 70 and 160um in three deep fields, we stacked more than 19000 MIPS 24um sources with S24>60uJy at 70 and 160um, and measured the resulting FIR flux densities. Results. This method allows a gain up to one order of magnitude in depth in the FIR. We find that the Mid-Infrared (MIR) 24um selected sources contribute to more than 70% of the CIB at 70 and 160um. This is the first direct measurement of the contribution of MIR-selected galaxies to the FIR CIB. Galaxies contributing the most to the total CIB are thus z~1 luminous infrared galaxies, which have intermediate stellar masses. We estimate that the CIB will be resolved at 0.9 mJy at 70 and 3 mJy at 160um. By combining the extrapolation of the 24um source counts below 60uJy, with 160/24 and 70/24 colors as measured with the stacking analysis, we obtain lower limits of 7.1+/-1.0 and 13.4+/-1.7 nW/m2/sr for the CIB at 70 and 160um, respectively. Conclusions. The MIPS surveys have resolved more than three quarters of the MIR and FIR CIB. By carefully integrating the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) SED, we also find that the CIB has the same brightness as the COB, around 24 nW/m2/sr. The EBL is produced on average by 115 infrared photons for one visible photon. Finally, the galaxy formation and evolution processes emitted a brightness equivalent to 5% of the primordial electromagnetic background (CMB)., A&A, in press. 14 pages, 14 figures.
