Forced population movements are a defining feature of almost any humanitarian crisis, shaping the design, targeting, and delivery of emergency responses.This book investigates how the evolving situation of different forced migrants is accounted for and addressed in humanitarian action in order to improve their access to support and assistance. The Politics of Replacement explores current demographic conspiracy theories and their entanglement with different forms of racism and exclusionary politics such as sexism.The book focuses on population replacement conspiracy theories, that is, those imaginaries and discourses centered on the idea that the national population is under threat of being overtaken or even wiped out by those considered as “alien” to the nation and that this is the result of concerted efforts by “elites”. To account for their rise and spread, this edited volume brings together research on various dimensions of population replacement conspiracy theories: different theoretical and methodological approaches, different social scientific and humanities (inter)disciplinary backgrounds, different geographical case studies (across Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and Oceania), different time periods (medieval archives, colonial archives, Nazi archives, postcolonial migrations, post-9/11), and different forms of racialization and racisms (Islamophobia, antisemitism, racism against migrants and refugees). This book investigates the integration of Syrian refugees in the United States, and it identifies the challenges that hinder their successful integration. Across the world, the number of people forcibly displaced from their homes has more than doubled during the last decade. Although international law does not allow states to turn back refugees, some countries close their borders to refugees, some open their borders and grant extensive protection, while others admit some groups of refugees while excluding others. How can we make sense of these different responses to admitting refugees? In this book, Daniel Drewski and Jürgen Gerhards show that governments'refugee policy, as well as the stance adopted by opposition parties on the issue, is heavily dependent on how they frame their country's collective identity on the one hand and the identity and characteristics of the refugees on the other. By defining the'we'and the'others', politicians draw on collectively shared cultural repertoires, which vary by country and by political constituency within a country. The book is based on a discourse analysis of parliamentary debates. It explores the specific framing of nations'identities and the corresponding perceptions of otherness by focusing on six countries that have been confronted with large numbers of refugees: Germany, Poland, and Turkey, all responding to the exodus of Syrian and Middle Eastern refugees; Chile's reaction to the Venezuelan displacement; Singapore and its stance towards Rohingya refugees; and Uganda's response to the displacement from South Sudan. The study explores not only differences between governments of different countries but also the conflicting views of different political parties within the same country. This book sets out to provide a clearer picture of the movement and directionality of polyethnic rights – or immigrant-centered multiculturalism, as it is more commonly known – following recent shifts to the left in government (i.e., victories of left-parties, inclusion of left-parties in coalition governments, increase in left parties'presence in parliament, defeat of far-right parties and right-wing populists). In so doing, it aims to understand the near and longer-term prospects of multicultural policy, multicultural discourse, demographic multiculturalism, and laws and regulations related to the immigration process in the 21st century and in an increasingly complex ideological environment. The book comprises case studies of multicultural developments in eight countries – Sweden, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom – all of which have recently (2014-2024) experienced a shift to the left in national level politics, albeit in different ways and to varying degrees. In addition to understanding what has happened to multicultural policy and discourse in recent years, the book also sets out to identify the conditions under which multiculturalism is more or less likely to mend after a shift to the left in government. The book's overall aim is to see whether there is a future for multiculturalism in an increasingly ideologically complex environment or whether the victories of the political right, the rise of populism, the resurgence of anti-immigrant racism, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the changing nature of minority mobilization have irreversibly altered the course of multicultural affairs.

Skill-selective immigration policies, through which states favor the admission of highly-skilled migrants over low-skilled migrants, are a familiar component of the immigration landscape. Wealthy Western states, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have explicitly declared their desire to attract the'best and the brightest'. On the other hand, attitudes towards low-skilled migrants could not be more different. They have consistently been portrayed as dangerous and undesirable, a drain on social welfare, and economically threatening to citizens. Immigration and Social Equality argues that we ought to re-think this stance. Beginning from the widely-shared principle of equal respect for all persons, it proposes that equal respect requires the recognition of each person's pro tanto right to social equality, regardless of their citizenship status. Even if states have the right to exclude non-citizens, they cannot do so in a way that is demeaning or subordinating to excluded persons. The right to social equality gives us a richer picture of why certain instances of immigrant selection, such as the US's recent ban on citizens from Muslim-majority countries, are unjust. However, it also has troubling implications for skill-selective immigration policies, as they are currently practiced: the book reveals that they ought to be regarded as a form of wrongful discrimination. Drawing on the framework of social equality, Désirée Lim goes on to consider the problem of colonial injustice and how it may be reproduced by skill-selective immigration policies, as well as migratorial disobedience.

How do migration and integration change when ‘crisis becomes normalcy'? Beachtet wird dabei nicht, dass die Anzahl der Migrantinnen und Migranten aus Afrika lediglich einen nur kleinen Teil der Zuwanderung in die EU und der weltweiten Migration ausmachen. Meist wird die Migration aus Afrika mit der Flucht- oder Armutsmigration verbunden obwohl es noch weitere Gründe gibt, die nicht nur sehr komplex sind, sondern auch unterschiedlich und diese meist bei der Flucht- oder Migrationsentscheidung zusammenwirken. Die EU versucht mit verschiedenen politischen Instrumenten, vor allem der irregulären Migration, entgegenzuwirken, da sie politisch und sozial nicht gerne gesehen wird. Dieses Buch setzt sich mit der Analyse der Gründe für die Flucht und Migration von Afrika in die EU auseinander. Um in die Tiefe der Thematik einzusteigen, ist es wichtig, ein Verständnis vom Sachverhalt zu bekommen. Dabei sollen die unterschiedlichen Beweggründe beschrieben werden, welche die Menschen von Afrika dazu veranlasst, in die EU zu fliehen bzw. zu migrieren. Nur wenn man sich mit den Gründen auseinandersetzt, ist eine gezielte Regulierung möglich. Die Europäische Union hat außer der EU-Asyl- und Migrationspolitik diverse Abkommen mit afrikanischen Ländern abgeschlossen.
