- Abstract
Runner Up - Leadership Book of The Year (The Leadership Awards 2024) The research on mentoring is clear. Those who are mentored, out-earn and outperform those who are not. They make higher salaries, get promoted more often, have greater job and career satisfaction and lower rates of burnout. For organisations that invest in mentoring their employees, they benefit from higher productivity and greater loyalty. Mentoring works as a great retention tool. But despite all this, only 76% of people understand the undisputed benefits of having a mentor, and only 37% of people actually have one. But how do you do mentoring well, both as a mentor and in building a mentoring programme in your organisation? The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring gives you the tools you need to understand what mentoring is and its benefits, learn how to mentor effectively, and be mentored. By breaking down each stage of the process, this book will enable senior and aspiring executives to both give the support they need to act as a mentor to future talent in their organisation and seek mentoring for themselves that they had thought no longer relevant but which will stretch them and fast track their further career progress. While it's likely that they will have been mentored at some point in their career, in our experience many senior executives turn at some point from being mentored to mentoring others.

- Abstract
Coaching is a necessary skill for managers. It is important as a fundamental part of an organization's talent efforts—including talent acquisition, development and retention strategies. For a coaching program to succeed in an organization, it should be recognized as a useful approach throughout the organization and become part of the fabric of the corporate culture. Performance Coaching for Managers provides an important tool for organizations to use to train their managers on coaching. This book differs significantly from other books in the coaching market. Many books on coaching cast coaches as facilitators who question their clients (the coachees), helping them to articulate their own problems, formulate their own solutions, develop their own action plans to solve problems, and measure the success of efforts to implement those plans. That is called a nondirective approach. But this book adopts a directive approach by casting the coach as a manager who diagnoses the problems with worker job performance and offers specific advice on how to solve those problems. While there is nothing wrong with a nondirective approach, it does not always work well in job performance reviews in which the manager must inform the worker about gaps between what is needed (the desired) and what is performed (the actual). The significant difference between what is currently available in the market and what is offered in this book is the authors'collective experience of over 70 combined years of hands-on research and delivery experiences in the Human Resources Development field. According to the Harvard Business Review (2015), workers generally expect their immediate supervisors to give them honest feedback on how well they do their jobs—and specific advice on what to do if they are not performing in alignment with organizational expectations. When workers do not receive advice—but instead are questioned about their own views—they regard their managers as either incompetent or disingenuous. Effective managers should be able to offer direction to their employees. After all, managers are responsible for ensuring that their organizational units deliver the results needed by the organization. If they fail to do that, the organization does not achieve its strategic goals. This book gives managers direction in how to offer directive coaching to their workers.

Taking its source of inspiration from a wide range of sources such as philosophy and the practical joys of nature this book will seek to fill some gaps in the ways in which practice unfolds. Much of work undertaken has been against the practical backdrop of pitching theory against practice. In addition, more recently, this is set against trends involved in Higher Education whereby mature adults are undergoing over 12 months of training to achieve the nationally recognised ILM coaching qualifications at Levels 5 and 7. This represents contact with a diverse set of cohorts of learners of over 300 students in the past 5 years for more than 100 contact hours per cohort. Mixing theory with practice is one of the strong points of these vocational qualifications ‘producing'highly motivated practitioners forging their understanding in the fulcrum of reflective practice and individual reflexivity. Against this backdrop ideas, concepts and new ways of thinking have produced groups of coaches who are adept at utilising core and fundamental aspects of human nature to become successful coaches. Huge shifts in understanding have been made through engaging in creative activities; to engaging in art, metaphors, nature, walking and unusual methods of engagement with a fellow human in a coaching setting. As a result, this book sheds light upon the use of creative techniques and begins to extend the possibilities for coaches and their clients. Pitched as a way in which peers and equals can work together to learn and develop alternative coaching approaches this book forms the platform for strong learning and an increased diversity of practice and understanding.

- Abstract
All organizations are political environments. Politics is present in all the major processes, including resource allocation, succession planning and equal opportunities. Yet being political is often regarded as a negative trait, associated with lack of authenticity, unethical behaviour and sociopathy. For employees, managing politics is a core skill. For coaches and mentors, there is the constant dilemma of how to help a client thrive in a political environment while retaining their authenticity. A critical distinction is between being politically aware or astute and being political or “playing politics”.This book aims to set out practical ways in which coaches and mentors can both maintain their own integrity and support their clients in doing the same, in politicised environments. It will draw on the experiences of coaches and mentors, leaders and managers in organisations around the world, and coach supervisors.

- Abstract
This book reports on an empirically-based, theoretical model of coaching culture development over four stages. This is the first model of coaching culture development that goes beyond the listing of stages and strategies in the academic literature based on pracademic experience. It is a dynamic, process model which informs practitioners of how to develop a coaching culture in organisations. Each stage is explained in terms of how coaching is conceptualised by organisational leaders, the motivation for introducing coaching into the organisation, the organisational members who are the recipients of coaching, and those who are involved in delivering the coaching at each stage. The model contributes to the academic literature and the growing calls for coaching to become a discipline in its own right.

- Abstract
This book responds to the growing need for understanding how we can foster wellness, raise engagement, and strengthen connections in professional contexts as human interactions become increasingly remote.Through research and case studies, the authors outline a paradox: the digital technology we use to connect with others can leave us feeling less connected. To understand what is missing from remote interactions, the authors examine the use of space, sensory cues, group dynamics, and challenges people encounter when the innate need for human connection is unmet. They provide practical advice to improve remote experiences, including ways to manage stress, avoid cognitive overload, and prevent burnout. Ultimately, the book highlights what is possible when we focus not only on the quantity and efficiency of our interactions, but also on the quality and depth of our human connections. The contemporary relevance of this topic makes the book essential for leaders, coaches, consultants, and other professionals working remotely, as well as students and interested individuals seeking to improve their personal and professional remote experiences.

“You can't help but be excited about what the future will look like, if all businesses embrace Patrice's passion for reverse mentorship; her passion for a world in which all businesses are 100 percent diverse, inclusive, and equitable shines through on every page.”--From the Foreword by Holly Branson, Chief Purpose and Vision Officer of Virgin Group Most organizations today strive for goals such as employee diversity, inclusive leadership, and younger and fresher ideas. But how do we get there? In her trailblazing Reverse Mentorship program, world-renowned executive coach and personal development advocate Patrice Gordon creates a safe and engaging culture by having senior leaders learn from junior employees. While typical mentoring programs arrange for a senior manager to teach the more junior employee, Reverse Mentoring is the opposite: it's all about a leader leaning into their vulnerability, forming a relationship with an underrepresented employee, and amplifying the voice of marginalized people within the company.Reverse Mentoring offers various tips to make reverse mentorship work. Gordon explores the power of uncomfortable and awkward moments becoming key points of transformation when people have to pause, reflect and assess their past behaviors and current assumptions which are at odds with the topic at hand. She ultimately reveals how bringing more humanity into our organizations allows us to see one another and ourselves in a radically new light.

Growth is learning put into action—action that betters the world as we better ourselves and our small niches, both personal and professional, within it. Growth occurs when learning is internalized—when we try something new and invest the effort to move it from being something we do to something we are.
